Mexico Is Considering Legalizing Cannabis To Weaken Drug Cartels

Tyler Durden's picture

Submitted by John Vibes via TheAntiMedia.org,

Later this month, the supreme court of Mexico will review the country’s current prohibition of marijuana, as well as the possibility of legalizing the plant for medical and recreational use. Medical marijuana is currently legal in Mexico, but the black market drug trade in the country continues to cause widespread violence, drug cartel, and gang activity, just as it does in America.

Marijuana legalization has traditionally been a very popular concept in Mexico, where people understand the real-life consequences of the drug war and prohibition. However, the United Nations has forced many countries around the world, including Mexico, to comply with the drug prohibition policy the United States government has championed.

Now, with many U.S. states choosing to legalize the plant, Mexico is seeing a window of opportunity to change the laws at home, keep non-violent offenders out of jail, and minimize the violence created by the black market.

On October 28th, supreme court judges in Mexico will vote to decide whether the current prohibition on marijuana is unconstitutional. If they do choose to legalize the plant — which many believe they will — the country will follow a number of countries that are beginning to change their drug laws.

In 2001, Portugal became the first country in the world to end the drug war within its borders, and in the short time since, the country has seen a radical improvement in  society. Drugs now have fewer negative effects in Portugal than they did prior to decriminalization. There are now fewer drug-related deaths, fewer children getting ahold of drugs, and fewer people doing drugs in general.

There are also many other factors that people oftentimes overlook, including the fact that infectious diseases spread through needles and dirty drug practices have declined rapidly in Portugal since the end of drug prohibition.

As Anti-Media reported earlier this year, legislation was recently introduced in Ecuador that would make it the second country in the world to decriminalize all drugs, from marijuana to cocaine to heroin.

The drug war is one of the most misunderstood subjects in mainstream political dialogue, even among people who are sympathetic to the plight of responsible drug users. It is rare for someone to come out and say that all drugs should be legal, but this is the only logically consistent stance on the issue. To say that some drugs should be legal while others should not is still giving credence to the punishment paradigm and overlooking the external consequences of drug prohibition — or prohibition of any object, for that matter.

As I explained in an earlier article, there are many external factors the drug war affects that many people don’t take into account. That is because when you carry out acts of violence, even in the form of punishment, you then create a ripple effect that extends far beyond the bounds of the original circumstance to affect many innocent people down the line. The list in my previous article delves into those external factors to illustrate how drug users and non-users alike would be a lot better off if prohibition ceased immediately. The list includes the following advantages of full legalization:

(1) Reduce violent crime

(2) Improve seller accountability and drug safety

(3) Reduce drug availability to children

(4) Reduce nonviolent prisoner population

(5) Real crime can be dealt with

(6) Encourage genuine treatment for addicts

(7) Prevent drug overdoses

(8) Protect individual rights

Another thing to realize is that when they arrest and imprison people for reselling the wrong kind of vegetable, the first thing they do is try by all means to drug them up. Anti-depressant and anxiolytic drugs are readily provided by prison medical administrations (and their consumption is encouraged) and oestrogens are systematically added to food & beverages. For the comfort of the penitential staff, to render inmates apathetic and reduce their libido. So people selling plants end up being fed with subsidized drugs (real ones) for the sake of a supposed war on drugs.

Might wanna start with the heavy hitters cash flow wise, like coke and heroin.

Better pot is legally available in how many states now ?

Oh, okay, now I get it - this is about the loss of pot market share over the last 10 years.

Mex - i - co ! Mex- i - co ! We're gonna be Number One again !

Years ago over 50% of drug profits were from pot. There weren't that many coke and smack users to keep the cartels alive. Kind of like Vegas, the slots pay the bills and the tables are the gravy. Kill the slots and they all go broke.

So, without seeing new sales/profit numbers, killing the pot profits will dramatically shrink the drug smuggling industry, making it much easier to focus on the now-smaller groups moving the hard stuff.

Go watch the movie, 'Sicario'. It's more documentary than fiction. Mexico is a failed state, and this might be the only thing that turns it around.

An interesting point is made in the movie about 'stability' in the drug business, since there will always be people that want to self-medicate.

