Ivy League: Perfect Scores not Good Enough for the “Wrong Race”
The Economist has run a lengthy article about Asian-Americans. It begins with a description of Michael Wang, who had a perfect score in his college entrance (ACT) exams, who was ranked second academically out of 1,002 students at his high school, who was part of a chorus that performed at Barack Obama’s inauguration, who came in third place in a national piano championship, who was in the top 150 in a national mathematics competition, and who was in several national debating-competition finals. Michael was rejected by six out of the seven Ivy League schools to which he applied. Like many other members of this “model minority,” he is no longer willing to take this quietly.
Michael Wang: too Asian and too perfect for the Ivy League schools. This is a typical example of modern-day socialism’s drive to allegedly “equalize opportunity”, a heading under which the incentive to make an effort to actually accomplish something in life is slowly but surely deadened among those showing the best abilities. Over time, it leads to decay in the population’s morals and intelligence, until you end up with a nation best compared to a ship of fools.
Asian-Americans have suffered systematic discrimination, including as recently as World War II when 120,000 Japanese Americans were interned in camps as potential “fifth columnists” while no similar actions were taken against Americans of German or Italian ancestry.
The article points out that the worst single incident of lynching in American history was actually directed against Chinese immigrants, when 17 were murdered in 1871. Yet, as anyone who has walked the campuses of MIT, Caltech, Harvard or Stanford, or any other top-flight university, can attest, Asian-Americans are massively represented (44% of the recent incoming class at Caltech, which is routinely rated the number one school in the world).
This is despite explicit discrimination which means that, as estimated by two Princeton academics, Asian-Americans need a Scholastic Aptitude Test (“SAT”) score about 140 points higher than a white candidate in order to be admitted to a private university, whereas African-Americans can have a result that is 310 points lower in order gain the same result.
Americans of Japanese ancestry are loaded on a train on their way to a concentr… sorry, internment camp in WW2.
And two University of Michigan researchers have produced a study which shows the difference is down to nothing more than hard work: they followed 6,000 white and Asian children from toddler through school. They found small differences in initial cognitive abilities and the socioeconomic status of parents, but sizable gaps in effort that eventually produce large differences in academic results.
After years of avoiding the issue, the Supreme Court has agreed to hear the case of Abigail Fisher versus the University of Texas in its next session. Ms Fisher, who is white, is suing UT over its affirmative action policies which she claims unfairly denied her a position. Her suit is backed by an amicus curiae brief submitted on behalf of 117 Asian-American organizations. This follows a lawsuit by a group of Asian students against Harvard and the University of North Carolina. Here is the gist of Harvard’s defense in this suit:
“…a class that is diverse on multiple dimensions, including on race, transforms the educational experience of students from every background and prepares our graduates for an increasingly pluralistic world…”
I suppose that this argument could be used to support the admission of almost anyone, including a few utter imbeciles since they too are part of our “pluralistic world,” although I think that Harvard restricts this policy to its professorial staff.
But more importantly, what is the message that this sends for both over- and under-achieving students? What does it teach our young about the relative merits of individual hard work versus political machinations? And, from a strictly economic perspective, what are the implications of this for American success when we deliberately hinder investment in our most promising human capital?
I have previously quoted Supreme Court Chief Justice Roberts on this subject: “The way to stop discrimination on the basis of race is to stop discrimination on the basis of race.” Let’s hope that he follows through in the Abigail Fisher case and that Justice Kennedy joins him, since we can reliable expect that the “Gang of Four” (Justices Ginsburg, Breyer, Sotomayer and Kagan) will march in lock step to whatever nonsense Obama’s Department of Justice puts forth in defense of this indefensible practice.

A university education is no longer about education in the traditional sense (working to increase your knowledge and applying that to new problems). University is now a "right". It is a vehicle to get more goodies. Going to college is now a business decision, having zero to do with increasing the sum of human knowledge, only with increasing the "economic status" of its graduates.

We need to realize that the old concept of universities - places where human knowledge was increased and moved forward - is now dead and buried. It's funny, people often think of neolithic people as dim witted cave men who were just too stupid to figure out how to make things like transistors and cars, when such knowledge is the result of thousands of years of of the accumulation of knowledge. In reality, they were smart. If they faced a new problem, they couldn't just go look it up on the internet, and they had to know a lot of the skills that were known to all of mankind at the time. Sure, it is possible that one person was the clan's designated flint knapper, but in general, when you look at what they were able to do with the tools they had, it becomes clear that they were no dummies.

