Peter Schiff’s Father Dies In Prison, Shackled To A Hospital Bed

Most of you will be quite familiar with Peter Schiff. Fewer of you will know much about his father, Irwin Schiff, who was posthumously referred to as the “grandfather of the contemporary tax protest movement” in Forbes.
Irwin was treated very poorly by his own country, particularly toward the end of his life when, despite being legally blind and dying of cancer, he was not permitted to die in peace amongst family members.
His son Peter wrote the following as a tribute:
My father Irwin A. Schiff was born Feb. 23rd 1928, the 8th child and only son of Jewish immigrants, who had crossed the Atlantic twenty years earlier in search of freedom. As a result of their hope and courage my father was fortunate to have been born into the freest nation in the history of the world. But when he passed away on Oct. 16th, 2015 at the age of 87, a political prisoner of that same nation, legally blind and shackled to a hospital bed in a guarded room in intensive care, the free nation he was born into had itself died years earlier.
My father had a life-long love affair with our nation’s founding principals and proudly served his country during the Korean War, for a while even having the less then honorable distinction of being the lowest ranking American soldier in Europe. While in college he became exposed to the principles of Austrian economics through the writings of Henry Hazlitt and Frederick Hayek. He first became active in politics during Barry Goldwater’s failed 1964 presidential bid. His activism intensified during the Vietnam Era when he led local grass root efforts to resist Yale University’s plans to conduct aid shipments to North Vietnam at a time when that nation was actively fighting U.S. forces in the south. Later in life he staged an unsuccessful write in campaign for governor of Connecticut, then eventually lost the Libertarian Party’s presidential nomination to Harry Brown in 1996.
In 1976 his beliefs in free market economics, limited government, and strict interpretation of the Constitution led him to write his first book The Biggest Con: How the Government is Fleecing You, a blistering indictment of the post New Deal expansion of government in the United States. The book achieved accolades in the mainstream conservative world, receiving a stellar review in the Wall Street Journal, among other mainstream publications.
But my father was most known for his staunch opposition to the Federal Income Tax, for which the Federal Government labeled him a “tax protester.” But he had no objection to lawful, reasonable taxation. He was not an anarchist and believed that the state had an important, but limited role to play in market based economy. He opposed the Federal Government’s illegal and unconstitutional enforcement and collection of the income tax. His first book on this topic (he authored six books in total) How Anyone Can Stop Paying Income Taxes, published in 1982 became a New York Times best seller. His last, The Federal Mafia; How the Government Illegally Imposes and Unlawfully collects Income Taxes, the first of three editions published in 1992, became the only non-fiction, and second and last book to be banned in America. The only other book being Fanny Hill; Memoirs of a Woman of Pleasure, banned for obscenity in 1821 and 1963.
His crusade to force the government to obey the law earned him three prison sentences, the final one being a fourteen-year sentence that he began serving ten years ago, at the age of 77. That sentence turned into a life sentence, as my father failed to survive until his planned 2017 release date. However in actuality the life sentence amounted to a death sentence. My father died from skin cancer that went undiagnosed and untreated while he was in federal custody. The skin cancer then led to a virulent outbreak of lung cancer that took his life just more than two months after his initial diagnosis.
The unnecessarily cruel twist in his final years occurred seven years ago when he reached his 80th birthday. At that point the government moved him from an extremely low security federal prison camp in New York State where he was within easy driving distance from family and friends, to a federal correctional institute, first in Indiana and then in Texas. This was done specially to give him access to better medical care. The trade off was that my father was forced to live isolated from those who loved him. Given that visiting him required long flights, car rentals, and hotel stays, his visits were few and far between. Yet while at these supposed superior medical facilities, my father received virtually no medical care at all, not even for the cataracts that left him legally blind, until the skin cancer on his head had spread to just about every organ in his body.
At the time of his diagnosis in early August of this year, he was given four to six mouths to live. We tried to get him out of prison on compassionate release so that he could live out the final months of his life with his family, spending some precious moments with the grandchildren he had barely known. But he did not live long enough for the bureaucratic process to be completed. Two months after the process began, despite the combined help of a sitting Democratic U.S. congresswoman and a Republican U.S. senator, his petition was still sitting on someone’s desk waiting for yet another signature, even though everyone at the prison actually wanted him released. Even as my father lay dying in intensive care, a phone call came in from a lawyer and the Bureau of Prisons in Washington asking the prison medical representatives for more proof of the serious nature of my father’s condition.
As the cancer consumed him his voice changed, and the prison phone system no longer recognized it, so he could not even talk with family members on the phone during his finale month of life. When his condition deteriorated to the point where he needed to be hospitalized, government employees blindly following orders kept him shackled to his bed. This despite the fact that escape was impossible for an 87 year old terminally ill, legally blind patient who could barley breathe, let alone walk.
Whether or not you agree with my father’s views on the Federal Income Tax, or the manner by which it is collected, it’s hard to condone the way he was treated by our government. He held his convictions so sincerely and so passionately that he continued to espouse them until his dying breath. Like William Wallace in the final scene of Braveheart, an oppressive government may have succeeded in killing him, but they did not break his spirit. And that spirit will live on in his books, his videos, and in his children and grandchildren. Hopefully his legacy will one day help restore the lost freedoms he died trying to protect, finally allowing him to rest in peace.
I’d like to end this post on a lighter note, by sharing one of my favorite clips of Irwin, a man unappreciated by his country and left to die and elderly man, shackled to a cold hospital bed.

