NATO Member Turkey Shoots Down Drone Of Unknown Origin On Border With Syria

Tyler Durden's picture

Over the course of Russia’s involvement in Syria, the tension between Moscow and Ankara has grown steadily.

In short, NATO-member Turkey has accused Russian fighter jets of violating its airspace as they buzz the border on the way to hitting anti-regime targets. The escalation of hostilities between the two countries now threatens to derail billions in trade and energy deals as Erdogan recently warned Putin that Ankara may go elsewhere for its natural gas needs.

Ultimately, it isn’t about Turkey’s airspace. It’s about Ankara wanting Assad gone and Moscow wanting Assad to remain in power and indeed, the US is already using a Turkish air base as a kind of forward operating center for bombing runs, meaning NATO may well use Turkey to float conflict trial balloons to see just what the West can get away with in terms of challenging the Russians in Syria (incidentally, Erdogan has an election coming up in two weeks and a key part of the push to restore AKP's absolute majority in parliament is scaring the public into believing that Turkey is under attack and only a strong government can save it). And here's proof of that assessment:

  • US OFFICIAL SAYS SUSPECTS DRONE WAS A RUSSIAN DRONE: RTRS
  • UNITED STATES SUSPECTS THAT PLANE SHOT DOWN BY TURKEY WAS A RUSSIAN DRONE AIRCRAFT - U.S. OFFICIAL TELLS REUTERS

With that in mind, consider that just moments ago, Turkey shot down an unmanned drone that Ankara says violated its airspace:

  • TURKEY MILITARY SAYS SHOT DOWN AIRCRAFT AT SYRIA BORDER
  • TURKEY'S NTV SAYS SHOT-DOWN AIRCRAFT WAS UNMANNED DRONE

And here's the official statement (Google translated):

Today nationalities in our country's airspace at the border with Syria has been detected an unknown aircraft, although be warned three times on continuing to move our aircraft performing patrols on the border by the rules of engagement it has been reduced by fire in the frame.

Turkish Armed Forces is implementing with determination in the framework of the duties assigned to rules of engagement. "

Meanwhile, it was determined that lowering the unmanned vehicle.

Russian planes had previously violated the Syrian border Turkish airspace.

Yes, it has been "reduced by fire in the frame."

So basically, Turkey just shot down a Russian drone. Or at least that's the way it looks, as it would be peculiar if the Turkish army somehow didn't know the locations of US drones in the region.

From Russia with love:

  • RUSSIA SAYS DRONES IN SYRIA FUNCTIONING NORMALLY: RIA
  • RUSSIA SAYS ALL PLANES IN SYRIA RETURNED TO BASE: RIA

The lira and the ruble are not happy:

  • RUBLE EXTENDS DECLINES AGAINST DOLLAR, DROPS 1.1%
  • LIRA EXTENDS LOSS VS DOLLAR AFTER STATEMENT FROM TURKEY ARMY

Look out, because this may very well be the event that takes the "proxy" out of Syria's proxy war. All eyes on what, if anything, Moscow - and NATO - will respond with.

Here are the images from the scene, one of which apparently shows part of the wreckage:

Here is a very interesting and brief article by Thierry Meyssan, "NATO refuses to get involved in the secret war between Turkey and Russia" (Google translate if you don't read French, German, Spanish or Arabic).

In summary, NATO refused during its meeting on 8 October 2015 to keep Patriot missiles at the Turkish-Syrian border, and how's that relevant.

Joke,  Russia will not claim it was theirs.  It was probably worth losing for the intel it gathered.

So if it was not Russian and not US it must be from Ukraine.

Drones are expendable and do not have evasion programing, chaf or flares.  They might be able to evade but then they would have to add other sensors.

If Russian, then they may simply be testing Turkey's defensive perimeter.  A few probes and they learn a lot about the other side's strengths and weaknesses.  No telling how many other drones have made cross-border runs and not been detected.  Getting  peeks a few miles on the other side of of the border also provides great intel, as noted by Payne above.

