Caught On Tape: Furious French Workers Attack Air France Executives, Rip Their Clothes Off

Tyler Durden's picture

Earlier today amid the general gloom of Europe's sliding non-manufacturing PMIs, the one place that stood out like a sore thumb bucking the deteriorating trend, was France which not only posted an increase from August but also beat expectations.

We strongly doubt this metric has any basis in reality because among numerous other contrary-specific factors, Bloomberg reported that as part of Air France’s long-running spat with workers over cost cuts, violence erupted earlier today as protesters stormed a meeting where managers were presenting plans for 2,900 jobs cuts, causing executives to flee with their clothes in tatters.

According to the report, human resources chief Xavier Broseta and Pierre Plissonnier, the head of long-haul flights, scaled an eight-foot high fence to escape, shielded by security guards, with Broseta emerging shirtless and Plissonnier with his suit shredded.

Casting some serious doubt on the service PMI "recovery" is that the attacks happened Monday as Air France told its works council that after the failure of productivity talks with pilots last week some 300 cockpit crew, 900 flight attendants and 1,700 ground staff might have to go. The cuts could include the first forced dismissals since the 1990s, according to the carrier, which subsequently postponed the meeting.

The company, unhappy with the terrible publicity that the photos and video clips presented below will unveil about the corporate culture at Air France, promptly tried to downplay the incident, saying in a statement that "these attacks were made by isolated and particularly violent individuals as the demonstration by personnel on strike was going on calmly," adding that a complaint had been filed for aggravated violence. We expect many more complains will be filed before the latest surge in anger at the upcoming layoffs dissipates.

It's not just bad news for up to 3,000 soon to be unemployed workers but for Boeing too, which may be about to see the first scrapping of Dreamliner orders:

Under the savings plan announced today, Air France’s fleet would be reduced by 14 jets, with orders for Boeing Co. 787s scrapped and aging Airbus Group SE A340s phased out. The Air France-KLM Group unit indicated there was scope for compromise should unions come forward with serious savings measure.

Air France said last week it was planning cuts to jobs, jets and routes in the absence of a deal with pilots, who had been asked to work more hours for the same pay to help end annual losses that began in 2011. Government ministers had urged the sides to continue talking so that jobs could be saved.

The upcoming layoffs were once again blamed almost entirely on events in Asia: "The changes would require a shrinking of Air France’s network, with a reduction in frequencies and more sweeping seasonal capacity cuts next year, following by the termination of some routes in 2017, especially to Asia, where competition is toughest. Frequencies to 22 destinations would be affected."

Expect more outbursts of violence and even more profits for tailors in Paris, confirming the Keynesian "torn suit fallacy", because the job cuts are said to be implemented around mid-December at the earliest, or just in time for the holidays.

Meanwhile, this is the outcome as the anger of several thousand French workers finally spills over.

And roll the tape:

don't even get me started on the French.   a few years ago i was @ the PARIS airport, i got a bottle of COKE @ one of the food places.   the young lady serving handed me a small glass with ONE ICE CUBE in it for my COKE.    Very politely, i asked for more ice.   The young lady slid the glass back to me & said, "NO!"   i've been to France once, & i did find it pretentious.   i like the Middle East better, will never go back to Europe again.

I had just the opposite luck. I was sitting at a sidewalk cafe having a beer and some snacks. All the othr tables were taken. As I was finishing an older couple came by looking for a table and I signaled that I would be leaving. The owner came over and insisted that I stay, he went back into the restaurant to get a table and chairs for the couple and then gave me a complimentary beer and snacks.

For every shitty story I've heard about the French, I've enjoyed about ten like this.  Of course, you have to not be an asshole yourself.

And good job on that, Lfw!  Righteousness all around--like you'll experience in every culture I've ever been in, including French.

Of course, in the US you'll usually have to take the initiative to be an inspired salesman yourself in order to sell it to the waitress, who then takes it to the manager, whom you have to then be willing to talk sense to, but usually it works out. People do wanna find a way to being cool.  Normal people everywhere.

Why is it so organic in other countries, though, I wonder?

French are rude in Paris but you can say the same about people in any really large city in Western Europe.  I have family that live outside Marseille and I have always found it pleasant to visit them with the French people very courteous as long as I did not behave like an American tourist - loud, obnoxioius, poorly-dressed, and overbearing.

I wonder if the Air France CEO and top executives were at the recent Monaco Yacht Show.  You know, while planning these layoffs.

Because if not, they lost out on the opportunity to marvel at and purchase the world's finest yachts, complete with the world's most extravagant interiors as designed by only the globe's finest.  At minimum, they could have met with one of the brokers available to at least arrange a rental so that overworked executives could maybe gather for a week or so to luxuriate and alleviate the work stress that they are constantly subject to.

( i don't believe any typical employees such as those subject to layoff were present ).