I recall watching Irwin Shiff on Tom Snyder as a teen after coming home from smoking weed and now munching of 3 Ball Park Hotdogs. He was on for like two nights and after I watched it I was like.. Hey this guy is right! Now, I may be put in prison for thinking that and being schackled in a bed... I also never knew he was his father. RIP

I didn't know Mr. Schiff. Could have been a mean rascal or a really nice guy but whatever, he did not deserve to die in the manner he did. As I had posted on this site long ago, I spent many years incarcerated in a maximum security facility. I can vouch that the above description of Mr. Schiff's last days was in no way unusual in how inmates are treated - at least the thousand plus that I 'lived' with.

Sometimes there are brave Jews that step out and take moral stands, and they should be applauded. Imagine how difficult it must be for them.

Personally, I came across Irwin’s works early in life and will credit him with a primary understanding of the pervasive deception entrenched by a trusting Republic in the offices being held by immoral and downright antagonistic individuals weaseling their way into the United States’ governmental structures.
As a Christian, I can appreciate persons wishing to identify their being here some shred of “physical” legitimacy by attempting to prove their having blood relations with the seed of Abraham destined to become the means by which all on earth gain access to the Father of Abraham, through the Priestly lineage of Melchizedek and line of royalty through descendancy of David, though I can have no such allusions for myself. I’ll settle for an opportunity to be considered adopted.
That being said, there is evidently a wide chasm between the 2.5% and the .001% able and willing to utilize whatever tools are at their current and temporary disposal to maintain the illusion of their divinity while their own opportunity to act in a more personally compassionate / redemptive and forgiving way seals their own eternal fate.
Not that Irwin would need to be “forgiven” his particular trespass against this enemy. From what I can tell from my limited vantage point, his was a life well spent. I’ll hope it’s not in vain.

Peter should honor his father's memory by admitting that the reason he did not visit his father more in prison was because Peter and other family members chose to not visit. Peter has the means to visit as often as he wanted.

I assume that Schiff is moderately wealthy so he has the means to visit if he wants to. A lot of his work is likely to be online so it is portable.
When my mother was in her eighties and ill I would fly for over an hour, take transit, walk the last half mile and stay in a hotel so I could visit her. If Schiff and other family members did not visit the old man it's because they made a choice to not visit him.
It makes me sick when people refuse to accept responsibility for the choices they make. Schiff is blaming the government for choices he and his father made.
Mister, you don't chain 87 year old people with cancer and close to death to a GD bed. That's not right and I don't give a shit about their choices at that time. They have allowed murderers to go home when in that condition and facing death to be with their family. They (Feds) were mocking him and his family,,, period.
Right or wrong Mr Schiff was more a man then any of the thousands in government that kept him locked up unlawfully.
Absalon never denied any of that. He showed no lack of respect for Mr Schiff.
He pointed out that the family had ways and means to visit the dying man. Come hell or high water I would have organised my family so at least one of us was visiting and providing comfort and family contact - probably with the financial aide of the other family members if needs be. Damned if I would let my Dad be left without every visitation opportunity possible. That is a core responsibility of a family.
I do however understand that years of incarceration wear families down - it was made clear in the article how this worked. Watching your Dad decay through overt neglect over many years has to be hell, it cannot be easily judged from the outside.

Our condolences to Schiff family for tragic loss at the hands of Big Gov. Now Peter's home State of CT is facing huge fiscal problems as a result of overspending which will lead to more taxes and hardship because we are not addressing problems created by Big Gov. on State and Fed level. RIP Irwin. Keep up the good work in exposing malpractice and fraud in financial system Peter.
It's sad that the US gov't has devolved into exactly what our founding fathers fought to escape. My condolences go out to the Schiff family, but i'm sure there is more to this story that we're not being told. hard to believe they'd ship this old guy to max security, isolate him from family and then chain him to his bed without there being something else going on.

I am a constitutional law researcheer with 30 years and over 60,000 hours invested. I am well aware of Mr Schiffs arguments against the so called income tax. YES the entire scheme is unconstitutional. But not within the context of the arguments he promoted. Notwithstanding, the feds decided to make an example of Mr Shiff. He was was all intensive purposes a political prisoner and the feds are responsible for what I consider premeditated murder. Those that truly understand the scope of federal corruption should know by now that nothing short of another bloody civil war will change anything. FUCK the government that pretends to trepresent us and FUCK the administrative agencies and the courts that have destroyed our national federal republic.