Personally, legalize it all and treat it as a medical problem. Junkies given free smack and needles don't rob granny. In the '70's, an ounce of legal medical cocaine was $100.00. Legal heroin might be the same, look at all the methadone given out. When they get sick, the death panels - I mean medical care approval boards - can refuse treatment, something we are all going to see at some point.

So let them get high and die. It's not like they have jobs and a positive future to look forward to...

I personally want it ALL legal, hard, soft, and prescription too. I am sick of paying a vet 100 bucks for a script and "permission" to give my dogs a drug that's legal and over the counter in nearly every non-retarded other country.

I'm with you, legalize it all. Folks at ZH make a lot jokes about blow, but many of us know from our youth that in moderation it is not the worst thing in the world. And weed, what a joke, anyone with sense knows alcohol damages far more lives. Smack kills fuckers but I take 30 mg of methadone a day for chronic pain and it doesn't effect mylife at all the only problem with it is the hassles it takes to keep my prescription due to FDA regulations. Let all adults write their own prescriptions

You really don't know much about Canada or its system of government. When a party is elected with a majority in parliament it is a 5 year dictatorship. Trudeau, like his old man, is a Canadian nationalist, an occasional causual pot smoker (in his youth) and will not blindly follow America foreign policy dictates. The US will wake up soon from the delusion that Canada is the 51st. state as it was under Emperor Harper and will no longer play that role or game with Trudeau at the helm. Lastly, the Liberals in Canada are center right in the political spectrum.

That's right. It won't happen. Too many judges, lawyers, cops, bureaucrats and politicos of all stripes in the US...a big chunk of the political class...depend on the war on drugs for their livelihood and the power they love to exercise over others. The State will defend its turf. The Mexican supreme court is easily within the reach of the long arm of the "law".

Yeah, they are all just different flavors of statists.  People are so scared of freedom they will fight anyone that merely suggests it.

My old boss was a chemist for the DEA.  When I used to argue about how all drugs should be legal, he would about lose his mind. Then another statist would jump in and use the usual arguments, such as my neighbor storing 5L of ether next to their hot water heater. I would always simply inform them that they could be doing that right now.

Then they would of course delve into other crimes, which actually DO harm the rights of others.

To me, it simply comes down to WHO owns ME?  Who owns MY kids?

If you logically look at how the law is structured today, the government does, and that is not an easy thing to take.

I am far from an expert but I gotta believe the illegal weed trade is not a major player in narco violence. Hence narco. It's probably the coke, crack, meth, et al that is the source of the violence as the money is much bigger than weed.

"You are adults, just respect the rights of others."

Drug users are imbeciles, mental defectives and delusional.  They speak about "responsible" adults who want to use drugs.  There's nothing responsible about using drugs.  If you use drugs, you're fucking first class idiot is all.

"[...] it is not the scope of the government to legislate in this area."

I give up.  What area are you talking about, area 51?

The people who are wasting their lives smoking this shit should be taken out and shot.  I mean that.  They love their dope!  That's what makes a drug a narcotic drug.  Marijuana is a narcotic drug.  It's the fact that users of the drug think it's just wonderful, and they have an other-worldly love of their dope, that makes it a narcotic.  Ever heard the expression "narcotic love"?  The dopers ascribe all sorts of magical properties to their drugs, proclaim it to be a gift from God, and even claim it makes them smarter.  Oh, yeah, they're really fucking smart!

Holy fuck, can it get any more obvious you're fucking your brain up, when you use drugs like these drug-induced mental defectives?

Re-read the article again.  It reads like it was written by some sort of mental defective with a fourth grade education.  This writer is so inept, he shouldn't even have a drivers license, let alone be allowed to recommend social policy concerning illicit drug use.

The dolt should have his computer taken away.  I bet he wouldn't want his parents or grandparents to read his pro-dope drivel.  No!  I take that back.  I've seen this before.  The sort of shit-for-brains that writes this pro-dope twaddle would sit and talk with a two year old about how cool it is to get stoned.  Fuck this jerk and all the clowns here re-vomiting the tired old legalize dope crap that gets posted on the Internet.

