Good Luck, Canada

Tyler Durden's picture

In the aftermath of Justin Trudeau whopping defeat of conservative Stephen Harper, and the resurgence of liberal Canada, all we can say is: good luck Canada, you'll need it. From Reuters:

The US has seen that movie before, it's not a happy ending. Oh, and enjoy that AAA credit rating while it lasts.

* * *

On a more serious note, here is the full post-mortem, pardon the pun, of the Canadian elections from Bank of America:

Liberals win with a majority of seats

The Liberal party won the Canadian election with an estimated 184 seats out of 338 (as this goes to print), ousting the ruling Conservatives. The Liberals were expected to win a minority of seats, so the majority victory comes as a surprise. Liberal leader Justin Trudeau will become the new Prime Minister, commanding the confidence of the majority of Parliament. The change of government should largely keep Canada’s business-friendly environment in tact: Liberals want to keep corporate taxes low, and the party supports the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) free trade deal, as well as most major pipeline projects. However, a push for carbon and environmental regulation by the Liberal government could be negative for the energy sector.

Near-term uncertainty, medium-term small GDP boost

In the near-term, the change of government adds to policy uncertainty, especially as Justin Trudeau is an untested leader at the Federal level. However, over the medium term, the Liberals’ plan of running modest deficits for three years should be a small positive for the economic outlook. The GDP impact of the Liberals’ proposed spending plan is challenging to estimate, given uncertainties about multiplier effects. If we assume a multiplier range of 0.5 to 2.0 (a 0.5 multiplier means $1 of spending adds 50 cents to GDP), the Liberals’ announced deficits of just under $10bn/year could add 0.1pp-0.3pp to GDP growth in 2016 and 0.1pp-0.5pp to GDP growth in 2017. Greater government spending will, on the margin, reduce the need for monetary policy easing.

Limited risks of fiscal deterioration

Canada’s sovereign credit rating, currently AAA, depends on a number of factors, including economic activity, commodity prices and fiscal discipline. We see limited risks of a notable deterioration in fiscal health resulting from the Liberal victory:

  • On October 14th, ratings agency Moody’s published a note that the election was unlikely to change the creditworthiness of the federal government, regardless of which party wins the election.
  • The Liberal plan for deficits of around 0.5% of GDP is modest. Also, the plan is to end deficits by 2019, suggesting only a temporary period of higher spending.

With a majority of seats, we think it should be relatively straightforward for Liberals to implement their platform: there is no need to court votes from other parties to pass the budget, as would be the case under a minority government. Thus, we see less risk of fiscal slippage and less uncertainty in budgetary implementation.

Next steps

Although the House of Commons is technically scheduled to open in late November, we think it is more likely that the House returns in late January 2016, allowing time for new Liberal ministers to be sworn in and learn their files. To open the new session, Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau will deliver the Throne Speech, outlining the government’s goals. Throne Speech is a confidence motion, but since the Liberals have a Parliamentary majority, the speech will pass. The budget will likely be released in the spring of 2016, with implementation likely starting in the summer.

WOLCOTT, Conn. —Authorities say they seized 60 cats and a pair of dogs from a Connecticut home in an apparent animal hoarding case in which the homeowner was trying to run a cat rescue.

WTNH reports that police found the animals in Wolcott Friday.

Sgt. Patrick Malloy says authorities received complaints from neighbors about an odor coming from the residence and bags of garbage containing cat feces that littered the property. He says the inside is "unlivable."

Police say the owner was trying to run a cat rescue and may face animal cruelty charges. Several cats were underweight and dehydrated. All of the animals are being checked out.

In other news, Canada boycotts the US by refusing to sell 8 million barrels of crude oil per day.  Pentagon decided to rendition the new Canadian  Chancellor, sending him to Guantanamo to educate him on waterboarding.  Oil mysteriously flows again...

Not sure I understand the point to that but it does sound like fun. I have one yard cat left, the others are flat or coyote shit but this lone retarded cat will not die. I'll need a partner in crime as trying to drive while wrestling a furball full of claws is maybe not optimal. Maybe I will bring the dog along. Fun fact: yes, we have voter ID laws here. Problem is, you don't need proof of citizenship, just proof you live in the electoral district. A passport isn't even good as ID (it doesn't have an address on it).

You can get your name put on the list that way, sure (they ask on the T1 form, rough equivalent of the US IRS form 1040). You can also register on the day you show up to vote as long as you have an ID with your name, photo and current address.

What they don't do is ask you to prove citizenship with a passport, birth certificate or citizenship card.