Kudos to Peter for honoring his father with the tribute, and being smart enough to realize his dad was not quite right. After all, Peter never subscribed to his father's follies and as far as I know, joins the rest of us in paying the feds every year in as few shekels as possible.
I've heard Peter say something like "I love my dad, but I wish he would have paid his taxes."
Pretty sure Peter thinks his dad is right, but sees there's no sense in another Schiff being a ruined political prisoner. His family knows all too well what happens when people get a little too truthful.

For those who missed the obvious subtlety, Irwin was a "Good Jew": He resisted the Zionist financial Ponzi to his death, while trying to teach and inspire others to do the same. Take a moment to reflect on that. And his son Peter is doing his best to do the same, while staying out of jail.
I've often thought that the "Good Jews", though few in number, are the bravest among us.

Watched the Libertarian convention one year when he was running for the presidential nomination, ultimately wasted, again, on Harry Browne, and the candidates were each asked if they did not get the nod whther they would support, and vote for, the Party's candidate. All said yes - but Schiff qualified his answer by saying of course he would support the candidate but "as a convicted felon I won't be voting for anyone."

There was a young girl given 5-15 for perjury for refusing to recant her testimony of sexual abuse by politicians in the Franklin Scandal, she refused further commenting saying that her family had been threatened and concidentally her 17 year old brother was found hung. Another male child also initially refused to recount his story and his brother was shot, to my knowledge that boy is still missing. Then there was the lead investigator who told his colleagues that he had the photographic proof of the Washington pedophile ring, his plane went down immediately afterward killing both him and his son.
That's America's justice system. Schiff knew what system he was dealing with and he took it on anyway because he had the salt. If everyone was as brave as those three we wouldn't be having too many of these problems anymore.
I tried the tax exempt thing in the 70's. It turns out it is easier to just use the rules they give you to pay as little tax as possible.

Let's be clear, he went to prison for tax evasion, not for writing books. While his punishment was beyond reasonable, he knew the potential consequences. For many old people, death is a blessing. We get old, our bodies wear out, things don't work like they once did. Lots of pain. Too many medicines. Hearing and eyesight problems. Incontinence. Bowel issues. Arthritis. Poor sleep. I could go on, but you get the picture. And I didn't even mention the more serious problems, just the pain in the ass ones. I suspected this would happen to Mr. Schiff. Prison healthcare is the absolute worse a human being can get. Especially in the for-profit prisons. What happened to Mr. Schiff is commonplace in the prison system, and if that doesn't constitute "CRUEL AND UNUSUAL PUNISHMENT", I don't know what does. Funny how Obozo and his Department of Just-us is releasing thousands of drug dealers onto the streets in a couple of weeks from federal prisons, but Mr. Schiff was not on their list. Just goes to show what their agenda is.

it was to his mothers surprise that he appeared in a taxi in front of her house..............bleeding from every oriface
on his last legs and dying from, well, i'm not sure, something with complications with hep-c
his mother knew what the government was up to and refused to accept the taxi charges
the taxi promptly returned him to the jail who was then forced to send him to the hospital where he died several days later
since he had been sent return to sender, he was still listed as a prisoner where the government had to cover the hospital costs, and having died in their care
Irwin Schiff was the L Ron Hubbard of tax law.

In questioning the right of government to help itself to as much of your income as it decides fit Schiff committed the ultimate crime. What he espoused, to governments, is much worse than pedophilia or murder. He didn't die chained to a hospital bed as a result of a slow bureaucracy, and was not pardoned as an oversight, but as the deliberate acts of a system determined to punish a heretic to the end.
In fact his crime was so heinous that trolls like Ex Cathedra are paid to keep persecuting Schiff into the grave and beyond.

A true PATRIOT. He sacrifices himself to protect the core value. He protested in peace, in return he was treated in the most undignified way.
Sad thing is about Irwin was, he thought to highly of his fellow Americans. He placed them on the same level as himself. He thought that if he was to get the message out, they would listen, and they would respond. Oh sure, they bought his books, and a few even applied the principals contained therein, but the majority DID NOTHING. I think that if he could have seen into the future, and known how his demise would have gone down, he would have gone down fighting, and not been taken alive. Those are the lessons we can take from Irwin Schiff.
He could do no other. he was not thinking about strategy. He thought of a principle and he could not resist standing for it. And the reason we know this is because of his continued support for his principle even to the last. He was surrounded by enemies and still he stood. But his and others' examples are leading today to the end of the Fed - you can read it here in Zero Hedge.

This is my take. The very purpose of LIFE is for the EVOLUTION of the HUMAN SPIRIT. A truly humane, enlightened, and civil society would NEVER lock another human in a cage nor would they create finishing schools for criminals. Removal from society as punishment for violent crime is reasonable. Banishment with minimal resources for survival based on individuals abilities is reasonable. Giving a person time to think about the wrongs and injuries they have inflicted gives a person the ability to contemplate change in behavior as a means to true spiritual growth. Imprisionment is in fact TORTURE in a spiritual sense and is therfore a crime against life itself.
Where was the violence in the so cqlled crime at issue here? WHO was the victim? Why was an old man locked in a cage until death??? IS THIS JUSTICE OR RETRIBUTION?? IS THIS HUMANE OR IS IT EVIL??
