Good Luck, Canada

Tyler Durden's picture

In the aftermath of Justin Trudeau whopping defeat of conservative Stephen Harper, and the resurgence of liberal Canada, all we can say is: good luck Canada, you'll need it. From Reuters:

The US has seen that movie before, it's not a happy ending. Oh, and enjoy that AAA credit rating while it lasts.

* * *

On a more serious note, here is the full post-mortem, pardon the pun, of the Canadian elections from Bank of America:

Liberals win with a majority of seats

The Liberal party won the Canadian election with an estimated 184 seats out of 338 (as this goes to print), ousting the ruling Conservatives. The Liberals were expected to win a minority of seats, so the majority victory comes as a surprise. Liberal leader Justin Trudeau will become the new Prime Minister, commanding the confidence of the majority of Parliament. The change of government should largely keep Canada’s business-friendly environment in tact: Liberals want to keep corporate taxes low, and the party supports the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) free trade deal, as well as most major pipeline projects. However, a push for carbon and environmental regulation by the Liberal government could be negative for the energy sector.

Near-term uncertainty, medium-term small GDP boost

In the near-term, the change of government adds to policy uncertainty, especially as Justin Trudeau is an untested leader at the Federal level. However, over the medium term, the Liberals’ plan of running modest deficits for three years should be a small positive for the economic outlook. The GDP impact of the Liberals’ proposed spending plan is challenging to estimate, given uncertainties about multiplier effects. If we assume a multiplier range of 0.5 to 2.0 (a 0.5 multiplier means $1 of spending adds 50 cents to GDP), the Liberals’ announced deficits of just under $10bn/year could add 0.1pp-0.3pp to GDP growth in 2016 and 0.1pp-0.5pp to GDP growth in 2017. Greater government spending will, on the margin, reduce the need for monetary policy easing.

Limited risks of fiscal deterioration

Canada’s sovereign credit rating, currently AAA, depends on a number of factors, including economic activity, commodity prices and fiscal discipline. We see limited risks of a notable deterioration in fiscal health resulting from the Liberal victory:

  • On October 14th, ratings agency Moody’s published a note that the election was unlikely to change the creditworthiness of the federal government, regardless of which party wins the election.
  • The Liberal plan for deficits of around 0.5% of GDP is modest. Also, the plan is to end deficits by 2019, suggesting only a temporary period of higher spending.

With a majority of seats, we think it should be relatively straightforward for Liberals to implement their platform: there is no need to court votes from other parties to pass the budget, as would be the case under a minority government. Thus, we see less risk of fiscal slippage and less uncertainty in budgetary implementation.

Next steps

Although the House of Commons is technically scheduled to open in late November, we think it is more likely that the House returns in late January 2016, allowing time for new Liberal ministers to be sworn in and learn their files. To open the new session, Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau will deliver the Throne Speech, outlining the government’s goals. Throne Speech is a confidence motion, but since the Liberals have a Parliamentary majority, the speech will pass. The budget will likely be released in the spring of 2016, with implementation likely starting in the summer.

We all love a good liar. We will give our all to those who will tell us what we want to hear and believe. It requires the best liars to actually convince us enough to BELIEVE. The abandonment of the rational mind for a simple and desirable belief system....the things history is made of.

Well if Justin Trudeau gets stuck on his way to completely fucking up Canada he can always ask Obozo for some advice.

In fact he should invite Barry to come up and give him a hand in the destruction. Barry enjoys shit like that almost as much as golf!

This is America's future. Many thought that one term of Obama would be enough to illuminate the falacy of thought, and then he was elected again.

Right now, many of us see the impending doom facing us and can't imagine America electing someone even more destructive of our constitution, of our liberty, of our economy...but they will.

Society is infected to its roots with "something for nothing", a virus that lives within all of us. Only now, through deliberately destructive government policies, the body is weakened so as to give this virus a real advantage. We will see this progress like a zombie plague. Once bitten by the destructive effects of this dying economy, the zombie characteristics take hold relatively quickly, driving even more to want to take a bite out of the remaining living flesh that represents the remainder of the economy. We will pile on more taxes, more penalties, more rules and regulations on businesses that see as their only options to either downsize the labor and overhead, or quickly adopt the zombie mentality and strive to be the biggest eater of them all.

There is a momentum to this, an irreversible direction, a cycle that must be followed that hopefully will see an upside at some point, if we don't all kill ourselves first.

You mean like all religions are the same?

Think about your own inevitability of death. You know you are going to die, so the how an the when are irrelevant, right?

