With US Warships En Route To Islands, China Asks: "What On Earth Makes Them Think We Will Tolerate This?"

Tyler Durden's picture

The US is in a tough spot militarily.

In Syria, Russia and Iran have taken advantage of the fact that the plan hatched by the West and its regional allies to destabilize the Assad regime took far too long to develop. The idea was to foment discord and provide covert support for the various armed militias fighting to overthrow the government. But the effort is entering its fifth year and Assad is still there. Not only that, there have been a series of unintended (well, at least we hope they’re unintended) consequences. First, one of the rebel groups the West and its allies supported morphed into an insane band of white basketball shoe-wearing, black flag-waving, sword-wielding desert bandits. Second, the fighting created a horrific refugee crisis that now threatens to destabilize the whole of Europe. Sensing a historic geopolitical opportunity, Moscow and Tehran simply stepped in and outmaneuvered Washington. Now, the US basically has to decide whether it wants to go to war with Russia, because paradropping ammo into the middle of the desert isn’t going to be a viable strategy.

Meanwhile, the US faces another superpower confrontation in the South China Sea.

When Beijing began its land reclamation efforts in the Spratlys, we’re reasonably sure the Pentagon didn’t anticipate the extent to which the effort would quickly become a giant headache for Washington.

As a reminder, it’s not so much the dredging that has Washington’s regional allies in the South Pacific upset. Island building has been done before in the area. Rather, it’s the scope of the project that has everyone unnerved as Beijing has so far constructed over 3,000 acres of new sovereign territory atop which China has built everything from cement factories, to greenhouses, to runways.

Whether or not the US really cares about this is debatable although these shipping lanes are indeed critical for world trade. But with The Philippines and others crying foul, Washington is left with little choice but to put on a brave face lest the world should get the idea that China can just redraw maritime boundaries at will and establish a Sino-Monroe Doctrine in the process.

So finally, the US decided that it would sail some warships by the islands just to see if it can do so without getting shot at.

No, really. That’s the whole plan. “Let’s see how far we can push them.”

This is of course orchestrated under the guise of a freedom of navigation operation which, in a way, makes little sense because China has never threatened global trade. Then again, it’s fairly obvious that Beijing has some military role for the new islands in mind.

In any event, China hit back on Thursday, saying the PLA would “stand up and use force” if necessary should the US make a “mistake” with the whole warship plan.

So in short, Washington is now in a staring contest with both Moscow and Beijing and both Russia and China seem to have gotten the idea that the US has lost its resolve lately and will probably blink first in both standoffs.

It’s with all of that in mind that we bring you the following rather amusing op-ed from Beijing out Saturday on Xinhua, presented below with no further comment:

*  *  *

Via Xinhua

The United States' provocative attempts to infringe on China's South China Sea sovereignty are sabotaging regional peace and stability and militarizing the waters.

The U.S. Navy is reportedly preparing to conduct "freedom of navigation" operations, sending warships within 12 nautical miles of Chinese islands in the South China Sea. The U.S. operations may take place within days, according to reports.

Last month, in his response to China's claim of sovereignty over the South China Sea, U.S. Secretary of Defense Ash Carter said the United States "will fly, sail and operate wherever the international law allows, as we do around the world."

White House Spokesman Josh Earnest said on Oct. 8 that U.S. warships patrolling close to artificial islands built by China in the South China Sea "should not provoke significant reaction from the Chinese."

Let us not forget that in October 1962, when the Soviet Union was building missile sites in Cuba -- not even on U.S. soil -- U.S. President Kennedy made it clear in a televised speech that the United States would not "tolerate the existence of the missile sites currently in place."

What on earth makes the United States think China should and will tolerate it when U.S. surface ships trespass on Chinese territory in the South China Sea?

China will never tolerate any military provocation or infringement on sovereignty from the United States or any other country, just as the United States refused to 53 years ago.

China's stand on the South China Sea disputes is firm and clear. China's sovereignty and claims of rights over Nansha Islands and their adjacent waters in the South China Sea have been formed over the long course of history and upheld by successive Chinese governments, and have adequate and solid historical and legal basis.

