Washington Blasts Putin For Russian Strikes On "CIA-Backed Rebels" In Syria

On Wednesday, we said that while even we were surprised at how quickly the Western propaganda machine was put into motion in the wake of Russia’s first airstrikes in Syria, it wasn’t at all surprising to see reports surface that Moscow was targeting US-backed forces rather than ISIS. Here’s how we put it: 

Followiing Russian lawmakers’ move to officially sanction airstrikes in Syria, Moscow wasted no time in launching its first round of air raids. In turn, the West wasted no time in contending that Russia is targeting areas that aren’t known to be strategically significant for ISIS. Here’s a look at two headlines which do a nice job of summarizing all of the rhetoric which you’re about to hear emanating ceaselessly from every corner of the Western world in the coming days and weeks:

  • U.S. IS CONCERNED RUSSIA'S INTENT IS PROTECTING ASSAD: KERRY
  • U.S. HAS 'GRAVE CONCERNS' IF RUSSIA STRIKES OUTSIDE ISIL AREAS

And here’s WSJ with a sneak peek at the new narrative which Washington will be working hard to refine:

 

Russian President Vladimir Putin inserted his country directly into Syria’s war Wednesday, as Russian forces launched their first airstrikes against what Moscow said were Islamic State targets in the Middle Eastern nation.

 

But Western leaders raised doubts about whether Russia really intended to take the fight to Islamic State, or merely broaden the Syrian regime’s offensive against a wide range of other opponents.

 

But with the exception of the area east of the town of Salamiyah in Hama province, none of the areas listed by the Syrian regime have a known presence of Islamic State fighters. They are largely dominated by relatively moderate rebel factions and Islamist groups like Ahrar al-Sham and the al Qaeda affiliate the Nusra Front.

And then Reuters jumped on the bandwagon, saying that based on a Skype interview with rebel commanders, it was clear that Russian warplanes were deliberately targeting anti-regime forces other than ISIS. 

The point here isn't to suggest that Moscow isn't targeting other rebel factions operating in Syria, it's to say that i) Russia has never made a secret of its intentions to bolster Assad by routing any extremist elements aiming to overthrow the government in Damascus, and ii) the idea that the US and its regional allies are a good judge of who is a "moderate" rebel and who is or will end up being a terrorist is laughable. Indeed, thanks to the brutality of ISIS, the "moderate" label is now being openly applied to al-Qaeda (see the WSJ article cited above) which would appear to suggest that Washington would prefer a Syria run by Ayman al-Zawahiri rather than Assad.

Well on Thursday the media propaganda machine kicked into high gear as WSJ is now effectively chiding Russia for hitting areas controlled in part by "CIA-backed rebels". Here's more:

Russia launched airstrikes in Syria on Wednesday, catching U.S. and Western officials off guard and drawing new condemnation as evidence suggested Moscow wasn’t targeting extremist group Islamic State, but rather other opponents of Bashar al-Assad’s regime.

 

One of the airstrikes hit an area primarily held by rebels backed by the Central Intelligence Agency and allied spy services, U.S. officials said, catapulting the Syrian crisis to a new level of danger and uncertainty. Moscow’s entry means the world’s most powerful militaries—including the U.S., Britain and France—now are flying uncoordinated combat missions, heightening the risk of conflict in the skies over Syria.

 

U.S. Defense Secretary Ash Carter said Russia’s approach to the Syrian war—defending Mr. Assad while ostensibly targeting extremists—was tantamount to “pouring gasoline on the fire.”

 

“I have been dealing with them for a long time. And this is not the kind of behavior that we should expect professionally from the Russian military,” Mr. Carter said at a Pentagon news conference.

 

The U.S. and its allies were angry at the Russians on many scores: that they are supporting Mr. Assad; that they aren’t coordinating their actions with the existing, U.S.-led anti-Islamic State coalition; that they provided terse notice only an hour before their operations; that they demanded the U.S. coalition stay out of Syrian airspace; and that they struck in areas where anti-Assad rebels—not Islamic State—operate.

 


 

It does appear that they were in areas where there probably were not ISIL forces, and that is precisely one of the problems with this whole approach,” said Mr. Carter, the U.S. defense chief.

It would be a "problem with the approach" if your aim wasn't to restore the Assad regime, but because that is Russia's explicit (not secret, and not "mysterious", as Washington insists) aim, there's no "problem" with it at all.

Back to WSJ for the inevtiable comparisons with Crimea and Ukraine:

The U.S. spy agency has been arming and training rebels in Syria since 2013 to fight the Assad regime. Rebels who receive support under a separate arming and training program run by the Pentagon weren’t in areas targeted by Russia in its initial strikes, the officials said.

