Stephen Hawking Warns About The Greatest Threat To Humanity

Stephen Hawking has been outspoken in recent years about the catastrophic dangers humanity faces in the 21st century. He said we should be cautious in attempting to contact aliens, warning that advanced extraterrestrial life may not be friendly toward us and could destroy the human race. He also stated we should be cautious in creating strong artificial intelligence. The renowned physicist joined Tesla’s Elon Musk, Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, and Google executive Demis Hassabis in signing a letter that warned against a military artificial intelligence arms race.
Hawking even issued a warning to the scientists at the European Center for Nuclear Research (CERN) about the dangers of the Higgs Boson “God Particle,” claiming it could initiate “catastrophic vacuum decay” — a quantum bubble that expands at the speed of light and wipes out the universe.
Recently, Hawking addressed the threat he says may be more far more dangerous to the future of human civilization than robots, aliens, or quantum particles: capitalist greed. During a Reddit AMA, he argued that the future is wrought with the peril of rampant inequality expedited by an automated machine-based global economic system.
“If machines produce everything we need, the outcome will depend on how things are distributed.” Hawking continued, “Everyone can enjoy a life of luxurious leisure if the machine-produced wealth is shared, or most people can end up miserably poor if the machine-owners successfully lobby against wealth redistribution. So far, the trend seems to be toward the second option, with technology driving ever-increasing inequality.”
Predictably, a dramatic response thread followed. Many commenters agreed with Hawking and denounced the globalist oligarchy that is currently consolidating wealth at an unprecedented rate. Responses ranged from calls for a “bloody revolution” to references to the recent films Elysium, Wall-E, and Zeitgeist 2: Addendum. One commenter invoked the anarcho-syndicalist political views of linguist Noam Chomsky.
The main theme of the discussion centered around the automation of labor and how that would affect the human workforce and the global economy. Hawking seems to believe that our current trajectory will make such automation a death knell for the working classes, with the bourgeoisie machine owners exerting total economic control over human civilization.
One commenter strongly disagreed with Hawking, referencing recent Journal of Economic Perspective articles and claiming “technology has never, will never, and simply cannot result in structural unemployment.”
The comment thread is a treasure trove of wide-ranging ideas that include:

- A “universal basic income”

As we recently noted, Stephen Hawking is undoubtedly a nice man and a genius in his field. This is probably also the field he should stick with. Anyway, we can lay his worries to rest: once there is no longer scarcity in the world, nobody will have reason to worry about wealth redistribution. Of course, it’s also not going to happen anytime soon and probably never will. There is also no reason to worry about employment while at least vestiges of a free market exist: as long as there remain unsatisfied human wants and as long as there are more resources than people, everybody will find work. The only real problem is government intervention in the market process.

It is truly remarkable how deeply embedded socialist thought remains in society to this day, in spite of the downfall of the socialist Prison State in the late 1980s/early 1990s, after its utter bankruptcy could no longer be concealed (as an aside, we plan to soon post another article on the enduring popularity of collectivism, a phenomenon that strikes us as more than passing strange). Thus yet another popular and renowned physicist, namely Stephen Hawkins, has jumped into the debate, seemingly attacking capitalism. To paraphrase Albert Jay Nock, it is downright absurd that socialist ideas are still so unquestioningly accepted that one is actually forced to discuss and defend capitalism, as if there were any other type of economy! An economy cannot be anything but capitalistic; without economic calculation, there is simply no rational economy to discuss. It makes no sense to call any other system an “economy”.
It follows that the only people who have reason to discuss the viability of the capitalist system are those who want to return to a hunter-gatherer lifestyle. But they can do that without trying to enforce their nonsense on anyone else. Surely there is enough room in the Amazon forest. If a handful of morons eager to shun civilization want to ship themselves there, we imagine no-one would object (such as e.g. the insane eco death-cult of Paul Kingsnorth in the UK; they probably wouldn’t do it though, due to the lack of wall plugs needed to recharge the batteries of their iPhones).