Just as Article 15 of the United Nations Convention of the Law of the Sea stipulates, delimiting the territorial seas of China and other countries in the South China Sea shall be in accordance with China's "historic title" to the region.

China has always been, in a constructive and effective manner, a firm upholder of the freedom of navigation as well as peace and stability in the South China Sea. And China has vowed to continue to do so in the future.

China's construction of civilian and public facilities on the Nansha Islands and reefs, which fall within the scope of China's sovereignty, serves not only China but also coastal nations in the South China Sea.

For instance, two lighthouses recently built on reefs in the region have helped guide passing vessels from around the world and significantly improved navigation safety.

Contrary to U.S. claims, it will be the United States, as an outsider, that further provokes tensions in the South China Sea by sending soldiers and warships to Chinese territory in the name of "freedom of navigation."

This is not the first move by the United States to undermine the regional peace and stability that China has worked so hard for.

Over the past several years, the United States has held frequent large-scale drills with its allies in the South China Sea, flexing their military muscles.

According to the website of the U.S. Department of Defense, the country has deployed thousands of civilian and military officials, as well as a huge number of weapons, to the Pacific region.

To destabilize the region and contain China, the United States has deliberately involved non-party nations, such as Japan, in the South China Sea issue and stirred disputes between China and other parties, including the Philippines.

By no means will China let the provocateurs make waves in waters that should be characterized by peace, friendship and cooperation.

Last year, the bilateral trade volume between China and members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) exceeded 480 billion U.S. dollars.

Concerned nations have no alternative but to jointly deal with disputes in the South China Sea that pose a threat to the development and prosperity of parties in the region.

On Sept. 18, in response to remarks made by the commander of U.S. forces in the Pacific on patrolling the South China Sea, a Chinese foreign ministry spokesman said China, like the United States, upholds freedom of navigation in the waters.

However, the spokesman stressed, China opposes any country's challenge, in the name of freedom of navigation, to China's sovereignty and security in the South China Sea.

During a visit to Europe in March 2014, Chinese president Xi Jinping stressed that his country will "never stir up any trouble, but will resolutely safeguard its legitimate rights" when it comes to sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Even though enhancing mutual trust and managing disputes through high-level visits and talks still remains the first option for China, the country will, without any doubt, adopt countermeasures against the United States if it doesn't stop military provocations that infringe upon China.

People with vision in Washington should and must see clearly China's determination in safeguarding national sovereignty and regional security.

Sadly, they don't. Remember, currency is just digits in a computer. There are two reasons why China has been selling crap to the US. First is the industiral and technological know-how. China doesn't give a shit how many iPhones it sells in the US, China cares about the industrial base and know-how. They can now build iPhones at will and export them to India, Africa, or wherever. Second was the aquisition of US dollars in order to buy African and other strategic mineral/real estate. Dollars are meaningles, gold mines are not.

Second, please look at the cost of an all out war (non-nuclear). It would cost the Chinese trillions of dollars. Not cost effective. Much better is to dump US treasuries and announce, along with Russia, Iraq, Iran and any other economic ally, they will no longer accept dollars for their goods. What would happen if oil has to be bought in yuan or rubles? What of the US consumer's standard of living when they weaken they make it so expensive to purchase chinese products that the average US consumer has to pay double for anything excluding food ( and since food has transportation costs, ie oil, food will also skyrocket)? What will happen when the FSA can no longer afford to live from the dollars provided by the US federal nanny?

No, the Chinese do not need to go to a hot war with the US. They can destroy us at will.

You see what happens Larry when you vote for speeches and peace prizes. Actually its not funny at all. The greatest loss to US strategic interests is the loss of faith of her allies, especially in the Middle East. The blunder with Iran has only begun.

Kissinger said [in so many words] recently Barry's foreign policy is next to disaster for the American people. One problem is we had a war monger as secretary of state instead of a diplomat. We're back to square one where the entire world hates us again, even our former friends.

It's a sad state of affairs. If Taiwan adn SK did not feel so threatened by China and HK, I am sure they would abandon USA also.

