This Is How Close US And Russian Jets Are To A Dog Fight Above Syria

Tyler Durden's picture

With Russia now effectively controlling the skies over Syria and with the US chiding Moscow for “targeting” America’s CIA-trained proxy armies, everyone is anxious to know how long it will be before NATO’s F-16s have an actual, live fire run-in with Russian Su-34s.

As we noted on Monday, the biggest threat here is the close proximity at which everyone is now operating: "What happens next? Well, with the previously discussed Russian naval blockade of Syria as a likely next step, and with both US and Russian warplanes already flying back and forth above Syria, and now both superpowers having a legitimate, if only in the eyes of their own media, justification to dispatch land troops, what was until now a mere proxy war is about to become full blown land combat on Syrian soil, one which will soon involve both Russian and US ground, sea and airborne forces."

How close to this eventuality are we, you ask? Well, to let CBS tell it, about 20 miles:

U.S. pilots flying F-16s out of Turkey first picked up the Russian planes on radar. The Russians closed to within 20 miles, at which point the American pilots could visually identify them on their targeting cameras.

Lt. Gen. Charles Brown, commander of the American air campaign, said the Russians have come even closer than that to his unmanned drones.

"The closest has been within a handful of miles of our remotely piloted aircraft," said Brown. "But to our manned aircraft they've not been closer than about 20 miles."

Brown said he intends to simply work around the Russians in Syria, and he doesn't think they will crowd out American operations.

"We're up a lot more often than [the Russians] are so when we do have to move around [them] for safe operation, it's for a small period of time compared to the hours and hours that we're airborne over Iraq and Syria," said Brown.

A radar map lays this out best: the yellow aircraft are Russian, the green are American.

Go ahead and start the countdown to an "accident", false-flagged or otherwise.

Idiots who sit in Washington put Russia have the choice of:
- Or the world in which there is no longer international law?!
- Or the world in which the United States no longer exists?!

The first option is the slow death of Russia. In Moscow, it is well understood.
What do you think, which of these two options already chosen Russia if Washington does not give Russia any other choice?

Remind me again why it is that American war planes are able to penetrate a soverign country's airspace and then proceed to drop bombs on said soverign country.  It just smacks of hypocracy when the USSA defends Ukraine or Isreal or Saudi Arabia to bomb the shit out of helpless civilians all in the name of fighting the boogy man.

The only foreign country with a legal basis for being in Syria is Russia. Forget the bullshit narrative you hear from the MSM. America is only there to overthrow the existing government so the Nabucco Pipeline can be built. Civilians (women and children included) have been dying by the hundreds of thousands in Syria for years while the US continued to support the proxy armies that contributed to the instability. None of these so-called moderates you hear about in the MSM are Syrians. They are all foreign (terrorist) mercenaries funded and armed by the CIA to overthrow Assad. Fuck these terrorist maggots. Hope Russian forces kill all of them!!

Well Mike, you're partially correct.  And no, I didn't down-vote you.

What you get wrong is your assessment of the reason for us being in Syria.  Since Obama took office, TPTB (Soros and Valerie Jarrett), wanted to rid Syria of Assad.  The purpose was to expand the territory to be controlled by ISIS vis a vis the Islamic Caliphate.  With Assad gone, ISIS would be able to control a much bigger land mass under their new Caliphate.

This is NOT about a pipeline.  This is about ISLAM.  Plain and simple.

Anyone doubting that Obama is a Muslim should get their head examined.  The proof is plain as day.

Tue, 10/06/2015 - 10:34 | 6635323 swmnguy
swmnguy's picture

I did down-vote you.

It's not about Valerie Jarrett, George Soros, or Islam.  It is about the pipeline, but it's about far more than that.  It's a whole basket of objectives, which can be collectively called "Wars of Empire."

Get out the atlas.  Syria is in a very strategic position.  So, for that matter, are Iraq and Afghanistan.  Control of each controls huge amounts of water, petroleum, and pipeline routes.  Each are in strategic locations along the perimeter of the potential rivals to the US for domination of Eurasia; Russia, China, and the E.U.  While you've got the atlas open, look at Libya, South Sudan and Somalia; Yemen, Nigeria, Ukraine and Pakistan as well.  All of these are nations in which the US has been fooling around militarily, overtly or covertly.  Each has seen a "homegrown" Sunni extremist "terrorist"  outbreak of truly deplorable viciousness.  Each sits on top of energy deposits, or the route such deposits have to cross to get to market.

Now, scan briefly Zbigniew Brzezinski's "The Grand Chessboard."  The key objective of dominating Eurasia is laid out.  It's not new; Brzezinski goes all the way back to ancient times to justify it.

Zbigniew  Brzezinski is not some old fart nobody listens to.  Between him, Henry Kissinger and Paul Wolfowitz, all of whom are connected, you've got control of the past 55 years of US foreign policy.