You pro-dope people are self-induced morons.  Pull you pud in private!  No one wants to see what you're doping to yourself.

Schedule I is heroin, cocaine, lsd etc. You can't prescribe those. If you've got a working DEA #, you can prescribe Schedule II - V. Schedule II is like morphine, fentanyl, oxymorphone, oxycodone etc.

I'm conflicted about making Sch. II - V  OTC but again I read somewhere that before Harrison Act of 1914, less than 1% of population was losing it's shit over opium, cocaine, morphine etc.

Most adults have actual self control independent of the Nanny Police State.

Except actually they'd be boring.  People on acid when you're not on acid are not very interesting.

I'm a lot more concerned about the fact that I recently read the most-commonly prescribed drug in America right now is Abilify.   Abilify is an anti-psychotic, taken along with an existing anti-anxiety drug, as I understand it.

Americans  take a lot of drugs.  But there are more people taking an anti-psychotic than, say, Lipitor?  Or a leading brand-name anti-high-blood-pressure medication?

I would far rather deal with 3.3 million acid freaks trippin' balls than maybe 75 million people who legitimately need anti-psychotic medication.

Good.  That cocksucker Bush started two phony wars on behalf of his two criminal buddies. War on terror for Goldman Sachs(gold cartel) and war on drugs for Mexican drug cartel.

The cartels are in the process of forcing their slaves, the rural mexican, into producing heroin.  Mexico is a failed state.  Put up a wall, minefield, and several strings of concertina wire.  Shoot on sight.

"United Nations has forced many countries around the world, including Mexico, to comply with the drug prohibition policy the United States government has championed."

of all the things the un fails miserably at enforcing (when they even pretend to) this is the one at which they're actually effective?!?  not necessarily question the validity of the statement, just wondering how an organiztion whose reputation for effectiveness rivals the tsa's manage to do this?

In addition to legalizing all Schedule I drugs, I think a lot of chronic disease drugs should be OTC. Antihypertensives, Cholesterol lowering agents, oral hypoglycemics, PDE5 inhibitors  etc.

The model would be that you get the initial script -( the recipe) from your doctor. When you run out, rather than kill a day of work, go insane in the waiting room, and pay a 100$ copay, you simply buy

refills OTC.  If instead you choose to fine tune your chronic dz, you go back and see your doc. I've met some incredibly stupid people who might in fact harm themselves with this policy.

But overall I think the +100 IQ adults with the capacity to retain/understand their medical conditions would benefit.

Honestly, there is no better teacher. Pretending to protect people with governance is what led to this world filled with functional idiots, as they apathetically rely upon "False-Authority Syndrome" rather than try to be responsible for their own lives.

While I agree with your gripe with our patronage system of medicine we have, stay the flying fuck away from the statin drugs.

In 20 years I doubt they will be on the market.  But by then, they will have to amputate your foot that you burned by putting it too close to the fire and never felt it cook due to diabetic neuropathy.

Same with the osteoporosis drugs (bisphosphonates), they will not be on the market either. Those are some nasty ass side effects there.

This won't happen (your system) until the oldest generation dies off. Simply won't happen. They need to be lied to by a guy in a white coat.  They really do.

Its a start, but as near as I can tell, the cartels aren't killing people to get weed to Mexicans, their killing people to get the weed to the Americans.

The cartels are killing Mexicans as part of their overall strategy of intimidation to keep the Mexican government, police and army in their pockets so the borders are properly open to drug traffic.

Mexico is largely a failed state. Everyone will be leaving in the next wave of economic downturn.

Or the sporting conglomerates.

I think your close...but the ciggy industry (In USA) has been dying the death-of-a-thousand-cuts for the past 25+ years of negative advertising and would be the first to not only jump on, but lead the bandwagon.

Its a plant rolled into a ciggy...take it into the labs at Phillip Morris, have the lab-monkeys add some stuff to make it addictive and *poof* violla!...33 Million potential uers....for life....

Law Enforcement Against Prohibition has been saying legalize it for many years because it would reduce crime and stop the money flow towards organized crime. After so many years with the government war on drugs, you might think that the DEA, CIA and the neo-conservatives are profiting from the game and misery.  http://www.leap.cc