The 'Chosen' hijacked US foreign policy m ore than 20 years ago, along with the rise of the financial oligarchy in the US.  Remind me which US 'ally' this week killed dozens of protesters in the ME? Israel has killed or wounded hundreds in the last few months in the prison for the Palestinians the Chosen  created on Palestinian land.

Millions of Americans have woken up, just as Europeans did in the 1920's after the Versaille treaty, imposed by the financial oligarchy of Europe, robbed Germans of the their savings and pensions, starved millions, and nearly led to a communist takeover of the country.

This time hubris has resulted in the Chosen caught in a trap.  They only control one of the 3 power blocks of the world while their ruthless grasp for world control has untied the other two power blocks, Russia and China, against them.  Let the Jews sign up for the military now; the non-Jews just need to stay armed, stay united, and stay the hell out of it.

What you forget about China is that they could probably turn on a dime and nationalize everything. They could appeal to Chinese patriotism and claim that due to the World economic conditions, it is necessary to go back to the Chinese Communist model for a couple of years until the world economy recuperates.

So China reverts to its economic model of the late 1970's early 1980s, but with a shitload of modern, state of the art factories and workers who know how to operate them, thanks to the greed of the West.

More like toll to the troll, or kowtow to Chairman Mao.

The Chinese have parked in the middle of one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world with the intention of forcing maritime nations to seek their permission to pass. The goal here is to change de-facto possession to dejure, based on other nation's acceptance of those conditions.

If they do decide to enforce their claim, I predict the major shipping companies will re-flag, just like they did in the Persian Gulf.

Boarding a Greek or Liberian ship on the high seas doesn't have quite the same consequences as boarding one flying the US flag. The US Navy is there to make sure that doesn't happen. That's what this is about.

So... bullish for US maritime tax revenue and US flag makers!

While not the main story, an interesting outcome here might be that having re-flagged, many companies will see the advantage of bearing US registry and stay that way once the dust settles. It may cost more to register in the USA, but I bet the drop in insurance rates offsets a lot of that, especially if you sail in dangerous waters.

Raw resource wise, you may be correct. But resources are nothing without the industrial base to convert them from rock to computers or tree sap to tires. The us industrial base is in mainland China. True dat.  People are also forgetting their history:  The US isn't a provocateur of world wars but rather a profitter of them.  Sure we have engaged in aggressions against small time dictatorships, esp. since WW2, but that was for money.

The elephant in the room is king dollar.  It does bring to question that recent actions are bringing the end of kind dollar, but why?  You have a person like Putin skimming, what percentage of the Russian GDP?  And the 8 chicom immortal families doing the same.

If king dollar is over, why destroy the planet?  Take your toys, put them away, and start over.  That ploy has worked since the Assyrians.

Note 1: it is.

Note 2: not needed.

The Chinese are building up the spratleys because of the oil resources nearby. Oil, more than gold, is the only real money that exists. They will not react by sinking a US ship. They can read history better than we can and know about the Lusitania. They will allow the fleet to go by, perhaps with some provocative harassment, but will not be the ones to initiate violence.

Once the Navy behaves in a hostile manner, the Chinese will pull their ambassador, kick out the US ambassador and encourage Russia to do the same. Next will be India, Brazil and assorted African nations. They will announce the rejection of the US dollar and stop exporting to countries that continue to do business with the US. US corporations, owing no allegiance to any country, will agree to whatever terms the Chinese government impose in order not to loose access to the Chines market, but more importantly, to the industrial base (Apple would become Cisco overnight without the Chinese factories).

The US stock market will crash to 9000 the first week on its way to 3000. NASDAQ would have to close its doors. US artificial wealth would vanish faster than if hit by an EMP strike.

Obama is an amateur been led by psychopaths who still believe in US exceptionalism.

So glad I can live fine without a salary and that my wealth is not in digits but land, resources, water and energy.

Recommend you do the same.

China invaded Vietnam in 1979, 4 years after the end of America's involvement in the 2nd Indochina War and Jane Fonda's infamy.

