U.S. Politicians Are Asked About Saudi Atrocities... Here's What Happened Next

Tyler Durden's picture

Submitted by Mike Krieger via Liberty Blitzkrieg blog,

Former Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney smiled and repeatedly said, “Nice to see you,” when I asked if he had any concerns about the Saudi Arabian-led bombing campaign in Yemen.

– From the Intercept article: U.S. Senators Hem and Haw on Saudi Arabia’s Human Rights Abuses

Just in case you’re still confused as to why the Middle East is a flaming cauldron of death, destruction and chaos, Lee Fang provides you with some insightful observations from the self-proclaimed “leaders of the free world.”

From the Intercept:

Given the news this week that Saudi-led forces bombed a wedding party in Yemen, killing scores of civilians, as well as the decision by the Saudi government to behead and then crucify Ali Mohammed al-Nimr, the teenage son of a government critic, I attempted to talk about the Saudi Arabian human rights record to a number of politicians at the Washington Ideas Forum, an event hosted by The Atlantic and the Aspen Institute to discuss “this year’s most pressing issues and ideas of consequence.”

Most were uninterested in commenting.

Former Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney smiled and repeatedly said, “Nice to see you,” when I asked if he had any concerns about the Saudi Arabian-led bombing campaign in Yemen.

This has to be a joke, right?

Recall, this man was recently the Republican nominee for President. On the bright side, at least he did better than former Prime Minister of Australia, Tony Abbott, when he was asked a difficult question:

Meanwhile, you can always count on Crazy John McCain for the most memorable incoherent ramblings…

Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., spent the most time discussing the issue with me. But his answers were perplexing.

“They may be bombing civilians, which is actually not true,” McCain said, when asked about civilian casualties in Yemen.

Is that even english?

“Civilians aren’t dying?” I asked.

“No, they’re not,” the senator replied. “Oh, I’m sure civilians die in war. Not nearly as many as the Houthis have executed,” McCain continued, referring to the Shiite militia waging an insurgency against the Sunni government in Yemen.

Thanks for clearing things up, Mr. Senator.

Asked about the recent reports of Saudi forces bombing a wedding party in Yemen, McCain said, “I’m sure in wars terrible things happen and the Houthis however are an extremist group backed by the Iranians who are slaughtering Yemenis.”

Sounds good, unfortunately for Mr. McCain, it’s a complete lie.

The U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights has reported that more than 2,300 civilians have been killed in the Yemen conflict, and that both Houthi rebels and the Saudi-led forces share responsibility for the deaths. The UNHCHR spokesperson has told reporters, however, that the Saudi-led bombing campaign has caused most of the deaths.

America, meet your leaders.

Just like they want to blame Assad in Syria for 250,000 cililian deaths, but NOT talking about how many civilian deaths have occured because WE are supporting the other side---and how many  deaths the "other side" has caused.  American Exceptionalism my ass.

How many wedding parties did we bomb in Afghanistan?  IIRC it was quite a few too.

DEMOCIDE:  DEATH BY GOVERNMENT

Total killed in the 20th Century by government:  262,000,000

https://www.hawaii.edu/powerkills/20TH.HTM

The 21st Century will probably be 10 times worse if these sociopaths and psychopaths continue to get their way.

"Just to give perspective on this incredible murder by government, if all these bodies were laid head to toe, with the average height being 5', then they would circle the earth ten times. Also, this democide murdered 6 times more people than died in combat in all the foreign and internal wars of the century. Finally, given popular estimates of the dead in a major nuclear war, this total democide is as though such a war did occur, but with its dead spread over a century."

And to think, of all of the stupid asses that want to give government even MORE power.  They want to take away everyone's guns.  As if governments are suddenly going to become these big fluffy entities that will just take care of everyone nicely.  Our government has killed more innocent people than all of the shooting incidents like the one that happened yesterday combined, and probably in one week, maybe even one day.

It seems that Tony Abbott's behavior was inexplicable only to the untrained viewer. Heads up is that he was attempting a forma communications well known to the elite club of which he is a member. Didn't quite pull it off although "they" understood perfectly well what he was saying. When the "context" subtext is scaled, it says a lot without committing to anything in particular.

Note Benjamin Netanyahu's more expert rendition at the U.N. the other day. Preformed with grace and aplomb to an assembled multitude of the creme de la creme of the diplomats present.