 

The combination of unpredictable, unilateral action that flouted Western exhortations posed an unmistakable resemblance to Ukraine, where Mr. Putin moved to annex the Crimea region and has defied international demands to halt its support for separatists.

 

Mr. Putin’s decision-making in Syria mirrors the way he has approached Ukraine, said Andrew Weiss, vice president for studies at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.

 

“He deliberately tries to do things to throw opponents off balance and he’s always trying to get some sort of element of surprise and tactical advantage over people, that’s sort of what keeps him going is this constant springing surprises and flipping events in his favor,” said Mr. Weiss, who worked on Russia policy in the George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton administrations.

Yes, an "unmistakable resemblance to Ukraine," much like Washington's approach to ousting Assad by training and arming extremist elements marks an "unmistakable resemblance" to countless Mid-East foreign policy blunders where the results of Washington's meddling end up being far worse than the "problem" the US was trying to "fix."

And on that note, we'll simply close by saying that while we have no doubt that Russian airstrikes will contribute to the human suffering in Syria (they're dropping bombs on populated areas after all), anyone covering this story should be careful to note that civilians (women and children included) have been dying by the hundreds of thousands in Syria for years while the US continued to support the proxy armies that contributed to the instability. So keep that in mind when you read things like the following passage, again from WSJ:

Video filmed by people affiliated with local rebel groups and posted on YouTube showed the aftermath of the airstrikes in Talbiseh. In one video, rebels and citizens are seen rushing down a street as thick black smoke and fire engulfed heavily damaged buildings. Then they are shown attempting to rescue those trapped under the rubble. A dazed man covered in blood was lifted up from the ground and taken outside.

 

“Is there anyone here?” a voice is heard shouting. “I don’t know, I don’t know but lots of people live here!” answers a panicked man.

 

In another video a naked child covered in blood and shrapnel is shown crying on a bed at a local field hospital.

So this morning I'm seeing the "Mighty Wurlitzer" propaganda echo-chamber citing "The Institute for the Study of War," "verifying" that Putin isn't attacking ISIS at all; he's attacking Al-Quaeda in Syria, who oppose ISIS.

There are so many turds in this package it's hard to identify them all.  

First of all, "The Institute for the Study of War" is headed by Kristina Kagan, Bob Kagan and Victoria Nudelman's sister-in-law.  A former aide to Stanley McChrystal, among other cv highlights.  The rest of the staff of this neo-con incubator is the typical-looking band of utterly jaded old farts and easily-led eager-beaver youngsters with glittering academic credentials attesting to their ability to think exactly as authority figures direct them to.

And then, it's bad that Russia is attacking Al-Quaeda now?  Really, this shit is so hard to stay up on.  We hate ISIS, but Al-Quaeda in Syria is jake by us?  WTF?  Yeah, you'd sure hate to have somebody kill the wrong "Terrorists," wouldn't you.

Obviously, the neo-cons (Zio-cons?) are out in full force to prevent anyone from stabilizing anything in the ME.  The dumpster has to burn as long and hot as possible, and the more people who die over the longer period of time, the closer they come to being satisfied.  They won't ever be satisfied, of course.  Their aim is laid out pretty clearly in Zbigniew Brzezinski's "The Grand Chessboard," and then warped through the funhouse mirror of The Wolfowitz Doctrine.  It's total nonsense, naturally.  But it got them great grades in their Ivy League coursework, and they got great jobs right out of school and get invited to fabulous parties, while I dropped out of high school and college and was working full-time and living like a serf before I turned 20, so what the fuck do I know.

People like that make me wish for an EMP.  I'd like to see how they survive without online ordering of takeout food.  Or in a world where violence isn't something to be discussed in a classroom with ample audio-visual support.  A punch in the nose is very different from a great PowerPoint presentation with active links.

The American political lexicon has become so perverted it's entirely drained of meaning.  Used to be, a "Progressive" was a critic of the Democratic Party, from the Left side.  Opposed to overseas military and covert intervention, opposed to the solidification of State power under corporate control, etc.  The Democrats were satisfied with "Liberal," which was a misuse of the term anyway because every politician in America is a Liberal by the dictionary definition.  But then as Frank Luntz and the GOP made "Liberal" a dirty word with "Socialist" connotations, which is a complete contradiction in terms but whatever, then the more alert of the Democrats appropriated the word "Progressive."  So now, a "Progressive" favors overseas military and covert intervention, works to hasten the consolidation of State power under corporate control (Diverting the Treasury through Wall Street, as in ACA, ZIRP, QE; bailing out GM bondholders; etc.).