You probably though the same about a spouse...I mean they are all the same, right?

Suggesting that everything is the same is lazy thinking that has as its primary goal the avoidance of personal responsibility for choice.

Yes life does seem futile. Is suicide the only rational choice?

We are so screwed.  His father pretty much bankrupt the country, and it took two decades to crawl our way back to merely indebted from destitute. He is just the face for the back room boys. But unfortunately, the Liberals pander to every politically-correct thought that crosses their paths. Look for us to become another Isamic country over the next decade.

However, it doesn't matter who is in there. The only difference is the speed with which they empty our wallets and put our figurative grandchildren into debt shackles.  Nothing will change unless we somehow put in place a system that requires balanced budgets and approval from the voters for any change in spending or taxes. Enough with this 'carte blanche' for 4 years.  Sadly, this will never come about without force because those immoral and unethical wizened old politicos behind the scenes will never give up power without a fight.  And, Canadians are not fighters.

You are a fucking moron. Chretien's 'magic surplus' came from:

  • A US consumption boom based on the Reagan provided, Clinton credit taken 'peace dividend'
  • The NAFTA agreement that Mulroney created, and Chretien took credit for (after running against it, typical of the lying shit)
  • The Mulroney GST that Chretien vowed to kill but of course kept as soon he saw how much money it was bringing in (see above re: lying shit)
  • Downloading many costs from the federal gov't to the provinces, which has ruined the credit ratings of many
  • hiking taxes like UI premiums and running a huge surplus on those while reducing UI benefits in areas that weren't solidly Liberal

Meanwhile, Harper had to deal with the largest recession since the Great Depression. If he hadn't run a deficit, every Liberal, NDP, BQ and Greenie would have been frothing at the mouth.

By almost every standard, Canada has weathered the "Great Recession" better than any OECD country - employment, deficits, GDP growth, what have you.

Harper's social and other policies were often wrong, but he cannot be faulted on his economic performance.

Another moron.

The deficits were DEMANDED and APPROVED by the liberals and NDP.   That's what happens in a minority government.  It wasn't until Harper got a majority that they were able to get deficits under control.

Example is the first 2008 budget had a $26 billion deficit.  But the Libs and NDP got together and formed a coalition to try and take over the government because the deficit wasn't big enough.  After the dust settled, the Libs and NDP demanded and approved the new 2008 budget at $56 bullion. Same for the next 5 budgets.

You are a typical blind and brainless progressive.

Maybe the Liberals will cancel all the Military spending?  Stop buying fighters from the US??  Thats gotta be good for $10 Billion right there.

AAA rating secure.

But seriously what the fuck?!  Half the articles on this site describe the death of the US Middle Class.  Harper (he is the outgoing PM) was following the US script to the letter and now he is gone.  So there may be a chance for some people to claw their way back into the Middle Class or else stay there.

Final note.  Canada has had Liberal governments before and the country survived.  Canada's best fiscal surplus since 1963 was during the Chretien administration.  He was Liberal.  Canada's worst fiscal deficit?  While Harper was in power.  Harper liked to blather about Balanced Budget but he only had a surplus in 2 of his 9 years in power.

But no worries, one of his key advisors is Larry Summers

He won a majority with ~39.5% of the vote

There is no comparison in that Reagan was an actor in his younger years; he did not go directly from Hollywood to president of the US.

Trudeau on the other hand went from high school drama teacher to liberal party leader to prime minister in very very short order, due only to his name.  He actually had to slow down the process.

As far as Reagan's performance as leader that's open to debate.  That was not the point.

Canadian voters probably didn't like that conservatives lied about balancing the budget before the election. This is a status quo move by the electorate. AAA rating was due to the Liberals balancing the budget before Conservatives were voted in. This was not a 'hope and change' platform. The Conservatives really and I mean, really screwed up their election prospects.

The Harper government was a government of 2: Stephen Harper and his MIRROR. Government scientists were NOT ALLOWED to speak to the press; CABINET MINISTERS were NOT ALLOWED to speak to the press without being handed their talking point scripts from the prime minister's office. Freedom of the press didn't matter because there was only one opinion that was permitted, and spoon-fed to the press. If democracy improves in Canada, then they will let the press stand outside the door at cabinet meetings and ask any question they want when the members exit the room (which was how things were done before Stephen Harper's government).

