From Russia With Love: Assad Unexpectedly Visits Putin In Moscow

Tyler Durden's picture

On Tuesday, we noted how absurd it is for Saudi foreign minister Adel al-Jubeir to suggest that it will be “difficult” for Iran to play a part in “resolving” Syria’s years-old civil war. Here’s how we put it yesterday:

It's rather strange for the Saudis to make statements like "it will be difficult for Iran to play a role in finding a solution to the conflict." We hate to be the bearers of bad news, but Iran is already playing a role in finding a "solution" - they're summarily wiping out the groups funded by the Saudis on the way to restoring the regime. If anyone is going to have a "difficult" time playing a part, it's the Saudis.

That same logic applies to the US and any of Washington and Riyadh’s regional allies.

With each passing day, the opportunity for the West and the Sunni axis to have some say in Syria’s political future slips away. As we’ve said on a number of occasions, Russia isn’t going to risk the lives of her troops and spend who knows how many tens if not hundreds of millions of dollars only to have the West dictate the terms of any political “transition” which may or may not take place once the smoke has cleared.

Indeed, several Western powers and some of the regional backers of the Sunni extremist groups battling the regime have already admitted that Assad may have to remain in power during a “transitional” period.

Now that Iranian ground troops are poised to take Aleppo in what amounts to a final push to restore Assad’s grip over the country, The Kremlin is already looking at how to go about shaping the country’s political future as Assad traveled to Moscow in what the media says is his first foreign visit since the start of the civil war. At a meeting with Putin, the two leaders discussed the "political process" and reviewed the progress in the fight against "international terrorists." Here’s Bloomberg with more:

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad held talks in Moscow with President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday in his first known foreign visit since the civil war erupted in 2011, underscoring the growing Russian role in the four-year conflict.

Almost a month into a Russian bombing campaign in support of Assad’s forces, Putin told the Syrian leader during the unannounced visit to the Kremlin that “there have been some major positive results in this fight” against the “international terrorists” battling government forces, according to a transcript released by Russia’s government.

Ending the crisis requires “a political process with the participation of all political forces, ethnic and religious groups,” Putin said in comments shown on Russian state television on Wednesday. Assad, thanking Russia for its assistance, said the fight against “terrorism” is the “obstacle against any true political steps that could be taken on the ground.”

Sami Nader, head of the Beirut-based Levant Institute for Strategic Affairs, said the trip to Moscow was Assad’s first foreign visit since the Syrian conflict began with an uprising against the regime in Damascus, and pointed to future Russian strategy ahead of any peace talks.

It’s “Russia’s way of saying he is in our pocket, he is our asset and we will decide whether to keep him,” Nader said. “This is for sure a preparation for a deal and one more attempt by the Russians to embolden their bargaining position.”

And so, just as we said from the beginning, Moscow’s move to muscle the West out of the way militarily has led directly to Russia hijacking the political negotiations as well.

In short: Washington and its regional allies will be allowed to participate in a discussion with The Kremlin, but that’s as far as it goes. Russia will decide Syria’s political future in consultation with Iran and given the strategic importance for Tehran of ensuring that there’s a “friendly” government operating in Damascus, you can bet that whatever the solution ends up being, Washington, Riyadh, Ankara, and Doha will most assuredly not like it.

To the victor go the spoils.

For now, we'll close with one quote from Sergei Karaganov, dean of the Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs at Moscow’s Higher School of Economics, and one amusing picture which we'll leave it to readers to caption (note the ear-to-ear grins).

“The message to the world is that Russia solves problems and you don’t. If you want to solve problems, work with us.”

The Nobel Prize Winner must be chagrined that his war which has killed over 300,000 Syrians and made refugees of over 4 million, has not prevented Assad from travelling to meet his pal Putin.

And look how HuffPost spreds the government propaganda.

“Syria's conflict began in March 2011 after the government cracked down violently on largely peaceful protests against Assad's rule.”

“U.S. say the Moscow military intervention helps props up Assad and is likely to fan the violence.”

