PM-Elect Of 'US Ally' Canada Wastes No Time: Tells Obama Will Withdraw Fighter Jets From Syria, Iraq

Tyler Durden's picture

With the ink still damp on voter slips, newly crowned elected Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau wasted no time in fulfilling the first of his liberal "hope" and "change" promises. As AFP reports, hours after defeating Stephen Harper, Trudeau has told US President Obama that he will withdraw Canadian fighter jets from Syria and Iraq, though giving no timeline. So far, the US response is a mutedly diplomatic but tinged with guilt, "We have stood shoulder to shoulder with Canadian armed forces... in Iraq and Afghanistan," from the US State Department.

"About an hour ago I spoke with President Obama," Trudeau told a press conference.

While Canada remains "a strong member of the coalition against ISIL," Trudeau said he made clear to the US leader "the commitments I have made around ending the combat mission."

Canada last year deployed CF-18 fighter jets to the region until March 2016, as well as about 70 special forces troops to train Kurds in northern Iraq.

During the campaign, Trudeau pledged to bring home the fighter jets and end its combat mission. But he vowed to keep military trainers in place.

His new Liberal government will be "moving forward with our campaign commitments in a responsible fashion," Trudeau said.

"We want to ensure that the transition is done in an orderly fashion."

Earlier on Tuesday, as Sputnink News reports, the US State Department addressed questions as to whether or not it was concerned that Canada's new government may not support US foreign policy regarding IS presence in Afghanistan.

"These are all decisions the Canadian people have to make and Canadian legislators have to make... and their Prime Minister [has to make]," department spokesperson John Kirby told reporters.

"We have stood shoulder to shoulder with Canadian armed forces…in Iraq and Afghanistan," he added.

*  *  *

While this move seems like a hope-y and change-y step forward, the lack of timeline leaves plenty of room for the neocons to knock on Trudea's door and shower gifts on an economy floundering on the verge of "Emerging Market" status (as HSBC analysts warned).

Justin has to suck up to NATO and comply with voter promises to stop assisting the USA/Israel affront to civilization via constant aggression and war in third world countries. He was voted in on a mandate to give the middle finger to the American & Israeli neocons like Paul Wolfowitz et al.

And the Russian Federation is bright enough not to piss me off IMHO.

He is going to do the same as Harper.  He will simply make us look stupid.  Tell Putin off? Sorry Justin but you are nothing even close to Putin.  Putin is actually what we call a man, that isn't from a whore of a mom and a asshole of a father (fingers the west.  Asshole).  He will make us look just as stupid as Harper did.

There was no one to vote for.  Two sides to the same coin.

My thoughts exactly. Canadians chose THIS dink to represent them on the international stage?  Then again, would you rather see Putin face off with Mulcair or Elizabeth May?

Canada is a political backwater. That said, there are things going on behind the scenes to suggest that the nation is not going to be the same old lap dog in years to come.

All for show, and I'm sure Putin gets that. Those two are going to meet up soon and Canada's historic role as a bridge between the USSR and USA will be part of the conversation. After all, that's a big part of his dad's legacy, which I'm sure both are aware of.

At this point in time Canada has more in common with Russia than the USA. We just can't say it openly without causing major problems, but the awareness is there, and again... I'm sure Putin gets it.

The tougher nut to crack will be Canada's relationship with Israel, but that's coming too - maybe not just yet, but soon.

I talked to a lot of people in the run-up, in fact I twisted a few arms as well, which is very unlike me. That record turnout you saw was people like myself who have one thing on their mind: Canada's foreign policy.

Make no mistake, we'll be expressing that at every turn, and if this new government doesn't get it, they will quickly lose their majority, if not the next election, which I'm sure they're smart enough to realize. That's what I take from all of this - not what happens tomorrow, but four years from now.

That's what made him reconsider politics, and why he just up and quit the whole neocon mess. I have met John Baird at a political gathering for my political party, and I have campaigned to get one individual that I know into the riding that John Baird held federally. Baird was assisting to get the same individual in on the provincial level for the Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario. Our hopeful candidate lost to the provincial incumbent candidate in the Liberal Party. Baird was a Federal Conservative Party Cabinet Minister that held numerous portfolios. I do not have a membership to the Federal Conservative Party, but I am a card carrying Progressive Conservative provincially.

Justin(e) is a spoiled brat with a famous prevoius country leader for a father (sounds like GWB) who in two attempts could not even get a Bachelor's degree at two separate Universities.  He is Canada's version of hopeless change - a starry eyed idealist who thinks that telling off Putin to his face, or rubbing American noses in the dirt is going to help him achieve tangible positive outcomes for Canada.