Censorship already is alive and well now throughout the Internet.  Google and the US government have a program whereby all knowledge must now be pre-approved by search algorithm. It’s called Knowledge Vault and screens and censors information requested by Google's users. Natural News reports that “by sorting through the actual content of websites to determine whether or not they fit the official narrative for the particular idea or concept presented, the Knowledge Vault will act as a type of knowledge gatekeeper in censoring out information and content deemed to be "false."
In short, “What you're actually searching for is irrelevant:Google will tell you what it wants you to know. "[The Knowledge Vault] promises to let Google answer questions like an oracle rather than a search engine, and even to turn a new lens on human history," wrote Hal Hodson for NewScientist about the project. It is this latter statement that's deeply concerning, as Google now has the power to literally rewrite history by snubbing search content of which the powers that be disapprove, while approving only propaganda and other misinformation dubbed "accurate." This evolution from information provider to knowledge developer changes the entire nature of Google's purpose as a company.”

the problem was the MSM in Canada is so left-wing, so biased, and so anti-Harper that without complete control of the agenda, the media shills would have a field day.

Case in point: twenty years ago, when Quebec separatism was still alive, a tiny group of protestors in Ontario stomped on a Quebec flag. It happened in Brockville, a town of less than 20,000 at the time. It happened once.

The act was replayed over and over and over again in Quebec by the supposedly 'neutral' and government funded Radio-Canada (the french version of the CBC), for months after the actual event.

And that's what happened with a LIBERAL gov't in office. the BS that's happened to Harper is ridiculous.

For example, in this campaign, someone videoed a Tory candidate (no doubt with prostate problems) in an emergency grabbing a coffee cup and pissing in it before dumping it in the sink. Now, I have prostate problems, and I can tell you, when you gotta go, you gotta go. 20 feet to the toilet might not work! but this was trumped up into some "sensational" scandal. Meanwhile, a Liberal candidate wrote to a critic on social media "Too bad your mom didn't have a coat-hanger". the CBC's response?

crickets.

Who can choose between warmongers and welfare fanatics? Where's the chance for a voter to support real ethical leadership? Harper is pro-Israel, anti-Muslim to the extreme, opposed to the Iranian peace agreement and pro-Mid East war, while Trudeau is a tax and spend anti-people "environmentalist." The most critical damage from the Trudeau victory will be the Canadian radical "climate change" programs, helping to lead the world into a socialist world order using this pre-planned faux-crisis.

As for the statement, a push for carbon and environmental regulation by the Liberal government could be negative for the energy sector, it certainly will be negative for free speech:

France’s Top TV Weatherman Suspended for Criticising Climate Dogma  | What’s Up With That, The world’s most viewed site on global warming and climate change

Eric Worrall / 5 days ago October 15, 2015

Philippe Verdier, weather chief at France Télévisions, the country’s state broadcaster, has been suspended for publicly criticising Climate Alarmism.

According to The Telegraph;

Every night, France’s chief weatherman has told the nation how much wind, sun or rain they can expect the following day.

Now Philippe Verdier, a household name for his nightly forecasts on France 2, has been taken off air after a more controversial announcement – criticising the world’s top climate change experts.
Mr Verdier claims in the book Climat Investigation (Climate Investigation) that leading climatologists and political leaders have “taken the world hostage” with misleading data.

In a promotional video, Mr Verdier said: “Every night I address five million French people to talk to you about the wind, the clouds and the sun. And yet there is something important, very important that I haven’t been able to tell you, because it’s neither the time nor the place to do so.”

He added: “We are hostage to a planetary scandal over climate change – a war machine whose aim is to keep us in fear.”

Frankly I’m shocked. Just a few months ago, January this year, in the wake of a horrifying terrorist attack on their offices, France rallied to support Charlie Hebdo’s freedom of expression, their freedom to satirise and speak out on sensitive issues such as religion. France prides herself that no subject is taboo. But apparently offending the Climate Taliban is a step too far – that gets you suspended from your government job.

France’s motto, Liberté, égalité, fraternité – except when you want to talk about climate change.

Okay, SweetDoug, Harper is a Reform Party functionary that was utilized by the oil industry in Alberta to take over Parliament and funnel Federal subsidy into promotion, and production, of Athabasca Oil Sands(tm). When the Reform-in-Pantyhose Party failed to make gains in

CANADA the BIG oil backers of the neocons moved to form the Reform-in-Pantyhose Party into the Alliance Party so they could gather up all who were on the Progressive Conservative side of politics

in CANADA. The takeover of the 1st federal political party in CANADA was initiated by BIG Oil & the neocons at that juncture due to the fact that there was no effin' fucking way that the Progressive Conservative Party of CANADA membership would possibly go along quietly with the plans of the Council on Foreign Relations, or their plans under PNAC proposals. The vote for the takeover of the Progressive Conservative Party was illegal under the terms set out by David Orchard & Peter 'sucks cock' MacKay, but the vote was rigged, and the illegal election was held, and Harper was ushered into POWER to corrupt ABSOLUTELY for a decade of neocon rule in North America, and the Middle East.