This is the US trying to ignite a series of dumpster fires around the perimeter of Russia, China and the E.U.  This puts resource deposits "on ice," untapped until desired, later.  It puts control over the flow of energy to China and the E.U. firmly in US hands.  It destroys the civil societies around those three rivals, forcing them to exhaust their energies just trying to keep some kind of order.  It puts huge refugee populations on the move, further degrading our rivals' energies.  It enriches our MIC.

The genius of the plan is that apparent visible failure is actually success.  Chaos is the objective, not a resolved conflict and rebuilding.  If there is any rebuilding, money flows from the US Treasury to the puppet client government, back to US interests (at a high rate of interest to the puppet proxies), and nothing much gets done.  This is why the US military uses half-measures, slaughters more civilians than "enemies," arms and funds our "enemies," and can't show any videos of destroying "enemy" command and supply facilities.  The point is not victory, but intractable chaos, eventually drawing in our rivals.

It's Brzezinski's 1970's policy in Afghanistan all over again, which succeeded in drawing in the Soviets, who couldn't abide 9th century Islamic extremist primitivist bullshit on their southern doorstep.  The legitimate government of Aghanistan invited the Soviets in then, too, to fight against US-funded, armed and supported Sunni extremist fighting terrorists.

The possible difference this time is that there are more players involved.  Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Iran, the Gulf Despotisms and Israel all have their fingers in this pie.  Syria isn't the same place as Afghanistan.  Russia can just come in and have total air superiority and blow the crap out of anything that moves.  If the US, Saudi Arabia or the Gulf states directly supply ISIS, it's going to be obvious.  That's why we have to have these charades of ISIS "over-running" Iraqi supply depots.  Now that Iraq has invited in Iran and Russia, that supply channel has been blocked.

This is an old game.  It's not Soros and Jarrett.  It's not even them plus Hillary, Kerry, Nuland and the rest  of the neo-cons, Brzezinski, Kissinger et. al.; this one goes back before Alexander the Great, who is the first guy we know of to have tried to invade Afghanistan and realized too late it was a bad idea.

And Israel can annex South Lebanon to the sweet waters of the Litani.  Three times they have tried and three times they have been rebuffed by Hezbollah.  Who supports Hezbollah?  Syria and Iran.

Water is Israel's #1 National Security Problem.  They are in a drought, the Jordon is down to a trickle, the aquafier is sucking salt, and the Dead Sea is down about a meter a year indicating the ground water levels.

Since He-Man Netanyahoo screwed up the deal with Turkey for a pipe line to supply water, Ole He-Man had to make sure to take out Syria, then Iran.  His speech to the UN was sheer desperation.  But boy, did the Wolfowitz boys jump all over it.  The NeoCultists stink tanks and the WaPo and NYT were faithful also.

Now, with the Russians in Syria and the West making deals with Iran, Israel had best play pretty with the largest nation on earth with the most fresh water.  But, I expect Netanyahoo to screw that up too.

I would really like to see the Russians and the Americans get ito a dog fight. That would be good entertainment. Seriously.

The pilot psychology will come into play. Like when you walk out of a bar and a guy bumps into you. Either you shrug it off and go home - no harm no foul - or you have a chip on your shoulder and you immediately go into fighting mode.

The US pilots are basically the air force for ISIS in Syria. I would imagine they don't want to get into a dogfight to protect that turf.  The Russians are in it to win it because if they lose in Syria they will get flushed out of the middle east including all of Lukoil's investments in Iraq. Also, I must beleive that hte Russians brought some SAMs with them.

So it would seem like the US Pilots will give them a wide berth. However, NATO is like that bitch girlfriend who gets you into fights, "My boyfriend is going to kick your ass," she says to the 6'3" bouncer who is sporting a pair of lead-weighted fighting gloves.

If I were an American pilot I would fucking defect to the Russians!

Ya.. that's exactly how it is... The fighter pilot is reduced to a guy getting bumped after coming out of a bar.

As if that isn't enough... You go on to say the pilot should defect.

I suspect, based on your bar ANALogy, you'd be going home with the guy who bumped into you... And soon after your ace gets dogfought, you'll be sucking your own crap off his schlong by dawn.

"Thee pilot psychology will come in to play like when you walk out of a gay bar and this random guy is attached to your poopshute"

Ya, that's exactly how the pilot thinks, maroon.

Most likely there would be a heavy burst from Russian SIGINT/radar jamming prior to fireing on NATO aircraft...assuming they shoot first. The real kicker would be Turkey secretly cutting a deal with Russia and 'accidentally' shoot down a US aircraft.

I just do not see an accident. First, it would imply that the planes are carrying air-to-air missiles. Why? Second, that the pilots are going for intentional missile lock. Third, every plane has enough radar and air traffic controllers that they know where every nearby plane is. Fourth, there are not hundreds of planes flying - only a few dozen at most. Any interaction is not an accident.

The US is looking for an excuse to have a quick "hit" war. The flight of Russian aircraft in the vicinity of the Turkish border could be considered an attack on NATO, which would trigger a massive but short air war.