I am not sure that is correct. Humanity is occasional blessed with extremely exceptional people that propel development in leaps. We also have long periods of contraction such as the dark ages when the world wasted about a 1000 years, doing nothing by subsistence living. People about once in about 100 years did we have someone become exceptional (ie Newton, Galileo, etc). if Newton hadn't been more, we probably would still be using horses for transportation today.
Probably the difference between today and the past, is that nature usually weeds out the dumbest in society in their early years. Today we have implemented "safe-guards" that prevent most dumb people from getting themselves killed off early in age. More people are alive would have died to either disease or self-inflicted injuries with out easy and abundant access to advance medical services.
That said, I am reasonably sure that intelligence is more or less an earned trait. Much like muscles, the more your willing to apply your mind, the smarter you can become. This probably does not apply to everyone (ie people with brain injuries or mental disabilities). Consider that even some very mentally ill people show incredible intelligence (ie Autistic people that are Math Whiz's)

Not correct. It was not the availability of medical care or knowledge that made a difference. It was society's ACCEPTANCE of the medical care and knowledge that made a difference. I'd venture a guess that great leaps of knowledge and skill levels are made in EVERY generation - but the people are not willing to accept those changes. In grade school I invented a new, faster way to do division. I was conned into abandoning the new method. In college I was assigned to write/program a Lotus database for the school to use. there were a couple of features I thought should be there, so I called Lotus engineers to find out how to do them. Two of them said, "Lotus won't do that." After I made Lotus do them, I called them back and told them thatt yes - Lotus WOULD do those things. They weren't interested in how I got their program to do what it was supposedly incapable of doing.
Again - it's not that advances aren't made - it's that they aren't accepted. Just being black won't get you anywhere. FWIW: going to an elite college isn't the answer (unless you already have the right family connections). Best option is the a good tech school and a stem degree. The world will become purely an academic pursuit. Forget about sports and other extra curricular events ( except music). I totally agree that the best academics should advance but if it becomes a detriment to student's other well rounding endeavors then we are left with a very hollow society. The pursuit of academic rituals/regimen in Japan did not get them too far. They are bankrupt yet have a very strict education policy 24/7. My wife teachs and sees a huge number of Asian and Indian children excel academically. Yet they are not represented in sports and other physical activities at all.

My Chinese (Hong Konger) buddy was on the fencing team with me; he's 6'2" and solid lean muscle...brought up on milk, meat, etc. His parents who did not benefit from wealth when they were young refugees from mainland are both about 5'4" and thin and weakly. You know, maybe I missed something, but I don’t see any Asian countries that are concerned about not providing enough educational opportunities for Europeans, while they continue to expect the US and Europe to educate Asians who routinely use the opportunity to steal technology and intellectual property from the West so that they can better compete with us.
One of the reasons for this is that Asian cultures have not developed university systems that any Europeans would want to attend. Maybe Asian countries should contemplate why that would be true, before they condemn us for not letting more Asians take places in our universities, subsidized by our taxpayers, while displacing our students.
Educational institutions used to have a cultural as well as an intellectual component to them.
As Europeans, we have every right to decide who we admit to our institutions, and one consideration in that analysis is the preservation of our cultures and our economies.
I wish this young Asian man the best, because he appears to have a lot of potential.
However, we have no shortage of talented brilliant European people who have not been given access to our institutions because of the biased cultural-marxist ideology that has infected the admissions departments at our major universities at the hands of the cabal, which favors foreigners and jews over white European applicants.

My conclusion after working on the "People side" of a number of Fortune 500 Companies and consultancies, is that almost all Business, Politics, Academia has become infested with the RACE/ALLEGED EQUALITY, and Perpetual Guilt of White People desease. Race quotas have been enshrined in US Law since 1965 and have gained much momentum since 1980.
The only group in the US that does not have minority status is white males. Even Illegal Hispanics once legalized will move ahead to the front of the line for jobs and education opportunities, although they are of white European descent.

If the playing field were level, every major university in USA would be 70% Asian - in particular with Chinese, Koreans, Indians and Japanese. But it is NOT level, and so that is not going to happen.

I actually had, for one summer, a Gran Torino. Green, with Starsky and Hutch stripes. It got 6-8 mpg cruising, 12 mpg freeway, but it seated 4 in front, 6 in the back and 6 Scandanavians or 12 Beans in the trunk. Yeah, you may get super hard working chinese getting into the top universities. They have zero sense of moral code and responsiblity.
For example, my old friend, he graduated from top university 40+ years ago in HK. At that time, it was super hard to get into unversities because there were only 2 universities in the whole HK. Of course, after his qualification he climbed the career super quick. He and his (separated) wife both are high flyers, they have two maids and a chauffeur. They can only make people envy. Every time I met him, he stressed how much important that I have to work hard, compete and get a good job, nothing else. That's all he cares and of course I am reserved and have different view.
Now the down side, he focuses career so much that he put so much pressure to his kids into education ladder. He cannot spare much time with his kid, so he sends them to great boarding school. His son developed depression between high school and university due to pressure. He still didn't spare much time putting priority on career first.
Last time, I bumped into him, he actually works for billionaires to secure casino deals. I asked him, how is your family. He told me, his son is no longer in this world. He had commited suicide. Too little too late. He have all these money, he doesn't have the pleasure to spend it because he feels guilty and blames himself all the time. All these money, he can't pass on, he can only bury it with his son.
