Furious Auto Workers Demand More Than "Hot Dogs And Hamburgers" As US Car Sales Soar
If you’re a mega corporation, one of the most annoying things about employees is that they expect to be paid for their work and as if that’s not enough, they also tend to draw a parallel between the performance of the company and what their labor is worth.
Fortunately, the combination of ZIRP-assisted, EPS-inflating buybacks and the relative powerlessness of the American worker has served to preserve the divide between corporate management and everyday employees, but every once in awhile, beleaguered laborers start to get the idea that they’re entitled to a greater share of what they effectively create and that translates directly into calls for higher wages.
This situation is exacerbated when the peasantry gets together in the form of organized labor which unfairly seeks to deprive management of its capitalistic right to keep almost all of the profits from the widgets their employees produce.
Given the above, it comes as no surprise that the subprime loan-assisted boom in auto sales has auto workers asking for a larger piece of the pie. Here’s WSJ:
Automobiles flew off dealer lots last month at the fastest pace in 10 years, but the good times are stirring tension between U.S. auto makers and their unionized workers that threatens to undercut the industry’s rebound.
United Auto Workers union members at Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV this week rejected for the first time in three decades a tentative agreement as inadequate, and Ford Motor Co. faces a walkout at a big truck factory as soon as Sunday.
As buyers flood dealer lots, snapping up pricey pickups and sport-utility vehicles that deliver fat profits to General Motors Co., Ford and Fiat Chrysler, factory workers are demanding an end to the concessions that put the U.S. industry back on its feet after near collapse seven years ago.
“We got a catered meal of hot dogs and hamburgers as our thanks while others, I’m sure, got big bonuses,” said Phil Reiter, a 44-year-old union member referring to a recent production milestone at Fiat Chrysler’s Toledo, Ohio, Jeep factory. That plant on Tuesday rejected a UAW supported contract by a more than 4-to-1 ratio.
And while “a catered meal of hot dogs and hamburgers” should clearly be enough, these greedy assembly line workers still want more, which of course means that the auto industry needs to simply stop hiring them:
On Thursday, the UAW confirmed that 65% of its Fiat Chrysler members spurned Fiat Chrysler’s offer, the first time in more than 30 years a proposed bargaining deal was voted down. The decision is a blow to the UAW, which has tried to reverse a persistent decline in union auto jobs by accepting concessions.
Obviously, we've employed a bit of sarcasm in our presentation here, but the simple fact is that no matter what side of the organized labor debate you fall on, the situation depicted in the following graphic simply isn't sustainable...
...but we imagine that in today's jobs market, workers' complaints may fall on largely deaf ears because after all, manufacturing jobs clearly aren't important when it comes to sustaining America's feudal "robust" economic recovery:

Enjoy your hotdog while it lasts Phil - next time youse gonna get salted peanuts and mini pretzels (and one of these as added consolation of course).
The question is whether these large unionized corporarion employees have any less of a feeling of entitlement than the .gov parasites. But like just about everyone else they are living in a state of suspended animation since the bailouts in 2008-9.
We did this already in the 80's, a tit for tat between the mgt and labor which lead to higher wages for both, and finallly mgt farming out labor overseas. Then pensions being payed beyond the life of the product that was made forcing consumer prices to skyrocket, and then products being cheapened to compete with the insanity created by the indusrty. so lets continue to do what failed and call it progress, no one will notice, and if they do, there is nothing they can about it because it's now legislated., Democracy at it's best, just sayin.
Back when I was at T they had this problem all the time. They'd give out hats, shirts, coffee cups all the time, and everyone hated it. "Stop giving us this crap and give us a real bonus/raise"!
They never did guve raises that matched inflation, or any bonus worth spitting on, but they did stop handing out the crap.
These overpaid union whinebabies deserve a big dick up their ass.....fuck'em
In the beginning, it was part "it takes work to make money" and also part "it takes money to make money".
With the inevitable advance of robotics, it will soon be only "it takes money to make money".
And it doesn't matter if that money is a big fat phoney $200 trillion derivatives hairball now, because the money it will make will be real enough after the phoney value unwinds.
So keep blaming it on the "worker's greed", dummies!
Union workers must have long dicks because they have been fucking their own selves in the ass for a long time.
Asking for a wage increase at the end of the bubble. Must be Harvard grads.
Actually, the dummies are the ones excusing the worker's greed, dummy.
