A Useful Prep-Sheet On Syria For Media Propagandists

Here are some State Department talking points on Syria for cable news anchors:

1) Keep mentioning the barrel bombs.

Do not mention how their use was pioneered by the Israeli Air Force in 1948, and how they were used by the US Air Force in Vietnam in Operation Inferno in 1968. Keep repeating, “barrel bombs, barrel bombs” and stating with a straight face that the Syrian regime is using them “against its own people.” Against its own people. Against its own people. Against its own people.

2) Keep mentioning “200,000.”

(The UN estimates that 220,000 have been killed in the conflict since 2011.) Declare like you really believe it that this is the number of civilians the Syrian government of Bashar Assad has killed during the war. (Do not be concerned about any need to back the figure up. No one is ever going to call you on it publicly.)

Do NOT mention that around half of the war dead (estimates range from 84,000 to 133,000) are Syrian government forces waging war against an overwhelmingly Islamist opposition, and an additional 73,000 to 114,000 are anti-government combatants.

Do not discuss these figures because they would call into question the claim that the Syrian government is targeting and killing tens of thousands of civilians willy-nilly. (If feeling any qualms of conscience, recall Karl Rove’s immortal dictum that “We’re an empire now, and when we act, we create our own reality.”)

3) Keep mentioning the “Arab Spring” and how in 2011 Syrians peacefully mobilized to challenge the regime were violently repressed.

But don’t dwell on the Arab Spring too much. Realize that the State Department was actually shocked by it, particularly by its repercussions in Egypt, where democratization brought the Muslim Brotherhood to power before the US-backed military drowned its opponents in blood.

And recall but do NOT mention how in Bahrain, peaceful demonstrations by the majority Shiites against the repressive Sunni monarchy were crushed by a Saudi-led invasion force tacitly supported by the US. And NEVER mention that the bulk of the peaceful protesters in the Syrian Arab Spring want nothing to do with the US-supported armed opposition but are instead receptive to calls from Damascus, Moscow, and Tehran for dialogue towards a power-sharing arrangement.

Do NOT explain that the pro-democracy student activists and their allies fear most is the radical Islamists who have burgeoned in large part due to foreign intervention since 2011.

4) Keep mentioning the “Free Syrian Army” and the “moderate opposition” to give the impression that they actually exist in the real world.

Do NOT point out that the FSA organization is actually a joke; that its leaders live in Turkey; that its remaining units are headed by CIA officers; that US efforts to train over 5,000 FSA troops have been an utter failure; that the tiny group of 54 recently sent to the front were immediately captured by the al-Nusra Front and another 70 dispatched from Turkey immediately turned over their arms to that al-Qaeda-linked group; that their chief of staff has resigned protesting US incompetence; that Gen. Lloyd J. Austin III, the top American commander in the Middle East, told Congress last month that only “four or five” Syrians had been trained by the US to fight ISIL; and that the US-trained forces have been accused of multiple human rights abuses.

Do NOT mention these things. They are so totally embarrassing that the State Department officials responsible just want to curl up into a ball and roll into a corner. Your mission is to put a bright face on this and continue to pretend there’s something in Syria, supported by the US, that falls between the terrorists and the Assad regime.

5) Keep expressing consternation if not outrage that Russia is “interfering” in Syria. Scrunch up your face and act like you think it’s puzzling.

Do NOT mention that Syria is much closer to Russia than to the US and that Russia faces a much greater threat of Islamist terror than the US (in places like Chechnya and Dagestan that your viewers can’t locate on a map).

Downplay the fact that Russia has had a military relationship with Syria since the 1950s no more nor less legitimate that the US military relationship with Saudi Arabia. (And avoid any objective comparisons of the human rights records of Saudi Arabia and Syria since the former’s is manifestly so much worse than the latter’s!)

Do NOT imply any moral equivalence between Russia’s desire to prevent US-backed regime change in Syria and the US’s desire to inflict another Iraq or Libya-type regime change on that tragically war-torn country.

6) Keep treating the Assad regime as an obvious pariah, whose leader has “lost legitimacy.”

