Undersize Me? McDonald's Franchise Owners Admit Fast Food Giant "Facing Its Final Days"

Tyler Durden's picture

Having seen the writing on the $15 minimum wage wall...

h/t @TopherCarlton

And given the new 'lack of transparency' following McDonalds' managements' decision to stop reporting sales numbers monthly...

It appears McDonalds' franchie owners are voicing their concerns... rather ominously... as TheAntiMedia.org's Nick Bernabe reports,

Embattled fast food giant McDonald’s is making headlines yet again. The company has just launched its much advertised all-day breakfast program, but as that campaign rolls out, franchise owners are voicing their concerns over what may be the company’s dying days.

As we covered at Anti-Media in June, the McDonald’s franchise has been shrinking for the first time in the company’s over 40 year history:

“McDonald’s announced in April that it would be closing 700 ‘underperforming’ locations, but because of the company’s sheer size — it has 14,300 locations in the United States alone — this was not necessarily a reduction in the size of the company, especially because it continues to open locations around the world. It still has more than double the locations of Burger King, its closest competitor.”

However, for the franchisees, the picture looks much worse than simply 700 stores closing down.

“We are in the throes of a deep depression, and nothing is changing,” a franchise owner wrote in response to a financial survey by Nomura Group. “Probably 30% of operators are insolvent.” One owner went as far as to speculate that McDonald’s is literally “facing its final days.”

Franchisees have also been complaining about the erratic nature of McDonald’s corporate decision-making process. As Business Insider reports,

“The lack of consistent leadership from Oak Brook is frightening, we continue to jump from one failed initiative to another.”

They are likely referring to the company’s many marketing schemes that have been implemented recently to slow the bleeding of younger customers as they choose healthier, more local options en masse. As Anti-Media also reported in June,

“Though the chain has dominated the fast food market for decades, recent competition and health consciousness has challenged the popularity of its product. The growth of chains like Chipotle, which recently stopped using genetically modified ingredients, has reportedly diverted customers away from McDonald’s. Additionally, the company is losing a share of its young patrons while the rise of boutique burger chains such as Five Guys has put a dent in profits.

[…] The increased closures denote a growing shift in dietary preferences among Americans. This is consistent with recent moves by fast food chains to remove toxic chemicals from their ingredients, as well as with the exponential growth of organic, healthy alternatives.”

Are we seeing McDonald’s final days? If the trend towards healthier alternatives to McDonald’s continues, it’s a very real possibility.

Let me put it this way:

I worked at McD's for TWO WEEKS when I was 16, quit because I was that revolted - and I have never eaten there again since.

McD is so large there is not much they can do.

If you thought Chipotle had a hard time finding a substitute provider of pork for the Carnitas, imagine if McD ONLY wanted grass fed beef - not even organic - just grass fed.  There is not enough in the world to supply McD, not to mention no one is  going to pay $10.00 for a BigMac.

Organic anything is simply impossible at the scale McD is at.

McDs was so mismanaged by their last CEO it ain't funny. I dumped my shares long ago when I saw the thugs they were hiring at the counters. Horrible attitude and service. They ignored all the complaints and their BOD simply took their checks and di not really replace or correct that CEO.

Compare the incredibly successful What-A-Burger or Chick Filet; they hire good looking, clean yutes with a positive and friendly attitude ...plus their menu and food are 100x better then McDs. Except for the slums, maybe, people do not want to go to a FF place to be insulted by some low IQ threatening thug.

I am not sure McDs can pull out of this tailspin. Even BK has turned around into a super popular FF place and even higher priced Sonic is always packed. But they also hire much better counter people without that chip-on-the-shoulder attitude.

+1 about chick fil a. I don't eat fast food much, but thats usually where I go if I do. There is a mcds across the street from a CFA about 5 miles from my house in a pretty nice area. The people in chick fil a are young, nice looking, polite as hell, always get your order right, etc. The McDs, rude ass hood rats that can barely speak passable english. And there really aren't that many dindus around the area either, its like they bus them in just to work at mcdonalds or something...

McDonald's is so big and such an icon that if they do not hire the "hood rats" in large enough numbers, Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton and the half-black, Obama himself will be on their cases with lawsuits and fines.

Also, you forget that those hood rats are worth no less than $15/hr, much more than they are paid now. You are just insenstive, racist, selfsih, greedy bastards. You should go buy some burgers now and pay double. Do not go in with a CC, either, even if it looks dangerous.

pulled off I-95 in Florence SC to get a bite.

Wife goes inside. I notice we are in a BAAADDD neighborhood.  Like, da chillrens on the balcony of the section 8 motel next door screeching at each other. I don't see any white people anywhere around.

