Undersize Me? McDonald's Franchise Owners Admit Fast Food Giant "Facing Its Final Days"

Tyler Durden's picture

Having seen the writing on the $15 minimum wage wall...

h/t @TopherCarlton

And given the new 'lack of transparency' following McDonalds' managements' decision to stop reporting sales numbers monthly...

It appears McDonalds' franchie owners are voicing their concerns... rather ominously... as TheAntiMedia.org's Nick Bernabe reports,

Embattled fast food giant McDonald’s is making headlines yet again. The company has just launched its much advertised all-day breakfast program, but as that campaign rolls out, franchise owners are voicing their concerns over what may be the company’s dying days.

As we covered at Anti-Media in June, the McDonald’s franchise has been shrinking for the first time in the company’s over 40 year history:

“McDonald’s announced in April that it would be closing 700 ‘underperforming’ locations, but because of the company’s sheer size — it has 14,300 locations in the United States alone — this was not necessarily a reduction in the size of the company, especially because it continues to open locations around the world. It still has more than double the locations of Burger King, its closest competitor.”

However, for the franchisees, the picture looks much worse than simply 700 stores closing down.

“We are in the throes of a deep depression, and nothing is changing,” a franchise owner wrote in response to a financial survey by Nomura Group. “Probably 30% of operators are insolvent.” One owner went as far as to speculate that McDonald’s is literally “facing its final days.”

Franchisees have also been complaining about the erratic nature of McDonald’s corporate decision-making process. As Business Insider reports,

“The lack of consistent leadership from Oak Brook is frightening, we continue to jump from one failed initiative to another.”

They are likely referring to the company’s many marketing schemes that have been implemented recently to slow the bleeding of younger customers as they choose healthier, more local options en masse. As Anti-Media also reported in June,

“Though the chain has dominated the fast food market for decades, recent competition and health consciousness has challenged the popularity of its product. The growth of chains like Chipotle, which recently stopped using genetically modified ingredients, has reportedly diverted customers away from McDonald’s. Additionally, the company is losing a share of its young patrons while the rise of boutique burger chains such as Five Guys has put a dent in profits.

[…] The increased closures denote a growing shift in dietary preferences among Americans. This is consistent with recent moves by fast food chains to remove toxic chemicals from their ingredients, as well as with the exponential growth of organic, healthy alternatives.”

Are we seeing McDonald’s final days? If the trend towards healthier alternatives to McDonald’s continues, it’s a very real possibility.

McDs needs to get back to the basics.  Burgers and fries.  Get rid of a lot of menu items.  Fix marketing, I'm not sure who the "I'm lovin' it" commericials play to.  I'm sure some of it is health conciousness, but I'm thinking very little.  I'm probably not their demo though, I hardly ever eat fast food; maybe once a year.

He has taken it upon himself to wage a one clown war against these infidels.

Taco Bell. Two of them in my area remodeled. The method of "remodeling"? They tore the old ones down to the dirt and rebuilt. The last thing Taco Bell needs is an "open kitchen", I am surprised they let you even in that dump. Last time I went inside one, I thought I had Velcro on my feet, the floor was that sticky. One look at the crew making the tacos sent me in reverse faster that the French Army. Everybody is talking about McDonalds fake meat, does Taco Hell even have any beef in the beef? They should have stayed with their core competency, being the National Telephone Company of Mexico.

This bio clearly needs to be updated.

I have to agree. Back in high school, Taco Bell was pretty good (especially the Encheritos).

They have since taken nicely seasoned ground beef (dry, as it should be), and turned it into a sloppy wet disgusting mess. Truly garbage.

They've also shrunk the tortilla that is completely tasteless, and doubled it when wrapping their shit up, so as to save money on the crap inside. You often are left nawing on at least four sheets of pasty cardboard.

It's been awhile since I ate it, and I'll never eat it again.

If these joints disappear someday, I won't wonder why...

all mcdonalds has to do is serve real food instead of creations from its food lab. i had 5 guys hamburger and fries for the first time this summer. the fries were unbelievably good, best since the original mcdonalds fries. the burger was also very good to excellent depending upon the ciook. mcdonalds spends more time and money selling gimics to sell their food than selling their food to sell food. no one is asking for 5 star food but they should, at least, try to get to one star.

