US Paradrops 50 Tons Of Ammo To Syrian Rebels

Tyler Durden's picture

As we noted over the weekend, the US has now thrown in the towel on the ill-fated (and that’s putting it lightly) strategy of training Syrian fighters and sending them into battle only to be captured and killed by other Syrian fighters who the US also trained.

The Pentagon’s effort to recruit 5,400 properly “vetted” anti-ISIS rebels by the end of the year ended in tears when the entire world laughed until it cried after word got out that only “four or five” of these fighters were actually still around. The rest are apparently either captured, killed, lost in the desert, or fighting for someone else.

This has cost the US taxpayer somewhere in the neighborhood of $40 million over the last six months.

Because this latest program was such a public embarrassment, the Pentagon had to come up with a new idea to assist Syria’s “freedom fighters” now that they are fleeing under bombardment by the Russian air force only to be cut down by Hezbollah.

The newest plan: helicopter ammo. No, really. The US has now resorted to dropping "tons" of ammo into the middle of nowhere and hoping the “right” people find it.

No, really.

Here’s CNN:

U.S. military cargo planes gave 50 tons of ammunition to rebel groups overnight in northern Syria, using an air drop of 112 pallets as the first step in the Obama Administration's urgent effort to find new ways to support those groups.

Details of the air mission over Syria were confirmed by a U.S. official not authorized to speak publicly because the details have not yet been formally announced.

C-17s, accompanied by fighter escort aircraft, dropped small arms ammunition and other items like hand grenades in Hasakah province in northern Syria to a coalition of rebels groups vetted by the US, known as the Syrian Arab Coalition.

And here's a bit more color from GOP mouthpiece Fox News:

The ammunition originally was intended for the U.S. military's "train and equip" mission, the official said. But that program was canceled last week.

"So now we are more focused on the 'E' [equip] part of the T&E [train & equip]," said the official, who described equipping Syrian Arabs as the focus of the new strategy against ISIS.

The Defense Department announced Friday that it was overhauling the mission to aid Syrian rebel fighters. After the program fell far short of its goals for recruiting and training Syrian fighters, the DOD said it would focus instead on providing "equipment packages and weapons to a select group of vetted leaders and their units so that over time they can make a concerted push into territory still controlled by ISIL."

The shift also comes as Russia continues to launch airstrikes in Syria, causing tension with the U.S. amid suspicions Moscow is only trying to prop up Bashar Assad.

Col. Steve Warren, spokesman for the U.S.-led anti-ISIS coalition, confirmed that coalition forces conducted the airdrop on Sunday.

"The aircraft delivery includes small arms ammunition to resupply counter-ISIL ground forces so that they can continue operations against ISIL. All aircraft exited the drop area safely," he said in a statement. All pallets successfully were recovered by friendly forces, a U.S. official said.

Yes, “friendly forces.”

Just let the hilarity of that sink in.

The US just paradropped 50 tons of ammo on pallets into the most dangerous place on the face of the planet with no way of ensuring that it falls into the "right" hands (it goes without saying that the term "right" is meaningless there). Meanwhile, the Russians are dropping bombs on the same extremists who are set to receive the guns the US is dropping.

Of course if it does somehow fall into the “wrong” hands, it wouldn’t be the first time (see Mosul and recall the $500 billion worth of weapons Washington “misplaced” in Yemen) and as we said a few days ago, this is at least great news for the military-industrial complex. It means more "terrorist attacks" on U.S. "friends and allies", and perhaps even on U.S. soil - all courtesy of the US government supplying the weapons - are imminent.

Russia is right now putting S-300 to bed, it's replacement missile system is now going out to active units of Russian Anti Aircraft units.

From the released specs on it, it looks very bad news for any potential attacker on Russia.

https://www.rt.com/news/vityaz-air-defense-russia-984/

One reason that Russia has stopped backing down to the West , after over 2 decades of surrender to US power, is, I believe the confidence that Russia now has that it can defend it's nation and forces from the US Air Power. US military power stems greatly from it's superior aircraft. Russia believes that their newest A.A. missiles and electronics negates this former total domination that US Air Forces have enjoyed.

Since the USA has not seen a modern A.A. missile system since 1972 over Hanoi North Vietnam, there is no way to know if US aircraft are immune to 21st century missile and radar technology.

We appear to have a tactic of locating the launchers, sending in drones to attack, then safe use of fighters. The S-300 missiles are v. large, hence expensive.

Capable of being overwhelmed by more numerous, smaller, and faster drones?

Logical. That is why all Russian systems including the radars are mobile, and accompanied by many decoy units. Also, each large A.A. complex has it's own shorter range mobile A.A. systems. TOR-M2u wull defend the larger systems, and the Pantsir-1, will deal with drones. The three systems combined operate to negate the threats you mention. Pantsir and TOR both have totally new missiles and radars in place, making them top of the line 2015 AA systems.

Pantsir-1 is shorter range, and ideal to kill drones.