Will Durant talks about when too many foreigners enter a nation it gets stronger in some ways but also weaker in some ways since the new migrants do not have the same values as the natives and also they are not as loyal to the new country. Can you see the Pakistani Abdul in Vancouver fighting for Canada? or the Shenzhen Wang Ho defending Canada?

We're gonna see serious changes in the West due to the massive flood of immigrants/refugees. i suggest everyone read some of Durant to see what's going to happen.

If you take the exact definition of communism you are correct but there has never been a communist government in the history of the world.

Communism always manifests itself in the perverted form the commies bring to its citizens. Yes, in the US we have plenty of fascism but the communists bring their tyranny of government over the citizen. Fascism is just greed sanctioned by government, communism will take your freedom, property, rights and your money.

Ok, let's see what you just wrote there:

"Fascism is just greed sanctioned by government, communism will take your freedom, property, rights and your money."

How the fuck do you know what communism will do to you, when in your first sentence you admit there's never been a communist gov. in the history of the world? OTOH, this world has seen quite a few examples of fascism in the past century and they all operate on the same auctoritarian postulates of anti-individualism, hawkish romanticism and (mildly put) utter disrespect for any and all political opponents (besides taking away your freedom and rights).

The biggest problem with the world today is half-educated MSM-parrotting useful dickwits like you, sir, that are running TPT(S)B's errands by rooting for one type of Big Gubbermint on the expence of the other.

Lol, what a limp strawman you got there! Have you never ever in your pathetic life come across a definition of 'communism'? Well, I certainly don't blame you but the ruthless state-sponsored propaganda that you've been brainwashed with every single day of your life (remember McCarthy? Well, he's still alive!!!)

Here, let me help you with some different definitions so you can find a common denominator: Encyclopaedia Britannica, Merriam-Webster, The Legal Dictionary...

You operate on false premises, dude: communism as an ideology is mutually exclusive with terms like 'government' and 'state'. As such, you were right about one thing only - there has never existed a truly communist society in modern day civilization (and it never will, simply because humans are mere apes with thumbs).

And why in the world do you think I'm Murican?

My entire point RS.

Which is why I cite 'communism' in the vernacular for which it stands.

All the leftists become so offended when the words, 'socialist' and 'communist' are used in their true context and cluck that the words are being used incorrectly, but the reality of those belief systems always become what they really are - oppressive, dictatorial, murdering government.

You’ll have a very hard time educating anyone (from US) on the topic of ideologies – you’re against decades of corporate propaganda and ‘new-speak’. In US everything related to state/statism/public etc. is the same as or related to socialism/communism/Marxism/progressivism etc. (all terms that in their ‘intellectual tradition’ have morphed into one undistinguishable mass). There is no conception of a ‘capitalist state’ – it’s an oxymoron in their vocabulary.

Tue, 10/20/2015 - 10:26 | 6689327 swmnguy

Yeah, this is a common, and very intentional, problem for us in the US.  Our vocabulary has been debauched and distorted over the past few generations to the point that most of our political terminology has no meaning.  In the modern era it started with the words "Socialist" and "Communist," which have come to mean "Everything I don't personally like."  There was a reaction in the 1960s, when "Fascism" came to refer either to high-school football coaches, police, or anyone who tells the young to get a haircut and a job.

Then it got serious, when Republican operatives like William Safire and Frank Luntz set out to turn "Liberal" into a word that meant "Communist" to most people.  "Liberal" came to describe a cartoon image of an excessively generous welfare state, intensive government control over private interests, ridiculously sentimental social policies, and a weak, effeminate, ineffectual overall nature.  Why they chose "Liberal" is hard to understand, as all politicians in the US are "Liberal" by definition, except maybe Bernie Sanders or, possibly, Ron Paul.

Now the Humpty-Dumpty-esque usage of words (to mean whatever you want them to mean) has carried through to make words meaningless such as "Conservative," "Terrorist," "Progressive," and most other political terms.  In Business, words that no longer mean anything include "Accountability," among others.

The overall goal is to prevent people from being able to even discuss political and business ideas.  If they can't discuss them, they can't determine truth from falsehood.  If "The State" is demonized (except for police and the military, of course), then by default the only positive values come from corporate interests.

It's working very well.

Living on the Canadian border I swim with Canadians at my pool. They're very proud of their country. They're very proud as individuals. This was Harper's downfall.  He became despised for failing to adequately measure the pride of Canadians, as he reached out and far too inexcusably fawned over the much larger world around him.

The great irony of life is that it all seems so seamless, so cogent, and so matter of fact from everyone's individual perspective.

