Islam has a truly fundamental flaw, and I don't mean this is the same vein as "fundamentalism". I mean the foundation of the religion, for all who practice it, is flawed.
It's very simple. Mohammed made a decision. He said - paraphrasing - "We want peace, but until we can have it, we have to fight." I have talked to several muslims about this. They all agree with this phrasing.
It is designed to fail, in other words. If the philosophy you preach is based on the acceptance of violence, you will get violence. It's not that complicated.
The Torah also accepts violence (and the Koran accepts much of the Torah).
Christ, during his lifetime (this ended upon his death, when his followers reverted back to the more violent strain), appears to have said, "No. Peace now." (i.e. Turn the other cheek). Unfortunately, look what they did to him. But at least you can point to Christ and see that he made "not fighting back" (not continuing the violence) enough of a priority that he gave his own life for it. That's a very different starting point.
Buddha... now that's where it's at. A guy who lived more than 80 years (the last 40 preaching), died a non-violent natural death, and never once during his lifetime was there violence associated with his philosophy. He lived peace. A rare breed.
Back to the original point. Regardless of whether the majority of muslims say they are peaceful or not, the foundation of their religion not only permits, but in many cases recommends, using violence "in self defense". Because it's always in self-defense. Just like their enemies will claim they are acting in self-defense. Once you open the door like that, violence is part and parcel of your philosophy.
They can't have it both ways. Islam is a philosophy of violence. Tacit or active is an absolutely moot point.

You're absolutely right! Syria was a secular nation until 2011, there were no internal conflicts in Syria and Bashar al Assad enjoyed a 80+% approval rating. Washington decided to remove Assad for much the same reasons they decided to remove any other leaders of their choosing, insubordination to Washington.
