"They Just Don't Want A Job" - The Fed's Grotesque "Explanation" Why 94.6 Million Are Out Of The Labor Force

Tyler Durden's picture

In a note seeking to "explain" why the US labor participation rate just crashed to a nearly 40 year low earlier today as another half a million Americans decided to exit the labor force bringing the total to 94.6 million people...

... this is what the Atlanta Fed has to say about the most dramatic aberration to the US labor force in history: "Generally speaking, people in the 25–54 age group are the most likely to participate in the labor market. These so-called prime-age individuals are less likely to be making retirement decisions than older individuals and less likely to be enrolled in schooling or training than younger individuals."

This is actually spot on; it is also the only thing the Atlanta Fed does get right in its entire taxpayer-funded "analysis."

However, as the chart below shows, when it comes to participation rates within the age cohort, while the 25-54 group should be stable and/or rising to indicate economic strength while the 55-69 participation rate dropping due to so-called accelerated retirement of baby booners, we see precisely the opposite. The Fed, to its credit, admits this: "participation among the prime-age group declined considerably between 2008 and 2013."

And this is where the wheels fall off the Atlanta Fed narative. Because the regional Fed's very next sentence shows why the world is doomed when you task economists to centrally-plan it:

The decrease in labor force participation among prime-age individuals has been driven mostly by the share who say they currently don't want a job. As of December 2014, prime-age labor force participation was 2.4 percentage points below its prerecession average. Of that, 0.5 percentage point is accounted for by a higher share who indicate they currently want a job; 2 percentage points can be attributed to a higher share who say they currently don't want a job.

And there you have it: there are nearly 100 million working-age Americans who could be in the labor force, but are not "mostly" because they don't want a job.

Nothing about the lack of job demand as mega corporations continue to lay workers off in droves instead of hiring, instead using every last dollar of free cash flow to buyback their own stock to boost executive compensation instead of growing their company and hire more workers.

Nothing about the collapse in small business formation - that driver of 80% of US employment - as firm exit rates are now greater than firm entry rates

Nothing about the inability to get a job in a world in which the rest of
the global is lapping the US in educational and labor skills.

Nothing about the US economy never having left the post-2008 depression where $4.5 trillion in Fed credit was created just to boost the S&P to all time highs and never making it to the actual economy (until the helicopters finally start paradropping of course)

Nothing about millions of aging, 55 and over, Americans refusing to retire or quit their job simply because they have no return on their savings to fall back on thank to the Fed's ZIRP, thus keeping the labor pipeline clogged and preventing younger Americans from getting promoted and achieving better paying jobs.

Nothing about a Millennial generation encumbered with $1 trillion in debt, that is so terrified of its job prospects and having to pay down its debt, it choose instead to keep rolling and piling on to this debt by remaining in college indefinitely

Nothing about the perverted incentive structure of a welfare state that makes it more attractive to collect generous government handouts which end up punishing hard work.

None of that.

You see, it is because Americans "mostly don't want a job."

And these are the pompous academic "intellectuals" who are supposed to micromanage the US economy. But how can they fix the biggest problem facing the US economy when they fail to even accurately diagnose what the problem is?

Which, incidentally, is why the same old Fed tools will be used and abused in hopes of kicking the can down a few more months at at time, be it QE 4, 5, 100, or ever more negative rates, both of which are coming.

How long will this continue? Now that is a very simple question: it will continue until the dollar loses its reserve status, just like the pound before it, and the livre before that, and the guilder before that, and so on.

In case you haven't been following the news, douchey, that TANF program is being severely compromised across the USA, where in many cities they are turning away mothers, claiming their money ran out, then using the leftover money for other stuff (they can do this as it is a state block grant).

Maybe, just maybe, if the deal was something other than "work yourself to death for a pittance, and get poorer every week, no matter how hard you try" then maybe, just maybe people might have a better attitude towards the concept of employment? As of now, for most people, working at the average job is equivalent to slavery, and affords a standard of living little better than what can be accomplished by scrounging. If work actually comes with rewards, maybe people would be more inclined to embrace it?

For me, nothing can replace the warm fuzzy feeling I get when I see some land whale with a passel of brown children pay for her laden to the point of tipping over with junk food shopping cart by swiping her EBT. I shine inside knowing that the money extracted from me at gunpoint is going to help those less fortunate than myself. Not to mention the wonderment I feel knowing that my beloved, honest, caring government is spending trillions to spread democracy and peace to our lost brothers in the MENA. This younger generation is beyond fucked, they grew up under the illusion that education would lead them to a good place, with a good job and a good life, never taking any time to learn any valuable skills. Now they have no jobs, no skills, no homes, and no future, because they mortgaged it for a fancy looking piece of paper that says they successfully jumped through a bunch of hoops, from a pretigious place of "higher learning".

The sooner they let go of these illusions the better they will be. I'm trying hard to dispel these illusions with my kids who have yet to make these kinds of choices, but it's not hard with all the constant conditioning they're subject too.

