No one has brought up indigenous people's day yet anywhere on ZH. I can see why this might be the case. Trying to feel good about past wrongs by renaming a .gov holiday. I was born here so am I not indigenous as well? It was a couple of weeks ago that I cut the Nez Perce trail of flight towards Canada in Montana and Idaho and really started reading on that to a much finer degree. I grew up near an Ojibwe reservation in Wisconsin. The "Trail of Tears" is near where I am now in Minnesota. Bad things happened. Inexcusable things happened.

I had to ask myself if I could ever forgive something like that happening on the US government's accord and my answer to myself was a resounding NO. The more I read and the more I thought about it the angrier I became. I have seen the reservations and I have seen the casinos. I have been through the whole treaty rights shit that was going down in the 80's when I was learning to drive and being asked for papers by the cops when the Natives were spearing.(yes, it did get that bad even back then) I grew up with an "old buck" Ojibwe who substituted for my departed father and he showed my some things that you need to know. My old buck surrogate father passed on July 23, 1987. A man of few words but I have his pre-64 model 94 Winchester sitting right behind me by his gift to me. I have killed a deer with it as well.

I know what happened to the Native Americans and I especially saw a great deal of it two weeks ago. It was an attempt at complete genocide. Even the Russian Mrs M said it must have been brutal and that is a Russian saying this who never says that anyone had harder than Russians. Think about that. We were forced to cut through Nez Perce reservation land(the current one not the original one) and it is not a thriving place. I probably should not have been there at all yet I was. For all of the casinos and such it is an economic disaster just like it is over in Wisconsin and here in Minnesota.

Being that the federal government did this to these people in the first place why would you want a federal holiday renamed after something something so ambiguous as indigenous people? If I were them, I would petition for no federal holiday at all for Columbus day. Renaming a federal holiday is not going to help correct what was so wrong about what happened. What would my "old buck" say about this crap. I know what he would say and he would say it was bullshit. What would White Bird say? I stood in White Bird Canyon.

In my heart I know that there is hate between the white man and the Native Americans but I want to point out that I am a white native American. I had no ancestors who profited from the theft of their lands or were involved in any killing of any Native Americans. There is no blood on my hands and for sure there is no blood on my wife or children's hands. We are all getting ripped off by our own people and that is the truth. I needed to know for sure and so I went with my own eyes and saw. It is not debatable that which I saw.

I respectfully submit the idea that we eliminate this federal holiday known as Columbus Day/Indigendous People Day in due fairness to all.

I would have no problem chopping Columbus Day. While the intent was to honor Columbus and his discovery - history books and schools have perverted the real story so much in today's PC world that it is better to leave it up to historians who are able to dig out the truth.

You have it. I pulled my daughter out of school to do that trip. She will never forget it. I don't know that she can understand what happened at the ripe old age of ten but she understands what happened to some degree. My four year old son, maybe not so much, but he wanted to climb a mountian so I gave it shot with him but we didn't make it very far. I am not sure if it was the mountian or the mother who stopped us. That woman was screeching that we should NOT need to climb the mountianside. I course I said that is bullshit but then she hit me with "There are no hospitals for 100 kilometers and if he falls he could die." Fucking eh, I can convert metric well enough but that part about the son possibly getting hurt kind of ruined things so I had to back down. To be honest, I had crawled far enough up that mountain for my liking but that is not what I told her.

But I learned something from Mrs.M about some plants and it was not even dope because she has never even tried dope. She found some medicinal plants in the Bitterroot Range that she can't find here but that are the same as where she is from in Russia. The whole trip was great if brief. I believe in seeing things for myself. No one can ever take actually being somewhere away from you. I saw it with my own eyes and I was right there and there isn't anything anyone can say now is there? I know what I saw and no one is telling me anything different.

That is a real education for the kids.

To your point NoWay, and not making excuses for Columbus and crew, but the Spanish were grossed out too. The Carib Indians were often doing very grotesque cannibal things. Raising, trading capons, etc. The word English word, 'cannibal' is derived from Carib.

I plussed you for that because I could not find any holes in what you asserted. What you said is true as far as I can tell. I'm not sure the direction you were headed but I see no animosity and that is what we realy need. Some folks just know things that other's don't. If I sat and read all day long, and I often do, I would not be smarter than anyone else but rather more informed. The only thing that matters is experience.

I think his internal PR handlers initially thought his golf obsession, which is also designed to get him out of the house from Moochelle, could be sold as a sign that he is a dickhead in the know who swims in the reviers of caucasian power. it certainly backfired on him. He still plays constantly, but they don't seem to highlight it anymore in the news.
