Iran Sends "Thousands" Of Troops To Syria For Russian-Backed Assault On Key City

Tyler Durden's picture

As those who follow Mid-East affairs are acutely aware, the regime in Syria has enjoyed both military and financial support from Iran for the duration of the country’s civil war.

Syria cannot fall to the West if Tehran intends to preserve the regional balance of power and an Iran-friendly Damascus ensures the supply lines remain open between the IRGC and Hezbollah. Lose Syria, and suddenly, the Mid-East tide turns in favor of the Saudis and Qatar and that, clearly, is an unacceptable outcome.

That said, Iran’s role on the ground in Syria has taken some off guard of late. Perhaps it’s the fact that Tehran’s participation on the ground has become more overt even as one would imagine that Iran would be keen to not antagonize the West on the heels of the nuclear deal which has the potential to facilitate the lifting of crippling economic sanctions. The key seems to be Russia’s involvement, which effectively gives Iran’s Syrian ground operations the superpower stamp of approval.

The strategy, as we’ve noted on several occasions of late, is that Russia clears the way with aggressive aerial bombardments and then Iran, operating through either Hezbollah, Iraqi Shiite militias, and/or the IRGC sweeps in on the ground and takes care of whatever anti-regime forces may be left in the wake of the Russian airstrikes.

This has worked well thus far and now apparently, Iran has sent “thousands” of troops to Syria in preparation for an assault on Aleppo. Here’s Reuters:

A delegation of Iranian lawmakers arrived in Damascus on Wednesday in the build-up to a joint operation against insurgents in northwest Syria, and said U.S.-led efforts to fight rebels had failed.

The visit, led by the chairman of the Iranian parliament's National Security and Foreign Policy Commission, Alaeddin Boroujerdi, came as Iranian troops prepared to bolster a Syrian army offensive that two senior officials told Reuters would target rebels in Aleppo.

The attack, which the officials said would be backed by Russian air strikes, underlined the growing involvement in the civil war of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's two main allies, which has alarmed a U.S.-led coalition opposed to the president that is bombing Islamic State militants.

"The international coalition led by America has failed in the fight against terrorism. The cooperation between Syria, Iraq, Iran and Russia has been positive and successful," Boroujerdi was quoted as saying by Iran's state broadcaster IRIB as he arrived at Damascus airport.

The delegation was due to meet Assad, said officials.

Iran has sent thousands of troops into Syria in recent days to bolster the planned ground offensive in Aleppo, the two officials told Reuters.

And a bit more color

Syria's army along with Iranian and Hezbollah allies will soon launch a ground attack supported by Russian air strikes against insurgents in the Aleppo area, two senior regional officials told Reuters on Tuesday.

Control of Aleppo city and the surrounding province in the area near the Turkish border is divided among the Syrian government, insurgent groups fighting Assad and the Islamic State group that controls some rural areas near the city.

"The big battle preparations in that area are clear," said one of the officials familiar with the plans. "There is a large mobilization of the Syrian army ... elite Hezbollah fighters, and thousands of Iranians who arrived in stages in recent days."

As a reminder, Aleppo is very close to the so-called "ISIS free zone" that the US and Turkey planned to establish months ago. Here's the map:

This means that Russian and Iranian forces will be closing in on a particularly sensitive area of the country as it relates to the Syrian-Turkish border, setting the stage for more tension between Ankara and Moscow and suggesting that the Iran-Russia "nexus" is on the verge of marking yet another key milestone in the effort to restore the regime.

Bear in mind that this has all unfolded in the space of just a few weeks, and we wonder just how long it will be before the assault on Raqqa will begin, because if the ISIS capital were to fall, the end would truly be nigh for anti-regime elements operating in Syria.

There’s an interesting difference between Sunnis and Shia.

Every time Sunnis (ISIS, “moderate terriss”, Taliban, etc.) blow shit up, they scream Allow ak-Bar, or somepin’ like that.

However, Shia (Syrians, Iranians, sh-Iraqis) do it without a peep.

Is this WHY they hate each other?  ;-)

I cannot believe that Russia has any interest in trying to occupy America, they have enough issues with their own country.

Come on, America is a huge land mass and is protected on both sides by great oceans and Russia would have to cross many other countries to get there so for starters the logistics would be terrible.

You have let the propaganda muddle your thinking, it is America that is attacking many many other countries either by force or fomenting troubles.