Fuck management. It is not their company. They are just self important placeholders. I have yet to see a good leader. Self confident, yes. Truely deserving of the pay imbalance, not a chance.
you talking about cop unions right?? totally agree
It's all make believe,
72 month no interest loan offered by Ford... no wonder trucks are flying off the shelf
Whatever happened to the one year paid sabbatical 30 year UAW guys could take? It helped production ever so much. And do they still have those "resource centers" where the laid off had to go to maintain certian benefits and pay levels? Everyday, people went to those waiting to be called back to work. Not allowed to use phones, just watch TV. The compnay would torture the union man while the union man raped the company. Fascinating. I suppose its all over now.
FORWARD BERNIE'S SOVIET!
Do they know that robots don't need hamburgers to be motivated and work 24/7?
But what the hey, sure! Go ask for another raise! Ask more money! A 25% raise should be possible for sure! Strike!
It's one of the few years that the automobile industry is making a profit. Let's all get our cut man! Burn the place down if need be!
Do you know that robots don't buy cars or pay taxes?
Not yet, anyway...
Just wait until the robots' unionize.
edit: see nutjob below.
They are complaining about burgers and hot dogs?!
wtf?!
Spoiled brats!
They were served spoiled brats...from the local unionized mob butcher shop.
Hey! They're vegetarians, damn it!
Fuck your management hot dogs and hamburgers - we want organic mediterranean salads and wine.
I, for one, welcome our new robot overlords...
Looking forward to robot: management, executives, and shareholders. Then the robot workers will get deprived of oil and maintenance.
Only if the bot is making instruments of WAR!
Only if the bot is making instruments of WAR!
If corperations can be made intk people, why not robots? F'n tax their freeloading hydrolic sevo asses!
Oh yeah, well bite my splintery, wooden @ss!
If you are relying on your workers, whom you pay, to buy your products with the money you pay them, you're going to have problems.
nah.. they expect buyers to just go into debt and default like all of American'ts
Here is a thought. Every robot has to have an ID number. And for every hour it " works" the company needs to remit to Social Security. Here I am, giving fucked up ideas to a fucked up system.
The people that design, build and service them do.
Meet your robot replacement Phil. He wont agitate, and will even turn the lights out.
Try this, why dont you and your union brothers start your own car company and pay yourselves $100 per hour for a 20 hour week. See how many cars you sell. and what kind of a pension you get.
Until then, the shareholder/owners of the company can pay management whatever the fuck they like, and replace your sorry ass with a robot.
Just look at how they make cars at the tesla plan, not to many workers there. And that only means detroit will follow.
Right, as long as each Billionaire buys 1000 cars each everything just keeps on rolling
Those selfish fucks!
Robotics the answer...
Also the answer for 90% of "management". Nobody to "manage" if got robotics, just optimize the programming
But it's Phil and his work-a-day unwashed masses that BUY the autos. Mgmt at most levels get new cars through lease deals for even their whole families. Those ain't "sales", or financed. Tricky accounting maybe, but no free lunches.
American business can't figure out that if they pay their workers a living wage, all boats rise on the tide. Now we got so few jobs of decent quality; most having been outsourced and offshored, that if it weren't for Free Money given to the Too Big To Shares, the nation would have collapsed 8yrs ago.
Hamburgers & hotdogs! The fucking bastards ought have to eat cake! Damn their rotten ambitions for a living wage anyway!
How bout them GM bondholders? Maybe in all these "record sales & profits" they ought be paid off? Would Be THE RIGHT THING TO DO.... But who remembers those defrauded by Fed Govt. How many millions are there?
You figure we're still in Kansas, Dorothy? Oh, you're from that even more insane environ out in the desert. Suppose you figure you got a right to subsidized or trucked-in water, don'tcha?
Americans better be sticking up for their neighbors and friends; there ain't really nothing else going for you. It was UNION benefits that caused other public and private corporations to have to provide Health Insurance, and other group benefits as well as match wages. You would still be an impoverished bus-rider if it weren't for Unions and all they did to help make a middle-class below those who owned corporations and large family businesses.
These corporate bastards got rid of their pension plans with the risk on their shoulders and gave you LESS Benefit, but the carrot of self direction. How's that worked for you? All these fucks will do is cheat you day in/day=out.
"It was UNION benefits that caused other public and private corporations to have to provide Health Insurance"
Mmm, nope.
https://www.sharecare.com/health/health-insurance/employer-sponsored-health-insurance
Why do you buffoons always point to unionista demands a century ago like they're relevant to the bullshit they demand now?