You have a point.  I had to hire some guys to re-do my roof last fall.  My mistake -- I hired good white American boys.  They demanded eight hours' pay for maybe five hours of work each, and I still had to get up on the roof first thing in the morning and shovel shingles myself, to shame them into getting to work at all.  I was worth any two of those thirty-something, six-foot tall all-American guys,  all 4'11" fat, female, and over 50 of me.  The only reason I didn't get Mexicans was frankly that I don't speak very good Spanish.  Before it happens again, I will.  Or I will figure out a way to do all the work myself, without those nice white boys who laughed and told me that if I wanted somebody to actually WORK, I needed to hire Mexicans.  But I won't try to hire white men again.

Nobody hires illegals anymore, the penalties are to extreme.  The recent relaxed immigration legislation, particularly the DREAM act in Ca, has meant that the bulk of the laborers coming from South of the Border are actually processed and all pass E-Verify; this is nothing like that last episode in the 1980's.  Most the laborers you think are "illegal" are in fact paying taxes on their checks and are paid (and TAXED) directly on the same payroll services US citizens use.  Why do you think the government has been making it so easy to get them in the system?  If you have every hired anybody and put them on a payroll service you would know this.

For people used to making $1.50 a day, $12/hr is fantastic.

When I viewed the molten steel dripping from the World Trade Center I immediately knew that that was impossible without nano-thermite, but I also knew that controlled demolition teams had prepped the buildings because I had Remote Viewed them a few weeks prior to the event. Further, I realized what the Council on Foreign Relations was up to at that juncture because I had Remote Viewed a number of key politicians planning these events. After careful consideration I realized that there were few if any individuals in the world that could put a stop to their antics without reverse engineering what they were doing. What prompted me to take action was the fact that the top echelons of power in the world did not care about the human beings they had so callously destroyed. Their complete lack of empathy, and sociopathy/psychopathy, struck me as being extremely calculated and cold hearted. At that point I realized that there was likely only one individual in the entire world that could fix their collective wagons before they murdered more innocent human beings. It is unfortunate that I have had to subject myself to this kind of debased level of inhumanity, but someone had to do it, and I am not one to sit around and wait for others to rise up to victimizers, bullies, and organized sociopaths.

I am a highly empathic individual, and I deeply care for human beings unlike real psychopaths/sociopaths. I am formally educated in terms of psychopathology/Personality Theory, et cetera, and I know who I am dealing with when we view the CFR/MIC/Israel lobby bureaucrats.

Sometimes the best way to fight fire is with fire. The same applies with psychopaths/sociopaths. cheers & thanks for the note of understanding, apocalypticbrother.

Just like the current position of the US Admin in Syrac, where they want to be enemies of Isis, all the while they are "friends" of Al Qaeda elements and its paymasters, the current Oligarchy is caught between a rock and a hard place on more fronts than the fake PROXY war in Syrac :

Why ? Because its a repeat hubristic mindset, like a serial killer's bloody trail, living in an ivory tower where no feed back filters in. Its called paranoia.

TO understand that we have to remember the current capitalist mantra, straight out of Friedmanite doctrine that inspired Reaganomics, which decreed; as of 1981 : that the ONLY purpose of a Corporation was to MAXIMISE the shareholder's value and NOTHING else.

As we went down this road, hurtling like a Olympic bobsleigh without any brakes, we forgot about the working man, the small entrepreneur, the middle class and the common working man in the nation state of Empire. Those whom "we the happy few" are supposed to represent, the salt, the bedrock of our nation state.

The financial elites were only interested in M&A financially leveraged deals to cut and paste Corporations in order to MAXIMISE shareholder value, even if it meant losing the business model of R&D, social harmony and people's motivation, that assured the FUTURE. The short term financial gain nullified all other considerations.

We were bound to the DJIA stock index like a junkie is to white powder delivery on a daily basis. Reaganomics had made Capitalism a financialzed CASINO !

So to now proclaim  in a forever reinvented new sleight of hand, signature of an Oligarchy elite that has nothing but avarice and deniability to feed its delusional hubris--after 30 years down the road to perdition all for this false mantra-- and inspite of the fact that the Lehman's demise has blown sky high the tinsel curtain of this neo-liberal hype of dimensions never seen in the annals of Man-- we now blame precisely  those whose EyES the Oligarchs have torn out and whom they now scorn for being BLIND, for not contributing to allay the lack of growth we perceive in the economy.

Machivellian reasoning that will come back to bite them.

Just like the victims of Pax Americana's support of Wahhabism and its lethal legacy all imposed like a regional plague for Oil, the same Oligarchy now supports the "shareholder maximisation" mantra like they are doing God's work at home, irrespective of consequences.

When the empire of "exceptionalism", on which the sun is never supposed to set finds itself in the twilight zone...we reap what our Oligarchical lords have sown all over the globe.

How about the fact that so many "jobs" these days are part time, minimum wage jobs that expect you to be "on call", making it impossible to even attempt to make a living wage with two part time jobs? Unless you want to work two shifts, and somehow try to grab 8 hours of sleep.  Even then, working your ass off at minimum wage, you most likely won't be making a living wage, or have anything leftover after you pay the rent, loans, car payments, food, medical expenses, etc.

