US Paradrops 50 Tons Of Ammo To Syrian Rebels

Tyler Durden's picture

As we noted over the weekend, the US has now thrown in the towel on the ill-fated (and that’s putting it lightly) strategy of training Syrian fighters and sending them into battle only to be captured and killed by other Syrian fighters who the US also trained.

The Pentagon’s effort to recruit 5,400 properly “vetted” anti-ISIS rebels by the end of the year ended in tears when the entire world laughed until it cried after word got out that only “four or five” of these fighters were actually still around. The rest are apparently either captured, killed, lost in the desert, or fighting for someone else.

This has cost the US taxpayer somewhere in the neighborhood of $40 million over the last six months.

Because this latest program was such a public embarrassment, the Pentagon had to come up with a new idea to assist Syria’s “freedom fighters” now that they are fleeing under bombardment by the Russian air force only to be cut down by Hezbollah.

The newest plan: helicopter ammo. No, really. The US has now resorted to dropping "tons" of ammo into the middle of nowhere and hoping the “right” people find it.

No, really.

Here’s CNN:

U.S. military cargo planes gave 50 tons of ammunition to rebel groups overnight in northern Syria, using an air drop of 112 pallets as the first step in the Obama Administration's urgent effort to find new ways to support those groups.

Details of the air mission over Syria were confirmed by a U.S. official not authorized to speak publicly because the details have not yet been formally announced.

C-17s, accompanied by fighter escort aircraft, dropped small arms ammunition and other items like hand grenades in Hasakah province in northern Syria to a coalition of rebels groups vetted by the US, known as the Syrian Arab Coalition.

And here's a bit more color from GOP mouthpiece Fox News:

The ammunition originally was intended for the U.S. military's "train and equip" mission, the official said. But that program was canceled last week.

"So now we are more focused on the 'E' [equip] part of the T&E [train & equip]," said the official, who described equipping Syrian Arabs as the focus of the new strategy against ISIS.

The Defense Department announced Friday that it was overhauling the mission to aid Syrian rebel fighters. After the program fell far short of its goals for recruiting and training Syrian fighters, the DOD said it would focus instead on providing "equipment packages and weapons to a select group of vetted leaders and their units so that over time they can make a concerted push into territory still controlled by ISIL."

The shift also comes as Russia continues to launch airstrikes in Syria, causing tension with the U.S. amid suspicions Moscow is only trying to prop up Bashar Assad.

Col. Steve Warren, spokesman for the U.S.-led anti-ISIS coalition, confirmed that coalition forces conducted the airdrop on Sunday.

"The aircraft delivery includes small arms ammunition to resupply counter-ISIL ground forces so that they can continue operations against ISIL. All aircraft exited the drop area safely," he said in a statement. All pallets successfully were recovered by friendly forces, a U.S. official said.

Yes, “friendly forces.”

Just let the hilarity of that sink in.

The US just paradropped 50 tons of ammo on pallets into the most dangerous place on the face of the planet with no way of ensuring that it falls into the "right" hands (it goes without saying that the term "right" is meaningless there). Meanwhile, the Russians are dropping bombs on the same extremists who are set to receive the guns the US is dropping.

Of course if it does somehow fall into the “wrong” hands, it wouldn’t be the first time (see Mosul and recall the $500 billion worth of weapons Washington “misplaced” in Yemen) and as we said a few days ago, this is at least great news for the military-industrial complex. It means more "terrorist attacks" on U.S. "friends and allies", and perhaps even on U.S. soil - all courtesy of the US government supplying the weapons - are imminent.

For the first time in my life I am truly embarrassed to call myself an American. Does anyone making these decision have two brain cells to rub together? Next time there’s a school shooting, instead of sending in SWAT, just drop a few AR-15’s into the school yard and “hope they fall into the right hands".

Stupid doesn’t even begin to describe these people.

Meanwhile, US legislators are feverishly trying to come up with some way to appease the gun-grabbers and further restrict responsible firearm owner's access to both weapons and, of course, ammunition.

While we throw away literally tons of both in foreign countries. Worse, 'our' raping, beheading 'allies' might get their hands on it. And some of it might eventually find its way back here courtesy of some jihadi, to be used on the taxpayers who paid for it.

Brzezinski's 'Grand Chessboard' is being upended, the pieces scattered and holes shot through it. And none of it had to happen.

Yeah, because Russia don't have it's own version of the above, plus it can effectively seal off skies of Syria with their s-300 and s-400 systems delivered to Syrian government. Just curious, you do suggest risking Israel, Jordan, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, etc. skies for the sake of spiting Russia in Syria? You must be fresh outta West Point...

The Russians shouldpick up the ammunition with their helicopters protected by their jets during the process. Give all the ammunitions to the assad side and therefore use the US's weapons on their so called ISIS and moderates. Then send a big thank you to the US.THen tell them they cannot wait for the next free shipment.