Say that with an air of authority, like you really believe that US presidents—like Chinese emperors of the past or medieval popes— enjoy so much “legitimacy” that they can confer this on, or remove it from, anybody else.

Study CNN anchor Chris Cuomo’s facial expressions and body language when he announces—so matter-of-factly, as a self-evident fact, as a done deal—that (come on, everybody!) “Assad hast lost legitimacy.”

undefined

(Chris is your model. He’s the State Department’s pleasantly vapid headed scion-of-privilege poster boy, whose occasional dark flashes of indignation—especially those directed towards anyone questioning the official talking points on Russia—embody the attitude Foggy Bottom seeks to encourage in the corporate press.)

Do NOT remind viewers that the Syrian government is internationally recognized, holds a UN seat, retains cordial relations with most nations, and is engaged in a life-and-death struggle against people who enslave, crucify, behead, bury alive, and burn alive people and want to replace Syria’s modern secular government with a medieval religious one intolerant of any diversity.

7) Keep insisting that the Assad regime somehow is responsible for, and even in league with, the al-Qaeda-linked al-Nusra Front and ISIL.

Since this makes no logical sense, just have faith in the ignorance of the viewership and its disinclination to distinguish one Arab from another and to assume that they’re all linked in ways that aren’t worth even trying to sort out. Imply that by staying in power (and not complying with Obama’s demand that he step down) Assad has actually invited the presence of radical Islamists to his country, or provoked their emergence.

Do NOT mention that al-Qaeda offshoots have proliferated globally since the US invaded and wrecked Iraq in 2003, in a war based entirely on lies, and that there was no al-Nusra Front or ISIL until the US set out to effect regime change throughout the Middle East. Do NOT let on that State Department PR strategy is precisely to obfuscate the real causal relationship, and to impute to the beleaguered Assad phenomena actually generated by US aggression in the region.

8) Keep treating Russian President Vladimir Putin as America’s Enemy Number One, an ally of a Syrian government that US has said must go, deploying force in Syria to bolster Assad rather than (as Moscow claims) to target ISIL.

Do NOT lend any credence to the Russian assertion that the Syrian Army is the force best placed to defeat ISIL. Do NOT point out the incongruity of the US invading and attacking countries from Pakistan to Libya since 2001 while expressing alarm that Moscow is (after much hesitation) taking action against Islamist terrorists at Damascus’s invitation.

9) Do not harp on the past, revisit history, or attempt to place the contemporary situation in Syria in perspective. Do NOT complicate the storyline by mentioning Damascus’s cooperation in the “War on Terror” and the US use of Syrian torture chambers in its “special renditions” program after 2001. Do NOT mention Syria’s large Christian minority or its historical support for Assad’s Baath party, which was co-founded by a Syrian Christian.

*  *  *

Please keep everything simple, following the examples set by MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” Scarborough and CNN’s Cuomo, and inculcate in the mind of the viewer that Assad is the main problem and most horrible actor in the Syrian situation. Tell them that Putin, while striving to revive the tsarist empire, is backing Assad as a loyal ally and using his military to prolong his rule that Washington condemns rather than (as he states) taking action against ISIL.

If you do all this, you will demonstrate your loyalty to the State Department, the bipartisan foreign policy consensus, the military-industrial complex, the One Percent, your advertisers, your producers and editors, and the unsung heroes behind the scenes who arrange your teleprompter scripts.

You too could be an Andrea Mitchell, or Christiane Amanpour, posturing as an “expert” while trotting out our talking points. And even after they’re exposed as bullshit, you won’t have to say you’re sorry. People will soon forget anyway.

Those unconscionable barrel bombs! 200,000 civilians killed by the illegitimate regime! US support for the moderate opposition! Russia up to no good, supporting Assad and not really targeting ISI!. Russian moves “worrisome” (whereas US moves are not.)

Oh, come on, CNN has carried every administration's NWO, MIC, Central Bank, etc., objectives since I can remember.  Christiane simply does it with some panache and style.
CNN is a pure propaganda factory.  Hell, they even turned the Oregon shooter into a white boy.  To wit:

That, my friends, is Overt Propaganda/Perceptions Manipulation .... and don't call it anything less.