NATO forces in the vicinity outnumber the Russian air force in Syria by 3-, possibly 4-, to 1.

It could start and end in less than 2 hours.

The Russians should impose on itself -without saying so- a no-fly zone of about 20 kilometers along the Turkish border, which would give the US-sponsored rebels plenty of safe haven.

Those "men and women in uniform" volunteered for it.  That these are killing fields and not wars, that the killing is justified using fake accusations has been clear from the beginning.  But it is decent pay and benefits with limited risk unless you have a conscious.  Now, if Russia might be shooting back, then you might see fewer heros volunteering to kill for money.

On Friday, 2 October, Saudi news published an interview with former U.S. Colonel Jack Jacobs, who announced that the United States can't stop the Russians in Syria, as Russia has established a "closed zone" over it. This means that any military aircraft entering the zone of hostilities can be immediately shot down as a threat to the Russian Air and space forces.

American sources claim that the Russian Federation, with the assistance of deployed land-based air defense systems, has established a closed zone over the entire airspace of Syria, while in addition, the approaches to the Russian airbase in Latakia are also closed from the sea to a distance of 100-250 km from the coast to the fleet of the Russian Federation, which is now conducting exercises in the Mediterranean sea.

Thus, the U.S. and its allies can't even carry out reconnaissance on the forces of the Russian Federation.

A source in the military circles of the American contingent in Turkey reported that NATO aircraft, trying to get close to the forces of the Russian Federation, were illuminated by radar, while the source of illumination could not even be identified.

"The Russians have made it understood, that they can see everything, and not to get anywhere closer, or be shot down", - noted the American military.

"Frankly speaking, we were surprised by the air defense system of Russia. We can't even assume which systems are deployed there. We are encountering them for the first time, most likely there are the latest complexes S-400. I have no more clues" - said Colonel Jack Jacobs.

Bloomberg also writes about the creation of the Russian no-fly zone over Syria, citing senior American military. So, the commander of the NATO forces in Europe General Philip Breedlove stated that the new military infrastructure of Russia in Syria, including the air defense systems, de facto creates a no-fly zone.

According to Breedlove, Russia has created over Syria a "sphere of denial", which American planes can't enter.

It's always difficult to determine if some of these comments by western military types are true or just bullshit trying to give Russia a false sense of security.

If true, it reinforces what happened to the US warship a few months ago in the Black Sea when Russian planes flew overhead and essentially switched off all of its electronic radar/tracking/missile defence systems, turning it into a sitting duck.

This is looking more and more like what the Russians did in 1990 and 1991 when the U.S. leveled the Iraqi military in reverse.

The Soviet military sat back watched and assessed and said that the U.S. would be heading into another Vietnam and when that didn't happen they then said "well" now it's time to put the flag on the ground...  fast forward 12 years later after the event and 12 trillion dollars and bankruptcy later that is a feudal city double thick and surrounded with jersey walls and barbed wire and layer upon layer of contractors to guard what is anything but an "embassy" and Russia played it's chess well.

Washington and Tel Aviv want to see what the capabilities of the Russian Air Force and Army are like before they go into the catastrophe that will make their Vietnam memories fade into a distant tenth place...

Then folks it will be up to the George Soros' group and his handlers to decide whether or not they want to spend the rest of their lives living undergorund with paid protection that ain't gonna be too happy when they no longer have any of those "creature comforts" they've been so spoiled to keep for too long!!!!

Obviously you are not knowledgable in modern Russian fighter capabilities.  Do some serious research - you might be surprised.  The SU-30MKI can take on most any plane in the sky, certainly the F-16.  An F-22 might have a better chance at defeating it, but would the US risk such expensive equipment given Russia's ground-based anti-aircraft capabilities?  I don't think so.  You live in a drean world where the US has no competition - that is simply not true anymore.

I'd say the same thing about rural people in the northern US.  I think it's the combination of poverty, distance and climate.  When the weather can kill you anytime you let your attention wander you tend to be very persistent about the indispensables of life.  You don't, for instance, assume a very robust, always-on high-speed wireless internet connection.  Nor that electricity is going to work in bad weather.  Nor that anyone is going to come to help you when you need it.

People laugh at me for the survival stuff in the back of my tiny car in the city (Minneapolis), but I've used almost all of it even living in the city.  I wouldn't drive in the country without it.  If you're going to have a flat tire, dead battery, slide into the ditch or get marooned on ice, or get caught in a whiteout, you want to do it near me.  I do take the grain shovel out of the back in the summer, to save space.  But the other stuff?  No way.

I have no use for the American leaders, either.

Interesting comment.  I learned the same thing about the Chinese.  I was in Beijing in the winter time - darn near froze my butt off.  That wind that sweeps down from the north is absolutely bitter.  But there are a LOT of Chinese doing daily activities in that climate.  The people from northern China, they are a VERY TOUGH people.

It doesn't pay to be fooled by stereotypes.  What's on the ground is a different reality.
