The REAL Reason Saudi Arabia Hates Iran

George Washington's picture

Everyone knows that the Saudi Arabia – the center of Sunni Islam – hates Iran because it is the center for the rival Shia Muslim sect.

The Saudis – close U.S. allies – also hate Iran because it is allied with Russia.

But there is a third, little-known reason why the Saudi government hates Iran.

As the Gulf Cooperation Council – the official council for the Arab Gulf States, comprised of the monarchies of Saudi Arabi, Kuwait, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Omanwrites:

More than any other single factor, the Iranian Revolution helped to coalesce the security concerns of Saudi Arabia and the other monarchies in the Gulf region. As the largest Arab monarchy, Saudi Arabia was in a position to lead the others toward cooperative efforts. The impact of the Iranian Revolution on Saudi Arabia was manifold. The revolution destroyed the most powerful monarchy in the Gulf area. It was the second revolution to send shock waves throughout the Gulf region, the first being the revolution in Iraq that destroyed the monarchy in 1958. The Iraqi revolution had been followed by deteriorating relations between Riyadh and Baghdad, when the Baathist regime tried to subvert the Gulf monarchies. The Iranian example, however, appeared more menacing. The balance of forces seemed to have changed further against the monarchical regimes in the region because Iran, like Iraq, replaced the monarchy with a republic. Whatever course the new Iranian republic took, its very existence would threaten Saudi Arabia and other Gulf monarchies.

In other words, the Saudi government hates Iran because it is a republic, while Saudi Arabia and the other Gulf states are monarchies.

Indeed, Vijay Prashad – Professor of South Asian History at Trinity College, Connecticut – said today (starting at 33:22) that the Saudis want to crush Iran so that it cannot set an example showing that Muslims can live in a republic without a monarchy.

Prashad points out that the “Saudis made claim that a Muslim country has to be a monarchy”, and Iran’s very existence undermines that claim.

Why does the U.S. support Saudi Arabia and not Iran?

As Lawrence Davidson – author of Islamic Fundamentalism, and professor of history at West Chester University – explains:

Saudi Arabia is a monarchy without representative institutions. Iran, though ideologically authoritarian and possessing the dictatorial office of jurisprudent, is a republic with a parliament and an electoral process. Saudi Arabia strictly forbids female participation in the public realm, whereas Iran leaves some space for women in this regard.

Given these comparisons, it would seem that, in terms of institutions and their potential for “democratic evolution,” the Islamic Republic in Iran has much more to recommend it to the West than does Saudi Arabia.  Why then, one might ask, is the United States so much more hostile to Iran than to Saudi Arabia?

***

For decades, the United States supported the shah’s monarchy in Iran and continued to do so even after it was clear that it was unpopular, corrupt, and oppressive. When the shah was overthrown, the fundamentalists who took power identified the United States with the deposed government. The new Iranian government’s predictable hostility made difficult any reconciliation between the two powers and fueled continued American animosity.

Indeed, the U.S. supports virtually all of the dictatorial monarchies in the Arab Gulf.

And, of course, there is oil and pipelines play a big part.

Postscript:   By way of background, the CIA admits that the U.S. overthrew the moderate, suit-and-tie-wearing, Democratically-elected prime minister of Iran in 1953. He was overthrown because he had nationalized Iran’s oil, which had previously been controlled by BP and other Western oil companies. As part of that action, the CIA admits that it hired Iranians to pose as Communists and stage bombings in Iran in order to turn the country against its prime minister.

If the U.S. hadn’t overthrown the moderate Iranian government, the fundamentalist Mullahs would have never taken over. (Moreover, the U.S. has had a large hand in strengthening radical Islam in the Middle East by supporting radicals to fight the Soviets and others).

I'd call that a pretty good value.

Toned down enough?: If my mother was still alive, she would have said ' you do NOT, under any circumstances, lower yourself so much as to associate with people like the Saudis'.

Not sure, whether it's got to do anything with a monarchy or republic. I had a German relative who worked in Tehran in 1970, not knowing much about the country, then under the Shah. The first thing Iranians would tell you was 'We are NOT Arabs'. They seemed to detest them and to them the Arabs are Semites - Go figure. The Kurds are closer to Persians so obviously they will hit you over the head, too, if you say they're Arabs.

The Soviets were tricked into marching into Afghanistan over Christmas 1979 because US entities had used muslim issues to 'tickle' the Soviets in the neighbouring Tadjiik Soviet Republic. And then the jeenie couldn't be put back in the bottle.

GW,

There was one more reason that the CIA overthrew the Iranian government back in the 50s.  It looked like Iran was going to pivot towards the USSR.  Sound familiar?  Ukraine pivots towards Russia...

Kermit's fake Commies didn't get any traction. Oddly enough, it was the real Commie riots the next day that resulted in Mossedegh's arrest. The real Commies thought Mossedegh too moderate even with the promise to nationalize the oil companies infrastructure.