Algos can replace managers as well.
Then they should quit. Their jobs will be replaced inside of 2 years anyway.
Dear US Car Manufacturers
You will never see a penny from me, again, in my lifetime. You built shitty products that we had to buy from shitty dealerships (a model you constructed), with shitty maintenance and shitty features, becasuse, at the time, we didn't know that thyere was any means of competition other than by other car companies that built shitty products. We didnt' know how shitty your shit really was...until Japan started to send us cars, with oil/transmission lines and water lines, all color coded, and in precise alignment.
We watched your union workers taking alcohol breaks (somethin I endorse), and producing the worst shit on the planet, and you were too dumb to stop lying to usabout how bad you really were.
So, now, these days. I have no trust in our war criminal government, I have no faith or cedit, in the mega-Companies, nor will I accept any explanation or apology for what tranhspired back in 2008.
You are criminal vermin that should be shot on sight
[How's that for feedback?]
All your wages are belong to us.
Come on, it was like a cookout, you blue collar types LOVE cookouts, the marketing and HR whizzes told us so!
Screw unions.
I heard the "Hoffa Burga" was a big hit.
Unions are perfectly capitalist enterprises. There's no rule that says labor should automatically give up the economic leverage inherent in free association for no compensation, especially when the other side plays hardball 24/7.
They are free to organize, and management is free to fire them.
One thing is for sure: when management and labor get on the same side, guess who loses? Shareholders and customers.
They're never on the same side. The parties arrive at a mutual agreement.
You meant to say that after being protected by law from being fired, unionistas blackmail companies with walkouts, shutdowns, violence, etc until those companies accept the offer they cannot refuse.
It's not the unions that are the problem. It's the legislation surrounding them.
Well, also the mobsters surrounding them.
DP
Thank goodness there are no crooks in the upper echelons of corporations and banks.
Agreed, Unions are subject to the principles of economics until the government steps in. Then the whole system is messed with
"It's the legislation surrounding them."
No, it's the politicians surrounding that are bought wih lobbist cash. We need a one time swep of evary post in government, with an eye to forcfully eliminating entire branches.
OK, screw the way unions are configured and managed now, but once upon a time unions also gave us the 8-hour day and the 5-day week, and they accelerated the creation of the American middle class. And they got children out of the mines and factories.
The other thing people tend to forget is that unions have apprenticeship programs, which allow the experience and skills of the old-timers to get passed down.
With corrupted unions, labor has lost its wage bargaining power, so all gains in productivity have been going right to the top, with no improvement to workers' wages in 40 years.
Wages are flat because union workers have to allocate more of their contract earnings to healthcare. So they're sort of treading water. The non union counterparts are drowning.
Don't forget the dues they're contributing the Union wll give to Hillary, in your equation.
once upon a time unions also gave us the 8-hour day and the 5-day week, and they accelerated the creation of the American middle class. And they got children out of the mines and factories.
A fairy tale it is. That had everything to do with improvements in technology and productivity. All eaten away by taxes, regulations and union extortion.
Horseshit, 42 - if you think improvement in technology and productivity would have been passed down to the slaves on the assembly lines by a benign management, you need to change your hallucinogens. The community of workers in the factories and mills had to stand together to get their share - my dad lived those times - management was truly unbelievable in their greed in the 1920's and 1930's; and it took organization and a 'all for one, one for all' attitude to stand up to the excesses.
Now of course, all is well. Most of the manufacturing jobs have been sent overseas, and what is left is roboticized - the unions are finally crushed! Hurrah! Pour me another martini.
But I got to say, your avatar is really, really cute.
Slave employment is a thing of the past. Improvements in technology and productive are passed down to employees by way of a competitive job market. It's those improvements that pay the bills, not union demands.
Employees are paid according to their market value, not company profits. The job market is just as robust as the consumer market.
"Greed" is another weasel word. Who the hell doesn't try to get as much as they can with the least effort. It's built into our biology.
Most of the manufacturing jobs have been sent overseas, and what is left is roboticized
A manufacturer has to satisfy consumer demand for value at the lowest price or die. Cars are so complicated today, I don't think they can be built without robots.
It's those improvements that pay WHOSE bills?
WTF happened to technology making EVERYONE's life easier, richer, and more leisurely?
Why do you believe a worker should reap the benefits of what the robot built? That's straight out of the FSA playbook, poopy pants.