She comes out. Said she ordered quarter pounder with cheese meal, hoodrat behind the counter says "what number is that".

I was happy to get out of there alive.  Stopped again for real food later.

Went to WalMart today to get a dust mop.

Exited after spending $250 on shit wife wanted.

McD's was across the way (We seldom go to McD's due to the shitty service, fucked up order, cold shit and the sheer lethargy in the shifts we've observed), Wife was 'starving' (we ate lunch three hours before) I normally eat once a day.

Get to the drive through, wife wants 3 hamburgers with extra onions (she thinks this will get her fresh food).

I'm semi-hungry so I order a 1/4 pounder with cheese and a cheeseburger.

Beyound lack of salt and pepper, I don't know what to recommend to McD to overcome the mass of paste in my mouth.  It was so bad my dentures misplaced and I inadvertantly bit a slice through my tongue. McD's was a favorite back in the early sixties but we haven't boought one of their burgers for years.  I don't know hat they define 'meat' as, nor can I explain a mouthful of paste.  Whatever they're producing these days is a far cry from what it was in the 60's.  AND what used to cost $5 cost damn near $20.

Order came to $18.92, Gave the girl $23.92, spent an additional fifteen minutes while she counted change twice, before keying it in, refusing her handing me back the three dollars and waiting for her to hand me back a five and a ten.  Don't know what was going on in the vehicle ahead of us other than they handed their order back multiple times.

Pretty much spot-on assessment there, there actually is more to a fast food joint than the food they serve.

I haven't been to a Wendy's in roughly 8 years.  Why?  Their food went downhill and the last time I went to one the people behind the counter didn't speak English.  Really, I could not communicate with them.  The Spanish speaking customers had no problem.  Anyway, they fucked up my order and the food was rancid.  I call into to Wendy's HQ to complain, but their response was to send me coupons for free food at their "restaurants".  I threw them away.

Going back to McDonald's, there's no reason to go there now.  Their food sucks, the last time I ate there I felt like I'd been poisoned.  Also, their food is not very cheap when you compare it to other places, so why not pay just a little bit more and get something that won't make you sick.  Chick-fil-A, In & Out, and the latest entry into the fray that I really like is The Habit (they just went public and eyeing the stock carefully).

Hell, Dairy Queen nearby seems to be always packed, and for good reason.  The food is OK, but they have a 5 dollar lunch special everyday that is a good value and their staff is good.  Last time I was there a very nice young lady took my order and she did it with a smile on her face.  Unbelievable, but then I had to remind myself I wasn't at McDonald's or Wendys.

It's not like I eat at FF joints often, in fact I make most of my food at home, but when I do I tend to take notice what's going on at the place I'm eating at and the quality of the food.  It sure helps in your investing, and it helped me make a lot of money on Chipotle. McDonald's really fucked up when they divested themselves of Chipotle, in fact it could end up being the biggest mistake in the history of the company.

They tried tinkering with Chipotle and get them to do stuff they didn't want to rather than just sit back and let the $$.  That's what you do with a cash cow, you ring the bell and collect the $$, you DON'T try to feed the cow chocolate and hope it starts giving chocolate milk.  Idiots.

true, I pay about 8/lb for 90/10 grass fed, free range organic ground beef. No telling what would happen if someone big like Mcds started buying it all up. Although if more and more people started demanding it, the price may come down. People are able to get away with farming like that because most people don't give a shit. If more people cared, those big-agra feed lots would go out of business.

I suggest you dive deeper into the topic. Agriculture + petro based fertilizer is a kludge that has allowed us to have a larger population than the planet can support sustainably.

Land has a best use, and grassland is better used to pasture raise herds than to rip up for row crops. The water and fertilizer input for the row crops isn't negligible and over time the land is stripped of minerals and salts build up.

If Mcdonalds started buying grassfed beef, it would become profitable to start  a grassfed beef farm and america could have farmers again that are not owned by corporations.

Also in the long run the higher quaility food would come down in price.

The big industrial Farm Corps would loose profits and balance would shift to the little guy again.

Everybody is focused on McD.  Most all of them are the same in quality and effect now.  But yes, McD's of today is simply uneatable, McD's of 7 yrs ago was better, but then McD's of 7 yrs ago was many grades lower than the food they served 20 plus yrs ago.

Tried to eat their food once in the last 5 yrs and simply had to throw it away.  Before that would stop for a quick breakfast sometimes.  And before that would eat there (20 yrs ago or more) for lunch twice a week.  Progressive decline.  But basicly the same for Burger K, in my opinion.

Pink slime baby.  Wonder what garbage filler they use now.

