"Mommy, Am I Gonna Die?": Cop Aims For Dog, Shoots 4 Year Old, After Injured Mom Calls 911

Tyler Durden's picture

To Protect and Serve? When Whitehill resident Andrea accidentally cut her arm on glass, her sister frantically called 911, "I need a paramedic." Columbus Police Officer Jon Thomas responded to the house where he pulled out his gun and shot toward the family's dog (which he claims ran toward him), missed, and hit Andrea's four-year-old daughter Ava in the leg, shattering her bone.

As The Columbus Dispatch reports, Andrea also revealed that the cop never apologized or asked if Ava was okay and immediately left after shooting her.

A Columbus police officer accidentally wounded a 4-year-old girl in Whitehall on Friday when he fired at a charging dog, police said.

A neighbor and the girl’s uncle identified her as Ava Ellis, who was taken to Nationwide Children’s Hospital, where police said she was in stable condition.

The officer was at a house in the 4100 block of Chandler Drive investigating a hit-and-run case about 3:10 p.m., Columbus police spokeswoman Denise Alex-Bouzounis said.

As the officer was walking from the home to his patrol car, a woman a few houses away called out to him, saying her sister and the girl’s mother, Andrea Ellis, had cut herself.

The officer was at the doorway when a dog charged at him, Alex-Bouzounis said.

The officer fired once, missing the animal but striking the girl in the right leg. It was unclear whether the girl was hit directly or by a ricochet. The officer has not been identified.

Neighbors say the officer walked back to his patrol car after the shooting.

“He seemed a little disoriented, like he was really bothered,” said Norman Jones, who called the police after hearing the shot. Columbus and Whitehall police arrived at the scene shortly afterward.

“Mommy, am I gonna die?” four-year-old Ava Ellis asked her mother.

The family created a Facebook page for Ava.

As Salon reports, her mother Andrea wrote her account of the incident in a post. She names the police officer who shot her child, Jonathan Thomas, and says that, as soon as he saw the dog, who was eight to 10 feet away from him, he fired — in the direction of her eight-year-old niece and Ava.

Officer Thomas claimed that the dog charged at him, but Andrea’s sister Brandie denies this, and says the pet was in the house when he shot at it.

Andrea also revealed that the cop never apologized or asked if the four-year-old was okay and immediately left after shooting her. Neighbors have corroborated this account. Ava’s mother wrote:

Officer Thomas then told my sister to stop yelling at him and walked back to his vehicle. Officer Thomas never said sorry, never said it was an accident, never said that he called for help or was going to call for help, never asked if Ava was ok, and never asked if he could check on Ava. Officer Thomas went back to his vehicle and started to pull away. My neighbors have even verified that he started pulling away before any help was there. Officer Thomas shot Ava and left knowing he shot Ava and not knowing the condition she was in.”

The young girl was taken to a nearby hospital, and is in stable condition. The Inquisitr reported that Ava started school in a wheelchair, and may walk with a limp for the rest of her life... and will likely forever mistrust the police...

Don't hate, it's hard as heck to hit a small dog at close range. The officer is entitled to protect himself against canine agression. CPS should be called in to investiate the squalid conditions that child lives in with that dangerous dog. Broken glass all in the house and dogs runnin a muck, amazing the poor child has lived to see four.

BTW, if you take a shot at police attack dog, you are dead regardless of whether you hit it. If you defend yourself in any way against a police attack dog and you're beat into a coma. To the government, a police attack dog has more rights than you do.

Why don't cops today have any fucking sense? I think partly it's their training and partly it's because the police have become pussified. Literally. Women don't belong on patrol. Because of the asymetrical threat they often face, the thinking has permeated the police ranks that any amount of force is justified. When police were mostly large men, they could afford to be more nonchalant when faced with threats. This is no long the way they view it.

Pittsburgh is confronting its budget woes and improving services by hiring police officera who can't protect the public but rather must be protected from the public.

Pittsburgh Police Bureau Set To Welcome First Transgender Officer

Sources confirm to KDKA’s Marty Griffin that discussions are underway to figure out how to accommodate the officer.

The officer is still in the training phase at the Pittsburgh Police academy.

“You wouldn’t want this officer to be a target out there for the general public,” says Gary Van Horn with the Delta Foundation.

Be prepared to police yourself folks. The police are less and less likely to do it for you. Most here probably do that anyway.

I'm still not very good at it. My temper gets in the way too much. I had a situation just last week with some jerk screaming obscenities at me at the gas pump. And yes, regrettably, I started screaming back. But this just makes me renew my commitment to fly as low-profile as possible and to be as non-reactive as I can be in public interactions. And as has been already stressed, don't call the cops if you can handle it yourself.

Saw a good example of this in my hometown just recently. Group of minorities fighting, 5'8" skinny young cop trying to restore order and being ignored. When the 6'6" middle aged guy with the club showed up things calmed down.

Plus, I think in the 70s people would have demanded justice for this type of thing.