Hey fat fuck.. your little middle management gig will be outsourced to a fucking Habeeb soon enough and you'll be EBT'ing after you blow your shitty severence
So the hallucinogens you're taking say that management was unbelieveably greedy but somehow they wouldn't implemenet technology via their workers that would allow them to recognize all those gains in productivity.
You should stop swallowing whatever man batter your swallowing by the gallon because it's affecting your cognitive abilities.
So you appreciate lower wages and a diminished standard of living.
Screw the none union scabs
Unions are one sided gangs of selfserving followers. How does that not make their members scabs. Oh right. Scabs are operating on their own initiative.
Nobody forces workers to accept the wage offer when they were hired. And they can always quit.
The feeling of entitlement runs deep in union psychology. When profits run high, they want more. When companies are losing money, it's not their problem.
I don't have the numbers, but I seem to recall that their pension funds are seriously underfunded. Not to mention that the economy is crashing at the same time whey want raises.
Bunch of losers.
Maybe 20 years ago, not true recently.
Higher wage employees were bought out/early retirement and the unions agreed to lower wages for new hires. Now business has improved, but the automakers want to hang on to those lower wage scales that were agreed to during the bust.
Higher wage employees were bought out/early retirement and the unions agreed to lower wages for new hires. Now business has improved, but the automakers want to hang on to those lower wage scales that were agreed to during the bust.
Your perception is very narrow. Those companies up to their ears in debt and underfunded pension. From here on in sales have nowhere to go but down. A lot more layoffs to come.
go back to eating your VP's cock - everyone knows that Unions knew that benefits would be the rising cost of compensation so they gave up wage increases for DECADES.... since that was the only real way to keep pace with cost of living.. it ain't their fault that healthcare went apeshit and the dollar down the toilet.. how about you go back and give them gold instead of those CONTRACTUAL benefit promises?
they gave up wage increases for DECADES....
Kindly cite that wouldja. Which unions, which companies gave up wage increases for decades.
"lower wages for new hires."
You'll note how you completely sidestepped the truth on that. That makes you a disingenuous liar.
Screw Government Unions.
FIFY.
They should at least get hoodies, with the company emblem on the back...
Good thing Target™ doesn't make carz, then! :>D
I had to go car shopping for the first time in over 10 years. I read ZH daily and I was still shocked at the prices of BOTH new and used cars. How the fuck is this sustainable is beyond me !!! I guess the 15% they were willing to finance for a low score FICO is what keeps the Ponzi going.
If there is easy financing for the slaughter-able masses, the prices will rise abnormally.

New in 2004 Ford F-250 with 8' western plow - $14,000
Ford F250 today without plow - $30,000
That's the non-inflation the Fed is talking about. That's why COLA is zero.
...wait a sec!
I'll gladly pay you tomorrow ,with burgers, for work you do today. C'mon don't be a cheap bastard.
Bigger scam than you think. Social security uses CPI W which always shows the smallest rise in prices. To attract buyers for TIPs the treasury uses CPI-U, which is probably too low also but gives the largest rise in prices of the CPI numbers published.
I was pricing some cars on manheim.com yesterday.
Exotic inventory is non-existent. I have a dealers licence, and called some buddies.
Everyone is running, " Brazilian Style" into commodities.
BTW, I was looking for a low mile '15 Z06.
My wife heard a radio ad today for a popular local VW dealer selling their cars... I shit you not... 40% of MSRP. Now it's possible she misheard, but I doubt she misheard 40%
Agree, car prices are insane. I've gotten 2 new cars so far in my life, a Toyota Corolla around 2000 for about $12K and a Honda Fit in 2007 for about $17K. Sticking with the Honda for as long as it lasts.
My husband had a lease ending and we spent some time looking at vehicles. Thought it would be nice to have one SUV/larger sedan in the family for road trips. Stuck with a cheap compact after seeing pricing for those.
Helped my mom change cars recently too. Sold her 10+ year old Camry, got a late model used Civic. With TT&L it was nearly 20K for a low mileage used Civic, and we shopped for awhile. Interesting to note that there is only about $2K price difference between the compacts and the full size vehicles now, e.g. Civic vs. Accord, Corolla vs. Camry.
"My husband had a lease ending "
Hruh!? If you're already dumb enough to lease a car, why are you price shopping? You do understand that when you're leasing a car, you're paying the dealer's car payment, right? You're throwing away mass quantities of money.
I've seen people crowing how "good" it is in Europe, that they have "the highest standard of living on earth".
