A couple of weeks after the ID vanishes from the company directory, a "system" account logs into various databases and simply changes a couple of values, at random. Once per week. Same for DOC files and spreadsheets on file servers. Especially adding and removing the word "not".
Your way, they lose 1 day and restore from the last backup. The alternative way, their data becomes increasingly corrupt over time, corrupting all the backups as they go. It's a much more difficult problem to detect and fix.

You're absolutely spot on. Back in the 80s I was writing payroll software for a company that screwed me over by not paying my pension contributions into my pension scheme. Bad move. I changed the weekly payroll calculation routine that rounded totals up by 0.005 pence to 0.05 pence and handed in my resignation. Nobody was going to notice an extra few pennies in their paycheck and anybody looking through the code would likely not spot the 'error'. Multiply that by the number of employees across all the companies that bought our payroll software and at year-end when the companies had to submit their totals to the tax office a shit storm ensued. Company folded the following year. Not before I got my pension money back though. Mission accomplished.
Looks like we gots ourselves a real life Office Space movie going on.
Expect to see lots of this in the coming months/years. You can't replace engineers with decades of experience with cheap labor straight out of college (or from India) and expect the systems to run themselves.

I'm sure they do. 'Back in the day' AT&T spent a TON of money installing a "smart network", then layed off all the more experienced/high payed engineers. Less than a year later they hired most of them back at a premium because the network was smarter than the tech's they had left. The more things change, the more they stay the same. MBA's think they can replace knowledge and skill with "process". Never works.
The dis-function in govenment has alredy proven the point.

It doesn't exactly work that way. I have been a software engineer for 15+ years. You can work for a company that solves real problems, creates useful software, or you can go work for the Twitters, FaceBooks, major league sports, and porn sites. The choice is yours.
Once you reach a certain maturity, you realize that you need to pick the more stable companies with a minimum number of assholes and sales people running things; instead of the one paying the highest salary packages.
"Do nothing" IT workers? Unheard of. Know nothing H1-B's? Well now you are talking.