Can you go into more detail? Are you saying that members of this elite club feel they are above criticism and thus hold the media in complete contempt? Or that he actually DOES believe "shit happens" is an appropriate response? Or both? Please elaborate!

Sun, 10/04/2015 - 04:14 | 6627440 formadesika3
formadesika3's picture

Whether he believes "shit happens" Lucinda is immaterial to the immediate issue. It appears he failed an important test but sacrifices are occasionally made in order to maintain appearances. It is important to the narrative of human culpability even among the top tiers.

He appeared about to lose it -- caught in some kind of weird OODA loop -- but whether this was real or feigned we will never know. Incidentally, it one example simultaneously raises the hopes of some while deflating the hopes of others. Either way, it yields mutual demoralization and inaction among these respective segments but in uniquely different ways. To be sure, this is just what is desired whether intentional or inadvertent. The elite are not robots after all, although some would disagree. Crazies, that is.

Organized religion sure started a lot of wars.   But not as many as big government!  Funny, that.

Because Organized Religion is on its way out.  Hopefully the same is true of big government.

Organized religion is sanctioned by government(s).  As such, it will NEVER leave.  It was here before you were born, and it will be here after you, and everyone you know and love, are gone.  Big government is also here to stay.  The only way it can leave is if an opposing army dislodges it.  Since the US has the biggest and meanest military, the government will be staying put for the foreseeable future.  That is reality, no matter how one wishes it to be different.

The King doesn't need to explain anything, is the point of that.

On the other paw, I do get the feeling recently that the ruling elites are running scared. I know I'm usually among the first to point out that the elites hold all the cards and can do as they like, but that is true only as long as BAU is there for them to grope and fondle with their greasy little mits. There is a different context where BAU starts to unravel and if you allow for that possibility then the elites are suddenly left standing on the wrong foot.

It's part of their madness that they could be so suddenly caught like that. It is also part of their madness that they might be the last to notice. And madness to then pretend nothing has changed or is changing. And it would be barking mad to laugh into the face of an angry crowd who is realizing that the elites are floundering.

Well. They are insane for the most part.

Maintaining a lie requires ever increasing energy as the facts on the ground continue to pile up refuting it.  Addicts are quite familiar with this problem.  It's normal that toward the end of the lie, obvious signs of incoherence emerge.  If we're not ready for the collapse, tough titties, because after incoherence, collapse is what comes next.

Abbott does not like idiots in the media, and the Australian media are primarily tedious little idiots playing gotcha games. He just wasn't the type wasn't interested in playing such games, but he would have just been better off going in hard with a headbutt and then apologizing profusely for tripping over a crack in the pavement like that.

Carreer politicians are not real people.

You dont need a labroatory and blood samples to see that.

They are lost morons that keep saying whatever they think will get them out of responsibility and somehow no one wanted to deal with these losers so they ended up running the entire government.

And now we are faced with WWIII because the lunatics are running the asylum.

How can someone who has

-Never had a real job in their life

-Born into money or has family friends who have money

-Went to school strictly to become a politician at one of the "club"schools (Harvard Yale etc)

-Never learned how to drive a car because their limo always picked them up

Ever possibly relate with real human beings?

IMO, it's the intellectually lazy asses that think of government as a convenient means of offloading their burdens of personal responsibility and critical thinking.

Something bad happens, and the reaction is that "the government" should do something about it (meaning, I'm not gonna do shit about it, but complain loud enough until someone else does it for me). In the US that's at least 75% of the population any more.

Also, IMO, they are the #1 biggest threat to liberty, ever, because tyrants can only rule those that allow it. Two centuries ago 5% of the population could create enough trouble to overthrow a government. Today, that same 5% would just be Emanual Goldstein'ed.

"Can you please tell me your opinion about..." "Nice to meet you. Nice to meet you. Hello. Hello. My name is robot XVF237. Nice to meet you. I was not programmed to answer this question. This answer is not in my program." And some of these robots, like e.g. the one called Tony Abbott, appear to be close to an overload, when you ask them something outside of their programming.

But then they obviously have a huge problem, when they try to outsmart someone like Putin, who recites poetry, speaks several languages, never uses teleprompter, has spent thirteen years of a unique question and answer marathon, which has no comparison in the rest of the world.