Not advocating one side or the other, but I find it simple minded to categorize the future economies with the thoughtless labels of "socialism" "capitalism" etc. We are reaching a point of technological capability that has never been seen before in the history of the known world. You, me, nor anyone else truly knows what lies ahead when it comes to technology and the ability to provide society with its needs. To stomp it out with the evil "socialism" or "capitalism" labels before it even arrives is doing a great disservice to our future generations. I ask that you open your minds so that my daughter, your daughter and everyone else's children and grandchildren don't have to live in such a heartless, nonsensical world dominated by the greed to possess and control as much things and as many people as possible. There aren't two sides, by the way -- there are <n> sides. That's just how those with power prefer it. Almost everyone is distracted by incoherent argumentation. "When they're fighting each other, they aren't fighting you."
Really? Are you really this stupid? The case been made is that once production and distribution is 100% automated and AI reaches the point were it can pass a Turing test, there will be no more need for humans. If everything that you currently do to earn money can be done better and cheaper by a machine, you will be let go. And yes, I am aware that for a bankster exponential growth scenario to "work" there must be consumers for all the production. Yet, those who own the machines (banksters indirectly or at taht point directly) can and will curtail production (in the name of saving the planet) to the minimum needed to prevent armed rebellion by the peasants (and in some cases using famine and scarcity as a weapon) and produce only what they and their families need/desire. You will have a marked division between the "elite" (those who own all the machines) and the rest. The elite will have their machines produce plenty, from the resources that are left, for themselves while providing minimal sustenance ( in the name of charity) to keep the proles in the reservations.

The earliest documented markets were the Sumerian temples. They used credit records (denominated in silver, but little actual silver was traded) to buy and sell goods and services to the surrounding communities. All thru history, wherever a market is found it is a state creation. In all tribal and clan societies, trade was done via human economies of personal credit (I gift you the potatoes you need today and you gift me some antelope meat that you harvested tomorrow). No actual markets exist. Only when those who you trade with can not be trusted does barter occur and this is in lieu of open warfare. Within those who you can trust there is no market.
The idea of having a market without government intervention is as naive as death without decay.
Think about it. Do you leave a $100 by your bedside the nights your wife ( or husband) has sex with you? Does she hand you a menu and charges you money if she cooks? Are your children paying you rent? If your Mom drops by for a visit, is she expected to pay room and board? No, all those human economy exchanges are done voluntarily as gifts to one another. Is only when the state is involved that markets become necessary.

Ironically, he fails to overlook the possibility that an advanced civilization or an AI might actually save Mankind from itself, and the planet from mankind. What is manifesting today is a magician's parlor trick of illusion that informs us all that nothing is as it appears to be. Every Economist in the entire world knows that the fundamentals (quanta) of Economics proper are broken. When you are dealing with busted quanta on a quantum level of interactions, you are working with no perspective other than what might fix the broken quanta, if you happen to be that bright. In brief, not one fucking Economist in the entire world understands how Quantum Behavioural Economics functions on a molecular level aside from myself. And I am not an Economist.
Professor Hawking should be most worried about the funding that the Perimeter Institute is about to lose above, and beyond, the monsters in his consciousness. Professor Hawking should understand on a basic level of mathematics that once Ponzi schemes implode you cannot puff them up to look like they are functioning. In other words, Dr. Hawking, imploding Ponzi schemes tell no lies to the man on the omnibus, or a casual observer.
AI will never be in control of much other than a few coordinated simple routines. Numerical Control takes us back to simple machine language ASCII, and that morphed into Computerized Numerical Control CNC. Each progression in machine language terms advances on a fundamental level, but it never approximates complex thought, thinking, or decision making. Computationally, computer assisted calculations simply speed up processing allowing decision making to take place. Quantitatively, computers do quite well, but qualitatively, computer assisted decision making is contingent upon the quality of the inputs. The human brain has been advancing in ability for an indeterminate amount of time compared with that of machine language which started in the Second World War. Robotics manufacturing will not advance past simple machine learning until researchers are utilizing quantum computing, and that has not been advanced yet past the theoretical stage IMHO. Presently, the NSA is attempting to advance quantum computing, but their progress is not there. Given the fact that the Government of the USA is insolvent, it is more likely that the NSA will lose their funding to keep investing in quantum computing sometime over the course of economic implosion in the USA that we are all witnessing these days.

