NASA Warns: 99% Chance Of At Least A 5.0 Quake Hitting LA Within 30 Months

Tyler Durden's picture

If scientists at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena are correct, a moderately-sized earthquake is expected within the next two-and-a-half years.

As CBS LA reports, JPL experts predict a possible 5.0 magnitude quake in Los Angeles, but say it very well could be stronger.

JPL geophysicist Dr. Andrea Donnellan, along with seven other scientists, has been using radar and GPS to measure Southern California’s chances for a sizable earthquake, and has made a sobering hypothesis about another big one.

“When the La Habra earthquake happened, it was relieving some of that stress, and it actually shook some of the upper sediments in the LA basin and moved those a little bit more,” Dr. Donellan said.

However, according to Dr. Donnellan, those strains remain, with enough power to produce an even larger quake in the same epicenter in La Habra.

“There’s enough energy stored to produce about a magnitude 6.1 to 6.3 earthquake,” Dr. Donnellan described.

The new NASA-led analysis of a moderate magnitude 5.1 earthquake that shook Greater Los Angeles in 2014 finds that the earthquake deformed Earth's crust across a broad region encompassing the northern Los Angeles Basin and northern Orange County. As Fox LA adds rather ominously,

The shallow ground movements observed from this earthquake likely reflect strain accumulated on deeper faults, which remain locked and may be capable of producing future earthquakes.

"The earthquake faults in this region are part of a system of faults," said Donnellan. "They can move together in an earthquake and produce measurable surface deformation, even during moderate magnitude earthquakes. This fault system accommodates the ongoing shortening of Earth's crust in the northern Los Angeles region.

Tectonic motion across the Los Angeles region is distributed on an intricate network of horizontally and vertically moving faults that eventually release accumulated strain in the form of earthquakes, such as the destructive 1994 magnitude-6.7 Northridge earthquake.

Donnellan said a future earthquake to release the accumulated strain on these faults could occur on any one or several of these fault structures, which may not have been mapped at the surface. "Identifying specific fault structures most likely to be responsible for future earthquakes for this system of many active faults is often very difficult," she said.

*  *  *

Seismologists at the US Geological Survey have questioned that probability, suggesting it may in fact be slightly lower, stating: “…the accepted random chance of a (magnitude five) or greater in this area in three years is 85 percent, independent of the analysis in this paper.”

USGS uses different methods from radar and GPS, such as fault maps and models, to develop their results.

Regardless of the discrepancy in percentage, scientists agree that the probability of at least a moderate-sized earthquake in Los Angeles over the next three years is high.

“We all need to be prepared. That’s not new for LA.”

You think it'll be tough for LA?

LA will be the 'epicenter' (pun intended) for disaster aid.  EVERYTHING will flow to there. In the meantime, peripheral areas, Antelope Valley, Victor Valley, Inland Empire will be waiting for God knows how long for any sort of aid.  We're in those areas the UN/US decreed should be wild life corridors that should be eradicated of human life. so....

Truth is I quite enjoy your stories too. I've got stories to tell too, I could write a book about the BS family law. I'm a (now) penniless old farmer (well 53yo) but 12 years ago I fought it out with my millionaire big city lawyer ex-wife and survived and stayed in my kid's lives as more than a 'see-them-in-the-park-on-Sundays' Dad, and today, well let's just say we do the Priscilla Presley thang : )

but I'm here at Zero Hedge to put the wind up about what that Fifth Assessment Report means, like it or not. No, I'm not paid to do this. Want tell me to GFY or call me a one-trick pony? Ok, but remember, I've taken on goliath and won.

The State bankrupted me and tried to disappear me from my two very young children. I'm not a big fan of The State. Please don't be confused.

Since the quakes are caused by a tectonic plate pushing INTO the USA on the left coast, that would be some Nature's trick to 'unzip'. It would imply that that the tectonic plate suddenly reversed direction. Wonder how many hamsters in wheels that would take?