Sure looks like a Russian Orlan-10 drone.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orlan-10
It is simply upside down in the photo, as you can tell from the location of the propeller (the hub of which is shiny).
Btw, its RC-plane sized. Small in the world of drone aircraft.  Launched from a small catapult.
Newer production ones have a split tail, like the old US Mitchel B-25 bomber.

What's unlikely about Russia using drones in the area for reconnaissance anyway?

What's interesting to me is the crude build of the thing--bet it isn't a multi-million dollar expense per plane for the Russians. Good old commonsense use of resources . . . 'course, you'd like them to not be shot the fuck down in any case.

No expert here, but radar wouldn't pick up something this small, right?  But, if so, then why would it be flying low enough to be spotted?

Amraphel,

You can have guns in Russia and it supposedly takes about 5-10 days for a foreigner to be approved to carry.  Russians are becoming more lenient with firearms likely for the same reason the US colonies were.

"The law broadly defines self-defense weapons, including smoothbore long barrelled guns, pistols, revolvers, and other firearms, as well as Tasers, and devices equipped with teargas. Long barrelled fire arms and edged weapons are, however, forbidden by the law."

Why would you think that?  Many that I read seem to be a mix of pro-Israel and rah-rah U.S. MIC.  And the ones in those groups have very little to offer in the way of facts and evidence.

As has been pointed out many times, this is not a Putin love fest.  More often, it is simple disgust with what America has been doing around the world for far too long.  Some of us object to paying for all this stupid militaristic, empire building.  Some realize how badly our actions have damaged our relations with the rest of the world as the realization of what "good guy" America has morphed into.  Some have moral objections to destroying countries, even entire regions, only for the benefit of special interests.  The whole world is watching this mess in the ME play out, and the more you look, the worse America seems to be.  Blundering, feckless, arrogant, ruthless, and out of control....a danger to everyone.

I have said it before when this topic is raised about loving Putin, Russia, or any other outside influence - America right or wrong.  When right, to be kept right; when wrong, to be made right.  We need to "make America right" again, because this country has gone off the tracks with the MIC and International financiers in the drivers seat.

And as far as what I wish for, you must have a pretty severe problem with reading comprehension if you even bothered to read what I wrote.

It's not an Orlan-10. The Ukie one might be, it's in too many bits to tell. The bits of tail plane they have there are wrong for an Orlan 10 so I doubt that one as well.

Also, Orlan-10's air intake is below the propeller, and exhaust is on the left and right side. Whatever the Turks shot down has intake above the propeller and exhaust pipes at the top.

I really don’t care for the terminology. People call this a drone (but it’s technically a quadcopter and really just a toy);

http://www.bg-parks.net/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/140210-gadget-drone-1453_a8d2d5455da6d86789192edb1b120939.jpg

This is a military drone;

http://www.usnews.com/dims4/USNEWS/ae5d20f/2147483647/resize/652x%3E/quality/85/?url=%2Fcmsmedia%2Fd3%2Fdd56dff8b3364db93f0786ba87db6b%2F43931widemodern_drone_070213.jpg

Huge difference! I assume they mean a military drone was shot down. How many countries have these now? Apparently, 86 countries that have some sort of drone capability, both armed and unarmed. So assuming that it was Russian is a stretch.

You said it man. This is a joke.

Besides how is this supposed to have happened?

The turks patrol their airspace presumably with a pack of their F-16s. What is the smallest size munition that jet is able to fire? Right, 20mm M5x rounds with muzzle velocity of around 1000m/s. And now we look at that drones-r-us R/C toy above. Even one hit would disintegrate it. Any other type of ammo would disintegrate it into even smaller bits.

During my time in Istanbul I lived through plenty of two-stage-explosive-device false flags courtesy of 'By Mossad For Erdogan' conveniently close to the CIA presence in said city mind you but this story is downright comedic. Did some drunk hunters just find it in a forest? Did Erdogan's cousin's 6 year old son crash his toy into a tree and they just couldn't fucking come up with anything less ridiculous?