Well, the truth is they don't. You talk about car prices in the US? A base VW Golf, that costs $20k in the US, is about $50k in most of Europe. And then they add $19% to 25% VAT (sales tax) on top of that $50k. And guess what? The average income (middle class workers) is about the same as in the US !!!
I wouldn't complain too much about the cost of things.....
Phil, you work on a contract. If you don't like it that's what bargaining is for. Stop crying about bonuses on the sale side.
Car Sales Soar On Subprime Lending!!!!!!!
Hmmmm? Sounds familiar? I think I will buy 2 tow trucks with Quick Pick attachments
Many of those blue collar workers make twice what a family doctor makes so they need to quite complaining. Especially since they tons of benefits and a real health plan all paid for by someone else.
A family doctor where? In Sudan?
They have Obama care in "Sudan" now, Mother fucker ?
Yes, that's where it originated.
No, it originated in Kenya.
LOL True
U.S national average for family physician = $163,000
If an autoworker makes twice that I'll eat my own dick.
He probably exaggerated a bit but I know from my relative docs who took a huge hit with HMOs then now another one with Obamacare disaster. Plus, they still have all the liability and work long long days. My relative docs and friends who are docs all agree on one thing; medical care has dropped significantly since HMOs care into being, esp for more complex issues like cancer, Alheimer's, etc since reimbursement dropped about 40-50%.
In fact, none of them take any form of Obamacare. they would rather see fewer patients then get 10 cents on the dollar they tell me. So with Obama's tax bill, you "get coverage" with much less access to doctors seems like. For awhile, even MDAnderson in Houston was not taking Obama's care. I do not know if that has changed. So it's a fake kind of insurance for many.
Family Docs are getiing phased out in favor of medical groups...one of these just bought out my docs practice. Now you basically see a gatekeeper physicians assistant who will make a referral to a specialist. And yes, with a $6,000 per year deductible Obamacare isn't affordable, and the docs know the patients can't come up with that kind of scratch. So they don't honor that form of insurance.
It sounds as though after trashing 'major medical' insurance plans during the run up to Obamacare, they've eliminated those types of plans and replaced them with far more expensive, yet less effective, govt-approved 'major medical' type plans. Excellent work.
The way I see, they played a shell game. Basically decreased the monthly payment and increased deductibles and co-pays. Where it gets more expensive is the specialization. You used to go to the doc and if you had, say shoulder pain, he would prescribe a course of action. Now, you see a P.A, they administer a wellness exam and then determine specific codes. Then you are referred to a specialist. So the whole process has been expanded, therefore making it more costly. I think docs are being purposely pushed out in this manner.
fuck docs.. replace with automated Kiosks in the mall.. a pin prick for blood, (change the needle yourself, just like checking out your own food at the groceries), take your temp, and answer a few button press questions and let it google a diagnosis.. it doesn't really matter what you have since they will push whatever fucking new drug big pharma wants to poison you with anyway
$163,000 is crappy considering the average grad from med school prob has $160k+ in loans and has to work 16 hour days when he/she graduates. Plus, out of that $163k the doctors has to buy his/her own health insurance, malpractice, etc.
I don't think $163 is that great. And when you throw in the hassle of Obamacare, it has to be a nightmare for them. Not worth it.
Medical School at $278,000 Means Even Bernanke Son Has Debt (2013)http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2013-04-11/medical-school-at-278-...
I know a Doc who left private practice. He went to a hospital that made a deal to pay off his student loans if he stayed for 5 years. And gave him a new beamer. Adaptation. Use it or die off.
Don't you mean " Government - use it or die off".
OT, but here's as good a place as any:
Tyler, why did you delete 75+ posts from the Sam Power twatter article?
http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2015-10-02/foreign-policy-140-characters-o...
AlaricBalth posted some points from Cass Sunstein's statist propaganda regarding "conspiracy theory." I posted my thoughts regarding probability, fundamental concepts about existence and events. Some people even appreciated these thoughts.
They are all gone. Temporary re-jiggering of comments? I think not. Just flat out censoring.
You do this to us one more time, and I'm outta here for good.
There is no honor in silent suppression.
Comments about the governments chief proponent of censoring got censored. Shouldn't that cause some sort of spacial vortex which will make all time and matter cease to exist?
That is bullshit. Sorry I missed that thread. And FWIW, I really enjoy reading your guys well reasoned and thoughtful comments here.
Found it. The whole thread is out there in Google Cache. Nothing is ever gone from the Web.