The CIA's hail Mary pass got the Shah in Iran just in time for the bribed Generals to support.

CIA only gets half credit for capitalizing on an event that they failed to produce.

Our foreign policy in the middle east is so entrenched it would be difficult to change it. I think Obama has tried but he is fighting so many different forces. The military-industrial complex, CIA/NSA, oil company lobbies, Israel, hatred of Russia, and general public opinion which has not caught up with the historical truth. Most of the public is confused about who are the bad guys and nobody main stream is willing to report with much objectivity. This kind of "tunnel vision" is what will lead us to war and it if does it will be a war on which we will be on the wrong side.

Having said all that it would be nice if someone stood up and said, "you know, we have to change course in the Middle East and re-evaluate our policies and decide who are our real enemies." A lot of the turmoil (which is getting worse every day) is the result of our bad policies since the end of WWI and as for the European actors it stems from long standing ethnic rivalries and nationalism.

The Persian recites poetry during coitus as their women are beautiful and sensual.

The Arab recites the Coran as their women are the masked mystery of a riddle wrapped in an enigma and surrounded by four layers of prayer cloth.

The reason that was left out of this article is perhaps the most important one of all. This is that the Rothschild led cabal of criminal bankers running the central banks of most of the world do not run the Iranian central bank. What makes this issue even bigger is that the Iranians are opposed to the charging of interest. If you look at the list of countries that General Wesley Clark mentioned were in line for regime change by the US  it began with Iraq and then Libya, next was Syria and then Iran. What linked all these countries was that they did not have Rothschild controlled central banks. It was not coincidence that once Gadaffi was murdered a Rothschild controlled central bank opened almost immediately in Libya. George this would be a better angle for you to take- Saudi Arabia has a Rothschild controlled central bank!

Here's an interestig tidbit I just read: Russia currently has a Rothschild controlled central bank. But Putin is said to be trying to replace it.

Fri, 10/09/2015 - 19:28 | 6651022 datura
datura's picture

Yes, Russia has a Rothschild bank and Putin is not happy about it, however, it has not been in his power to legally changed that. Instead, he has to "wrestle" with the Bank. The last trouble with that damned bank was in December.

"Although the Russian Central Bank is independent of the Kremlin, Vladimir Putin — far from an expert on monetary policy — said recently that while he stands behind the bank’s independence on matters regarding inflation and interest rates, he was “watching the bank closely” following the ruble’s disastrous slide in December."    Following the fall of the ruble, Putin sacked U.S. trained economist in charge of ruble. Central Bank governor Elvira Nabiullina (former Putin's economic adviser) then deployed emergency measures to prop up the ruble.

Then it seems that Nabiullina somehow received more powers and started to make wonders. Which led to interesting correspondence with the Wall Street, e.g.

"The Wall Street Journal requested a comment from the Central Bank of Russia, why it did this or that….amid concern about the central bank’s ability to withstand pressure from the Kremlin. The Bank of Russia has defended its independence and said its directors alone are responsible for Russia’s monetary policy."

Moreover, Russia has been joining its banking system with the Iranian one and they are now even launching an islamic banking system - in parallel with the Western one. Russians do not want the Western banking system anymore, but they are not sure, what to replace it with. The most easy and fast option seems to be the islamic banking.

Abbey Martin's new production, this one on Empire and the decline of the US, contains smart graphics, one being US military bases around the world. Noteworthy is how Iran is now fully ringed...Mullahs still have some holdout resistance factor...and after seeing what the US has done in Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Syria, and remembering Madeline Allbright's view on sanctions vs 500,000 dead Iraqi children, I conclude that the Mullahs either have big balls, or deep faith in their protection by Allah. Probably both. One of the Jewish stories I'm inspired by is David and Goliath, though as I'm not a Chosenite, I may not be entitled.

Nonetheless, all resistors need faith and big balls..

BHO is a Sunni. Sunnis and Shiites hate each other on a nationalistic/religious level. The Saudis fear the Iranians and depend on the USA to defend them from the Iranians. As the American government has weakened support for Israel, the Saudis have become friendlier toward Israel and have done weapons deals with China.

If BHO can raise the perceived threat level from Iran toward Israel to the point that Israel feels forced to exercise the Sampson option, Sunni Islam wins. At least that seems to be the strategy. At the same time, the vicious, hateful, violent, turmoil in the Middle East is dissolving borders and causing mass migrations. BHO is offering up the US as destination for "refugees" and true refugees, as long as they are not ME Christians. A muslim-controlled UN agency is in charge of verifying refugee status. Christians cannot get certified. The Muslims would overwhelm the US through our slavish adherence to political correctness and tolerance and their birth rates. Americans are marginalizing ourselves in our own country. For good measure, BHO intends to take firearms away from the citizens. Very soon, Obama will have the fundamental transformation of America that he promised.