Plus there's a restaurant in every home in America. It's called the kitchen. Money is tight and groceries are not what I would call cheap, but they're a necessity, so they come first. Eating out is a luxury. Paying 10$ for a fart samwich laxative, flavorless greesed potato strings, and a cup of sugar bubble water isn't high on my list of priorities. Plus Dicky Mee's advertisements are among THEE most annoying out there.

I think McDonalds is fine and I eat there frequently when traveling to unknown foreign nations when I'm fatigued and don't want to have to deal with foreign languages and alien cuisines.  One thing I notice all across the world is that McDonalds is always PACKED full of foreign locals any time I stop for a visit.  And the food is fine.  You people need to stop drinking the Chipotle hipster Whole Foods Kool Aid and realize you've been had.

Am I saying you should eat McDonalds every day?  No.  But once a week is fine and your hysteria is laughable.

LOL.  I guess you can afford to eat McDonalds in Asia.  Since I travel on a tight budget, I eat and stay local.  When I need cheap, I actually buy sandwich fixings at the local GROCERY STORES (GASP!).  And I've learned a lot more about the area by doing so, than by heading straight for the pricey American imports.  But of course, our reasons for traveling are probably very different.

In Europe McDonalds, BurgerKing etc. are usually by far the cheapest meals around.  Even still, it is $20 per fast food meal in Sweden and Norway.  If you want a burger at a "local" place it'll be $34 for the burger.  Just the burger, no drink, no fries.

Stop at any random rest stop on the autobahn in Germany and notice how the Germans all swarm to Burger King for cheap eats and avoid the more expensive "German" food that is always on offer in the same building.

I've done the same on occasion when traveling.

A few people have commented that you should eat local when traveling. Those people obviously don't travel, or they only go to resorts or on package tours.    You never know the quality of "local" places, and when traveling, I don't have an hour or more to sit at a local restaurant in the middle of the day.

@ to slow the bleeding of younger customers as they choose healthier, more local options en masse.

Those big fatties are starting to choose salads and vegetables, right?

As for Chipotle, “a group of writers at the New York Times blog The Upshot  analyzed 3,000 Grubhub orders from Chipotle locations in Washington, D.C., and East Lansing, Michigan and found that the average Chipotle order contained 1,070 calories.

Also, in several years I have only once seen a white employee working at the several Chipotles in my California area. As such, the chain has had discrimination lawsuits.  Reuters in 2011 reported that Chipotle Mexican Grill had “hired a team of Washington legal A-listers to shore up its hiring and handle a federal criminal investigation stemming from the discovery of hundreds of illegal workers in its popular burrito restaurants.

“The Denver-based chain has been in hot water since audits by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) turned up large numbers of undocumented workers on payrolls in Minnesota, Virginia and Washington, D.C.”

http://www.businessinsider.com/calories-in-average-chipotle-order-2015-2

This past July, the Charlotte Observer reported that Chipotle was looking for more bilingual employees by participating at The Bilingual Customer Service Career Fair at the Latin American Coalition along with such employers as Verizon, Goodwill and the Charlotte Hornets who were interviewing  prospective employees.

Those dining at Starbucks are now supporting radical social movements including race integration, gun restrictions and an aggressive homosexual agenda. this is all very simple.

CMG reports on Tuesday for a quarter it raised prices.

The raise was substantial in some areas it remains to be seen the result of it.

Since CMG is local - the earnings will reflect US market strength - but the MCD is entirely different story.

With YUM slow and Dominos underperformance - it is VERY LIKELY their earnings will be BAD.

Only 1 single metric will be observed by EVERYBODY.

Revenue. This number is expected to come 6.4B

Lowest estimate is 6.12B

But if it comes at less then 6B - the stock will crash.

How likely is it? Who knows really?

I remember how Mc Donalds grew in the '90's. It was a really well run company, and people couldn't gobble it's stock up fast enough.

Then came the Dot-Com bust, and finally the '07 meltdown, and people were forced to decide between shitty slimey crapola, or a cheap Weber grill on Craigs List.