However  I'm sure the souls of 58,000 Americans who fought against communism and died in the Vietnam War are happy to know they gave their lives so U.S. corporations could be on "excellent terms" with Vietnam which by the way, is still a communist ruled country.

Lets get the facts straight. The Us has every right to sail in those Waters. China's claim that those Islands belong to them is nothing else than a crap for Power. At one stage those Waters where owned by the Japanes Navy until the US Navy kicked them out. China is taking those areas over by force and the Countries nearby are not strong enough to say get lost. The only one that can stand up to them is the US and they have every right to sail in those Waters. That claim by China that is all the way down to Bornea is a joke and our Government here in Australia sees it the same way. Just like those Invaders into Europe, one has to draw the line in the Sand one day. No other Nation in that Area has said that the US Navy cannot sail there.

In ye olden days, we would sail the entire fleet into a harbor and that would be the end of the story.

The only equivalent to the show of force today would be to have the combined navies and Air Forces of all the nearby countries - along with the U.S. - sail or fly past the islands. The U.S. alone is no longer intimidating enough to deter the Chinese. However, the Chinese cannot control the islands is every adjacent country is with the U.S. in this.

‘Technically, an island under international law must be above sea level at all times and capable of human habitation. So roughly, of the disputed islands in the south, the Spratly Islands, around 50 are actually islands and the rest are rocks.’

China claims Scarborough Shoal is an island, while the Philippines maintain it is merely a rock. If the Scarborough Shoal is an island, it would confer an exclusive economic zone (EEZ) on the country that can claim sovereignty. Within an EEZ, the state has full rights to all natural resources for 200 nautical miles around.

If they're only rocks, they're only allowed a 12 nautical mile limit,’ says Stephanie Kleine-Ahlbrandt, the director of Asia-Pacific programs at the US Institute of Peace. ‘So that's why the Philippines would argue they are rocks. If they were to be, for example, decided to be Chinese, then it would give China only a 12 nautical mile limit.

The US has gotten themselves in a hell of a pickle by, once again, challenging the sovereign rights of others.  Not only that, it is inconceivable why they would go provoking China for no valid reason when China holds so much US debt that they could crash the US bond market in a week if they wanted to.  It seems that Putin was right, they must have oatmeal in their heads.

If anything, the US should be thanking China on a daily basis for having bought all those bonds in support of the US borrowing bubble.  The last thing US needs is for China to retaliate to this military excursion into Chinese waters, not by firing a shot, but by crushing the US bond market a little more each day until the US finally says "Ok, ok, ok... we sorry.

China creating ownership of real property 'out of thin air' is incorrect.  China  has created a military base and will defend it with whatever it takes.  Unless the US can conventionally beat the Chinese and run them out of the place, then it should do nothing.    A conventional confrontation will end up with several sunken US ships and thousands of dead sailors.   What wil DC do then?  Use nukes?  No it can't do that, unless it wants to be destroyed by H bombs as well.   So the only thing to do is to not do anything.

Maybe this whole thing is timed with the decision whether or not to let the yuan become part of the SDR.   The Chinese want to be allowed to join, because then they will be able to increase their economic influence while the US, controlled in reality by ZOP ('Zionist Occupied Palestine'), wants to prevent this unless China will let ZOP control the world.  A confrontation will be the cover to say no to China whereas if China allows the US to transit within 12 miles as a sign that they will kowtow to ZOP, they will be allowed to.

WE SEEM TO BE VERY LATE TO THE PARTY ..if we're trying to make a statement now.  It's not like this "island building expedition" by the Chinese has been any kind of surprise.

If our US ships stay outside the 12-mile limit of the Spratlys, then this becomes a media circus.  Everyone agrees the 12-mile limit is valid, and the Chinese know it.  It would be incredibly foolish for Chinese ships to fire on a US ship in international waters.  But it's a risky situation with so much naval firepower in close proximity.

IF the US enters the 12-mile limit of the islands ...  then WHERE are our allies?  Where are the Filipino ships, where are the Japanese ships?  If this is about "strategic access" for trade routes, these other countries should be deeply involved.