McD's food took a huge turn for the worse in the late 90s/early 2000s, when they completely changed their food cooking procedures. Before, say, 1999, they would cook patties and build burgers continuously based on a daypart demand forecast, and then put them under heat lamps. This worked ok, and ensured that you generally got a freshly cooked burger, especially during high traffic day parts like lunch and dinnertime. But it meant that every day some food had to be discarded because it could only sit so long under the heatlamps.

After 1999, they switched processes. Now they precook the patties in the morning and store them, and microwave them on demand in order to build the sandwich to order. There is nothing nastier than microwaved meat, which of course means that their product quality has sucked balls for almost two decades.

That is disgusting.

My parents owned a couple of hamburger/barbeque places when I was a kid. Almost everything from the kitchen was from scratch except the cheese. Early on, we even had spiral cut french fries from potatoes we washed and peeled. The first hire was a retired butcher. The meat companies brought in sides of beef. All of the meat had to pass the butcher's standards. The barbeque pit was fired using hickory from our land.

My father personally built the first place before the microwave came into common use. There was already a microwave in the kitchen when he bought the second one. It was used only occasionally to thaw ingredients, not for final preparation of an order.

Fresh or forget it.

Between that and what the other posters mentioned about the beef itself it is now clearer.  Wondered why I had such a clear negative reaction years ago.  Attribute it to mgmt decisions that focused on increasing profits with no concern about maintaining long term profits.

As others say they have experienced.  It became a choice of going to the "mexican" staffed McD where they were apathetic and I could not communicate.  (The mgmt even put up hand written signs at the cash registers says they valued diversity and to not harass the staff) or to the black staffed McD where made it clear they did not like you but were just doing their job by serving you.

spot on. They make most of the profits from leases and fees from franchisees.

The issue is those franchisees have to stay afloat and make a profit otherwise the whole house of cards comes down.

Is Mc Donald's the staples of American food culture? I can't believe that americans are rallying against Mc Donalds. America has defined capitalism, mass consumption and eating any thing that moves at an extra ordinary levels. Is n't that weird that in the most advanced country Bio tech Industry is booming? I have no symapathy for americans. The sad part of this is that America exports these ideas to the East. That is what I have issues with. Get back to the basics like food, health, housing and family. The rest will take care of itself. We don't have the basics right but we have Instagrams and FB's Lol.  I am not sure what the number is most of the people who work in front of the computers don't need to look like Lebron James. Heck Even Lebron doesn't need to look like lebron. We just can't be happy with our own self eating veggies. We have to kill those animals and we have to kill them faster. Hmm What if animals have the capability to curse humans? When can they take revenge on us? Will americans be in the frontline when that happens? I wish it was just more than apes that could kill humans.

How about the gov't stop creating the incentive to not wanting to be alive due to all the sociopaths running the place?  How about the gov't stop forcing kids to be tortured and traumatized at 'school' and turned into broken neurotic fuck-ups who can't make heads or tails out of anything (but are SUPER easy to manipulate through advertising and TV programming).

I personally think that part of what makes our world so awful is that our elites not only make it so unlivable (THE FUCKING PRESSURE!), and yet at the same time we are programmed with all this BS according to which it is a huge crime to commit suicide if you are vastly unhappy.

Only an uncaring person would want unhappy people to continue to live deeply unhappy lives.  I wish there were easier ways out for unhappy people (if indeed the elites are aiming for 90% population reduction), and I certainly wish we didn't live in an evil, perverse, depressing satanic society - since there actually are ways to truly heal and be happy, but no gov't 'doctor' is proving them, of course.

The fact remains: a satanic society will cause a lot of suffering in everything and everyone around.  ON PURPOSE.

---

But that being said, what motivated your friend to bring a life into such a world?  Is she really surprised that her daughter would rather die than continue to suffer with us as we travel ever deeper into man-made hell?

Even when I didn't care about my health, I knew that Taco Bell had tacos for $0.60, whereas McDonalds cheapest item (the reprehensible Quarter Pounder) was closer to $3. The Quarter Pounder was vile, whereas the Taco Bell taco was good enough to keep me fed through college back in the '90s.

All that to say, even when I ate junk food, I couldn't figure out how McDonalds stayed in business. They charged a lot for nasty food and plowed all the money back into marketing. It's not a recipe for long term success.

It seems to be my lot in life to have these realizations about 20 years before everyone else in the world. I scratch my head trying to figure out everyone's complete obliviousness for 20 years. Then suddenly, it's like the 100th monkey syndrome sets in.

McDonald's food-as-poison aside for a moment, let us consider something for the current, and quite possible, immediate future:

"...that have been implemented recently to slow the bleeding of younger customers as they choose healthier, more local options en masse."

And what of the prices for those 'healthier, more local options', anyone...?