They dumbed-down the citizenry over a period of decades for a reason.  So most people would believe this horseshit.

To most ZH'ers this sort of stuff seems laughable transparent.  Almost childish.  But it wasn't deisnged to work on the few who still seek facts and apply logic.  It was designed to work on the much larger number of already-indoctrinated.  And they don't believe it just because it sounds true to them.  They believe it because they know they damned well better believe it- or else.

The great game of Empire - apart from the mayhem it inflicts on its obvious victims - may also be seen as a crime against its own posterity, for, in due time, the piper will be paid in full and in blood too. Some unlucky last generation that had no part in the glory will pay for the sins of their fathers.

It's always the same.

They plunder, they slaughter, and they steal: this they falsely name Empire, and where they make a wasteland, they call it peace. ~Roman Historian Tacitus (c. AD 56 – after 117)

BTW, the democratically elected government turned down the Euro debt-money system... and were overthrown a few months later and then put under the debt-money euro.

Don't mention that.

The most telling aspect of the state of our corrupted press is the fact that on the day of the first Russian airstrikes all of the mainstream press was unanimously against them. There wasn't one dissenting viewpoint offered on the legitimacy of Russian airstrikes. Fox, CNN and Msnbc all condemed them. Keeping in mind that on social issues, the "three G's", the major networks have differing views. They repeatedly brought out the tried and true term of "destabilising". When it comes to state power and violence they are 100% united.

A "Barrel Bomb" ? That's a kind of home made, DIY bomb that those that cannot afford proper bombs use right ? Surely cannot be anywhere near as damaging as the real thing ? “If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State.”

let's look at some examples just a couple of months after the biggest collapse in decades in the stock market and the economy, we were able to magically announce the "recession" was over. Now that wasn't a lie was it? Further more we only had about 11% official unemployment at that very moment. That wasn't the U6 official number which was 18%. Let's not even look at the actual unemployment number based on historical metrics........but the recession was over and we were in a RECOVERY.

Now Trillions and Trillions of digital money later we're still in a "RECOVERY". With over 94 working age Amerikans not even looking for work anymore and NOT even counted in the 5.1% unemployment number reported to the masses. It's a RECOVERY. Lets not even talk about the 50 Zillion Amerikans on Food Stamps er EBT cards. We're in a RECOVERY!

Don't look at the dozen major CONflicts raging around the globe right now. Just look at Putin INVADING Syria. He's a monster. He's a monster. He's a monster. We didn't train ISIS. We didn't demand the regime change in Syria 3 years ago. We didn't threaten Iran with an invasion. We don't support the Saudi invasion of Yemen. WE ARE THE GOOD GUYS.

Don't look for the dollar hegemony to change tomorrow but rest assured it will continue to come under pressure and people are growing sick of our BIG LIES. Will they get a critical mass to stop it? Maybe. Maybe something else will stop it. But it will stop. Enjoy the BIG LIE

But, after much contemplation, I have come to the conclusion that members of the MSM need to go. Their job is to use the 1st amendment to hold those in power accountable. They have decided instead to sell their souls and betray their duty to keep people informed. It is by their treachery  that TPTB can get away with their bullshit, and for this reason they must be the first to go.

Don't forget that Putin is a war criminal even as the Nobel Prize Winner bombs seven Muslim countries and drones women and children and wedding parties and bombs hospitals:

Putin is a demented "mass-murderer" per the Western free and fair press

Since the beginning of the week, the three most influential mass circulation newsmagazines of the United States, Britain, and Germany—Time, The Economist, and Der Spiegel—have published cover stories that combine wild accusations against Vladimir Putin with demands for a showdown with Russia.

The most striking and obvious characteristic of these cover stories is that they are virtually identical. The CIA has scripted them all. The stories employ the same insults and the same fabrications. They denounce Putin’s “web of lies.” The Russian president is portrayed as a “depraved” mass murderer.