The article above appeared to me as kinds of head-on collisions of bullshit trains. So-called "capitalist greed" is NOT the problem, but rather the WRONG LABEL. The problem is the excessive successfulness of society being effectively controlled by the principles and methods of organized crime, in ways which require the vast majority of people to NOT understand that, because they have been conditioned to NOT want to understand that the necessarily central systems are the death control systems, with the murder systems as the most extreme form of those, which in turn back up the combined money/murder systems.
I believe that physical science and political science should be reconciled. However, actually doing that results in demonstrating that civilization necessarily operates according to the principles and methods of organized crime, while all of the various "isms" end up primarily becoming bullshit to bury that essential social fact under.
Although "free market capitalism" abstractly appears to most closely approach how natural selection systems have operated, it can not be fully understood until after one adds fraud and murder into that "free market capitalism," after which that "ism" looks nothing like what it theoretically is supposed to be, but rather, becomes more like what actually exists now, namely that governments are the biggest forms of organized crime, controlled by the best organized gangs of criminals.
Nothing has ever existed in human history that was ever remotely close to the dictionary definitions of socialism or communism. Furthermore, the existing social facts about how governments ENFORCE FRAUDS by privately controlled banks, around which public "money" supply have grown up various corporations, also have almost no relationship to the dictionary definitions of how "free market capitalism" is supposed to work. Banks making "money" out of nothing as debts is like making "capital" out of nothing, which effectively destroys the idealized concept of "capital."
The essential stupidity in the conclusion of the article above was:
Governments were developed through the history of warfare, as the outcome of the de facto "free market in murder." Upon that basis, the best organized gangsters, the banksters, were able to capture control over the public powers of governments, through persistent and prolonged applications of the principles and methods of organized crime to the political processes. The notions of producing and/or saving, in order to produce more, are eroded and undermined by the defrauding, whereby the public "money" supplies are made out of nothing, as debts, in order to pay for strip-mining the planet's natural resources. The triumphant, runaway, government ENFORCED FRAUDS by privately controlled banks, are systematically destroying the producers and/or savers, since the "money" which was supposed to represent "capital" is more and more being made out of nothing as debts.
That monetary system has become like parasites killing their host, or like a metastasized cancer which became untreatable and inoperable, due to society becoming terminally sick and insane, due to the social successfulness of organized crime, driving runaway criminal insanities, within a political economy which still pretends that it operates as "free market capitalism" in which production and saving to produce more is the basis of "wealth," while "wealth" for the oligarchical plutocracy is being able to dominate POLITICAL FUNDING ENFORCING FRAUDS.
Most physical scientists are astonishingly naive when it comes to politics. They tend to fail to recognize the degree to which the dominate philosophy of science was forced to compromise with the biggest bullies' bullshit world views. While it is theoretically possible to better reconcile physical science with political science, doing that necessarily results in developing the theories that explain the empirical social facts, that governments are the biggest forms of organized crime, controlled by the best organized gangs of criminals. Therefore, progress in political science results in a head-on collisions with how and why civilization is controlled by systems of backing up lies with violence, which are socially successful to the degree that those facts are not faced and admitted.

All public discussions about political economy tend to become utter bullshit, because everyone was proportionately successful within the established ENFORCED FRAUDS by becoming the best available professional liars and immaculate hypocrites. The intense paradoxes are that what human being should debate are their death control systems, that back up their debt control systems, however, since the existing systems became most socially successful by becoming the most deceitful and fraudulent, it is politically impossible to have any relatively rational public debates about those issues. Rather, what is typical is the kind of article above, which drowns under the bullshit that it takes for granted, (which was also the same kind of bullshit that those physicists were also continuing to take for granted.)

