What you gonna do when the bombs start to fall?

It's a near miracle that nuclear war has so far been avoided.

-Noam Chomsky

Let's imagine for a few minutes that the ongoing-global-currency war and proxy wars somehow, unexpectedly, blow up into a world war directly involving you, wherever it is that you live.  Specifically, imagine that one side is able to achieve surprise, and as you sit at your desk, today, the power and all telecommunications go out without warning.  Within 15 minutes, everyone notices a large amount of what is obviously military aircraft activity, evidenced by sonic booms, and soon there are several very bright flashes on the horizon in the direction of the closest military base

The odds of this actually happening are not zero.

You may very well survive a nuclear war.  Did you know that there have been over 500 above-ground detonations of nuclear weapons.

As an exercise, please consider the following questions:

How do you think most others around you would react?

Do you already have a plan that you would implement for this type of scenario?

What immediate action(s) would you take?

What are the three most likely perils you might face?

What is the thing you could do, now, to most improve your chance of surviving each of these three perils?

Here are my responses.

How do you think most others around you would react?  I believe the amount of panic in any major American city, like mine, would be absolutely hellacious, literally, and streets would become impassable to cars almost immediately.  Many people would either become catatonic with disbelief, die of a heart attack, or quickly progress from fear to the emotion that most know best, anger.  People would resort to any and all measures to try to get out of the cities.

Do you already have a plan that you would implement for this type of scenario?  Yes.

What immediate action(s) would you take?  I would ride a motorcycle (very quickly) on train tracks, or other previously reconnoitered route, to one of several pre-planned rally points that have a bomb and fallout shelter.

What are the three most likely perils you might face?  1) Nuclear weapon blast or fallout 2) Lack of drinking water 3) Starvation

What is the thing you could do, now, to most improve your chance of surviving each of these three perils?  1) Remember the excellent information in this goofy dude's videos. 2) Have water stored at shelter 3) Have food stored at shelter.

Do you even know where to find a fallout shelter?  How quickly can you get to one?  Will you be able to get in?

Si vis pacem, para bellum.

naa, that's too good for them.  I'd rather have them exposed to the fallout and have to suffer for a few weeks before croaking.

"When the bombs explode, what will you do?"

Thanks mate, no one on the doomer side of the internet ever thought about shelters and storing food and nukes. This is the kind of article that makes a difference.

Of course it's true that there must be a shitload of info on shelters, etc. on the doomer side of the internet, BUT its important to remind people, even very awake people to DO something. Thanks to the author for the suggestions. And I agree - Hellacious is right!

Im doing everything i can already, against the clock. I wont be building a shelter in my apartment complex, that is for sure.

I agree that this isn't news, but that is no reason for you to be a dick.

I don't know anybody that wouldn't learn something from watching, "...this goofy dude's videos."

I would be very surprised if 5% of the readers, here, even know of an operational fallout shelter that they can access nearby, or have discussed and/or made plans to go there with their loved ones, unless of course they are a high-level government worker

What do you think are the chances of world war in the next 10 years?  What is the most likely peril you think you would face if/when war comes to your home?  Have you done anything to mitigate the risk?

Fri, 10/23/2015 - 07:01 | 6701929 jughead

In the US there are not many operational shelters left, thanks to MAD.  You need to identify "potential" fallout shelters.  Older public buildings and schools are your best bet.  Very few of these places are set up for any kind of long-term survival beyond a few days though...little or no stocks of food, water or medical supplies.  Point is, if you are not one of those "high level government workers" you have very few options available to you.

But I think your piece hits on something most people haven't really thought about these days.  Everybody that preps is prepping for an economic crash, civil unrest, pandemics, martial law, EMPs, etc, but nobody is really planning for the short-term realities of a nuclear first strike on a scale beyond a couple of nukes launched by some terrorist group, Iran, North Korea, etc. All the preps in the world do you no good if you can't get to them...or end up exposed to lethal levels of radiation in the process of trying to get to them.

...except for governments that spend ma$$ive amounts on government continuity, but little or nothing to ensure continuity of the governed.

Turgidson: Doctor, you mentioned the ration of ten women to each man. Now, wouldn't that necessitate the abandonment of the so called monogamous sexual relationship, I mean, as far as men were concerned?

Strangelove: Regrettably, yes. But it is, you know, a sacrifice required for the future of the human race. I hasten to add that since each man will be required to do prodigious... service along these lines, the women will have to be selected for their sexual characteristics which will have to be of a highly stimulating nature.

DeSadeski: I must confess, you have an astonishingly good idea there, Doctor.

Strangelove: Thank you, sir.

I live in Israel and every building has a bomb shelter. These are just big basements without any filters nor supplies. Think of the subway in WW2 London.

I rent an apartment, all i can do is to keep a big bag of rice and 100 liters of water tucked on the side. It should cover me against short term supply disruptions (akin to Katrina).

I can think of a dozen better qualified sources than Noam Chimpski- as he as been famously dissed- for info on nuclear war issues. Note that with over 500 surface explosion, we're still here. My favorite source is Nevil Shute's 1957 novel. Herman Kahn was another thinker altogether re: nuclear war. Noam wanders off in the weeds when he gets off his academic specialty, linguistics of a sort.

A sub-stratospheric nuclear detonation causing a wide-scale EMP is probably the most likely tactic.

Most likely "A" tactic.  One is none and two is one...and no military plan depends on one single tactic.  EMP will most likely be followed by actual strikes at strategic targets...enough to (hopefully) ensure no second strike capability.

Yes, I have read One Second After, and yes I have bug-out-bags in both family vehicles. Wife gives me grief over the bags-o'-crap in the trunk but I do not yield on the subject. Don't drink the milk after a nuclear exchange.  Cows concentrate the radiological particles from grass.  I would think well water should be fine (hand pumped).  It takes years for most water to reach the aquifer.

Well if what you consider milk is that sterilized bullshit in the store mixed together from a million other cows producing watered down bullshit, I'd agree.  I have 2 Jerseys though.  Jerseys and Gurnseys have the higest milk solids of any other cow.  Holsteins are the most watered down i.e. commercial cows.  Jerseys make milk, and it's awesome!!!

If the water and air where you are isn't poisoned, it might be better in the long run.  Everyone seems to think that it will back to the cave, but with portable and micro technologies that currently exist you can maintain a high standard of living without this giant creaking infrastructure that is falling apart anyway.  There will be new ways of doing things, and community will regain its former meaning instead of the current definition which is as a proxy for whatever fake interest group the oligarchs are pushing.

The aristocrats will be utterly annihilated, both in their capacity to cause further immediate harm, and in the future.  The war would bring the final discreditation of the concept of elites, as nuclear war would prove once and for all that humanity suffers when small groups control the majority.  This lesson would carry forward through future history.

The chains of slavery would be broken, never to reforge.  The promise of America would finally be fulfilled; that no man need serve another.  This is the American Dream, to collect the fruits of your own labor and to make your own fortune, free from the grasping tendrils of the elite in the Old World, who felt entitled to the last crumb of the least peasant.  The American Dream was never about paying a mortgage or having a secure "job" that pays you barely enough to get by while living in fear of being put out on the crumbling streets.

Regardless of what happens in the future the lessons learned would carry through, as the lessons of Rome have made it to the present day.  There is no going back, what has been done is done.  There is only the future now.
