Amtrak Train Derails In Vermont, 4 Reported Injured

Tyler Durden's picture

While the US coast guard and search and rescue teams scour the Caribbean seas around the Bahamas for traces of debris from the missing cargo ship El Faro, which disappeared in the eye of Hurricane Joaquin with 33 mostly American crew members aboard more than three days ago, another tragedy struck moments ago when as AP reported an Amtrak train derailed in central Vermont near Northfield.

Several media outlets reported Monday morning that Vermont State Police and local fire and rescue agencies were responding to the scene in Northfield, about 10 miles southwest of Montpelier.

NBC reports that a spokesperson for the Montpelier Fire Department said they had reports of four people injured so far. There have been no reported deaths, the spokesperson, Lt. Dana Huoppi, said.

Initial reports from the scene indicated that five cars derailed, and two tumbled over a bank, Huoppi said.

The train was the "Vermonter," the daily service that runs between St. Albans, Vermont and Washington, D.C. It is the only Amtrak service that runs on the track. Regular freight service also runs on the track.

The train is popular at this time of year with tourists looking to soak in the annual fall foliage throughout Vermont and New England.

Photos of the crash are slowly trickling courtesy of Twitter.

More as we see it.

American trains are finest in this world save for about 50 countries.  More glory to our beloved Nobel Prize Winner

Experts say US rail signaling is ‘primitive’ after officials admit an automatic safety system common elsewhere would probably have prevented the derailment

Passenger rail services in Britain and much of western Europe have for many years had automatic safety systems that warn train drivers if they are speeding and then trigger the brakes to prevent the kind of crash that killed eight and injured more than 200 in a derailment in Philadelphia on Tuesday.

The payouts to the victims and families will be enormous however, because it's not really the governments money after all.

We must outlaw trains immediately in this country in order to prevent further mass atrocities.

But without the government, who would regulate the trains and make them safe?

oh, wait....

You are corret however, there are some benefits such as, no TSA gropings (yet), larger seats that recline, larger windows, no baggage fees, and way better beer. It's also cheaper to travel with a bike.

Half of them are likely not even injured, simply see their chance at a large cash settlement.  Play your cards right and in this situation it can be like hitting the lottery.

Speaking of money holes and empty trains, wait until Ann Parker and her gang in texas build that rail from Houston to Dallas; that will destroy thousands of acres of wonderful farmland, run huge deficits and be empty 98% of the time. The wealthier folks in The Woodlands fough hard to keep it from devastating their area. Voters do not want it yet it's rammed down their throats like Obamacare.

I notice the one in Austin runs massive deficits and have seen with my own eyes the 100% empty train running north out of Austin to Cedar Park. Incredible wasteful public projects!

Yeah that thing's an embarrassment.

It actually goes from Leander to a ratty neighborhood in East Austin. And nobody wants to commute between those places.

Back in the 1980's I took OffTrack, err, I mean AmTrak, from Vermont to Miami.  It was a pleasant trip, though I did note how bombed out East Coast cities looked from trackside even then.

I often walk the RR tracks, here in rural areas it is a good way to get to fishing holes and hunting spots.  There has definately been a deterioration of tracks and ties over the decades, a slow rot that mirrors that of the country as whole.

In fact, half the RR tracks have been torn up to make recreational bike paths - one day we are gonna wish we had those railroads back.

I took it from Boston to Baltimore back in '08, and was also stunned at how bleak the cities looked.   Baltimore literally looked like it had been bombed (and I mean literally in the literal sense)...

When we lived in Vermont, we took that train from St. Albans to Washington DC.  It was a nice trip, as long as you didn't look out the windows from about Massachusetts on South.

Its ok China will come in and build a Maglev bullet train network for America.

Then they will charge us for using our own train.

Obama our dear leader will solve everything, dont you see?

Trump should come out with a plan to convert all our trains to safer mono-rail bullet trains.

If trump was president.

Trains would not only not crash, they would have casinos and beds and booze on them.

For a second there I thought this was a picture of the US economy going off the rails, only that train wreck will do a lot more damage.