A few years ago, some .corp goons @ Mc Donalds thought hanging some chandeliers and dipping their sporks in silver paint would "some -how" make fast food a dining experience.

I guesss they forgot about the pavement apes splashing their 40oz Malt Liquor on the windows.

If they are lucky, some venture capital outfit will do something stupid and buy them out.

That'll be the end of them. Maybe the mighty Cola will be next. Then hopefully Kraft, Nestle, Pepsico and Monsanto.

None of them have anything to do with food.

That is what they drilled into me when I was a teen working there

Which if those elements have they retained?

None.

Management is more concerned with renovations and gimmicks to fool the buying public into consuming their garbage

McD's may arrogantly think they can fight customers on the push for real food because they are too big to fail but the customer won't be mocked and will vote with their wallets. What have you done for me lately McD's? I'm not lovin' it

Ok guys, I read through all of your comments, and no one seemed to say anything about the chart in the artlcle.

Look at the chart and how the curves flatten post 2012.  I look at charts all fucking day and this is bullshit.  Curves just don't flatten like that.  This data is CLEARLY faked post 2012.  I don't know what they did or how they did it, what data point they are leaving out, but something is really wrong with that data.

Also, I can verify from my personal observation that the local McDonalds, without a doubt, have far fewer customers then in the past. Lots half empty, much shorter drive-through lines.  Maybe it's more noticable in the rural areas which is why some of you may not ageee that their traffic is down.

Someone mentioned bail-outs. McDonalds actalluy DID receive a bail-out in a round-about way, as they now take EBT in a lot of areas so this is indirect government support.  If they tank I have nodoubt they would receive some kind of government help, at the very least to the inner-city and minority owned franchises.

It was sad when so many of the local burger joints closed due to the long term inflation that priced normal people out of business.  This phenomenon has repeated across the whole spectrum of the business world, leaving only a few megacorps in control of vast swathes of the landscape.

This is what happens when control of the money supply is handed over to oligarchs. End the monopoly on money, end the problems.

I am not the healthiest eater in the world but...

I was running from place to place on Friday night with the kids.  We grabbed McDs.  I ordered a fish burger and the thing was not edible.  Their problem isn't that their fast food is unhealthy, it's fucking inedible.  Not sure what they are doing to cut costs but it isn't fucking food.

Wife brought home some burger from Target one day and that shit wasn't food either.  Told her never ever again.  If she doesn't have time to go get some burger for dinner, call me and I will get over to the last remaining butcher shop we have.

They claim that fish is wild caught pollock, but what is interesting is they say it is 100% sourced from sustainable fisheries, not that it is 100% wild caught pollock.

We use wild-caught Alaskan Pollock for our Filet-O-Fish sandwich in the U.S., which is 100% sourced from sustainable fisheries certified by the Marine Stewardship Council. Why is sustainable fish so important to us? Because it helps protect our oceans — something that's important to you.

The way this claim is worded, it might be other stuff in there. I had a fish sandwich last summer, and it was edible but barely because I was starving and far away from home (these two conditions must be met before I even consider McD). What stood out was how wet the lettuce and bun were. The lettuce was also soggy and just disgusting. Had to pull it off the sandwich. The fish itself had some properties of fish/pollock, but also was rubbery and clearly had something else going on. If I weren't starving I would have returned it or threw it out. But, note to self: even if I am starving and far from home, no more McD. It would have to be concentration-camp level starvation before I eat that again, which is possible given that our Country has been hijacked.

For full disclosure: I'm a healthy eater and home cook every night, if that means anything regarding my opinion. I have no position either way in McD.

Interesting information on the fish burger.  When the kids were younger and wanted to go I would take them and either not eat or get the fish.  The thing I had the other night wasn't good.  The kids don't even want to go to McDs now but like I said we were going from one place to another and it was our only option.  Not really our only option as we could have skipped the meal and grabbed drinks at a convenience store.  I've never eaten a hot dog from a convenience store because there is no way that could be good.  McDs has arrived as their food is now the equivalent of convenience store hot dogs.

Notice the terms pollock and 100% are in different sentences.  It is deceptive.  It does not mean 100% pollock.  No doubt it is chemicals, cellulose (their fav ingredient) and a hint of pollock grease, just to give it a fishy taste/smell.