If interested, just google these systems, there is endless information on them to be found.

I know the US Navy is the one service in the USA that admits that fixed wing strike aircraft may be unable to perform. The NAVY has little faith in the US Air Force being the owner of the battle field. Or at least, that was my experience in the USA. They are very up front in their recognition of Russian modern A.A. systems.

And nerv forget the role of decoys. The Serbs attracted US air strikes in the NATO air war using old micro wave ovens! Yep, all you needed was a good radation source in the right bandwidth. And in come the guided bombs and cruise missiles to blow up granny's old micro wave. Google Serbian Airwar/decoys, for a real education!

Russia never honored it's contract to deliver the S-300 to Syria or Iran.  They were left helpless against the foreign jets.

Russia will never fire one on NATO until there is a confirmed Russia jet taken down by a NATO fired missile. If Russian jets go down from high tech supplied to the proxy army I would think Russia will still not use the S-300/350/400 against NATO.  Russia will be stuck only striking back at the ISIS proxy types.  Russian helicopters may start getting hit soon.

Russia is still being cautious to avoid NATO.  The bold step to take is to have Assad officially announce only Russia is allowed to fly over Syria in accordance with international law.  Then have Russia enforce it by delcaring Syria a nofly zone for all but Russia as requested by Syria.  And then enforce it.    Otherwise the west will creep back in and stall or reverse the gains.

The C17s dropped the weapons in the far east of Syria, outside the range of all but the Su 24s. This is the area bordering Iraq, heavily infested by ISIS, and key to breaking the land route between Iran and Lebanon.

If you mean by "they", the US military you get a down vote.

If you might consider "they" as Russian military locating and blowing up what was just dropped I would give you an up vote.

If this stuff gets used or blown up it is good for the International Military Industrial Complex. Our military justifies ordering more and Russians get to order more rockets and jet fighter parts. Its all good for employment numbers.

Maybe the US and Russia have a deal to blow stuff up and put people to work making more.

You're actually correct in that the Russians will be all over this (especially as the US pallet drop will have contained stingers, man-pads and anti tank equipment), will follow and track who does the pick up and and where it goes. 2 weeks from now those same Yallah Yallah Snackbarists will be absolutely hammered by the Russians.

Bait, or booby trapped weapons, or tagged with rfid trackers, or remote detonation weapons, or trucks with remote kill buttons, their use would all indicate some sort of bizarre US NSA State Dept CIA learning curve after giving Stingers® to the Taliban.

I assure you the have no such learning curve, if anything we're even looser with advanced missiles.

Two observations.

First, as some other ZH commentators wrote, do not expect the USA new world order to give up.  When its puppets (or gay bath house aficionado presidents) come out and say that we are 'pulling out', that should be a major warning signal that a counter attack is coming.

Second, since the powers that be have slid into pretty astounding pits of I don't know what, they don't even have competent minions anymore.  Dropping pallets of weapons, cash, porno, inter alia, will be watched in short order by Russia.  I suppose one can argue that 'that is the plan' to 'test Russia's capabilities.'

Indeed, I would argue that after the cruise missile show that Putin performed gratis for the whole world, there is no point to 'testing' Russia.

The CIA's anti-communism budget evolves from $5 million to over $500 million (with the same amount matched by Saudi Arabia), startling several congressmen. This effort by Charlie ultimately evolves into a major portion of the U.S. foreign policy known as the Reagan Doctrine, under which the U.S. expanded assistance beyond just the mujahideen and began also supporting other anti-communist resistance movements around the world.

This proves that Iraq Parliament members were right when they said the USA was air dropping arms to ISIS in Iraq, right along the battle lines. Iraqi army watched US and British Helicopters drop arms right onto ISIS.

So the same plan is now in force in Syria. The USA now claims Al-Nusra and Al-Qaeda both as Moderate Rebels with whom the USA is allied and will support going forward.

How many of you remember the Bush claims to hunt Al-Qaeda down, "Dead or Alive", remember CNN and FOX parroting this call to arms! Do any of you recall that Washington said "Al-Qaeda did 9/11"?

How far we have come.

What does all this say? It says we on ZH who have claimed the USA support all forms of Islamic Terror were right. Even ISIS could never exist without the years of US run training camps in Turkey and Jordan, In fact, that is where most ISIS were armed and equipped.

This policy of supporting radical Islam by Neocon Washington has it's roots in the great victory the US gained in Afghanistan when the USSR was kicked out by US backed Taliban.

Let me guess...it's all .22 LR? Terrific....

Mon, 10/12/2015 - 14:02 | 6659315 Hubbs
Hubbs's picture

Yes. See James Wesley Rawles' evaluation of 22LR from his www.survivalblog.com  post

JWR Replies: I have to disagree. .22 LR has a rainbow trajectory, and very poor energy at long range. The ballistic trajectory of .22LR makes it suitable for shooting at only 100 yards or less.

Here are the trajectory drops in inches for a typical high velocity .22LR with a 40 grain bullet traveling at 1,050 feet per second, if zeroed for 50 yards:

75 yards: -2.6?

