Brazil Bank Interest Rates At 20-Year High

Tyler Durden's picture

Things in Brazil are getting worse by the day as the following brief summary of soaring interest rates courtesy of BNAmerics demonstrates.

Brazil Bank Interest Rates At 20-Year High

Brazil's overdraft interest rates reached 12.28% in October, the highest since September 1995 when the rate was 12.58%, according to research conducted by consumer protection group Procon.

Of the seven financial institutions included in the research, five increased their overdraft rates and one upped its rate for personal loans. The average overdraft rate of 12.28% per month was higher than that registered in September, 11.90%.

The bank that increased its rate the most was Caixa Econômica Federal, which changed its rate to 11.38% from 10.35% per month, a variation of 9.95% when compared to the September rate, Procon said.

Santander saw a positive variation of 4.21% from the previous month, Banco do Brasil had a variation of 3.69%, Itaú's variation was 2.58%, and Bradesco's was 2.41%. Other banks maintained their rates.

For personal loans, the average rate of banks surveyed was 6.27% per month, higher than the previous month, which was 6.26%. Bradesco raised its rate to 6.61% per month, an increase of 0.61% over September's rate. Other banks maintained their rates.

That said, she doesn't appear too concerned.

I've just the thing for you...I have a spare nice 2 bed apartment in downtown Curitiba for BRL 260,000. Excellent decorative condition and fabulous views. 5 mins walk to lovely squares, shops, bars, restaurants. Curitiba possibly one of Brazil's nicest cities and only 40mins flying time from São Paulo for international connections.

Not bad, thats like 75k USD.

You might do better renting it out for like $500 a week and hire a local to keep them safe and out of trouble. You do need connections.

Everything and anything goes in Brasil but you have to do it properly or you might find yourself in a shitload of trouble.

Just saying

Renting out in Brazil doesn't usually provide a good return due to low rents outside of the hot spots of Rio etc for sucker tourists.

$500 pw would be a dreamland income. A realistic rental value would be max BRL 1500 pm with renter paying condominium.

The good news is we think there's a buyer interested at the full asking price...

Curitiba looks looks a very nice city, not to big and not to small. Looks like about a 2 hour van ride to the beach.

I have a son in Belem that I visit every once in a while. What a nightmare city that is. Traffic is hell, noise pollution and crime is unreal. The locals are wonderfull people though. Luckly he lives in a nice barrio.

Good luck with selling your apt and nice to meet you.

"De gustibus non disputandum est."  Tastes cannot be argued.  In my view, the most beautiful women in the world are found in Chile and Ethiopia.  Every group has its charms, and tastes can be acquired.  The most sophisticated and best dressers are the French, and the most lovable, the Panamanians.

The point is, that the Central Brank of Bra-zil, like any other central bank in the world is a branch of FED and a currency board. It is FED that sets high interest rates in colonies, and that's one of the mechanisms of the colonial taxation -- regardles of what subtle propaganda tools like ZH try to present.

For the life of me I can't get why sheeple hate FED, without FED the country would become the United States of Apocalypse.

GOOD! This is the most positive news I've read all day. The only way to solve too much debt is high interest rates. The people need to be trained not to borrow like dumb mules via pain. They need to walk into that bank and actually use a calculator asking themselves, "Can I really afford these ridiculous payments?"

That is the first crack in the debt wall.

What excellent news!

Portuguese Lessons in Seattle

"Our Portuguese speakers, fully qualified to teach their native tongue, can train you and, if need be, the rest of your group at a time that is suitable to you, at your home or place of work. Sessions can take place on the day of your choosing - even weekends - and at the time you want: whether it be morning, afternoon or evening. If circumstances arise where your home or office is not convenient, the classes can be held at your trainer's office. Resources for the lesson are provided for you."