It strikes me that McDonalds is about to get "right"-sized. 14K locations in USA alone? More than twice the next closest competitor, Burger King? This almost felt inevitable even if the economy was humming along. It's been my experience that the boutique burger places sell comparably priced food that tastes better. My general understanding is that the boutique burger places don't have drive-thrus, and this is the only reason I can fathom somebody actually choosing to eat at McDonald's - the convenience of the drive-thru - as opposed to one of the other sit down burger places that aren't Wendys/BK/DQ/ etc...

edit with another thought: Is breakfast all day a sign of capitulation to the boutique burger companies? I think it is.

We recently stopped in McDonalds for Chicken sandwichs with warm coffee mocha. I had to repeat, twice, the mocha was warm, not ice, and medium size.

The sandwiches were dry with old chicken. The coffee mocha was small not medium. The last three McDonalds visits got the coffee mocha wrong, either wrong size or ice not warm. The attendants are talking on their Blue tooth and trying to accomplish 3 things at once. I won’t return for poor food and bad service. The other customers were commenting on how long it was taking for their “fast food” orders. Bring on the bankruptcy!

This is another one of those stupid propaganda memes like "green", which the sycophants like to throw around as if it means something to the rest of us.  Nobody gives a shit about this if they are going to a burger joint.  You can't explain away your failure by pretending people have changed en masse and now want to eat fancy lawn clippings instead of beef on a bun.

The reason people aren't going to McDonald's boils down to what people in this thread have said.  They suck at what they do now and other people are doing it better.

I am reminded of a story about a New York matron who was shocked Nixon won the election. She told the reporter no one she knew voted for him. In my small town both stand alone McDonald's do a steady business and the one located inside the Walmart gets a continuous flow of customers from the crowd of Walmart shoppers. Of course the barbecue joints, sub shops, and even the Chili's are crowded also. Lots of retires, soccer moms, and young families.

I don't eat out much myself because I hate to leave home, not because the food is bad. The only place I refuse to go is Beef O'Bradys. But I think Roundup has a pleasant aroma so maybe my senses are dulled.

Lunch for 2 can exceed $14.  You never leave MCD's feeling good.  I remember their fillet o' fish sandwiches were $0.99. I think now they're $4.  I agree, there are a lot of fast food choices nowadays.  Five Guys is better tasting than MCD's and priced a bit lower.

As one poster said McDonalds was founded on Quality-Service-Value.  The solution to their problems is simple because they don't meet any of these founding principles.  Value was value for the customer first, not value to the shareholders first.  Without customers you have noting to give shareholders.

Same here in Malaysia. Except here the bathrooms are good in most places. In China you'd think they were serving gourmet cuisine with multiple queues of people side by side eagerly waiting to get fed. Perhaps the corporate MCD management has just given up on US franchises and wants to focus on overseas markets where the opportunites are. Due to the malaysian ringit being so low, the last time I went I had the quarter pounder with fries, soda, mcflurry, coffee and soup for USD$4. Then agian, the best thing about Malaysia is the local food so it's only a once a month thing to eat at an american chain.

reminisces about mickey d's forcing all the other fast food shops (competing chains or greasy spoon all night one shelf take-away only's) in London in the 70's.

now in Chicago, the target market is lower socio-economic bracket people (bottom 20%) served by the bottom 10%; english is not the first langauge either by origin or ability.

the 1/4 lb burgers start that way because the pink slime that it is made from is probably injected with water that is then fried out, leaving something you eat instead of playing poker with...

the fries aren't bad, neither are the shakes, the rest...well no quality, no value and my local bar can produce a meatier, juicier burger with the same claimed meat content that actually tastes like meat.

burger king is similar..

the answer is that any mass produced food eventually tastes like shit when corporate "strategic planners" are not forced to actually eat the shit their marketing plans invent, at least five times a week at random mickey d oultets in the big cities.  I expect that would improve the quality in short order (pun intended).

Culvers is alright, I like the Wisconsin swiss melt.  Cook Out in the east is good(Cheeseburger with a side corndog and a fancy shake).  I've never had In and Out.  When I lived in KC, I'd go to Backyard Burgers

http://dailycaller.com/2014/06/30/11-things-you-didnt-know-you-could-buy...