Remember, if CNN didn't cover it, it didn't happen. The depths of Western Media capture by Government is all but total. CNN & NPR act as the official State Department mouth pieces. While FOX speaks for Corporate Power at it's highest level. MSNBC is the channel of Liberal war mongers who now see killing as the best way to bring about their multi ethnic, multi cultural paradise.

So basically, US politicians can say anything, knowing US media and European media will never question a word of it. Western media is now best know for covering up news than reporting it. I offer up the case of Malaysian flight MH-17, now proven to have been shot down by a Kiev fighter plane. That is why all evidence is under lock and key, the wreckage in Holland is actually guarded by armed men from Australian secret security. The black box tapes have nevr been released, and never will be. The witnesses, around several hundred who have first hand evidence as to what happened in the skies, on the air fields and in Kiev Air Traffic Control are all black listed by investigators and forgotten.

While I sympathize with the author for calling out people on their hypocrisy in failing to criticize human rights abuses even handedly - even when done by omission, I must point out that the author is doing the exact same thing.

The fact is that bullets and bomb do not care whether you are a 'civilian'.

It doesn't matter who fires the bullets or the bombs.  The ordnance simply doesn't care.   The author's implication is that the only just military action is one in which innocents aren't harmed... which is to say an imaginary one.

War is a contest of wills taken to its ultimate conclusion.  There is no such thing as a war in which civilians are not killed.  Such an idea is less real than the tooth fairy...because at least parents can replicate the tooth-fairy's results, while no one anywhere can produce the sterile kind of war the author is proposing.

The problem with such articles is that they speak to an echo chamber of people who have already decided...usually without looking at any evidence.

For the record...no matter how hard one may try to target bombs at only 'legitimate' targets, the only way to avoid killing innocents is to suicide before making any choices.   Because even inaction can cause the deaths of others.  It is the military equivalent of Bastiat's "Seen and Unseen".

As several people have already written, who cares what Mitt Romney thinks.  Even the American voting public didn't care what Mitt Romney thought, as he lost to an imbecile like BO.  As far as McCain, the man never met a war he didn't like .. for some belated reason he has the reputation of being a military genius, but the reality probably relates more to defense contractor satisfaction than true defense concerns.

If the point is that people are dieing in Yemen at the hands of the Saudis and it gets no air play in the USA, then I think you can do a bit better than making it look like some Republican conspiracy.  The entire ME is such a cluster-f that it can't be explained properly outside of an entire library of articles, you certainly don't even have an interesting point let alone an important one.  How about a proper discussion of the true players and sides in the everlasting conflict?  How about something on where things are going and how a dark-horse political change could possibly shake things up?  But that all takes a bit of research and won't make you popular with the Bush-Cheney haters (even though that bus left the station 7 years ago).

You have to remember that most of those people are psychopaths

“Psychopaths are unable to form emotional attachments or feel real empathy with others, although they often have disarming or even charming personalities. Psychopaths are very manipulative and can easily gain people’s trust. They learn to mimic emotions, despite their inability to actually feel them, and will appear normal to unsuspecting people... When committing crimes, psychopaths carefully plan out every detail in advance and often have contingency plans in place. Unlike their sociopathic counterparts, psychopathic criminals are cool, calm, and meticulous.” - Psychology Today

SA blocked a Dutch proposal to the UN to have an UN investigation conducted into the killing of civilians in Yemen. Then SA introduced its own resolution to support the Yemen government (that SA supports with its bombing raids) in their own investigation. That resolution was accepted. No bets on what the outcome of that official Yemen investigation will be.

Excellent article

Since, for whatever reason, the overwhelming majority of the media seems loathe to do thier job and broach this subject with politicians, everybody else residing in a nation whose gov't claims an unconscionable alliance with the brutal autocracy that is Saudi Arabia should be incessantly yelling the following question at their elected representatives:

WHY?!

The 'enemy of my enemy is my friend' meme only holds until your 'friends' exhibit behaviour worse than your enemies; and SA has that in freaking spades.

Saudi Arabia has been the main booster of Islamic fundamentalist groups since the Soviet–Afghan War, where they, along with the CIA bankrolled Osama bin Laden. More recently, SA, along with other Gulf monarchies have been supporting ISIS/ISIL/Daesh. No doubt, Saudi money is greasing the palms of many members of Congress. It is always a treat to hear from that great patriot and former member of the Keating 5, Sen John McCain. Truly impressive.