I won't disparage the French. We had a FFL Captain in my Ranger class, and he was a very good soldier. Without French support, our revolution wouldn't have been quite so easy. I'm thankful to France for that. However, I largely consider that debt to have been paid in, in full, with WW1.

I'd have no problem whatsoever, fighting alongside with French troops, in combat, and in particular the FFL.

He fired almost every single one of them, over 11,000 out of 13,000 in all, and then they rehired only the ones they wanted. Without the union....

I haven't played monopoly for a few years, but as I recall when the game was over, there was one guy sitting there with all the money and property, and everybody else was bored and pissed off, sitting there looking at him smirk.

Well...if we were so inclined, we'd choose who would be the banker and start the game over again.

Monopoly Endgame

If your opponent scoops up Boardwalk, Park Place, North Carolina Avenue, Pacific Avenue, both utilities, the four railroads, and the other properties on the board --- that’s it, the game’s over.

The other players, who were once let’s say “middle class” property owners, will go bankrupt as they are forced to pay higher and higher costs for rent and services, utilities, and transportation.  Eventually, one player has all the money and the losers are left standing out in the cold.

But what if the Monopoly game didn’t end there?

What if the once-middle-class-but-now-broke players kept rolling the dice and kept going around the board, using their credit cards and lines of credit to stay in the game?

While they’re running up massive personal or small-business debt, the monopolist who owns everything is finding it harder and harder to collect income from the increasingly impoverished once-middle-class-but-now-broke players.  They can’t afford to pay rent, they can’t afford to pay utilities, and they can’t afford to ride on the railroads.

Eventually, when the consumers run out of both cash *AND* credit and can no longer spend any money, even the monopolist goes broke!!!

Then, not only is the game over for the impoverished once-middle-class-but-now-broke players, but it is over for the monopolist.

In the real world, this is a description of a *CRASH*.

This is remarkably similar to how real-world economics works when it is deprived of a stable middle class.

Did you know?  The board game of Monopoly was invented when America’s Gilded Age was in its final death throes.  The game’s inventor, Lizzie Magie, named it “The Landlord’s Game.”  But as she said “It might well have been called the ‘Game of Life,as it contains all the elements of success and failure in the real world, and the object is… the accumulation of wealth.”

Lizzie was a Georgist (one who follows the teachings of economist Henry George), and she believed that things found in nature, particularly land itself but also things like mineral wealth, are part of the commons (owned by the people) and thus should really be owned by “we the people,”… and NOT by private profiteers.

It was an ideology directly born out of the times --- The Gilded Age --- when Robber Barons used monopolies in steel, oil, rail, and finance to dominate the American economy.  They built vast fortunes by owning all the stops on the Monopoly board of America, while working people’s conditions collapsed to the point where we went into the Great Depression.

Carnegie, Astor, Rockefeller, Morgan, and a few dozen other recognizable names built massive monopolies while ruthlessly destroying any upstart that dared try to compete.  There was big money to be made in post-Civil War America, now crisscrossed by the railroads.  America’s GDP doubled, growing at the fastest rate ever!

But that wealth didn’t trickle down; they’d mastered the game of monopoly.

The rest of America was going bankrupt.

In the census of 1900, per capita income was less than $5,000 annually in today’s dollars.  And more and more Americans who were once self-employed had their lives uprooted and were thrown under the juggernaut of the Robber Barons.

In 1850, prior to this so-called Gilded Age, most Americans worked for themselves.  But by 1900, the majority of Americans worked for someone else--- in many cases--- the monopolists.

In his 1888 State of the Union address in which President Grover Cleveland said “the citizen is… trampled to death beneath an iron heel,” He also called out the *Corporatist Corruption of Congress* by the Robber Barons.

We discover that the fortunes realized by our manufacturers are no longer solely the reward of sturdy industry and enlightened foresight,” he said, “but that they result from the discriminating favor of the Government and are largely built upon undue exactions from the masses of our people”.

President Cleveland’s 1888 reality was our most prominent Founding Father’s worst fear.  On December 20, 1787, Thomas Jefferson wrote to James Madison about his concerns regarding the first draft of our new proposed Constitution, namely that it didn’t include a Bill of Rights and, in particular, it didn’t include a “restriction of monopolies and corporations”.

And this is why Lizzie Magie invented that early version of what we today call the board game of Monopoly.  It was her hope, and that of many, that the stranglehold of the monopolists of the era could somehow be broken.

She said, “Let the children once see clearly the gross injustice of our present… system and when they grow up, if they are allowed to develop naturally, the evil will soon be remedied.”

Early on, even before Parker Brothers acquired the patent on Monopoly, turning it into the game we know today, well-to-do college students would play the game in fraternity houses at the behest of economics teachers.  The game was meant to answer a question about the current economy.

An early instruction manual for the game in 1925 reads, “At the start of the game every player is provided with the same amount of capital and presumably has exactly the same chance of success as every other player.  The game ends with one person in possession of all the money.  What accounts for the failure of the rest, and what one factor can be singled out to explain the obviously ill-adjusted distributions of the community’s wealth which this situation represents?”