Looks like the delete started on the very second post by HonkyShogun and cascaded down from there. User HonkyShogun is nothing but a memory now.

Samantha Power married Cass Sunstein. Enough said...
Sunstein co-authored a book called "Conspiracy Theories", the authors of which declare that there are five responses a government can take toward conspiracy theories: "We can readily imagine a series of possible responses. (1) Government might ban conspiracy theorizing. (2) Government might impose some kind of tax, financial or otherwise, on those who disseminate such theories. (3) Government might itself engage in counterspeech, marshaling arguments to discredit conspiracy theories. (4) Government might formally hire credible private parties to engage in counterspeech. (5) Government might engage in informal communication with such parties, encouraging them to help."
Hey Cass!!! Conspiracy theories arise, in most cases from fact, and a distrust of the government. 87% of the people don't trust the government because it is primarily run by people like you.
Cass Sunstein and Samantha Power are the perfect clueless, influential couple. That combination make them extremely dangerous.

Classic statist language replacing gods with gubbamin... they are not only clueless, they are simply devoid of life and spirit. Sure they exist and move around and impose tyranny on others and stuff, but what good is existing when youse aint got no life, no spirit.
Don't fear them or feel bad for them, for they are nor living nor dead - they are lifeless
LOL...yeah, can't have anyone knowing that she is married to the guy doing everything he can to destroy truth and freedom of speech on the internet.
I'm kind stunned and speechless if this place won't allow public information to be posted as it relates to the topic at hand (Samantha Powers tweet).
BoP.
Thank you for the previous comment above.
@Alaric: Great sleuthing!, and thanks for re-posting that comment set.
@BoP: Likewise, friend. The years continue to go by, and here we all are still, watching situations and people getting lamer and lamer. I guess well-thought-out-and-written posts at ZH are the last remaining good things we have left in the Internet world.
@Grumps, noless, and besnook - you guys were totally correct, as Balth found regarding the banned member HonkyShogun and the comment chain that disappeared underneath him.
--
Damn... in that case, many a great comment hath disappear due to the crappy software implementation of Drupal. Always knew Drupal sucked ass - didn't know it sucked this much.
What usually happens (and has happened why I have had previous incarnations deleted), when one poster gets banned from ZH all of their posts are deleted and then all of the posts of the people responding to their posts get deleted as well. Someone is missing. Who is it now?
Only ZH can tell you why they ban individuals. I have seen many people make seemingly worse comments than I have made and still not gotten banned.
i think im one of the few people to ever actually get banned from zerohedge, i eventually got another account obviously, but the old one is in some kind of limbo, can't register the name and comments aren't visible, this accounts comments have been wiped as well in the past.
that said i don't bother commenting that much anyway because whats the point?
shits fucked beyond belief so might as well just wait it out and maybe someday they'll lift the curtain.
I'm new here and the education afforded by these articles and comments is utterly priceless. I've even learned a ton of new stock market phrases.
Also, make sure to enjoy the history we are living through. Remember the details. I know this from experience. And, what effect will this Mid-East madness have on the Markets? What an AMAZING time to be alive !
actually, it is a garbage time to be ALIVE.. but it is a fantastic time to be a total braindead groupthinked sheep that would never have a chance in hell to 'live' like a retard a few decades ago
if someone in the thread is banned the entire thread disappears. it is censorship but not necessarily directed at you in this case.
What did they give up when sales were down?
They've had burgers and hot dogs, now they want a bigger piece of pie too!!! Greedy bastards. Let's outsource
and offshore their jobs, that'll teach their ass to seek commensurate remuneration!! Let's see them buy a new car on
a bartender's or waiter's wage!! Muh. ah, ha,ha, wait......
I'll take a t-bone and baked potato with some vegis. and a full undisturbed hour to eat it. :)
Capitalism works because the banks get interest on every bit of money in the system and live parasitically off of the people who do value adding work. It also works because the owners of business pay less for labor than it is worth and live parasitically off of the labor of others.
Without that and the collusion between banks and owners we could not have capitalism.
Don't get me started on communism because communism is the exact same thing as capitalism except all of the workers suffer more. Communism is a lie. There is no communism, only elitism and slaves. Show me communism where the leaders suffer as much as the workers and then we "might" have real communism.
Peak vehicle sales moment, marked by workers feeling cheated.
Sales soaring - why - because the Federal Government has seen fit to give financially unqualified buyers zero % interest loans for long durations.