Now that would be the news I would like to hear on CNN.

In related news, the Roman fifth caravanned into Constantinople nearly MCXX bronze swords for use by the Judean Peoples Front. Due to poor semantics of A centurion from Naples, the arms were received by officials from the People Front of Judea instead, two of whom suffered injuries sorting out which end is which. The Optio of the Syrian province is expected to ask Rome for nearly IVC Dinarii to ensure the safety of what civilians they deem "friendly".

Did Christmas come early for Assad and his troops, thanks to the US?  This is not a threat, but an opportunity...

All that Syrian and Russian forces need to do, is to either secure this arms drop for themselves, or blow it up when ISIS members come to retrieve it.

Of course Russians will want Syrian ground troops (driven there or parachuted in) to secure it, lest the US has booby-trapped them and thus to prevent loss of Russian ground forces (who may want to stand out of range, while vetting for booby traps is performed).

Then rinse and repeat with each US resupply.  Taking this concept to its logical extreme (reducto ad absurdum): "Now if they only started making similar drop offs within the US", some might say..

This is just fucking bullshit.  The so-called moderate rebel groups, if they do exist, do not use the ammo to fight ISIS.  And the US knows it.  Why so many people believe the goddamn media in this country is beyond me.  Until the government admits their support for ISIS itself, I guess all we get is propaganda.  If this country goes in the shitter this mainstream media will be a big reason why.

Great, the US is looking at banning assault style weapons in the US while dropping ammo, grenades and weapons in aerial drops into one of the most violent countries in the world.

Somehow this is supposed to bolster efforts at peace in the region.

Of course most of these weapons will be purchased off the recipients by ISIS.

It makes one wonder why there are hundreds of thousands of fleeing refugees into Europe with a Nobel peace prize winner busy restoring peace and re-building the middle east.

Perhaps given the free weapons falling from the sky it would pay to stay so you could establish yourself as an arms dealer selling free US weapons to ISIS.

Dick Cheney said in the 90s that if you took out Saddam Iraq would split apart, its on youtube.

There was a question recently about the abundance of Toyota Hilux trucks in videos of ISIS fighters.

http://www.ronpaulinstitute.org/archives/featured-articles/2015/october/...

Recently, when the US State Department resumed sending non-lethal aid to Syrian rebels, the delivery list included 43 Toyota trucks.

Hiluxes were on the Free Syrian Army’s wish list. Oubai Shahbander, a Washington-based advisor to the Syrian National Coalition, is a fan of the truck.

“Specific equipment like the Toyota Hiluxes are what we refer to as force enablers for the moderate opposition forces on the ground,” he adds. Shahbander says the US-supplied pickups will be delivering troops and supplies into battle. Some of the fleet will even become battlefield weapons.

The US F-16 lost over Bosnia (Pilot,O'Grady) was knocked down in a bizarre stratagem.

The jet was tracked by a distant radar that the AWAC's had designated as not a threat.

Position data from this "distant" radar was transmitted over LOS microwave links to a SAM

site directly under the aircraft. The missle was fired blind,no active homing seeker, using the location

data. The missles radar turned on when it was a half kilometer or so from the aircraft,no time for

evasive maneuvers by the pilot,or chaff discharge. The pilot was very lucky as the expanding rod

warhead sawed the aircraft in half right behind the cockpit, just missing the ejection seat mechanism.

It should be remembered that the nose was sheared off an airliner (TWA 008?) in a similar manner

over Long Island Sound. But they put it down to a fuel tank explosion, that the mfgr could not replicate.

The FAA fellow spent several hours unconvincingly describing the multiple sightings of smoke trails

as mass hysteria.Nothing in the world leaves evidence like an expanding rod warhead.

N.B. TWA 008 had a dozen US students going to France to practice their french language skills.

N.B. The GermanyAir flight which was flown into a mountainside had a dozen German students who

had been practicing their Spanish language skills in Barcelona, before returning home to Dusseldorf.

it doesn't matter who finds the weapons  - defense contractor profits are what count. The American people have unlimited money to pay for this  - just print the money and push off the debt to the next generation. We have to prop up the stock market or the whole world will blow up  -just like in 2008  -  We have to support Wall Street. The whole system is about to blow up again. If we don't, the Russians will destroy the Freedom Fighters in Syria and iran will certainly acqira nuclear bomb in the next 6 months and detroy Israel.

So why are we all on the hook for this electronic fraud in the form of generational debt through the "government" and its debt?

Bearing in mind that Russian economy is a disaster. We can now all come to terms with how Putin is doing his best to destroy I mean make it better...

---

Russia has spent at least $87 million in the first two weeks of its bombing campaign in Syria

Rough estimates suggest that Moscow has spent at least $87 million for air and cruise-missile strikes in the first two weeks of its bombing campaign in Syria that began September 30.