It was a similar question asked by Henry George.  George was the author of the book Progress and Poverty, in which he sets out to answer a fundamental question of the Gilded Age: Why are so many people living in poverty while others are getting so rich in an expanding economy?

George writes in Progress and Poverty, “The present century has been marked by a prodigious increase in wealth producing power,” Yet, working people were not sharing in these gains.

We are coming into collision with facts which there can be no mistaking,” George writes.  “From all parts of the civilized world come complaints of industrial depression; of labor condemned to involuntary idleness; of capital massed and wasting; of pecuniary distress among businessmen; of want and suffering and anxiety among the working classes.”

He goes on, “Some get an infinitely better and easier living, but others find it hard to get a living at all.  The ‘tramp’ comes with the locomotives, and almshouses and prisons are as surely the marks of ‘material progress’ as are costly dwellings, rich warehouses and magnificent churches.”

America was split in two.  Not between North and South, but between the Robber Barons and everyone else.

Eventually, the nation learned the lesson that not only is the accumulation of vast amounts of wealth in the hands of an elite aristocracy not good for the working people, it’s also not good for economies as a whole, which is exactly what the game Monopoly should teach us.

But first, it will take a horrific crash.  And that crash is near.  We are simply nearing the end of another round of the game of Monopoly that has already been played out so many times before in this country of ours.

The period from the 1870s through the late 1890s, when the monopolists came out of the Great Crash of 1857 and the Civil War… in which they were still in power, were the longest, deepest, and most brutal Great Depression in American history, which was actually FAR WORSE than what our grandparents, and our mothers and fathers experienced in the 1930s.  And at the same time, the rich got richer in a way that wasn’t seen until *today*.  America in that era more resembled Victorian England than that idealistic, egalitarian society envisioned by our revolutionary Founding Fathers.

The peak of that crisis was the crash of 1893.

A fifth of American workers lost their jobs.  And countless lost their savings, too, as more than 150 national banks failed alongside more than 170 state banks and 177 private banks.  It was the worst economic depression the nation had ever suffered.

What the Robber Barons failed to understand is that by crushing the middle class, they signed their own suicide pact as well.  They destroyed their own consumers--- or their playing partners on the board game of Monopoly.  And when working people hit rock bottom and can no longer afford to buy anything in the economy, then everything shut down.  Everybody was out of business--- including the monopolists.

Eventually, future generations heeded Lizzie Magie’s advice in the game Monopoly.  The Robber Barons were crushed during the Progressive Era of the early 1900s.

It happened again, after the exact same situation redeveloped in 1910s-1920s, when the monopolists roared back again.  As a result of it, then came the stock market crash 1929, and the Great Depression of the 1930s, and then FDR rebuilt the middle class with the New Deal.

But as the cycles would again have it, we have entered another dark period and the Robber Barons (we call them “the corporatists” now) are back.

In closing, if you have the board game of Monopoly in your house, maybe you could get the game out and play it with your kids and grandkids.

And maybe you should tell yourselves, and your kids and grandkids, that yes… it is only a game.  But also ask, what do you think would happen if it wasn’t a game?  Ask, what do you think would happen if it was the real world, with real people?

Roughly, then, what I remember happening whenever we played Monopoly for as long as we could -- the Bank ran out of money, and there literally wasn't enough money in the game to keep playing because of the amount collected by the winning player.  So we literally could not go on. But nobody realized we were supposed to learn something from this.  Pity.  It happened enough times that a suitable explanation could have cured both my parents and my brother of Republicanism.

You're right.  I got laid off so many times I lost count.  You either learn to start a side business or you move to a different industry all together.

In this time of mergers and acquisitions, people are either going to learn to hit the ground running on a lot less money or end up in a homeless shelter.

I don't understand why anyone would get upset at your post.  People in France were used to being guaranteed employment until 55 or so and then guaranteed retirement.  Now those things are going away and they're not dealing with it well.

LOL. The top 1%, or more specifically the top 0.01%, control our economy and are able to influence politicians in a way that none others can. These richest of the rich are the ones who safeguard the debt-backed monetary system, who want companies to be owned and operated by and for extractive shareholders who hold no regard for the people. The "entitlement class", which is much smaller than 49%, is largely a creation of these individuals as a means of staving off revolution.

Air France is a shrinking, money-losing company, and it has been for a long time.  A lot of airlines are making good money right now.  Not AF, though.

Of course they are going to have layoffs, cancel airplane orders, sell profitable assets to focus on unprofitable ones, cut routes, etc.  It's what airlines that are circling the drain do, cf. TWA, Pan Am, Braniff, et al, Pan Am being the exemplar.

Perhaps the French government will give them money extracted from profitable businesses so they can continue to lose money for longer than they otherwise would, but they suck and it's not in them to stop sucking.  Au revoir.