“A week after Russia launched its airstrikes … there has been no strategic victory.”

One reality and truth that gets under reported is that Assad waited a VERY long time to invite the Russians to help because he is now a vassal to Putin. He waited until it was obvious he would lose otherwise. Now he is paying homage. The Russians and Iranians may solve the problem (that the US caused) but for Assad it's time to give tribute. I imagine he has mixed feelings at this point, gratitude mixed with loss. If Putin said come to Moscow could he have said "Maybe I can fit it into my schedule next week"?

Hogwash in the sense that Assad has depended on Russia, Iran and the Hezbullah for some time now.

Assad is no "vassal" - he could easily have high-tailed it to Monaco or Switzerland with his family a long time ago but has stuck it out.

Russia depends on Assad standing firm, else the West wins and Russia loses their gas monopolies, not to mention one of their only warm water naval bases...

Someone who has power over you (even the power of quitting) is no longer a vassal.

If you want "vassal", look no further than Angela Merkel.

Who says who's in charge of subtext. Maybe Assad is finally in a position to leave his bunker, and is merely choosing to thank Putin and show his support for all the help he is getting. I know that sounds naiive to the twisted minds of the neocon, but the world used to run on Diplomacy.

LOL so the definition of not being a vassal is if you have enough assets to run and hide? Don't get me wrong I'm no fan of what my country (which is now unrecognizable to me) has done with its power plays in the rest of the world but Russia isn't in Syria for warm hugs a fuzzy feelings. Putin now owns part of Assad and he's too much of a world leader to let it be forgotten. The fact that Merkel is also a vassal and does the will of her liege lord doesn't negate the point that Assad would have preferred to solve the mess on his own and owe his position to no one. That wasn't possible so he wisely chose being a protectorate of Russia to what the CIA had in store for him. Vlad may be more rational than the Kenyan guy but I wouldn't want to owe my soul to him. Assad now owes the Russians and the Iranians more than he did a year ago and neither will lose track of the balance sheet.

What's so hard to figure out that isn't already on the table. Russia has its only warm water port in Syria, and Gazprom wants to be the sole delivery pipleline to Europe. Assad and Putin have ALREADY worked that out. No Mystery. Its the US and the West who want something different.

First learn the difference between vassal and allies. Syria is an ally of Russia since last decade and had they been russia vassals russiand would be influencing  their nation policies and  activities which they.don't do unlike US who calls its partners as free countries making their choices bit guess what facts state otherwise. US sanctioning French companies for doing busimess with Cuba etc.why because US sanctions were placed on them and in return your free partners or vassals end up paying 800 million to 8 billion $ money in fines and then you force your free partners to cancel their contracts with third party because we assholes are on a warpath against them. Thats what vassals do when their overlords tell them to.

Were you born that stupid or did you have to work on it? Get your facts straight sheeple murkan.

Russia's interests in supporting Syria's current establishment stretch far beyond the simpleton reasoning involving "vassals" and "oil/gas pipes". Russia understands that this is a question of highest national interest because of the underlying context of ZATO's actions in the past 20+ years, like placing missile systems in countries that only yesterday were a part of The Warsaw Pact.

If you consider Pentagram's "domino" theory of Syria - Lebanon - Iran - Russia (and see this), then Russia's actions ought to make more sense, regardless of one's previous knowledge of geopolitics.

One reality and truth that gets under reported is that Assad waited a VERY long time to invite the Russians to help because he is now a vassal to Putin.

The timing had nothing to do with either Putin or Assad.  They have both wanted an opportunity for Russia to intervene for several years.  Putin had to wait until the US had further isolated itself.  Putin would not have acted without the quiet acquiessence of Europe.  The refugee crisis provided that   He started meeting with European leaders soon after the crisis became big news in Western media.

Ruskies under criminal putin regime rule get only more poorer and poorer while putin regime elite enjoys western luxuries.