Obama is what he's always been.  A cautious center-right corporate politician.  A little better on TV than Hillary Clinton, but fundamentally interchangeable.  Neither of them could have won the presidential nomination prior to about 2000, even as Republicans, because they would have been seen at that time as far-right corporatist cranks.

So yes, Obama is listening to the Ivy League Warmongering crew of authoritarian submissives.  He is one.

Well, you have to admit that the new guys they brought in were much more enthusiastic than alQaida and they were terrific at self recruiting.

The problems started when they got a little disappointed at being contract labor and decided to go into business for themselves.

Given the fact that they got plenty of brand new Iraqi equiptment and the funds from a central bank in Mosel, I'd rank them as a highly successful start-up business with a bright future.

Unfortunately, for them, a major player is moving to close off markets in Syria by first removing their smaller competitors and consolidating their marketshare in the region. They seem aggressive and serious about claiming and holding that territory.

This new company may find that Iraq has more unlimited growth potential where the existing competition is slow, disorganised and basically ineffective.

I'd rate them a strong buy even with the potentially diminished sales territory because of the superior 'can do' spirit of the management team.

There used to be a time when if we didnt like someone we invaded the country and killed them, we transitioned from that strategy (which works) to one of playing games... if the U.S. wanted to take down assad it would of been as simple as one well placed tomohawk launched off the back of a destroyer, the syrian govt would of fell over-night.

I would certainly take the stain of letting one off the chain opposed to the stain of being known as a terrorist supplier / funder lol but thats logic speaking and well there isn't a lot of logic running around the white house nowadays.

 

I for one am greatful the world has atleast one sensible leader who is fighting to maintain global peace and stability.... Putin is pretty much holding the world together at this point while the idiots are running around knocking shelves over in the china shop, Putin deserves a Peace Prize, I vote we take Obamas and give it to him, dont even have to change the name Putin would treat it like a trophy "and this is the peace prize I stole from Obama" lol I could see him saying that while swirling a glass of whiskey and holding a cigar laughing.

Im not anti-american on this topic, just pro-common sense, Obama and the U.S. had every opportunity to do the right thing, and we fucked it up.... and its still not too late to do the right thing ... but they wont.

 

Sigh... all that being said, if Obama really still wants to topple the Syrian govt the strategic thing to do would be to use Russias strikes against rebel groups as a precedent for running American air-strikes against the Asad Govt (tit-for-tat) (if you kill our rebels, we kill your puppet govt), with some luck the war can be contained in syria and wont evolve into armed conflict between Russia and the U.S. elsewhere, then when there is nothing left but dust and ash in syria the U.S. & Russia can chop it up east and west berlin style to milk the nations resources.

 

That would be the strategic thing to do if you were not willing to give up colonization efforts.

Another thing, maybe I am alone on this, but let me tell you, I have *just* about had it with the middle east, the jew/islam thing. and I hate how zio-christians suck jew wood so hard like they do. this tri-fecta, jew, islam, zio-christian are the cause of pretty much most of the trouble in the world. the jew with their meglamaniacal long term agenda to take over the world (things are moving along nicely, shalom), then there are the islam dirt bags who feel the need to subdue and conquer the infidels, then there are the zio-christians, that really are an embarraasment, because they have low IQs, and can't even figure out who they are supposed to be following. This entire ME thing is drenched in irony, for starters, and most of this BS is tied to ancient mythology in their so-called 'holy' books, penned at a time when nobody today was around to corroborate first hand their authenticity, and most of those who sat down to write the fiction were not even contemporaneous to the events they wrote about. But if you listen to people 'preach' from these texts, they speak so passionately like it is all so real, and they'll end up killing somebody based thereon.

This is 2015. I can't call myself a christian anymore because of all this, so I created a new thing called Jesusianity, making me a Jesusian. After 37 years of being a christian, when i found out what that means, and finally got around to reading the unseemly post-crucifixion era (~33AD - Present) history on planet earth, focusing on the after-the-fact path of the judahites, its like everything Jesus stood for and against sort of went in one ear and out the other. I cant deny my own experience. One day for no particular reason, I stood in the kitchen of my apartment in 1978 and asked Jesus to prove to me by a sign he was real. Later on that day at ~1:30 AM I got what I was looking for. I was alone, and the experience was pretty intense, in a good sort of way. I am not trying to sell anything here, and I dont care what anybody else believes. My point is, when I connect my first hand experience to what I see was concoted and built up in his name, I suspect much of the bible must be a total sham, because the basis of what passes for christianity today is anti-thetical to the man himself, what he truly represented back in the day, and the  vibration he puts out now.