Just like in 2007 when housing prices hit peak and sales went to the moon.
When car repos explode and there is 200 days of inventory in the lots, these workers will treasure the days of 2015 when they worked overtime. Same for management.
Oil prices are low, UAW shitheads. Are your employers allowed to cut your wages when oil prices go up and people aren't buying vehicles especially pickups. What a bunch of retards.
The auto workers have it wrong, but only because a system that revolves around money to force labor is slavery, just as much as a system that uses whips.
More money does not fix the problem of slavery.
Poor people have no voice. As poor nations have no voice. Money solves a lot of problems.
lots of stuff make auto work less valuable than it used to be. first when you hire in you get a shift assigned and you wait til you have enough time to get to move to a shift of your choice. usually work 2nd shift, young people have to go years sometimes as older workers take the first and third shifts. then you know they hire when the cars are selling and just as fast lay off when they are not. you can work 5 -6 yrs then wham you are off til someone retires and your senority is enough to come back. the benefits run out and after the 2008 bankruptcy many lost homes and cars. it is about to happen again. after 5 yrs chrysler terminates you and does not have to recall you.
is the pay high? yes! are you willing to submit to going 5-10 yrs with no choice of shift no choice of vacation time doing the hardest jobs and being laid off at any time. never advancing just looking at 30-40 yrs of comming in the same old doors to a loud hot dirty hard job with no security and no appreciation or respect from superiors. where hard workers are routinely abused with harder jobs because someone else is medically coded or is a union bigshots kid or is a girlfriend to some boss... they all want to be. or for christ sake is just fucking lazy. so dont ask why auto workers want some more money. and dont take it wrong but who the fuck makes anything of value around here?
Your sympathies may be misguided. The executives have the burden of knowing at any moment they may have to
deploy their golden parachute. Can you imagine the stress of that Damocles hanging over your head? Bloody awful!!
You'll get nothing and like it.
These dummies will never learn. Labor is expendible - but not for the union, your complaints about hot dogs would have gotten you fired.
Your labor does not contribute ANYTHING to the company other than as an annoyance and cost. The supervisors do everything - they get paid a nice 500k bonus for the hard work they did. Those higher up get even more.
Its all green pastures - fire everyone, hire robots and 10c an hour foreign workers. Use any and all available money, including borrowing to the max, to buy back stock so that insiders can cash in on the millions of stock options they have. Stock price up = good times. No matter that given enough time eventually there are so few workers that there is no actual product being sold ...
BUT - there is always the govt - print money and buy up all that excess inventory - cannot have a nice company like GM have a poor quarter ...
Perhaps the govt 10 year rate should be -2%. Just think of the productivity improvements when Bank of America, JPM, Goldman get paid 2% to borrow money from the govt - why not put the money borrowed up as collateral. They could borrow 50 Trillion with no need for assets, no need to pay it back as the money is already re-deposited - pure profits which will trickle down to the rest of us.
if tax payer money wasnt available to bail out the car companies and give the ceo/share holders big money and also bail out the unions....neither would ave anything. the whole article is off...cut the bailouts and let them all eat shit for lunch.
Well, that is one hell of a big hamburger.
Union employees appear to be the LAST to understand finance and economics.
Normal person: I get paid for 8 hours work despite how many widgets the company I work for sells
Union Auto-Worker: I should get paid for when I do work, and when I dont work, and if we have a record month I should get a bonus as well.

The Daily Economist
i always get a kick out of working stiffs bashing unions. dumbfucks! that's why you are labor and always will be.
I thought car sales where in the dumpster-all that channel stuffing, and the millions parked in the desert gathering dust
Take the bonus from the banks underwriting the subprime auto loans...
Who would buy an American car!?
The companies and the unions are Washingtons puppets.
Stay out that shit show.
....because there are no unions in japan, korea or europe........
Who? No one that could afford better.
It almost seems to me that the ZIRP / subprime auto loans have caused the whole corporate profitability vs workers wages relationship to be stood on its head.
No sooner the workers get their increased wages (because of the results of the ZIRP/suprime loans) then the sudden drop in demand occurs once the freebies stop. In theory, if workers gain concessions, corporations are faced with a sudden drought in sales (Subprime loans end) just as the new concessions to the workers kick in.
Bottom line: A classic case of FED manipulation creating distortions and wide swings in the marketplace. Just like housing, student loans.
The cow got the worst deal.