In this video material (and for those who understand Russian I can recommend to follow this account) it is informed that Russian babushkas are freezing in winter because they can’t afford firewood. So there are volunteers that give away free firewood to these people.

https://youtu.be/mQpSmiIckRU?t=3m10s

That’s good. But this is not in this century for “superpower” like Russia that people receive pension 85 EUR a month! Yes you read that right! 85 EUR a month – not day, not week but 85 EUR a month! How can one live with such money? Well, they can’t so there are volunteers that give away free potato and free firewood. There millions of people who live such pathetic lives under criminal putin regime.

So few conclusions:

Russia is not a superpower if its citizens live such pathetic lives.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OscXu88aSXU

Russian live such pathetic lives because they live under criminal putin regime rule that steals away Russian money. They live under criminal putin regime rule because they are under putins propaganda spell. So they don’t stand up against it.

Here’s an article about how russkies freez up because they are too poor to have heating at home - there are millions of people out there in Russia with this problem:

Russian Elderly to Receive Firewood Via Crowdfunding, Not Government Subsidies

Still, criminal putin regime steals money and spends on war in Syria. And that all to get away russkies attention from failed war in Ukraine.

You might think I'm wrong, but I just spent a week in Kiev (not long, I know), and met a lot of people who were pro-and-anti Putin and the West.

But they uniformly hated Porky and the Tribe-controlled government.

So, although I am a big fan of Vladimir Vladimirovich, I can't help but think that a lot of the Russia hate is being fired up by a particular group who are willing to fight right down to the last Ukrainian to destroy the traditions and religion of the Russians.  I just wish the Ukrainians would step back and think about who their REAL enemy is.

It's the same with Merkel. Most Germans should by now have realized who really controls the chancellor and her distasterous policies of recent months, and thus they look for someone who is not controlled and steered by DC and admire that person. Moscow is one of the few remaining places that isn't and that helps Putin to score a lot of points, I guess only a few people on ZH have actually ever travelled to Russia or speak the language. But this fact weighs strongly even for me.

I think this is being used as a signal to the important observers - Germany, Italy, Greece - Israel, maybe -  that things have improved enough for Assad that Assad can travel.

Off-topic but, it's always seemed to me that the endless insult-fanning that goes on here and elsewhere to keep the Greeks and Germans at each others throats is because THOSE TWO getting together is the real threat to control of the nat gas in the Eastern Med for Europe's benefit.  Which is in nobody else's interest except Europe.  The Germans really seem to lack imagination, truly.

Putin doesnt seem that smart. Backing Assad, he has lost the "isis" counter-terror momentum (people around the globe started to believe that nonsense). Finally, the US was right: putin is not in syria to stop isis but to back assad.they said it long time ago. Probably that is the reason US does not get involved, it's time for poor russia to back assad and pay that bill. Very clever US move because it's clear that Assad will not be able to restore anything and russia will need to provide more and more resources being far away from their homeland. The more they will send the better.

With 30 planes and 1500 soldiers nothing is going to change there. Syria is a big trap and putin has fallen into it. Iran is easier to control, just talking about sanctions will make them think twice.

The rest is just stupid propaganda. How many targets were hit, how great mig-29 is, bla, bla, bla.

Again, smart move from obama.

sure, he does not want to get too many soldiers on the ground but it's not up to him. If Assad does not get his country back very soon, putin will be in a terrible position. So, he has to be commited to backing Assad. Iran is not a problem, they are desperate for a better relation with the West. think if Turkey and Israel will get involved. 30 jets from the 80's will do the job for a country lthe size of Syria? either putin got mental issues and lost touch with reality, or he has the support from EU.

Well from a tactical point of view first you secure your rear area and then you go after more distant targets, unless of course you are a idiot.

Strategically watch them roll Isis back across Syria then Iraq. The result will ideally be a friendly band from the Meditranian to Afghanistan that insulates the Caucasus and Central Asia from Saudi sponsored extremism and American imperial designs on pipelines and control of resources in Central Asia. For the Americans all that will be left for them is Afghanistan and that's why they can't pull their troops out now.

We all know Afghanistan as the grave yard of empires. I wonder why so many empires end up there?