It is my view, Jesus was the first, at least that I know of, at least the most notorious if there were others, to repudiate and stand up in opposition to the entire basis and premise of everything undergirding the entire levitical tradition and the false god of death doom and destruction inserted into these 'books' of what we call the 'old testatment'. Any reference to a 'good' god in these texts that might be genuine, at least in an allegorical sort of way, is inter-mixed with the allegorical evil god, which in my view boils down to the very ppl who use these texts to get what they want, steam rollering over everybody to get it. The devil is ppl who are evil. Evil ppl with evil designs cause the trouble in this world. Get rid of them, problem solved.

I'll give the jews credit. The ones at the top don't believe in this stuff, they just use it to get what they want - power. I suppose the wild-eyed islam radicals might actually believe in all of this, their great 'prophet' muhammed, but to what end, to run around killing ppl, categorizing them as 'infidels' because they were not accidentally born in a particular part of the world, and do not adhere to one set of superstitous BS compared to another, who (back in the day) have their own absurd global aspirations to subdue the infidel in the name of Allah (see Suleyman the Magnificent circa 1550 AD)? That is just naked aggression. If the earth swallowed them up whole and they were no more, it would be doing the rest of the world a great favor (both groups).

As far as the zionist christians, too stupid to know any better, if the earth swallowed up the two primary evil clans as noted, maybe they would snap out of it. I don't know. All I can say is not only are these ancient traditions total BS, they are lethal. I don't care if they were 'deists' or 'masons' or whatever they were, the founders of the uSa had the right idea. Keep this kind of garbage far, far away from the uSa. They *warned* us about the papacy, and the influence of catholicism. They most particularly *warned* us about the judahite. George Washington *warned* us against entangling alliances. Did we listen? Apparently not.

It is completely insane that these ancient BS mythologies not only drive the bulk of foreign policy, but endanger the entire world. Count me out. I decided to follow in Jesus' footsteps and I formally repudiate the entire thing.

And I just completed the new bible for my new Jesusian religion. It took years of research, meticulous study of ancient langages and cultures, and great attention to accurate transcriptions of holy writ. The atheists won't like it, but you can never please them when it comes to this subject.

"Hard for the western mind to fathom"? Seriously? I ran into people that thought this way when I lived in India. They'd come there seeking some form of enlightenment, and promptly get fleeced. Eastern religions and philosophies don't hold any superior ranking to western religions. I would argue that western philosophy is in fact superior based on what it managed to produce (the Renaissance, industrial revolution, landing on the moon and space exploration). Islam would have never accomplished this, as it is content to stay firmly ensconced in the 12th century. Taoism and Buddhism wouldn't either, Confucianism possibly could, but Confucian thought revolves around conformity, not necessarily innovation (Taoism is innovative, but undisciplined). Hinduism? Forget it. They have the manpower to do anything, but until the caste system is abandoned, they will never be able to transcend their cultural issues. Shinto/Buddhism comes closest, but Japan also has one homogeneous culture as an added (I'd almost argue necessary) benefit. Disciplined and innovative, the Japanese culture stood a good chance at doing whatever it set out to do. It tried, and thankfully, failed in WW2. African religions and philosophies are tribal, and will never amount to much.

Sadly, most of the western world has been corrupted by socialism of one form or another on the political side, and credit expansion on the financial side. My guess is that either a high mortality rate plague, or all encompassing war will clear this bullshit away. Maybe a combination of both.

I've never quite seen how it works to graft the whole Jesus story and philosophy onto the stem of the Abrahamic religions.  To me it's like grafting and apple tree branch onto, I don't know, some guy's shoulder, and expecting it to bear fruit.

The Jesus philosophy is pretty cool.  A mash-up of various philosophies current in the First Century in that part of the world; particularly Stoicism.  You could do a whole lot worse finding a code to live by.  It's better than what we know of as Christianity, fer sher.  Your one-verse Bible works.

I have no interest whatsoever in any of these middle-eastern sky-wizard cults.  They're bizarre and evil, just reading their basic texts.  Ew.  Who would want to be a part of that?  The Jesus part is the only appealing part, and it's the part the true-believers seem to have the most trouble with.  Look how the reactionaries hate Francis, who is the first Pope I've seen in my lifetime who seems to  have any understanding of what Jesus supposedly was talking about.

