Russia Escalates Syria Proxy War: Threatens Full Naval Blockade Of Syria

Tyler Durden's picture

Last week, NATO's supreme allied commander for Europe, General Philip Breedlove, suggested that Russia has effectively declared a no-fly zone in Syria.

That contention was supported by Moscow’s rather bold move to effectively instruct the US-led coalition to keep its planes out of the sky starting last Wednesday. Ultimately, The Kremlin has declared a monopoly on Syrian air space for the duration of Russia’s military campaign, marking an epic embarrassment for Washington, and serving notice to the anti-regime forces operating in Syria that there’s a new sheriff in town.

Well, don't look now, but in addition to the de facto no-fly zone, some experts are out suggesting that Russia is set to use its Black Sea fleet to enforce a blockade on the Syrian coast. Here's Sputnik:

Russia's Black Sea Fleet may be used in Syria to blockade the Syrian coastline and deliver armaments, as well as possibly deliver artillery strikes, the head of Russian State Duma's defense committee and former Black Sea Fleet commander Vladimir Komoyedov said.

"Regarding the large-scale use of the Black Sea Fleet in this operation, I don't think it will happen, but in terms of a coastal blockade, I think that it's quite [possible]. The delivery of artillery strikes hasn't been excluded; the ships are ready for this, but there is no point in it for now. The terrorists are in deep, where the artillery cannot reach," Komoyedov said.

Komoyedov added that the size of the naval grouping used in the operation will depend on the intensity of the fighting. He noted that currently, the navy's Mediterranean flotilla is currently sufficient for actions in the given area.

Komoyedov also said that auxiliary vessels will certainly be used in the operation against ISIL to deliver armaments as well as military and technical equipment.

Meanwhile, the aerial bombardment continues unabated as Russian warplanes have reportedly destroyed "a terrorist base in the woods" where tanks - which are ironically Soviet made- were stationed. Here's RT:

The Russian Air Force in Syria has conducted 25 sorties on 9 Islamic State installations in the last 24 hours, eliminating a disguised terrorist base equipped with tanks, a command center and a communication hub, the Defense Ministry reported.

Russian bombers taking off from Khmeimim airbase knocked out a terrorist base hidden in the woods near the city of Idlib, eliminating 30 vehicles, among which were several Soviet-made T-55 tanks.

“Six airstrikes hit the base, and the terrorists’ equipment was fully destroyed,” Konashenkov said.

And here's the video which purportedly shows the attack on the hidden ISIS base:

While according to Russian weatherwomen, mother nature is smiling on The Kremlin's efforts (via The Guardian):

It’s warm and sunny in Syria – and conditions are perfect for flying fighter jets and launching airstrikes, according to a weather report broadcast on Russian state television.

“Russian aerospace forces are continuing their operation in Syria. Experts say the timing for it was chosen very well in terms of weather,” said the forecaster in a segment aired on Rossiya 24 on Sunday, standing in front of a screen showing a Sukhoi Su-27 fighter jet with the words “flying weather”.

For those wondering how long it would be before an "accident" took place, "inadvertently" pitting Russian fighter planes against NATO, we got the answer on Monday as Turkey scrambled F-16s to the border after Russia allegedly violated Ankara's air space. Here's a bit of color from BBC:

Russia said the incident was a "navigational error" and that it has "clarified" the matter to Ankara.

Turkish jets patrolling the border were also "harassed" by an unidentified plane on Sunday, Turkey said.

Turkey, a Nato member, has called the Russian strikes a "grave mistake".

Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu told Turkish TV that the rules of engagement were clear, whoever violates its airspace.

"The Turkish Armed Forces are clearly instructed. Even if it is a flying bird, it will be intercepted," he said.

Only, that's not true, because the first time Ankara shoots down a Russian "flying bird", Erdogan will have a real war on his hands and will swiftly discover that while bombing air force-less Kurdish separatists with impunity is easy, dog fights with Russian fighter pilots are not, and just about the last thing Turkey needs with inflation soaring and the lira tumbling and elections looming is to go to war with Russia.

In any event, the situation is clearly escalating, and as the Russians get more bold with each passing NATO bluff and subsequent fold, the stakes get still higher. As hyperbolic as it may sound, the West is now one Erodgan miscalculation away from open warfare with Russia and Moscow looks to be just days away from enforcing a full naval blockade of what is rapidly becoming a Mid-East Kremlin colony.

Informational Brainwashing in Russia and in the West

----

Those who try to make us form an opinion of our eastern neighbor repeat in all sharps and flats that absolute majority of Russians have only one source of information, which is public broadcasting, the key megaphone of Kremlin propaganda. They claim Russian citizens have no other ways to know what is happening around. But is it really so?

Is there any news here?

At a minimum Russian video shows they have smart bomb capability and want the world to know it.  They are also getting some real world training where NATO pilots have gained much experience (equip/tactics/technology/weapons).  This experience does not include much surface to air or an air to air threat which can make pilots too comfortable tucked safely inside their flying machines.