The point being, the younger set has disposable income, government handouts, and a healthy dose of consumerism vs. 'save today, spend later' mentality - i.e., for the time being, many of these kids can $afford to eat at the trendy 'healthier' establishments.

What happens when these younger customers can no longer afford a $10 burger...?

You got it.

McDs is about the lowest priced of the large chains.   Many people commenting here point to "better" food at other stores, but they neglect to mention that they are all much more expensive.

Sort of like people saying how great a Tesla is and comparing them to other cars.   But they never compare them to other $100k+ cars.

McD does a great job for their market niche.

The only thing I eat from McD is a couple of their breakfast items.   Still "real" food.

All depends on what you purchase. Not big on fast food here...mostly gave it up after my early 20s.

Locally owned burger shop: freshly made real beef burger w/grilled onion and all the fixings $5.35 w/tax

Chipotle: 2 tacos will cost you about $5. They pre-sell it as 3 tacos, but you can just order 1 or 2

Chic-fil-a: actual chicken chunks...just get the nuggets or strips; don't need fries and I'm fine with water $5ish

Local mediterranean place: lunch plate special, chicken schwarma or shish tawook (marinated grilled chicken) with rice pilaf and a nice salad dressed with a garlicy oil and vinegar and free pita $8, so a little more, but I can make two meals off of this

Pho: Vietnamese noodle soup, most places a big bowl is around $7ish...I can't finish it. Add hoisin, sriacha, thai basil, cilantro, black pepper...yum.

Chinese takeout: lunch specials all over, just have to find a place you like, usually $6 - $7

Taqueria: have to find a good one and figure out what you like, but easy to get fed plenty of real food for a good price...may need to use google translate if you don't know the lingo and want to avoid things like tripe.

Mostly we cook and eat at home, but if you try at all and go for lunch it isn't hard to find a much better value than McD's.

I think McD has priced themselves out of the market.  Their food used to be cheap but it is not any longer.  When you compare what you are getting to what you are paying at McD the equation doesn't work out IMHO.

Sure these other places cost a bit more.  But the food is a LOT better.  People can make the judgment, and they do.

Also, McD screwed themselves with foam-rubber buns and over-preserved food that simply isn't tasty.  They deserve what is happening to them, any one could read the tea leaves and see that the current consumer wants less of that, not more.  And they certainly aren't going to pay "good food" prices for crap.

The 'younger set' need to realise that you can eat well, with a little effort, for less than eating crap fast food.

It seems that most humans will give away anything and everything, so long as it's 'convenient'.

I predicted the Chapter 11 bankruptcy of McDonalds Corp. more than a year ago. If McDonalds Corp. is ready to hire an appropriate Chief Executive Officer due to the fact that they don't have a clue what they are doing, I would gladly take the job for one dollar more than the present CEO is getting. Clearly, the present imbecile leadership does not know how to mothball the corporation, or how to sell off all the useless franchises. McDonalds is finished just like the United States of America, but they are collectively clinging to 'hope & change' which is not where America is going down the road of bankruptcy & ruin.

The burger in their hamburgers is a horrible combination of pink slim taken off of animal carcuses after all decent meat is cut away. The bones with connective tissue and the like are spray washed with high power water jets in front of a screen designed to capture everything coming off of the bones. This pink slime has been around for days sitting in bone piles and is so loaded with bacteria that a soak in chemicals and bleech is needed, then the slime is soaked in clean water to leech away the chemical bath. The slime is then added to the trimmings from the meat conveyer where all decent cuts are removed and trimmed, the boxes of cut away fat, gristle and such is frozen into huge blocks to be sent to the hamburger maker machines. They mix pink slime and trimmings to form patties of so called hamburger product. This is then given a chemical formula that simulates meat taste.

Enjoy! Mmmmm good!

The last time I had a fast food burger, my cat would not touch a piece of the meat.  Stupid me, I coaxed him to try it and he barfed immediately. This was a healthy, young animal that could not hold down a tiny bite of so-called beef.  I knew something was wrong and have never eaten that again.

Years later I learned about pink slime, and how the ingredients are so spoiled and smell so foul, they have to sterilize it in ammonia.  After rinsing, the trace amounts of ammonia and stink aren't detectable by humans. However, it is noticeable to cats, and they have the sense to know food isn't supposed to smell that way.

Anyone can argue that the food is pure poison (as noted above), but we surely all will agree that it is the friendly faces and caring personalities behind the counter that keep us coming back.  Amirite?

Mc Shittles needs to build loading docks with ramps in front of all their stores so their clientele can [off load] their fat bloated Hoveround carcasses into the troughordering area.

Sales are slumping because the cattle can't reach the feeding area.