But Sutyagin, who follows the Russian military closely, estimates that the air strikes by conventional fighter jets cost at least some $2.5 million per day.

That figure covers maintenance of a force of 34 airplanes and deploying them on daily bombing runs against targets across the country. It also covers the costs of the some 2,000 specialist Russian troops who make up the expeditionary force and of providing logistics support — including ammunition and fuel — by military transport planes and ships from Russia.

Add to that another $52 million to cover the $2 million apiece cost of the 26 cruise missiles Russian ships in the Caspian fired on October 7, and the total comes to $87 million in 14 days. The amount does not include the cost of the original transport of the planes and troops to Syria.

The analyst call the estimate "conservative," saying it "might be between $1 million and $4 million more (per day) depending on the actual amount of precision guided munitions which they used."

Sutyagin says that the Defense Ministry's budget is being spent this year faster than scheduled as a result of its multiple priorities.

"In the first eight months of this year, the military had already spent 82 percent of its budget," he says. That suggests the military could exceed its budget, forcing the government to dig into national reserves to cover costs at a time when the Russian economy is reeling from low oil prices and Western sanctions.

That sounds like peanuts compared to thr trillions spent in Iraq and Afghanistan. Newman is right. The actual cost of those cruise missiles is a small fraction of the $2 million the defence contractors charge the Pentagon. I am sure the Russian military is run much more efficiently.

And speaking of reserves, at least Russia has reserves, not $20 trillion in debt!

'Tank massacre': Rebels hit Syrian forces hard after initial offensive

The Syrian government's massive offensive in northern Hama has suffered an initial setback after multiple armored vehicles were destroyed in a melee of anti-tank guided-missile fire that activist media dubbed a "tank massacre."

Rebel fighters in the north Hama region had met the joint Russian-Syrian assault by targeting the attacking regime forces on the ground "with US-made TOW missiles … [and] other guided rockets, which caused the destruction … of over 15 armored cars, vehicles, and tanks."

If they are going to do so, they had better hurry up before the terrorists all give up and pack their bags.  News out today says ISIS fighters are deserting in droves and the leaders of ISIS can no longer pay those nice bonuses that attracted so many adventurers to Syria.  ISIS is supposedly assigning some fighters to be military police to track down where all their armies have got to.

Meanwhile, Al-Nusra is getting clobbered around Idlib and the 5 guys that still call themselves the Free Syria Army are beginning to open up talks with the Russians.

Regarding those Stinger/Tow/whatever missiles that have already been "delivered" to ISIS, Al Nusra, et al, I read some speculation that they could be used in the next terrorist attack on a Middle-Eastern airline.  New Eastern Outlook site has a lot of new articles about the situation this week.  It's looking bad for the terrorists in Syria, who are heading out to Turkey and Iraq.

Seems to me every terrorist in the world is supplied guns and ammo by the USA but a simple "citizen" of the USA has to blow and suck the FBI and various other agencies to get approvals and licenses before he or she can buy a mere pea shooter for self protection.

I feel genuinely sorry for all US citizens having to watch their country's slide down into moral corruption at the most basic level. Yes, of course many of those citizens are brain-dead idiots who are cheering on their moronic champions; but even so. It's like watching a severely retarded fool walking into a slurry-pit. Just for fun I checked out the interview Putin gave today to one of the TV channels in Moscow.  This quote was toward the end of it:

". . . it’s a well-known fact that the Americans have shut down the programme to train the Free Syrian Army.

They started out with plans to train 12,000 people, then said they would train 6,000, and then they trained only 60 people, and it turned out in the end that only 4–5 people are actually out there fighting ISIS. They spent $500 million on this.

They would have done better to give $500 million to us, and we would have put it to better use in terms of fighting international terrorism, that’s for sure."

When I was young and dumb I made about 35 parachute jumps with the 82nd Airborne Division (1/325 Inf).  Many of the jumps were out of a C-141, which is similar in size and speed with the C-17.  The C-141 slowed down to about 200 mph when we were dropped, and traveled about two miles in the 30 seconds or so it took 120 of us to get out of the plane.  Depending on the air speed, wind and altitude, those 112 pallets could be scattered over a wide area.  God only knows in whose hands that ammo winds up in.

You must be the only pretend intellect on the planet who doesn't know that the refugees flooding the European countries (also Russia, if refugees had been invited there) are teaming with provocateurs, saboteurs, and and all the other troublemakers in the CIA's family of fun.

Why should Putin bring back even one refugee to Moscow if it means spending millions of rubles to make sure he is not in the pay of Obama and Brennan?

Especially since it was Obama and the CIA who had all the rioting and protesting in place to start the protests cum revolution to get rid of Assad in 2011, and which created, along with the Invasion of Iraq and Libya, the refugee problem in the first place.

Whether it was to build the Qatari pipeline (not to my mind) or just to shake out Russia's ally Assad and Tartous is irrelevant.