Does this mean that the UAW is going to reimburse bondholders for their money that was stolen by the obomination and given to the UAW in return for political support ?
The ONLY part of the TARP funds that were NOT repaid to the US Treasury is the money used to bail out the UAW.
The UAW would go the way of the Dodo bird if it wasn't for subprime auto loans and US taxpayer bailouts. Fuck these guys.
Would you rather pay their unemployment or see them work you stupid sonofabitch? 28 dollars an hour.
Ford Motor reported that CEO Mark Fields took in $18.6 million in 2014.
Chief Financial Officer Bob Shanks, who raked in $6.3 million, and
Executive Vice President of the Americas Joe Hinrichs, who got $6.1 million.
Ford’s head of operations in Europe, Jim Farley, got $4.5 million.
Earlier Fiat-Chrysler announced that CEO Sergio Marchionne was set to receive $72 million in total pay for 2014. Most of his pay package comes from bonuses and a stock award connected to Fiat’s takeover of Chrysler that led to a 61 percent surge in its share price.
Marchionne’s pay package when broken down to an average hourly rate comes to around $35,000 per hour. That compares to the $28 average hourly wage paid senior Chrysler workers
"The Obama administration’s forced restructuring of the auto industry in 2009, which was carried out at the expense of the wages and benefits of auto workers and retirees, has led to a profit surge, with the Detroit automakers making $76 billion over the last six years and $10 billion in 2014 alone."

You are really amusing to read. Feel free to move to China if you want to live in a world where the workers have to kill themselves in order to quit a job.

Screw the UAW, the horse they rode in on and the shadow it cast. The almost singlehandedly destroyed the US auto industry. They don't deserve so much as a bag of potato chips and a glass of tap water.
This was the plan all along. Toying with the workers.
"Most Buick vehicles sold in the United States after 2016 could be imported from China and Europe, according to two sources familiar with parent General Motors Co.’s plans."

UAW was already screwed back in 2009/2010.
I contracted to one of the big auto manufacturers. In 2008 the maintenance person who swept out my office reaped, on Martin Luther King Day over $700 in pay/benefits and also got one future day off of his choosing. But in 2010 when I left the UAW worker on Martin Luther King day got about $200 (including all benefits).
Cycles--Unions rise and fall and they have fallen hard already, in IMHO they deserved it.
The big three autos have been frantically buying out old-time UAW workers and replacing them with "new" ones at new terms.
Lips and assholes for you - and more!
Fact is people are lazy, and slow, generally. they work only as hard as they have to to earn the bucks they need, and complain a lot while doing so. In the world however, there are those who work harder, faster, for less money, who complain less. Now that the world is becoming an even playing field, American companies have no choice but to try get staff that are the equal of those in poorer countries. Said differently, thanks to globalization, wages and conditions will continue to worsen in developed countries, while they improve in developing countries.
Public in the USA is being gassed by either actual exhaust fumes of jetliners doing unannounced air shows or intentionally being sprayed (don't tell me its steam), poisoned via water supply, food supply in a variety of waves, additives, preservatives, GMOs, microwave meals consisting of flavor, coloring, hydrogenated oil and fructose. Once upon a time, the public food supply was supplemented with a few necessary vitamins/minerals. Not any more. Kidney failure, diverticulitis, liver disease, obesity and bypass with disabling issues of their own as time goes by. It's a full assault. Medical community has turned their patients into rats. Price of care, procedures and medical supplies/drugs factors in the coming Class Action Law Suits. Education system is no longer your father's alumni. That's another story. Cashing in on another's misfortune seems to be the motto.
That is just half of it. The elimination of the middle class is underway. The only thing between the upper class and the lower class is us. We are your customers, we see the dentists on Main Street, shop in the malls. By the time this is over, everyone will get caught up in the flush down the drain except you. Corruption kills motivation. The whole system should be reset including every CEO in place in every industry, dismantling the monopolies (allowing mergers and acquisitions to Pac-Man through industries until one is left is equivalent to Consumers en Mass putting a short stub 38 revolver to the temple of fair pricing and quality assurance, and saying good-bye to choices...just in case anyone might not realize that)
Are car sales really soaring, or are they soaring to the leasing companies related to the car manufacturers? I think the latter. Most Americanos can't afford a good deodorant, much less a new car. If there are higher sales anywhere, they are in Asia, and now with China declining into oblivion, that too is coming to an end.
Under socialism .... auto workers would make .... as much as governent employees .... and get all the benefits .... fast food workers, too ?