Amanpour is married to Rubin, Albright's sidekick when she made the bombing of Yugoslavia over Kosovo possible. Yugoslavia was made an offer they could not accept (the total occupation of YU by NATO). Even Kissinger said that that 'offer' was a disgrace. Back in those days (1999) the BBC shouted "100,000 Albanian men missing, presumably executed". CNN followed a few days later lifting the figure to 250,000. Not even Hitler had such an efficient killing machine. Amanpour's carreer took off in Bosnia during the war there, very one-sidedly reporting on the war. Even with the 2015 Srebrenica commemoration she twisted the facts in her article for CNN saying that a 250,000 people died during that war. No, in total 105,000 people died: 30,000 Serbs, 60,000 muslems and 15,000 Croats. A muslem scholar established that fact. She also implied that Milosevic was behind all that. She forgot about Tudjman and Izetbegovic and the US giving the latter permission to declare unilateral independence, against YU constitution and international law. Everybody knew that that would let Bosnia explode.

Fantastic synopsis of what actually happened in Yugoslavia. Yugoslavia was a modern day laboratory to perfect the use of illegal intervention combined with propaganda and served as a model for subsequent interventions by NATO. The problem for that plan has become the critical mass of internet media and users who have access to the truth. The MSM & MIC have been exposed for what they really are.

You are prefectly right. YU was a testing ground to see how far they could go. The model there -and that has been repeated- is to demonize one side, emphasize their war crimes and ignore the ones committed against them. Rinse and repeat. The media played an important role in that. Reporters were either on their payrole or saw the war as an opportunity to launch their carreers. In the case of Amanpour I suspect both. She and Co were initially stationed near the airport of Sarajevo. But that used to be Serb territory (in total 80,000 Serbs were ethnically cleansed from the city, along with 30,000 Croats). Then they moved them to the Holiday Inn in the center. And they reported only on crimes committed by the Serbs. Up to a point where crimes against Serbs were presented as Serbian war crimes.

I am not belittling the crimes Serbs committed. They committed the most but crimes were also committed against them. The breakup of YU is a long and complicated process that the press wanted to present as a one sided campaign of the Serbs to cleanse the whole area. The truth is that Serbs had most of their people cleansed from places like Croatia, Bosnia and Kosovo. Serbs had most to lose and in the end they lost it all. The press and the 'victims' in this tragedy want to put the blame solely on the Serbs. International players like Germany for example however had already since the early 70s been busy with breaking up the place. YU might have been a socialist utopia but it functioned for a while. While their economy eventually became inefficient and corrupt the people enjoyed more freedoms that in other socialists countries. But after the fall of the Berlin wall, YU lost its strategic importance as a buffer for the West to the Warsaw pact and it was decided that 'it had to go'. Result: a bloody civil war with 100,00 dead. Hundreds of thousands displaced people and relations between the resulting countries that are bad until today. Bosnia is politically a disaster and it will take another 30 years before it will get anywhere. But the caravan moved on so who cares?

One thing I see in your comment and which I noticed being introduced at that time in the propaganda is opposing nationality (ethnic group) - Serbs in our case - against religious belief - Muslim, thus omitting conveniently the fact that under the common name 'Muslims' there were many different nationalities, even mujahedeens as far as from Afghanistan. Not to speak that on the Balkans many Muslims are in fact descendants by blood of Christians forcibly converted to Islam.

For me it was the first time I saw US propaganda using Islam as a common denominator for the proxies they use against a nation.

Mon, 10/05/2015 - 21:27 | 6633683 Joe A
Joe A's picture

That's right. Ethnic groups were pitched against eachother and against religious groups. Muslims in Bosnia nowadays are called Bosniaks, a term that nobody used before the war. The thing is, Serbs, Croats and Bosniaks are ethically the same people. Next to them there are around ten other ethnicities in BiH. And then there was the influx of foreign fighters from places like Afghanistan. They were naturalised into Bosnians. The interesting thing is that the average Muslim in BiH does not care about religion. They eat pork meat and drink rakija.

When it came to the dissolvement of Yugoslavia the question is that time was "why should I be a minority in your country if you can be a minority in my country?".