The Syrian city of Aleppo is totally wrecked.  95% of the city has no power.  Putin noted the other day that U.S. jets blew up a power plant in Aleppo, which must be one of the last plants functioning in the city.  Obama has ordered the military (both U.S. forces and his proxy IS forces) to cleanse Aleppo of Alawites, as a favor to his Saudi war accomplices.

Let's not forget, this area where our traitorous president is making deals with the 9/11 Saudi masterminds is near the site of the Biblical Armageddon.

the biblical armageddon is not a place. the 'mountain of megiddo' doesn't exist as megiddo the town, is just a 'tell' on the PLAIN of megiddo.

something of deeper significance is pictured in the bible and if you read carefully you'll see it's not a war between nations  but Gods' war against the nations which will be worldwide. not much room at the literal megiddo for modern armies to operate let alone 'all' the major armies.

megiddo in the bible is just a symbol of the completeness of the destruction of armies that took place there in ancient times. welcome to the real new world order, without all the present governments, big business and false religion.

Speaking of Armageddon the last biblical prophesy to be fulfilled in the literal sense would be the draining of the euphrates river. revelation 16:12 And the sixth Angel poured his vessel over the great river Euphrates, and its waters dried up that the way of the Kings from the East may be prepared. The thing is syria controls the headwaters of the river and in 1981 iraq almost declared war against syria for using too much water and draining the river, so technically this is feasible. Another case in point is the Christian right in the U.S. have a vested interest in fulfilling biblical prophesy to herald in the return of the big jeebus. So these things can become self fulfilling, Drain the river to allow ground forces to cross and done prophesy fulfilled. all the wackadoos will think rapture is near and will abandon their posts. No need to solve the worlds problems jeezus with fix it when he gets here /sarc.

while i agree that the misled 'wackadoos' are capable of anything to support their view including fomenting constant turmoil in the middle east, rev 16:12 isn't literal. in revelation 'waters' signify people or support they give. when ancient cyrus 'dried up' the euphrates he cut off the support or protective waters of babylon allowing for its fall. this sixth bowl is an expression of God's judgement against a modern 'babylon the great' described in revelation and drying up it's waters or support is a precursor to it's downfall. just as ancient babylon was the center of false religion, (almost avery form of religious belief against the bible can trace its roots directly back to babylon) all worldwide false religion with christendon at its head will be destroyed soon as seen by drying up of its memberships.

Scorched earth policy.  If the city is taken back then the US and msm will claim Russia did all the damage.  Russia should be getting photo's of current conditions into the news to show they are on a mission of rescue for the people.

Raqqa is interesting.  It is away from the western and northern areas Russia seems most interested in and moves operations more to the interior.  And it would set the stage for retaking the water resources the map seems to indicate ISIS took control of.  Will the US have it's proxy blow up dams as part of the scorched earth policy?

No, they still believe there were people in Iraq who were involved.  Now al Quaeda, ISIS and others are all grouped into one in their minds and they are associated with 911 to them.   Any group over there who the govt says are terrorist they accept as fact.  They do not even notice how groups go from friendly designation, to moderate to radical to extremist and back.  They do not even notice McCain meeting with them, or rather they no longer care.

Russian air cover allows the Iranians and Hezbollah units to go on a sustained offensive without worrying about being bombed and strafed by the USAF.  Otherwise, I don't think they could pull this off.  U.S. planes would probably attack a ground offensive, while the MSM would portray the attack as if it was being aimed at ISIS.

"one would imagine that Iran would be keen to not antagonize the West on the heels of the nuclear deal which has the potential to facilitate the lifting of crippling economic sanctions."

The Iranians know that Obama is fully committed to it's passage.  It doesn't matter what they do now.  They could piss on Obama's shoe and he'd still support the deal because it is IMPOSSIBLE for him to backtrack from the position he's taken.  And, frankly, if it doesn't pass Iran hasn't lost anything anyway- their situation would be unchanged.

I wonder how hard the Mullahs laugh when Obama brings his weak-ass game and asks them "Pretty please with sugar on top, stop chanting 'death to America' while I work on getting this deal done."  I bet they almost fall out of their chairs.

“Israel can shape its strategic environment, in cooperation with Turkey and Jordan, by weakening, containing, and even rolling back Syria. This effort can focus on removing Saddam Hussein from power in Iraq — an important Israeli strategic objective in its own right — as a means of foiling Syria’s regional ambitions.” “Most important, it is understandable that Israel has an interest supporting diplomatically, militarily and operationally Turkey’s and Jordan’s actions against Syria, such as securing tribal alliances with Arab tribes that cross into Syrian territory and are hostile to the Syrian ruling elite.”