To work is to submit to governments taking well over 50% of your efforts. Why submit to that? And of course the more these parasites drive people from the workforce, the faster their dive into the unaccounted economy will become.

When I started my career 50+ years ago, 1/4 of my efforts went to government and about 1/4 the people were dependent on government. At the end of my career, both those ratios were well over 1/2 and increasing exponentially.

The solution is to force governments everywhere to be smaller ... a lot smaller ... and quickly. Of course that won't happen with over 1/2 in favor of bigger government. Thus, the parasites "will" kill their host ... and themselves.

What did they say in Vietnam? We had to destroy the village to save it. Well, we have to destroy governments everywhere to save them.

The elite is ridiculous whatever the country. Here in France, one moment they explain the high rate of unemployment by several bullshits:

- young people don't know how to write a CV

- when they are interviewed, they went there with reversed hat like the hip/hop style

- they speak a bad language like in they are in the road...

They have stopped to say those shitty reasons because even a five years old kid cannot trust that.

Actually, the current labour participation rate among 25-54's is comparable to the mid 1980's.

For 55's and over it's comparable to the 1960's.

The real split isn't by age group. You know whose rate has been dropping like a rock since the Second World War, with no end in sight?

That's right---men, black and white both, who've been systematically driven out by their less rebellious and more conscientious sisters from the jobs our masters couldn't outsource or automate. All 2008 did was accelerate white men's departure from the (formal) labour force.

People have only started paying attention because the system post-2008 has begun to run out of cushy non-jobs even for wannabe Carly Fiorinas, Hillary Clintons and Janet Yellens. Labor force participation rates for white women over 20 peaked only in 2009. (It had peaked for their black sisters in 1999.)

Even our masters (and their immediate underlings in the ten per cent) have begun to wonder if their princesses will ever grow up and marry into a "good" family, or find jobs somewhere where they can find men from "good" families. Gap year is one thing. A gap decade isn't a joke even for them.

Rent for a decent place is averaging over $1000 a month almost everywhere in America. In the big cities it is higher.

I am living in what I consider a shit town in Massachusetts and a 400sq ft studio apartment in a 150 year old building is renting for $700 a month.

Most of the job prospects pay $20 a hour and below. After taxes you take home around $2200 a month on a $20 an hour full time job. If your shit apartment costs $1000 a month you are using almost half your income on housing. Utilities have been skyrocketing to an average over $200 a month. Most likely you'll have at least $300 a month in student loan payments. Food, if you eat light, is going to be $500 a month minimum.

You are already at $2000 a month without paying for a car, gasoline, cell phone, entertainment, or anything else. THIS IS IF YOU ARE SINGLE. Imagine if you were trying to have a family.

So you're living paycheck to paycheck in a shit apartment with no car, no social life, and nothing to do other than your most probable shit job.

Who would actually want to work with that kind of life prospect?

In So. Cal., Orange County area, moving in to a new one bedroom apt. will cost you an average of between $1,200-$1,600, depending on where you try to live. That is the average, mind you.

Gasoline, right now is about $3.00/gallon for regular.

Car insurance is all over the place for full coverage depending on the company and where you live, but it is high.

Average fast food meal for an average person is about $6-$8. Sit down meal at an average ma and pa restaurant, without booze is about $12-$16.

Prime time movie theaters charge $12.00-$15.00 on average to watch a show.

Don't even get me started on what a day at Dismal Land will cost for a family of four.

Competition in the restaurant industry is fierce. I watch them open and close all over the place.

Lots of high income folks live in the O.C. Just look at all the boats in Laguna, Newport, Huntington, Long beach, etc. Those folks have done something right for a long time, whether you or I like it or not.

So what's a mother to do?

Be smart and work long and hard. Save what you can. PMs are a must for future survival. Cold steel and copper coated lead, also a must for future planning. A few good like minded friends can be invaluable when the going gets a little tougher. Stay as private and off the radar as you can. And for me, trust that the Lord has prepared you "for such a time as this."

Illegals...are the problem in many areas.

BTW, the image of Paulson makes me barf...

Who ever thinks that the economic problems the USA and the world facing now is all about the goverment giving free stuff to the people is total stupid. The main reason for this economic mess is never ending greed of the elite and the globalists. Without the goverment welfare programs there would be already some serious BLOOD on the streets. god sake people dont try to act like we are living in a somekind of strong economic times.

The first episode of BestEvidence goes to the root of what’s happening to American jobs.

It examines the U.S. labor force participation rate going back to the first days of the Eisenhouser Administration (January 1953). After the rate stabilizes in the early 1960s, three distinct periods of time are clear by inspection.

For each period, BestEvidence breaks down the rate into its constituent parts—the labor force itself and the working age population from which it’s drawn (see below)—and looks at their respective changes.

The third and current period is a bloodbath.

BestEvidence discovers and presents here a stunning inverse correlation between the labor force participation rate and the U.S. monetary base starting in October 2008—exactly when the labor force participation rate entered a swan dive and the monetary base exploded.

This is no accident.

The episode concludes with a few words on the direction of BestEvidence, as well as the show's format.