Human beings and civilization operate as entropic pumps of environmental energy flows, which manifest as ENFORCED FRAUDS, which have become based on the maximum possible attitudes of deliberate ignorance towards the principle of the conservation of energy, and the maximum possible deliberate misunderstanding of the concept of entropy, so that we are now living inside of Wonderland Matrix Bizarro Worlds, where everything is as absurdly backwards as possible, since governments are necessarily the biggest forms of organized crime, controlled by the best organized gangs of criminals, while their social successfulness is based upon them being able to get away with their denials of that.
On Zero Hedge, the typical articles and comments somewhat present the social facts that reveal how governments ENFORCE FRAUDS by privately controlled banks, which became the systems upon which the rest of the political economy, dominated by corporations, developed. However, mostly the content on Zero Hedge then continues to collapse back to the same old-fashioned bullshit, based upon false fundamental dichotomies, and therefore, proposes bogus "solutions" based upon impossible ideals.
The article above sets up straw man arguments:
Money is measurement backed by murder, as the most abstract form of private property being based on backing up claims with coercions. There is NO way to understand the actual "political economy" outside of the actual "human ecology," which means that not only ARE the debt controls backed by the death controls, but that they must necessarily be. The supreme ideology is militarism, which has economics operating inside of that. Since military success was based on backing up deceits with destruction, financial success became backing up frauds with force. THAT PRIMARILY WORKS THROUGH THE VICIOUS SPIRALS OF POLITICAL FUNDING ENFORCING FRAUDS.
To reconcile physical science with political science requires recognizing that there is only one energy, and therefore, only one political system, which manifests as fractal patterns of the principles and methods of organized crime, where the death controls are always necessarily central to everything else. People who promote "free market capitalism" tend to deliberately ignore the history of warfare, being the de facto "free market in murder." Furthermore, they also tend to not address what sort of alternative death control systems would work through their so-called "free market capitalism," given that all private property is based upon backing up claims with coercions, while money is measurement backed by murder.
The BIG PROBLEM is how to operate the human murder systems after the development of weapons of mass destruction. So far, there are no good answers to that PROBLEM, but only runaway social psychoses. Prodigious progress in physical science, which has enabled the mathematical physics in areas like quantum mechanics and the special theory of relativity, have been channeled through social pyramid systems based upon backing up lies with violence, to become ENFORCED FRAUDS, that now take the form of globalized electronic frauds, backed by the threat of force from atomic bombs.
The physicists who enabled those technologies to be developed tended to continue to be incompetent political idiots, outside of their specialized fields of study. It would take series of intellectual scientific revolutions, whereby there were profound paradigm shifts in political science, that integrated and surpassed those paradigm shifts already achieved in physical science, in order for political science to advance. However, we are running out of time for such processes of paradigm shifts to occur, since those used to take several generations to happen in the past. At the present time, the human artificial selection systems, based on the maximum possible deceits and frauds, are being pumped up and UP at an exponential rate by progress in physical science and technology, while nothing remotely like that is allowed to happen within political science. Rather, politics continues being dominated by various old-fashioned religions and ideologies, that are nothing more than the various layers of controlled opposition that surrounded the core of organized crime.
Progress in political science would necessarily have to become progress in understanding and applying the principles and methods of organized crime, because progress in politics would necessarily have to become better death control systems, to back up better debt control control systems. All of that should be done by better understanding of how human artificial selection system fit inside of natural selection systems. However, at the present time, all of that is politically impossible. Instead, the established systems of debt slavery have generated numbers which have become debt insanities, which are going to provoke death insanities ... while the vast majority of people do not understand that, because they have been successfully conditioned to feel like they do not want to understand that ...
I believe that almost all significant domestic, as well as geopolitical, current events track back to the banksters and their buddies, "Deep State," including that the so-called "War on Terror" was originally started by their inside job, false flag attacks. That has become an increasingly hyper-complicated situation, where there are level after level of more or less hidden organized crime gangs, which are controlling governments. In my view, their agenda has become that of psychotic psychopaths, whose longer term goals are based upon morbid habits which have become runaway criminal insanities. THAT IS THE UNDERLYING NATURE OF THE SO-CALLED "CAPITALIST GREED."