I respect his position; it is appropriate for Canada to try and slip the noose of colonialism that we have hung around their necks over the last hundred years or so (tightened considerably through the FTA, NAFTA and now TPP), and in reaching out to other countries for trade, he is doing exactly that, but it is unprofessional and unhelpful to our Canadian neighbours to have a silver spoon puff head for a Prime Minister that wishes to pick a fight at least as often as he does something positive for his country - that is form intruding upon policy, which is exactly what brought down his predecessor.  It sure seems like he has his mother's brains .... his dad was a much sharper tool (although his policies were quite suspect)

With the Toronto mayor (Ford - can't recall the first name right now) kind of quiet, perhaps this fellow will provide some international reality TV to our content starved American masses - better hair - just not quite there ....

He would be smart to follow in his dad's footsteps regarding relations with the U.S.

"We have stood shoulder to shoulder with Canadian armed forces... in Iraq and Afghanistan," from the US State Department."

Well, the US didn't stand shoulder to shoulder with Canada during 1939-1941.  Canada was fighting WWII during that time, the US wasn't .

An interesting side note: During 1939-1941 some Americans went to Canada in order to fight.

Fight Club is based on a book written by this man: Charles Michael "Chuck" Palahniuk

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chuck_Palahniuk

Early and personal life

Palahniuk was born in Pasco, Washington, the son of Carol Adele (née Tallent) and Fred Palahniuk.[3][4]

He has Ukrainian, Russian, and French ancestry.[5]

His paternal grandfather was Ukrainian and emigrated to New York from Canada in 1907.[6]

Palahniuk grew up living in a mobile home in nearby Burbank, Washington with his family. His parents separated when he was fourteen and subsequently they divorced, often leaving him and his three siblings to live with their maternal grandparents at their cattle ranch in Eastern Washington.[7]

If we are abandoned by everybody except Israel, Saudis, Turks, Sunni extremists, and other assorted crazies then maybe it will finally dawn on people that maybe we should reconsider our position. Congress defeated a use of force authorization too. Can nothing stop us from trying to find a new war before we finish the others first?

In 1971 something called the Canadian Content Law was passed and mandated a certain percentage of content broadcast on Canadian radio & television must be Canadian.  At the time almost all music and movies broadcast in Canada were produced in the UK or US.  Beatles, Beach Boys, Hendrix, Elvis etc. dominated the Canadian radio airwaves.

I was living in Vancouver then and was playing in a crappy band.  We were so inexperienced that we didn't know bad we were, but we did write three chord songs that still haunt me to this day.  Record companies and radio stations were frantic for Canadian content and one day we received a phone call from a local record producer who asked us to bring him a tape with some of our songs.  He signed us to a recording contract and the rest is history.

This probably has nothing to do with the election of Justin Trudeau except that I wish him well.  I didn't like it when PM Harper signed on as the 51st state, and I'll be happy when a Canadian Foreign Policy Content law is passed.  Good Luck Justin!

Slightly off topic but here goes:

The first rule of war should be that the extended family of every federal and state politician, judge, agency head and appointees, all bureaucrats, all military personnel, all major bankers both private and public, all media heads and decision makers as well as front line talking heads and commentators go to the front lines. Also, all former holders of said positions.

I don't believe any politician, but the sound of this one cutting back on those over priced F-35 5th generation toys sounds good to me.  Europe, Russia and China all offer fighters that are capable at a far cheaper cost.  However, any country dependent on another for weapons is not an independent country any more.

Canada, like the USA is not threatened by invasion, so why do we need so many weapons?

When it is -40 or colder out there with horendously long supply lines to keep going, a nation would be crazy to take on Canada and there are some tough mothers up North who can more than look after themselves and don't think they are unarmed.

This is all for show, the fighters don't matter and people will continue to be stupid.  Trudeau told Reuters that he was going to cancel fighters but spend more on the Navy and fighting global warming.  He has also mentioned humanitarian aid as an alternative and all thinking people know what that means.  So, he is trying to make a show of standing up to Ziocons for those that are stupid enough to believe it, he is standing up to nothing and he has revealed as much.  He is similar to Obama and yet a much worse actor, his sugary sweet fakeness is exceedingly annoying.  Same shit, different day.

"He’ll also rule out the purchase of F-35 fighters in favor of more spending on the navy and join President Barrack Obama in Paris in pushing for aggressive action on climate change."

The similarities between the US's Bush-Obama transition and what is happening in Canada are many.  I sincerely hope the "Hope" works out for you guys, it sure didn't work for us.  Hedgers have made comments about Canada being about a decade behind the US and they don't mean that in a condescending way, they mean that in respect to the political patterns that present themselves.  Once you have lived through it it's easier to identify the patterns, it's quite striking, you even have "terror" events/shootings.

A step in the right direction.  9.11.01 was 14 years ago.  It will take at least a decade to clean up the mess the Israeli firsters have left behind.

Trudeau, a Roman Catholic, "resolutely pro-choice," interest in the legalization of marijuana, Trudeau fought against a proposed $100-million zinc mine that he argued would poison the Nahanni River, a United Nations World Heritage Site located in the Northwest Territories.

"During March 2012 Trudeau took part in a charity boxing match on behalf of "Fight for the Cure" with Conservative senator Patrick Brazeau.[62] Trudeau won the fight in the third round, and the result was considered an upset.[62][63]"