Over the past few years, EBT has been used for some “questionable” items. Here are 11 questionable items that you can (or will soon be able to) purchase with an EBT card.

  1. Quesarito: Taco Bell is one of many fast food restaurants that accept EBT cards. Guacamole is extra? Who cares? It’s on the taxpayer.
  2.   Bail: Convicted felons – like drug dealer Kimball Clark – have reportedly used their EBT as bail money. Clark reportedly instructed someone to go to an ATM to withdraw money from his EBT for bail. Because it’s difficult to trace ATM abuse, many speculate this problem is more widespread and not just found in isolated incidents.
  3. Lingerie: Kiss My Lingerie, an adult store in Gonzales, Louisiana, accepts EBT. Other adult stores have also been known to accept welfare transactions. In this case, officials said the store doesn’t violate the rules for EBT because of discrepancies in the law.
  4. KFC: Well, chicken is a protein, and protein is good for you, right? KFC is another well-known fast food chain that accepts EBT.
  5. Shoes: While Payless ShoeSource is known for their BOGO sales, they’re certainly not the cheapest place to buy shoes. Despite the prices and functionality, they also accept EBT.
  6. Strip clubs: Last year, the New York Post reported that FOIA requests revealed welfare recipients were regularly making EBT withdrawals at the ATMs near and inside infamous porn shops, liquor stores, lounges and hookah parlors. Technically, it also doesn’t break the law because of the “cash assistance program.”
  7. Lobster: There have been multiple cases of this. As long as it’s not tobacco or alcohol, you’re golden.
  8. Starbucks: While corporate stores don’t accept EBT, any Starbucks in a Target or grocery chain is considered a grocery item. So $7.00 for a mocha cookie crumble frappuccino and pumpkin loaf? Go.
  9. Cold hard cash: Some people are in the business of selling their EBT benefits for cash. Craigslist has been a great conduit for these “creative entrepreneurs.”
  10. K-cups: A lot of people don’t buy coffee in this form because it’s too expensive, but it’s not off limits in the world of welfare.
  11. Cupcakes/Gourmet cakes: It’s considered food, no matter the price. Hello, non-essential $45 cake.

    Coming Soon? Pot:
Colorado became the first state to legalize the use of recreational marijuana, and they also might become the first state to have tax payer funded pot smoking. A Colorado Pot Shop called Rite Greens has already taken the steps to officially accept EBT.

Wow, Tyler!  Talk about crappy timing!  MCD just hit an all time high.  Rocketing nearly 20% in the last month.

Meanwhile, the assertion from competitors like Chipotle that they are not using GMO based food products is laughable.  For example, 94% of all Corn and Soy grown in the US is GM engineered to produce insecticides and resist powerful herbicides.  While the likes of Chipotle states that they don't use food products based on GM corn and soy, they demure in just how they go about that.  They do admit that their meat is derived from GM products which are feed to the producing animals.

Oh and by the way, if the entire planet outside the US was to suddendly stop producing food, the US could feed it. That's how high yield and efficient our farmers have become (provided farmers stop producing corn for the braindead use of making ethanol and collecting a paycheck for leaving cropland fallow).  Nevertheless, food production across the planet is such - in part because of the work that Monsanto and Syngenta have done - that there should be no one on the planet to go hungry.  The problem is not production, but distribution with over half the world's countries run by psychopathic murdering thugs, food is used as a weapon of control - quite effectively.

But, yeah, we were talking about MCD - so-so stock - now that they got rid of the affirmative action chosen CEO, but disgusting horrible food <barf>.

That is a good sign - it means people start to eat more heathy.

Hey, guys.

Let's start a pool to see who comes closest to picking the day that McDonalds gets tossed out of the Dow 30.

Just start frying the potatoes in lard, again. Problem solved. Heck, I'd start buying them.

It would be nice if McDonalds went under, a symbol of the Empire going belly-up is a good sign.

I hestitate to say I have few problems with McDonalds.  "Its final days" is more appropriately aimed at our economy rather than this company.   In my lifetime, McDonalds has been maintained themselves well and adapted.  I see no final days.   Unleash the downvotes.