The officer fired a warning shot that ruptured the beasts ear drums. I imagine that it ran off and shit itself under that car parked on blocks on the front lawn.

I know a guy that wears the bite suit for K9 officer training, I asked him one time what he would recommend for evasive action from a police dog. All he could say is when they lose control in training, all they could do is twist the collar to asphyxiate the dog.

He violated a cardinal rule of gun safety:  Be sure of your target and what's beyond it. Even if it was a pit he should have taken the bites because a little girl was in the line of fire.  His shooting her is simply inexcusable, despite it clearly being an accident.  He needs to be forced to go into another line of work.

Edited to add:  Never mind.  Maynard covered it downstream about an hour ago .

Listen to that piece of shit cop apologist in the video. The paramedics were called because a woman accidentally cut herself but the broad says "the woman who was cutting herself" as if she was nuts and by extension so was the rest of the family including the dog and the four year old.  She also says that the cop got there "at the right time" so that he could help the woman. How can you praise the timeliness of a man whose only contribution to this incident was to shoot a child?  What a bunch of thugs.

1. Don't talk to police.

Called him over because she cut her arm? WTF? Put a goddamn bandaid on it and leave the cop out of it.  When the cops are called, somebody's getting hurt. Full stop.  Just don't call them. Ever.

2. White lives don't matter.

If that little girl was black Columbus (largely black) would be on fire right now and lots of MSM cameras would be there telling us how awful and racist white people are, and why that awfulness gives the blacks license to destroy and attack whites with no consequences. Any white person who points this out is branded as racist and shamed almost out of existence.

3. Blue heroes are not subject to the same laws as the rest of us.

Anybody here want to volunteer what they think would happen to a private citizen who dischargex a firearm in city limits (illegal) , fires at a dog (animal cruelty), then misses and hits a little girl, shattering her leg and likely leaving her maimed for life? A white man especially? Attempted murder? Negligent injuring? Attempted manslaughter? A DA would be drooling at the list of felonies that could be thrown at this hypothetical poor marksman.

Re: "you were trained right..?"

My sense is that some departments are actively recruiting brainwashed ex-military, because specialized military training encourages action without thought or feeling. When the shit hits the fan, and officers face large protests, it could be a bloodbath, because ex-militroids are programmed to see the people around them as Enemy. If you want a vision of the future, turn on any major first-person-shooter video game released over the last decade.

I think it would be best to arm the citizenry, and have the police do their duties unarmed. If they run into trouble, they've got their backs covered by everyone on the block. Bet that system would be FAR more productive than what we have today.

We should make police officers proide their own professional liability insurance, like all the rest of us who work as professionals.  Police departments could reimburse them the expense, as long as the premium is within a range around the median.  A couple ridiculous incidents and a cop won't be able to get insurance.  That should be the impetus to find a more suitable line of work.

If the politicians (including Prosecutors, Chiefs of Police, Sheriffs, etc.) can't or won't lead of manage the police, maybe we should let the finance industry try its hand.  We've turned everything else in their society over to finance; why not the cops?

Somewhere along the line, police became enamored with saving their own lives before protecting the public. Firefighters never lost this distinction because they recognized that the people they save from burning buildings, though perhaps lower-class, lower-educated, and dimmer-future, were still human beings who needed saving.

Somehow, the cops of America decided that their firearm was more important to pull out and use than perhaps spend a week in the hospital from wounds from doing their job. When that happened, yep, they just pull their gun and fire.

When I was a kid, cops who visited my classroom bragged openly about having never ever, in their entire careers, unholstered their weapon. Now firing your weapon on duty is basically routine.

Sorry cops of America, I realize you have a shitty job, but you're supposed to fire LAST, not first. You're the one who is supposed to take a bullet before you fire back because that's what it means to be a public servant. That's just the fucking reality of being a public servant.

I all ready have one dead friend and another I knew well who have been killed by cops recently. My friend was just drunk in his own house, had a domestic dispute with his wife who called and soon as he opened the door he was shot with a rifle dead.

At least the other one was dealing drugs and got killed in a drug raid but still pretty sad.

In Arizona, anyone can use force, up to and including deadly force to prevent rape and murder (I'd have to look it up to be exact but it includes those). It doesn't matter who is committing the crime.

I'd have killed the cop. "He just shot my daughter. The dog was just in the way, coming to her defense. I fired and kept firing until the threat was stopped. I have no idea why he was shooting my daughter, I was trying to stop a murder, his motive was not my concern."

What many people don't know is that ove r80% of the Gestapo were just regular German police during the preceding years.

Cops don't make moral judgements about laws.  They just follow orders and enforce them.

If a law was passed in this country requiring that all people who posess any illegal substance be summarily executed, most cops would just go right along with it.

There's a big difference between human interaction and force.

Not everyone needs to be arrested. Warnings work for some people.

The problem with LEO is that they're out of touch with the communities they work in.

I'll bet most LEO can't stand their patrol. They've been taught to take charge, but don't understand the ramifications of their actions.