How is your post news? It is more like theoretical mental masturbation. Russia isn't there for practice or to show off. They are there to do a job that the West has been lying about doing for over a year. Any proper seat time their pilots get in real battle is great, but is secondary.

This last week would have been so hilarious if we hadn't seen so much death and destruction leading up to it. In under a week Russia has done what the West could note ( more like would not ) do in over a year.

Let them drop all the light and medium weapons they want. But.. in the last week ISIS has been dealt a death blow with the loss of multiple command and control centres, as well as many vehicles. I said Russia showed up to shut shit down and frankly I'm shocked at how accurate that has proven.

These fuckers have gotten their asses handed to them on a silver plate, and what's even funnier, is that now whatever "moderate" Syrian opposition there may or may not be ( low IQ idiots paid by the West / Gulf states ) are racing to give up their arms and get amnesty.

http://www.almasdarnews.com/article/over-450-militants-surrender-to-the-...

So the foreign bearded savages are currently sitting ducks, and the citizens are shitting bricks realizing that they either beg for mercy or die. This will ultimately leave the West / Nato, Gulf States, Israel with their stubbed dicks in the wind.

Stopping the flow of arms is much easier said than done when the USSA are selling arms via proxy a la Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, and the United Arab Emirates, and very likley Israel, Jordan, and Turkey.

If you go back and read about the multi-billion dollar arms purchases made by these countries over the past few years it all starts making sense.

It's like the USSA sells weapons to countries who hold them in trust, and in the event that the USSA needs to get involved there via proxy, there is a convenient cache to leverage and supply for that particular countries armed forces, private military contractors, local militia, and rag tag fighters who are conscripted to fight as a "moderate rebel" under threat of death and death of their families to do the bidding of the USSA & Gulf monarchies, and to ensure the continued hegemony of oil and gas resources and their distribution to markets.

To that end, the USSA military industrial congressional complex are kicking back and enjoying the show.

Here from Russia Insider

A source in military circles of the American military in Turkey reported that NATO aircraft, trying to get close to the forces of the Russian Federation, has been identified by radar, and the source of the radar could not even be traced.

“The Russians have indicated that they can see everything, and getting closer is not worth it, otherwise it will be shot down”, - said the American military.

“Frankly we were surprised by the air defense system of Russia, most likely there are the latest systems S-400. I have no other ideas,” - said Colonel Jack Jacobs.

This is a great opportunity for Russia's military to do what the US military has been doing for decades:  An all out testing of their weapons systems and military organization in wartime conditions.  The HW, the organization and skills.  A real fight with minor players prepares you for a big fight a lot better than shadow-boxing does.

Not to mention the PR value of its weapons and tech to its own MIC, in sales of these things to other countries.  Market share must be protected where the big money is (outside of banking): energy and arms -- the two inseparable twins in the modern era.  Especially when dealing with those, who would use the USD as "The One Ring To Rule Them All".

You touch on the key difference in foreign policy: America's is essentially hijacked by the mafia-like corporate interests of the "Anglo-American" banking and military industrial complex, the priority of which is to foster and perpetuate destabilization, justifying long term "interventionism" (occupation) for maximum long term cash flow and control of commerce in the authorized debt-based currency. This is the reason why proxy agents like Al Qaeda and ISIL are created, undermining international law and eliminating accountability. Russia, on the other hand, is seen in this situation to be defending a comparatively moralistic model for international affairs, such that instability and terrorist proxies are pathogens to be eliminated. The views are polarized and irreconcilable. If you sponsor a terrorist, you are a terrorist.

The "Anglo American" model is temporary and bound to fail, because it is dominated ultimately by control freaks, clinical psychopaths whose nature is to seek power. They overreach, diverting so much wealth away from the real economy that it finally collapses. As awareness grows among subject populations, there is a possibility that the outcome of this latest cycle could be unique in that the psychopaths behind the curtain are known, pre-empting some of the usual smokescreen and scapegoating employed toward the end of previous cycles.

it is not just internet in Russia, you may be surprised but there are only few state media in Russia and great many pro-Western media. Russians would tell you that most of their media is "anti-Russian" and "anti-Putin" (and paid from abroad). And even CNN freely broadcasts in Russia. Still surprised? How little Westerners know about Russia. And the irony of this. All these pro-Western media have been attacking Putin for all those years and throwing dirt on him, but Russians haven't budged.

There have also been cases, where these same pro-Western media tried to provoke panic in Russia, like when pro-Western TV channels incited panic over the falling ruble. And the Russians still didn't budge and no run on the banks happened. Russians are stubborn as hell. So many attempts for a color revolution in Russia. So many pro-Western media there. So many foreign NGOs and agitators. Yet, nothing has worked with the Russians. One of the Western-sponsored activists recently even said that: "We have lost hope for any kind of pro-democratic revolution in Russia. There is something wrong with them (Russians). I am now sure that it is hopeless. The problem is not in Putin himself. After this Putin, there will be another Putin. The level of agressiveness and stuborness of this population, which makes Putin Putin, has not been decreasing and I don't think they will ever change."