Not sure why everyone thinks the west coast is going to split into the ocean (of course for most it's most likely just wishful thinking for CA's demise) but the major faults are supposedly crunching together north and south, i.e. San Fran and LA are inching towards either. God forbid they both meld into one giant shit hole.

Meantime we buy steel from China, pay the Coolies, and sell the entire program back to them so we can lease it back.

Predicting a 5.0 magnitude earthquake sometime in 30 months in that region is like predicting it will rain sometime in the next year - well, OK, slight exaggeration.   But a 5.0 earthquake every 30 months is not particularly implausible manifestation window.   It's been a long time since I looked at frequency/magnitude data for California (took a university course focused on California earthquakes in 1987, middle aged fart that I am).  My memory of the data is a little foggy.  But I know that 5.0 mag shakers are common enough to make this prediction somewhat of a ho hum event.  ...and a 5.0 isn't a big deal and would likely cause only trivial damage.  That's not a big magnitude quake, and the building codes in California easily deal with that magnitude.

They never claim to be correct.

They just claim they've studied the shit out of something and this is what it looks like.

To quote Richard Feynman...

You don’t like it… go somewhere else!

To another universe! Where the rules are simpler, philosophically more pleasing, more psychologically easy. I can’t help it! OK! If I’m going to tell you honestly what the world looks like to the… human beings who have struggled as hard as they can to understand it, I can only tell you what it looks like.

And I cannot make it any simpler, I’m not going to do this, I’m not going to simplify it, and I’m not going to fake it. I’m not going to tell you it’s something like a ball bearing inside a spring, it isn’t.

So I’m going to tell you what it really is like, and if you don’t like it, that’s too bad.

They recently discovered for the first time that the Newport/Inglewood fault is actually as deep as the San Andreas, has helium3 leaking out of it, and it runs right through the center of LA county and down to Newport Beach in Orange County, was responsible for the very nasty Long Beach quake of 1933.  It hasn't triggered a big quake since then, but apparently could, and being so local could do some real damage.

But predicting a 5.0 shaker ain't nuthin, it's like predicting Tom Brady's balls will deflate again sometime in the next three years.

Sounds like NASA is trying to justify their existance just before the debt ceiling.

I'd prefer a neutron bomb.  That way the stinky progressives and the Pelosi voters would be gone and we'd have one awesome piece of land to start over with.  I fucking love SF and the north coast.  But like all the other awesome places around the world,  they're always overrun by the least desirable element.

Looks like its time to put NASA on the short-timer list of federal agencies.  Their time has come and gone.  Somebody notify the Donald.

Depends on your building code.
In N.Z. a 5-6 doesn't rate as a big quake.
Over 6.5 is a good shake
But then we have about 14,000 detectable quakes each year.

I would like to propose a question.

Earthquakes have been very difficult to predict (Spent my youth in NZ) to date, what mesurements or tests have been done which make the probability much more certain.

The credability of this article could have been lifted if it had explained the science behind the call.(So what is new).

Also fellow commentors need to understand a magnitude quake close to the surface can be quite damaging, deep quakes "Yes you can sleep through".

Im sure they are making it up. Like all economic calculations that come with a probability.

"73.2% chances of recession in the next 19 months..." as if they actually ran a calculation.

These a**holes ought to stick to "predicting" global wamring or making Arabs fell good (hey! that's what ovomit says they ought to be doing - don't blame me) or "predicting" how many hurricanes there will be this season or that "recovery" is just around the corner, or . . .

Well, you get the idea.

"Predicting" isn't a strong suite of the gobernm'nt!

This is SO funny to me. I lived through the Northridge earthquake. I was there when it happened. I lived through AFTERSHOCKS of that quake that were bigger than what NASA is predicting. This is nothing more than NASA trying to scare people by promoting this fear-porn. LA HAS EARTHQUAKES. That's what happens when your city is right on top of the San Andreas faultline. I heard that people even take bets on how big the next quake is going to be. I just have to laugh when I think about NASA trying to scare people with this. I guess they don't have anything else interesting to do right now.

Since when is NASA doing terrestrial geological surveys? Did that start right after the outreach to the Muslim world?