My view is that the historical sequences of covertly controlling civilization through being able to back up lies with violence has resulted in the covert control of civilization by its Deep State, who are developed as the best organized gangsters, whose excessive successfulness has driven civilization as a whole to manifest runaway criminal insanities, because of the vicious feedback loops between POLITICAL FUNDING ENFORCING FRAUDS.
Meanwhile, all other "ISMS" tend to continue to be BULLSHIT-BASED. The supreme ideology is necessarily militarism, because that is the ideology of the murder system, which is the most important, central core to all other sociopolitical systems. The intense paradoxes that civilization faces are due to the degree to which it has become an oxymoronic scientific dictatorship, which is applying science and technology to become better at backing up lies with violence, within social pryamid systems, that were always based upon being able to back up lies with violence, which always had their flip sides that the people thereby being controlled adapted to become ignorant and afraid.
Throughout known human history, the greatest threats to some human beings have always been other human beings. That continues to be the case, especially because those are the only threats which are theoretically possible to perhaps respond to in any effective ways. (There are large lists of possible mega-disasters which could be caused by factors beyond human control.) Moreover, it is clear that human beings are increasingly becoming their own worst enemies, by developing science and technologies which are developed in order to get better at backing up lies with violence.
The essential problems with respect to scientific progress is that would have to address the essential issues, which are the human murder systems, as the most extreme manifestations of the overall death control systems, which together form artificial selection systems, that were made and maintained by the infinitely bigger natural selection systems. THOSE ESSENTIAL PROBLEMS ARE INTENSELY PARADOXICAL DUE TO THE HISTORY OF THE MOST SOCIALLY SUCCESSFUL MURDER SYSTEMS BECOMING BASED UPON THE GREATEST DECEITS AND TREACHERIES.
That was how and why civilization developed upon the basis of the biggest bullies' bullshit social stories becoming dominate, within which context terms like "capitalism versus socialism" etc., are ALL BULLSHIT-BASED. While the biological evolution of genes may be relatively slow, the cultural evolution of memes has become exponentially fast. There was nothing like global electronic communications, nor atomic bombs, back when the Bible was written and edited.
Moreover, some of the most astonishing potentials that have been developed through advances in biology are the technological means to directly change genes, which therefore provide the possibilities for positive feedback loops between memes and genes, whereby cultural evolution could theoretically start to more directly and deliberately drive biological evolution, in ways which would otherwise be impossible for biological evolution by itself to ordinarily do.
Nothing in old-fashioned religions provides anything more than some raw ore which could be smelted to develop different grades of more refined moralities. Old-fashioned metaphysics, based on taking for granted old-fashioned physics, can NOT cope with the progress made in physical science, including biology. From within that context, I find assertions that the Bible and Christianity are still useful to be laughable.
Rather, what we should do is develop creative syntheses between ancient mysticism and post-modernizing science. We should go way back before the Bible in the past, in order to go way beyond the Bible in the future ... However, at the present time, human beings adapting to the demonstrably significant progress in physical science appears to be politically impossible, mostly because actual politics is still dominated by old-fashioned religions and ideologies.

I wanted to involve my kids as much as possible in the final space shuttle flights. One side-event I happened to catch was the lead guy on the "AMS-02", Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer, discussing this, as I recall, hugely expensive (~$2B) piece of equipment. I could feel the excitement from his words. I still don't know WTF "dark matter" or "antimatter" is all about but it sounded like super nifty stuff the way he was talking about it.

I am one of the biggest tin foil hat wearers here so naturally I have always been suspicious of Hawking. As soon as one is labeled one of the/ the smartest person by the establishment I expect for them to eventually knowingly promote something that is a farce. Regarding Hawkings statements on ET life, and despite my enormous tin foil hat, I can't believe in little green men until I see one. Although there has to be at least moss growing somewhere out there and having our own behavior as the only guage from which to judge behavior by we probably shouldn't be inviting others to the party, just in case. This isn't brilliance in action it's common sense.
His points on AI being a detriment to the rest of us when corruption is endemic is a no brainer, everything of advantage will benefit those on the top under the current circumstances.
