Volkswagen Of America CEO Grilled In Congress Over Emissions Scandal - Live Webcast

Tyler Durden's picture

What may be the worst month in Volkswagen's corporate history is about to get a cherry on top, when the CEO of Volkswagen of America CEO Michael Horn is set undergo the Kangaroo Court treatment, when he testifies before a House Energy and Commerce  subcommittee investigating last month's admission the company had installed on-board computer software designed to cheat on government emissions tests in nearly 500,000 of its four-cylinder "clean diesel" cars starting with the 2009 model year.

According to ABC, an advance copy of Horn's prepared remarks provided to the committee Wednesday revealed VW's plans to withdraw applications seeking U.S. emissions certifications for its 2016 model Jettas, Golfs, Passats and Beetles with diesel engines. That raised questions about whether a so-called "defeat device" similar to that in earlier models is also in the new cars.

By withdrawing the applications for the 2016 models, VW is leaving thousands of diesel vehicles stranded at ports nationwide, giving dealers no new diesel-powered vehicles to sell. It wasn't immediately clear when VW would refile its application, but Horn's testimony said the company is working with regulators to get certification.

In other words, the massive "channel stuffing" car parking lots previously observed in the vicinity of major US ports are about to get even bigger.

More on today's hearing:

Thursday's appearance will be the first on Capitol Hill by Horn, a 51-year-old German and veteran VW manager who took the reins of the brand's American subsidiary last year. He is expected to face blistering questions about when top executives at the company first learned of the scheme.

Horn will tell Congress he only learned about the cheating software "over the past several weeks," VW spokeswoman Jeannine Ginivan told The Associated Press Wednesday. He will also echo prior statements by the company's global chief executive apologizing for the cheating.

The agenda for today's hearing is as follows:

Panel I

Michael Horn

President and Chief Executive Officer
Volkswagen Group of America
Witness Testimony

Panel II

Christopher Grundler
Director
Office of Transportation and Air Quality
Office of Air and Radiation
Witness Testimony

Phillip Brooks
Director
Air Enforcement Division
Office of Enforcement and Compliance Assurance
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency

What is worse - the foul stench and destructive emissions from the US Congress or a few ppm extra from internal combustion engines?

I say, seal up the congress and senate buildings and let them all die from their own noxious emissions.

If Congress was sincere about cutting emissions, they would have funded the Stan Meyer HHO Zero Emissions technology whose US Patents expired in 2008. Steven Greer put such a proposal on the desk of every congressional representative, so they can not say they don't know about this. Their only excuse for not supporting this Zero Emission technology is that they are owned by the criminals who have suppressed it.

Now's about a good time for the Hausfrau to grow a set and put away the worries about sex toys & spy agenices for sake of saving her own country from instant vaporization, and re-building relationships with nations who want to work together as opposed to that other nation whose existence depends upon endless regime-changes, color-revolutions, various & sundry overthrows, etc...

Well yeah, with software you can do something about everything..to include cars that "virtually" don't pollute:) Watch the Quants of Wall Street documentary to find out how this works...Mike Osinski who created the software that all the banks abused for sub prime loans tells you exactly how it is.  By the way, pay attention to the stress of the Quants who write this code..as Quant Paul Wilmott says "the quants are the boss".  Quants create the cheating model and subsequent code.  A group of IT folks implements it.

So, don't like your health insurance policy?  Well guess what, tons of armies of quants now work at health insurers that used to work at banks, hedge funds, etc, same stuff going on over there.  Now Obama has nominated one big huge quant, names Andy Slavitt, who's also a former Goldman banker to run CMS.  Tell your senators to say no on the confirmation.  The quants are the business so get this one out of CMS.

What will happen is that Volkswagon will offer customers a recall to get a software fix that will leave the emissions equipment turned on at all times (it did pass when it was turned on during testing). The first customers to get the fix will complain about a 20% drop in mileage and power, so the remaining customers will skip the fix!

Volkswagon will point the blame at the guy that got fired (with a golden parachute), pay a fine equal to one hour of government spending, Congress will get its 'defender of global warming' sound bites, and life will go on.

How do you enforce this? Who is going to enforce it? A checkbox on some form? Afadavit from VW to DMV...as if lines aren't already long enough? What about the millions of other cars from other manufacturers that are doing the same thing?

Why would I want a 20% drop on mileage and power? Queue black market for VW TDI smog paperwork.

If it can be reprogrammed, it can be....reprogrammed.

I don't know what really happened at VW but this is one possible scenario and I just don't see them being able to fix the issue.

Fact: VW engineers build engines that cannot pass the emission tests mechanically.  Software engineers fix the issue by cheating the tests.

Scenario:  VW engineers now needed to build an engine that can not just pass the emission test but beat the "performance" of the cheating software.  So did they stop trying to design an engine that could beat the cheating enginess?  If they replaced the cheat engines with engines that could meet the emissions but not provide the performance of the cheat engines people would have said WTF.

Has VW been saving millions of dollars on engine design because they had the cheat?  Can they design an engine to meet the emissions by January 2016?  Stay tuned.

VW, BMW and M-Bz jointly came up with the clean diesel tech, but it was very expensive and required the regular addition of diesel additive fluid (or refined urea) to keep the emissions clean.  That's not much of an issue when the vehicles sell for upwards of $50K but at the $25K level, it's a sales-killer.  So VW only kept the clean diesel tech on their luxury vehicles and went with the good/evil switch on the econoboxes.