The Russians need to cut ISIS off from Turkey.  That will kill the overland route for supplies, recruits and retreat.  Then they will drive them east toward Raqqa.  ISIS only options will be to flee into Iraq (and more Iranian strength) or south to KSA or possibly Jordan.  I don't see Jordan lasting long if they allow ISIS in.  KSA could be forced to admit that either they cannot stop ISIS' retreat or they don't want to.  Either way is bad for them.

Iran lost several high ranked commanders within last several days. Don’t even want to know what’s happening with "normal" soldiers. Syria is getting graveyard for Hezbollah, Iran, potentially Russians and of course tonnes of islamist garbage.

Those thousands won’t be enough to change frontlines in Aleppo. Even after days of Russian bombardment Assadist just reconquerred 2 or 3 villages.

Wed, 10/14/2015 - 08:02 | 6666273 NubianSundance

With depleted ammo resources on one side and air superiority on the other several thousand should suffice as half of Aleppo is already in government hands. This is not Stalingrad where the Russians were able to resupply by river.

Assad has air supperiority since day one... But using air force in urban battle is best way to increase rebel army supporters. Assad also controls half of aleppo since one year or so, but didn't make any advances since then. Rebels have anough ammo... Enough for those "thousands" ;)

In other words: you can't simply come to predominantly sunni country with couple of thousands of shia fighters and hope that you can control it.

Am I the only one who heard about 50 tonnes of ammo dropped by US in northern Syria? US, Turkey, Saudis etc. are still there, border with Turkey is as transparent as it was, Aleppo isn't besieged (actually Assads forces are almost encircled in the region, not otherwise). So in your opinion Russia is going to hit every truck loaded with ammo, coming from Turkey?

I am also wondering what the Russians, Iranians and Alawites are planning on 'doing' with the Sunni population of Syria.

Isn't ethnic cleansing the end game here?

This looks like a hard Northern cap on the Sunnis, and a territorial wedge between Turkey and the ISU (Israeli/Saudi/USA) area.

Bad news for the Sunni townsfolk.  Maybe the Kingdom can handle a couple of million new Sunni Arab subjects.  But I bet they are not as attractive for slave labor as the Filipinos, Indians, Ghanaians etc. that the Saudis are used to holding.

That what you get for reading a tabloid.

What you see is a new piece of russian equipment called a TOR heavy flamethrower launching missles. Gee, Napalm rockets why did'nt we think of that? Got any Marshmallows?

You see the Geneva convention feels that getting burnt to a crisp is is infinitely better and more humane that being blown to bits. lol

your clue should have been that a cluster bomb falls from the sky from a plane.

Yes but that is not really clear from the footage cause it breaks and continues somewhere else. First part shows -to me at least- some missiles being fired that then explode on the ground. Second part could be cluster bombs. Or not. Could be a propaganda piece to accuse Russia of using cluster bombs. Not that the average commenter on DM really cares. Who says it is Syria anyway? Can't make out the distinctive accent when allah snackbar is being shouted, lol.

Sorry I didn't see the second part, does look like cluster (kinda, usually they are more explosive and violent being a bomb) or grad strike hard to tell. Russians have grad and smerch munitions with cassettes full of metal like nails. Lots of doctored compilation type footing out there. Who knows

The reason why Russia has been successful is that they are closely coordinating their air support with the Syrian army, Hezbollah fighters, Iranian troops. For an update, see: www.rt.com/news/318643-syria-russian-jets-aleppo

Hezbollah is very capable of defending themselves. Just ask Israel. As Eric Draitser has pointed out, the US has never wanted to eliminate ISIS/ISIL/Daesh and related groups, rather they want to “manage” them to destabilize Syria and remove Assad.

Just for the record :

Started by Iraq dictator Saddam Hussein in September 1980, the war was marked by indiscriminate ballistic-missile attacks, extensive use of chemical weapons and attacks on third-country oil tankers in the Persian Gulf. Although Iraq was forced on the strategic defensive, Iran was unable to reconstitute effective armored formations for its air force and could not penetrate Iraq’s borders deeply enough to achieve decisive results. The end came in July 1988 with the acceptance UN Resolution 598." (history.com)

As for " Iraq is getting their ass whipped by ISIS" who pulled Iraq to pieces in 2003? Iraq is slowly getting back on its feet by recognising who its enemy is.