When the cocksucker neocons pulled this coup-de'tat I gathered up all my evidence and reported the fraudulent vote to Major Crimes Division of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, but the Harper Conservatives had a lawyer in Elections CANADA tell me that there was nothing that Elections CANADA, or the RCMP Major Crimes Unit could do about the fraudulent vote because 'they considered it an internal party matter' and not a matter for the Federal Court of CANADA.

That's how they pulled it off, SweetDoug.

No more meddling in the middle east and no more bombing innocent civilians... no more refugee creating, terrorist enabling, financialy ruinous foreign wars.

Decriminalizing pot and no more jailing for victimless crimes.... a return to budgetary surpluses (like last time they inherited a fiscal mess from the NeoCons)

This election was more about the style of Government and the gradual erasure of the Middle Class as Harper followed the US script (cut Corporate taxes and everything will work out...Adam Smith told me this in a dream).

Keep dreaming. Even Alberta is being taken over by leftists in our two big cities. The cancer seems to spread from universities and to affect people who never have to do any real work.

The sad part about democracy ("the road to socialism") is that the left drags the right down with them. What motivation do we have to work to support the parasites? The right must wither and get very sick for the left to die. The only alternative is to use FORCE against them, which we are no longer allowed/able to do.

If immigration wasn't an issue, we could survive this by waiting it out. But it's looking like the left might succeed in turning Canada into a multicultural Muslim country first. And then we're all toast.

In summary, the outlook is bleak. Don't underestimate how cucked Canadians are. Many would join a revolution, but we're nowhere near starting one.

It's worked for a long time.  What has screwed Canada is not the Oil price drop but the cuts in Corporate taxes so we can have a "level playing field" plus the elmination of tariffs via the Trade Agrements.

Harper also ramped up Military Spending, always great for balancing the budget.

Normally more trade is a good thing when one contry has a competitive advantage making some products.  But when a country has an advantage making ANY/ALL products because they pay slave wages....bye bye Middle Class.

The problem is that there is no alternative to hoping big government is going to save you.  There are no jobs.  There is no safety net.

It's not surprising people are voting for what they think is going to aid their survival.  All the tough talk about bootstraps and toughing it out and rich people deserve to rule from the other side is not winning any friends.

Not that it matters, right?  As if the bureaucracy is ever going to stop.

Now that Barry cannot run the states into the ground any longer he should become a Canadian citiczen and join the liberal party of Canada.  The hope and changers in that group would toss their current favorite son of their favorite father and Barry could run the "hope and change" movement in Canada into the ground.

Barry could run his hopy changy, marxist banker, big insurance, bigger government agenda without hint of opposition.  Best of all Canadians would vote for him forever because they are far too enlightened to actually judge a person of some color by their actions and results.

No problem, we'll build one. As your country sinks inevitably to second place, we expect the usual acting out small children indulge in. We have been watching you for a long time you know.

I understand Trudeau wants to even bring back long gun registration.

Standard Disclaimer: What are you going to do? Throw empty Molson bottles when someone breaks into your home?

In other words, you stupid fuckwad, you're defenseless. Sharia/winter is coming.

Um, come out to the west.  It's not exactly like anyone followed that rule even when we had it last time.  We just don't flaunt our guns around or talk about it much.  But I don't know many people that don't own at least a couple guns.  The ones that are registered were just for legal hunting purposes.  We can defend ourselves just fine.

Big spending on infrastructure projects coming and deficit funding to back it for at least a few years. They must be expecting significant revenues from the coming legalization of pot by taking a shot at organized crime and keeping the money from government taxes or maybe expecting large numbers of Americans heading north to buy their high-test weed?

They never learn....the politicians of every stripe will screw them from here to eternity and back again.

Political atheism is my motto - don't believe in any of their damn lies - and everything they utter is a lie.

I don't think Trudeau is bright enought to be some kind of global NWO mastermind.  He will need to be careful about who is advising him, and that's likely where he will make some bad decision helping the NWO, but in order to purporsly destroy a country, you have to be able to come up with a plan.  Something he is certainly not able to do.

The positive thing is that we got rid of Harper.  Choices were between Harper, Trudeau, or a better leader (Mulcair) with a way to far leftist agenda.