Laughable.

What was shot down definitely was not a quad copter, the nose cone indicates it was propellor driven, nor was it a 24/7 loitering hi-tech one, not all drones are hellfire carrying ones.

This one looks like a short ranged artillery spotting one, the UK has them in its arsenal, as for conspiracies I don't believe them here.  Here the truth is likely that it was a Russian drone, it was watching the jihadi's (now why would they be close to the border? Duh...), and it crashed/was shot down, what by is a mystery, the wings appear damaged, maybe a close range airburst?  But no shrapnel, either way the Russian military willl shrug and get number #525211 out of storage to replace it, they are practically expendable.

Politically though it is a warning shot, no doubt the Russians will tighten up their operations on the Syrian border, but until a Russian gets shot no red lines are crossed and the jihadi's will just have to accept they are still on the menu for the Russian war machine to consume, much to Turkey's frustration.

Presumes a whole lot.

Look at the size of that thing. It looks like a platoon level drone. It is obviously not a spy drone. I bet it could not remain in the air more than about 1.5 hours tops and fly more than a couple 1000 yards away from the operator at best.

This is a fucking false flag.

Good point, that will be step #2, while the US are floundering around trying to respond the the Russians and Iranians flattening the Syrian opposition we can expect to see the Syrian AA defence regenerated, first in areas where Assad has firm control, and later extending to the newly secured areas.

No doubt the idea that the US and allies cannot fly at will in all of the Syrian airspace will be seen as a humiliation, self inflicted though due to our dysfunctional policies.

"if Russians can shoot down civilian airliners"

If frog had wings...  IF.  IF.  But, no one is able to pin it on the Russians despite ALL attempts to do so.  From http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2014-07-26/flight-mh-17-black-box-reveals-...

As for the real questions the "released" black box data should reveal, they remain as follows:

i) why was the plane diverted from its traditional flight path; and

ii) what was said between the pilots and air traffic control in the minutes before the crash.

Recall that the Ukraine secret service confiscated the ATC conversation logs a week ago, and the fate of said conversations has been unknown ever since, something that Malaysian Airlines revealed to the public promptly after its other, just as infamous plane anomaly, flight MH 370 disappeared forever from radar.

Now then, we KNOW that the US has shot down civilian airliners (1988, Iranian civilian airliner).  And then there's the US govt's own conspiracy planning to shoot down one of its own fucking civilian airlines: Operation Northwoods.

I suppose there's no need to bring up the FACT that the US has a policy of "ring-fencing" Russia.

Its pretty clear that a BUK missile likely shot it down, the alternative theory peddled about a SU-25 shooting it down just shows people's ignorance regarding the performance of a ground attack aircraft and a jetliner.  Personally I have no trouble with accepting that, the idea that no one is perfect is a simple truth, only authorative regimes cannot accept their own failings.

If you put AA missiles on a 747 it would be a exceptionally better interceptor then a SU-25, this is because it can fly faster, go higher and has a longer range, that alone puts in perspective how poor the SU-25 would be in this role, in reality it is only armed with AA missiles to shoot down other slow low flying planes or helicopters.  High level bombers and airliners are just too fast and too high for them to reach.

Fri, 10/16/2015 - 11:04 | 6675114 Ace Ventura
Ace Ventura's picture

SU-25 can fly at 590 mph, plenty fast enough to track a Boeing 777 (max speed coincidentally 590 mph). True, the Frogfoot's ceiling of 24,000 ft. places it below the max ceiling of 43,000 ft. for the 777, but if memory serves MH17 was flying well below normal altitudes for an international flight?

The SU-25 is more than capable of taking down a 777, and as others have mentioned there is the question of the 30mm bullet holes in the MH17's fuselage. Even if it did not use cannon to bring down MH17, it could have used AA-2 or AA-8 air-to-air missiles....all of which are standard loadout options for the SU-25.