Even for the people fleeing from Syria right now, in China as they daily expect riots and marching revolutionaries to fill the streets, and even for some pickaninny living on the murderous border between the Hootsie and the Tutu in deepest darkest Africa, the whole universe seems to have been fashioned to each of them, for each of them, to live out their predestined lives just as God planned it all just for them.

LoL!  Justin Trudeau is a name that will forever live in Canadian infamy.  Trudeaumania is going to end up being just another small delusional, imaginary, altruist-kingdom along the roadway that heads to yet another common crackpot "hope and change" progressive purgatory.  That path is well worn by wide-grinning politicians with a great deal of public exposure, surrounded by a great many certified experts, none of whom have even one ounce of practical experience in anything other than getting their clueless hero elected.

Curious how Stevie's lackluster campaign back then took off like a shot after that meeting. Same thing happened to Obama on June 6 2008 in Chantilly Virginia.

When you believe that there is no more productive capacity left in the economy, the focus turns to "spreading the wealth around" of what's left.

Public support for leftists is a transparent indication of the desperation in society. A democratic level display of mobs in the streets, knocking down doors and taking what they can.

When your primary belief is that there is no future in working for a living and the only avenue of survival is TAKING, not EARNING, then our economy, our future is cooked.

"When you believe that there is no more productive capacity left in the economy"

The problem, my friend, is not that there is no more productive capacity; the problem is there are far too few who want to bother to invest their money, and especially their time, in a new venture.

Why bother? All you get is vilified for trying to get rich, bled to death by a thousand paper cuts (or paper forms, take your pick), and once you reach a certain size, the unions camp out on your door to get in the tent to take what's left.

Ayn Rand was a crackpot in many ways, but she was right about human nature and work. Let people live relatively comfortably by doing nothing, and a whole lotta them will choose to do.. nothing. Attach leeches to everyone who's trying to be productive, and watch how the life slowly/not so slowly is drained from them. An increasing number of people are going "semi-Galt" - they still live in society, but they take menial jobs, milk the system for everything they can, and squirrel away supplies for when TSHTF. They don't create new businesses, new jobs, or new opportunities.

It's so sad because we are really on the verge of a golden age, where machines do the drudge work, where the price of most 'stuff' deflates each year as we get better and better at building things, and where humans are free to live and create. Sure, there's gonna be a lot of people who sit on their asses, but we could be so rich that it wouldn't matter. But of course, Jamie and Lloyd need another, bigger boat, another mistress or 3, a couple more mansions that they never spend any time at.

I agree; we're cooked. Glad I'm old.

rant begins here: on a plane trip from vancouver, a housewife from vancouver had a rather loud conversation with a housewife from wisconsin discussing differences between canada and us socialism.  all they yakked about was what goodies were for free in US and CA, there was 5 or 6 grand free money for each child in canada, free this, free that, obammascare gave near-free medical insurance for $75 a month to the US one.   then the canadian said she was glad to pay 30% tax rate on HER HUSBANDS INCOME for all the goodies.  No skin off ner nose, it was the poor schlubs money.  There is no need for men, no sense of earning their way, just entitlement, as these women use the government as a proxy to forcibly extract money, whether they are married or not.  Clearly, socialist american and canadian women with voting rights and no sense of responsibility/justice are the root cause of fall of the west.  imo

Is it no small coincidence that while we have seen massive women's liberation, we still see women protecting their sense of entitlement, of being "cared for" by the opposite sex. We see this even in homosexual relationships where the masculine is expected to be the protector if not provider. I think this is nature at work, but of course, we can only recognize those parts of our nature that bolster a progressive ideology. To take it to its obvious ends, it would also imply that a "women's perspective" in government would definitely change things, not all for the better.

Women have always had power in society, but in our past we have typically allowed nature to define our roles, whereas today, ideology replaces nature with a more perfect plan, that NO ONE knows the outcome. As we saw with Mao, making farmers into doctors and doctors into farmers definitely accomplished his goals, but also led to mass starvation and death...an unfortunate consequence of displacing the natural world with one fabricated from the mind of idealists. Women and homosexuals serving in combat roles in the military. It sounds great, equal rights and all that.Who could be against that...except the entire history of humanity? We can embrace evolution until it provides a result we don't like. We will call nature evil and unjust, as the lion eats the antelope. We will always reflect this back at man, like it is OUR responsibility to restore fairness in the world, like we can be anything else but what and who we are. We have always pretty much understood what the rules had to be to survive, but those are pretty much gone now. We don't need those stinkin old rules. We got new ones now, not written on stone tablets, but by a pen, in the hand of a greater thinker and scholar who massaged his brain with dope while developing his great plans for our salvation, our "correction", all encased in "hope and change".

We shall see...