This is because the West do not understand Russians at all. As Larry King said: "I have often heard Russians complaining that: If you (Americans) look at the Chinese, you know that they are different then you. If you look at us, you think we are the same as you. But we are not. And why should we even try to be like you?? We are just happy being ourselves."

And was this activist a Russian?
If he or she was then it is surprising the lack of understanding of his/her own people.
If it was a foreigner then the Russians should find this person and put a bullet in the head.
No one should be screwing around with another country like that. I would certainly expect that done to anyone trying to distabilize the US.

This activist was a Russian citizen. But he was also Jewish. There, I said it:-) Now he is already living in Israel, because he "does not want to spend his life dealing with this Russian nonsense." There are many more like him. I wonder if they will be so happy in Israel, but I have no doubt that Russians will be much happier without them! Western newspapers wrote about this with titles like: Jews Again Leaving Russia Because ‘After Putin, There Will Be Another Putin’

Exactly correct. People don't understand Russian history so they are clueless as to why the Russian people behave as they do. The bottom line is Russia is a very hostile land rich in natural resources in a very hostile climate. As such they have been invaded by many outside factions throughout history. These facts have produced a very hearty and tough people that only respect and support strong leaders. This not only was true in the case of the Tzars, but also going all the way back to the influence of the Tartar Mongols that ruled Russian territory for decades. USSA people are completely ignorant about history and how it forms the basis for why people behave as they do today.

The girl transferred me to the officer on duty, who very politely explained: "Even before the military operation in Syria, the General staff of the Defense Ministry made a responsible decision. The essence of this solution lies in our traditional Russian desire to adhere strictly to the principles of legality and justice. So now, all of our munitions are divided into two categories: regular and moderate. Against ordinary terrorists, we use only conventional munitions. Against moderate terrorists, we use solely moderate ammunition. So don't worry, we take into account the moderation of some of the terrorists and treat them with justice."

After these words, I felt relieved. But I still asked: "Do you really use exclusively moderate ammo against moderate terrorists, is this true?!"

The source said: "Word of honor!".

I felt much better. To clarify, I asked: "Tell me, how your conventional munitions differ from the moderate?"

"Our conventional munitions differ from moderate exactly the same as regular terrorists in Syria are different from the moderate terrorists: they are painted with different paint, in a lighter and more moderate tones," - said the officer and hung up.

I agree with you that that is what this article says but 12-15 hours ago, there was a report that the Russian Ambassador had been summoned and that Turkey had made a formal complaint and would refer the matter to NATO.  I don't remember exactly which feed it came from and I can't find it now - but I do remember that is what it said.  Looks like a decision has been taken to remove some steam from the situation, which is a good idea.

Thanks for that.  Most of the reports are now largely ad idem (with a bit of variation) but the report I read earlier portrayed a far more beligerant Turkey - maybe it was just bad reporting.  Frankly, if Turkey accepts it was a mistake and did not feel it necessary to make an official report to NATO, then why is NATO involved at all over this incident?  There are also headlines such as: "NATO says Russia should not target Syria opposition."  Since Russia has been requested to become involved by Syria, you really have to ask WTF business is it of NATO what Russia/Syria decide to target within Syria?

I have not been there but believe it is narrow enough that it can be effectively blockaded from shore.  It is an ace that Turkey has and while Russia will have thought of how to react it would get messy.  Something like that could cause Russia to make a commitment to real war in the region, not just some bomb on insurgents.  By commitment I mean willingness to exchange some test fire with NATO.  Now is the time for Turkey to reapply for NATO membership if that is what they still want.  NATO might let them in now just to fortify the passage.  Which might get things going as well.

Mon, 10/05/2015 - 11:37 | 6631071 NubianSundance

I would expect them to clear fortifications around said narrow areas before attempting to pass through!

So would I.  But do they need fortifications?  Mobile units should be sufficient to cover the distance.  It seems to have the potential to be a tricky situation.  The leadership of Turkey is interested in their own bank accounts and power first, so Russia may simply keep them happy (or be clear how unhappy they could become).

Another poster also showed that my commet about NATO is incorrect.  Turkey is in NATO, I thought they got rejected.  So this can get interesting if any shots are fired.  Will Turkey get brave in the south by using their NATO membership to play chicken with Russia?

Turkey was a member of NATO even before 1962 as the USSA had Nukes stationed there. (That was what we removed in response to the Soviet removal of the Nukes from Cuba during the Cuban Missile Crisis.

Yes this will get interesting. If Russia nails any NATO member, even by accident, then it can escalate into a Thermonuclear Holocaust quite rapidly.