100 yards: -7.6?

125 yards: -15.2?

150 yards: -25.6?

175 yards: -38.8?

200 yards: -55?

225 yards: -74.5?

250 yards: -97.2?

Thus, at 200 yards you would need to hold over your target nearly “a full man’s height”, and at 250 yards you have to hold over almost “a man and a half.” And the bullet’s energy at 200 yards is barely 1/2 of what it had at the muzzle.(54.9 ft.-lbs., versus 97.9 ft.-lbs.)

In my estimation your .22 LRs should be relegated for small game shooting at 100 yards or less. If your goal is “suppression” (to make noise and keep the enemy’s head down), then you will need a noisy, high power rifle. (.22LR does not sound sufficiently threatening.) If you want to do that inexpensively, then I recommend that you buy a used SKS.

Thanks, but I should have typed in the (sarc). I was referencing the neckbearding of the .22LR ammo going on...implying the government was doing it. My apology for not being clear.

Mon, 10/12/2015 - 15:42 | 6659748 Hubbs
Hubbs's picture

I perfectly understand. I thought your comment was great and I gave it a thumbs up. I loved the sarcasm right from the start! The whole idea is so ridiculous-sending in ammo like that which will only weigh them down /slow them down in their retreat.  (Ammo is very heavy to carry-even a 30 mm ammo can for the .223). If they drop their weapons and run, what makes you think they will stop uncrate and resupply any ammo?

At this point, miltary caliber ammo airplane drops (.308, 5.56, 7.62, 50 BMG etc) are about as useless as dropping 22LR which you have correctly assessed.

On the contrary, it is I who can not figure out why I got so many down votes for agreeing with your sarcasm, giving some incidental facts that might make the post a little more interesting and informative.

Finally, if the US were air dropping  22LR, it could explain the relative shortage of 22LR here in the US (sarc).

I am familiar with humping ammo over long distances (prior 0351 here). At least rifle ammo is a little easier to carry than the DRAGON I used to carry, and occasionally a SAW (when it was my turn).

The SAW, with the plastic rattling drum, the weapon equivalent of maracas, saying I am here, over and over, with every step. I once was in a helicopter forced landing at night, found one of my men stumbling around the area, I asked him what was he doing, he was picking up the pieces of his SAW as he found them. Dam thing fell apart from the force of the landing. I was in the first group to get the SAW, mine fell apart in my arms on the first road march. Not a fan, I guess you could say. By the way, we didn't "take turns" carrying the SAW, in the US Infantry, the SAW is assigned to the automatic riflemen, two per squad. Your comment reminds me of a female MP I talked to once, she said she was a "60 gunner". I asked her who humped the spare barrel, tripod etc. She didn't know what I was talking about.

Here's the funny thing about that whole operation.

50 tons is less than two C-17 max cargo loads - two planes.

You fly C-17 into hostile airspace with a fighter escort you have two choices.

One, you fly low enough that your payload actually reaches the "friendlies" opening yourself up to manpads, etc. The effective range of just the old SA-7 is less than 4000 meters. Iran has some varieties to 5000 meters. - No-mans airspace just like AfPak.

The second option is to drop above that ceiling and hope the weather does not let your package drift too far.

Sure its a desert and there is a lot of science in high speed drops to get on target, but consider the size of the convoy to move 50 tons of ammo and anti-tank launchers. That's a lot of targets sitting in the desert without air support.

Russia will certainly put more Su-34 on station going forward.

The real calamity is why this is even being made public - thanks CNN.

This public action will certainly drive all parties to secure Syrian airspace in northern Syria and Iraq and against Kurd territory as these fights are being sent in from Germany or Italy and otherwise drive Iranian assets deeper into theater from Iraq.

Seems Obombo is channeling Tricky Dick Nixon and all the Cambodia/Menu secret bombing missions or Reagan Yellow Fruit/Contras.

It created the Khmer Rouge, it Created "ISIS." What Frankenstein creature will Obama make next in his Middle East Laboratory?

The games Presidents play.

Do you think CNN will open that topic up at the next Democratic "debate?"

I was a ground pounder during the Vietnam era. So, I never personally used the following device that I first came across in 1969:

An altimeter is attached to a carbondioxide cartridge, which is attached to a pin that keeps the parachute contained in its kit. The altimeter was accurate to about 100 feet. At the designated altitude (set in 100-foot increments) the altimeter is set to trigger the carbon dioxide cartridges, which in turn blow out the retaining pins in the parachute kits. For human beings the altimeter would be set for 1200 feet (operations) or 2000 feet (training). For cargo it would be set around 600-800 feet.

The use of such devices would limit the size and dispersion of the impact area. Further, if the time and target zone of the air drop is known in advance, it can be secured in advance and the bulk of the cargo can fall into the hands of the "right" people.

If there is an Air Force loadmaster among our readership, maybe he could expand on this description; and correct as necessary.