Whatever.  I was born and raised non-Theist.  That's not the same as Atheist, as most atheists seem to define themselves by what they aren't than by what they are.  I don't feel any need to convince anyone of anything.  I spend my whole life trying to figure stuff out as best I can, and that keeps me plenty busy.  Actually, everybody I've ever met does the exact same thing.  Some people seem to think they get tips from an their all-powerful invisible friend, which strikes me as odd and unlikely.  But hey, as long as they don't try to make me say I'll take their pal's word for it nevermind the evidence of my senses and experiences, I don't mind.

The parts of the philosophy that seem to attract you are the same parts I see active for the good all around, regardless of the particulars.  So good on you.

I watched both 1 hour interviews of Putin by Charlie Rose on PBS. Putin claims that Russia is getting more involved militarily in Syria to prevent a "failed state" haven for terrorists and that is a valid concern and goal. However, based upon who they are now attacking, it's obvious that his first goal is to protect the Assad regime which, while acting to prevent a failed state, also prevents the loss of Russia’s principal partner in the region.

NOTE that I'm not supporting either side in this, I'm just pointing out the primary motive of Russia which, just as with the western forces, is NOT altruistic but simply geopolitical AS ALWAYS.

The western efforts to destroy the Assad regime will probably result in exactly the same sort of mess that deposing dictators in Iraq, Libya, and Egypt has had which makes one wonder if that isn't the unstated goal - keep the Middle East in turmoil knowing that no matter who is in charge, they'll still be willing to sell their oil. After the results in Iraq, Libya, Egypt, and Afghanistan, unless that's the plan, they'd need to be insanely stupid to think that the same mess won't appear in a Syria sans dictator.

The massive control of establishment/msm/corporate media should frighten us.

It's really a lot worse than I imagined. I spent all day yesterday reading very well written bullshit - about everything from who was attacked, to the use of years-old photos accompanying stories about the Russian strike, to absurd claims about the jets and munitions used, to absurd claims about what they hit or did not hit.

The control of media by - to start with Zionists/Jews can not be doubted, but nor can the control of *government* minders.

I know for a fact that CIA works with the NY Times and other large papers. fat dumb fucks.

They haven't fooled everyone - not out in the world, and not in the military. I can promise you that.

But here's the other thing - people my age and younger and maybe a few years older now consume lots of alternative/independent media.

some outlets like VICE and Young Turks seem to have been defanged or compromised - but you still can find plenty out there.

The proportion of people who instantly recognize the propaganda tricks and are otherwise skeptical keeps growing - the desperation of TPTB {state, cia, pentagon brass} was reflected in the sudden lare outburst of stories/comments accusations that anyone dissenting was a "paid Putin troll" {I keep waiting for MSM stories about Israel's hasbara army and wiki editing army....}

We should not feed the trolls

we should simply write "neocon bullshit^" - or nothing at all....

Anyway - my point was to be, the usual suspects are going to come hard and fast against free speech and the internet itself.

The place was a shithole before Putin, and it will be a shithole after Putin.  The Sauds and EU should have cut a deal with Assad for the pipeline.  In the long run, a deal would have been more effective, and a lot cheaper.  Paying mercs, and sending ISIS loads of weapons has too many moving parts to work.  Plus you are left with a PR disaster when the plot is uncovered.

What is this that makes US a great country?

What the world sees from Washington now is: - No morals, No honor, No dignity, but constant violations of the sovereignty and independence of other countries, by bulling them or staging armed rebellions against those who don't want to accept vassal status to US.

A great country is one which treats other countries equally and with respect. 

Does the US fall in that category at present? Definitely not.

The US can be made great again only if the evil foreign policies are abandoned. 

If not, the decline of the US international status will continue its downward course. 

The reserve currency status of the dollar may be lost if Washington does not change course, policies and approach. Much of the US might is due exactly to the Dollar's international acceptance as a payment instrument.

At the UN Obama instead of taking the path of normalization in the Middle east and take part in a united front against terrorism, he chose the opposite one. 

If you want to know what Obama will do in the middle east one may ask himself, what evil can be done in this region, and that actually will be Obama's choice.

It is true, only death and destruction are the results of his policies.

1) Ask for Ash Carter's resignation. No reason. Just demand it. Your the president. You're his boss. Just do it.

2) Coax back Chuck Hagel. You know he was right all along. Grow a backbone and just do it.

3) Coax back Gen. Allen. Let him know that he has free reign, under Gen. Dunford, and newly reappointed SECDEF Hagel, in full cooperation with the Russian Federation and President Assad of Syria, to take out the Frankenstein monster the US., Israel, and Saudi Arabia created. If this means direct action ops in The Woodlands and Irving, Texas, then so be it.