When it comes to Israels northeastern neighbor Syria, the US government does exactly what the Israeli government and American Jews tell it to do. After all the US government is bought and paid for by the same. Particularly Hillary and the self proclaimed Zionist Joe Biden.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Israel–Syria relations

Israel–Syria relations refers to diplomatic and economic relations between Israel and Syria. Diplomatic ties have not been established since the creation of both countries in the mid-20th century and the countries have fought three major wars Which are the 1948 Arab Israeli War in 1948,the Six Day War in 1967,the Yom Kippur War in 1973, later also being both involved in the Lebanese Civil War and the 1982 Lebanon War. Both countries do allow a limited trade of apples for the Golan Druze villages, located on both sides of the 1973 ceasefire line. Israel also has allowed academic studies of Golan Druze from the Israeli-controlled side in Damascus universities, though the procedure has greatly reduced as a result of Syrian civil war.

Informational Brainwashing in Russia and in the West

Those who try to make us form an opinion of our eastern neighbor repeat in all sharps and flats that absolute majority of Russians have only one source of information, which is public broadcasting, the key megaphone of Kremlin propaganda. They claim Russian citizens have no other ways to know what is happening around. But is it really so?  During recent decades the Internet has become a recognized alternative to the official media. In contrast to newspapers, radio and TV channels it is extremely difficult to control the World Wide Web, at least, beyond the borders of national segment.

The start of the 'Syrian revolution' in 2011 did not involve a mass uprising of ordinary Syrian people. There were small anti-government demonstrations and very big pro-government rallies. Then there were violent attacks on demonstrators, Syrian police and government buildings by well-equipped groups that were trained and armed by Western military and intelligence forces, exactly like Maidan in Ukraine.

Oh, btw, in 2006 Syria switched all of Syria's foreign currency transactions to euros from dollars.

Whelp, that about covers it!

I could not have said it better myself.  The reason for the US position of supporting Jihadists against Assad hovers somewhere between Incompetence and Corruption.

The machinations that put Sen. John McCain and the Republicans on the same side as Obama which is on the same side as the ISIS-Jihadist/TURKEY/SAUDI terrorist coalition have yet to be fully revealed.

And who is the unsaid victim of this Jihadist coalition?  Every citizen of the EU who is now faced with a 5th Column of Islamist insurgents posing as refugees.

And who is the clear unsaid beneficiary? The Mainstream Media has planted a bonanza of exciting pain and suffering all throughout Europe. Editors at the NY Times are likely fist-pumping themselves as we speak.

It is just a matter of months now before the media tells us to be "Shocked...SHOCKED!" that buildings and towns become occupied facilities by armed Islamist groups holding EU hostages Beslan-Style and the massive rise in rapes and assaults and butchery make Charlie Hebdo look like a school luncheon and the Tunisia massacre of British tourists look like a relaxing stroll on the beach.

Likely, Russia will be asked to help the feckless EU metro-sexuals climb back out of this ruin they have set in motion.

https://theintercept.com/2015/10/03/one-day-after-warning-russia-of-civi...

(updated below – Update II – Update III – Update IV – Update V)

Yesterday afternoon, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Samantha Power marched to Twitter to proclaim: “We call on Russia to immediately cease attacks on Syrian oppo[sition and] civilians.” Along with that decree, she posted a statement from the U.S. and several of its closest authoritarian allies — including Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the U.K. — warning Russia that civilian casualties “will only fuel more extremism and radicalization.”

Early this morning, in the Afghan city of Kunduz, the U.S. dropped bombs on a hospital run by Doctors Without Borders (Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF)). The airstrike killed at least nine of the hospital’s medical staff, and seriously injured dozens of patients. “Among the dead was the Afghan head of the hospital, Abdul Sattar,” reported the New York Times.

Jason Cone, MSF’s executive director, said the medical charity “condemns in the strongest possible terms the horrific bombing of its hospital in Kunduz full of staff and patients.” He added that “all parties [to the] conflict, including in Kabul & Washington, were clearly informed of precise GPS Coordinates of MSF facilities in Kunduz,” and that the “precise location of MSF Kunduz hospital [was] communicated to all parties on multiple occasions over past months, including on 9/29.” Worst of all, from MSF itself:
