Is America The Greatest Country In The World?

I’m in New Haven today to attend the funeral of Irwin Schiff, who unfortunately passed away last weekend.
If you’ve never heard of Irwin, he was one of the original “tax protestors”.
He believed not only that paying federal income was unconstitutional, but actually went so far as to stop paying tax altogether.
And he spent years of his life in prison as a result.
Now, you may not agree with his philosophy or its legal basis.
But I hope we can agree that keeping an 87-year old terminally ill cancer patient handcuffed to a hospital bed for failing to file taxes is a disgusting reflection of modern America.
The fact that failing to file taxes is even a criminal matter at all in the Land of the Free is truly bizarre.
In civilized countries, tax matters are precisely that– civil. They don’t throw people in prison with violent felons over something so trivial.
But this has become the way of so many things in the Land of the Free.
Aside from the most obscure violation of the US federal tax code, which goes on for thousands of pages, you can go to jail for violating any number of federal regulations, the sum of which could fill an entire football stadium.
And that’s precisely the problem with this place.
You see, I think the United States really is wonderful… with a huge caveat.
America has some of the nicest malls in the world. There are so many quality brands and luxurious shops. The restaurants are fantastic with speedy, efficient service.
You can buy the nicest cars models and live in big McMansions. All the latest technological gadgetry is available for sale at the big box retailer down the street.
Street corners are dotted with gourmet coffee shops or convenient drug stores. And there are thousands of programs to watch on television at any given moment.
Yes, the United States is one of the greatest places in the world… to be a consumer.
If you want to shop, spend, and consume, the US is pretty damn near #1 in the world.
But if you want to build. If you want to create. If you want to be a producer in the United States… it’s a whole different story.
Just think about what it takes to start a business these days– there are permits, licenses, and regulations to follow, most of which you have probably never even heard of.
Every single business day the federal government publishes hundreds of pages of new rules and regulations in what’s called the Federal Register.
Today’s edition alone is a massive 815 pages.
On Monday there will be several hundred pages more. And Tuesday. Wednesday. Etc. It never stops.
Many of these rules come with severe penalties as well.
Months ago we discovered that the Commerce Department was threatening people with a $25,000 fine and potential litigation simply for not filling out a survey.
And on top of everything else are all the rules you have to deal with regarding employees, taxes, and now Obamacare.
Oh, and that’s just at the Federal level. State and local governments add their own burdensome requirements as well.
No one is immune. They even chase away little girls who dare to operate a lemonade stand without a permit. It’s unbelievable.
And young people who try to become productive by going to university graduate with $30,000+ in debt that they’ll spend the next fifteen years paying down.
Then there’s the additional hassle of dealing with the financial system; just getting a bank account open for a new business is now a major challenge.
Banks force small businesses to jump through all sorts of ridiculous hoops to prove that they’re not money launderers, just for the privilege of depositing their money to earn 0% interest.
What’s really ironic is that a consumer can walk into a bank and easily obtain a loan to buy a new car, or even a television.
But you have basically no chance of obtaining a loan to start a new business or invest in a great company.
These are all symptoms of the same problem. If you want to spend, borrow, and consume, America is fantastic.
But if you want to save, invest, and produce, America is becoming more challenging every year.
The Universal Law of Prosperity is very simple: produce MORE than you consume. And it applies equally to people, governments, and entire economies.
In the US, and most of the West, everything in the system is designed for the exact opposite– rewarding consumption at the expense of production.
And this is a massive problem that’s causing a major decline.
Sure, you might have accumulated more ‘stuff’. But every year the West is less wealthy, and less free.
Here’s the bad news: Your government can’t fix this. They’re a huge part of the reason this problem exists in the first place.
And you can’t fix this yourself either. There is no grassroots campaign, no ‘get out the vote’ movement to get your nation back on track.
But what you can do is take care of yourself. Make sure that, if this trend continues, you’re not going to be a victim of other people’s stupidity.
Produce more than you consume. Safeguard your purchasing power. Protect what you’ve worked for. Diversify abroad. Invest wisely. Have a Plan B.
In short, you can’t fix your country, or your government. Especially if the system is designed to make you less wealthy and less free.
Because if you really want to be able to change something for the better, just make sure that no matter what happens, you’re always going to be in a position of strength.

Yes it was, up until 1968, which was the first post-war year when savings of American households started to decline, hence an attempt to cut a piece of the Socialist Bloc in Czechoslovakia, aka "Prague Spring" -- that was the main reason for Russian tanks in Prague.
WWII was the only way for the United States to get out of the Great Depression, and till 1968 American industry produced the coolest and the highest quality products in the world, which in all fairness still was pretty much in ruins, e.g. food rationing in UK ended in 1954.

This is a true story that happened to me about 12 years ago in Texas.
I have a 4-Yr Bachelor of Science Degree in Petroleum Engineering from arguably the top Petroleum Engineering school in this Nation. I worked for a major US Multinational Public US Expl and Production Co for 5 years and then took the required “minimum standards” 8-hour exam to become a Licensed PE.
This “min standards” exam is comprehensive. It had been given, at the time of my taking in 1993, in most all major oil and gas producing states, for a couple decades prior with one very very big excpetion – the State of Texas, the largest US Producing state, did NOT REQUIRE this exam to call one’s self a licensed, and fully authorized to practice, Petroleum Engineer. A Mr. Bing Wines at the time had tracked this exam’s results “by state” and “by Year” for the preceding couple decades and his results showed how, in every state where it was given – about 20 at the time I believe (but not in TX) – the Pass-Fail Rate was 35% Pass:65% Fail. This was by design according to Mr. Wines and very consistent, year-after-year and state-to-state as his data proved.
To add insult to injury, the State of Texas at the time in fact allowed many people who had not even a basic engineering degree from an accredited university to call themselves licensed, practicing engineers if they could pay the large annual fees by relative comparison and they could get the signature of 3 curently licensed engineers to sign an affidavit that you had been engaged in PE activities in the state for the last 5 years. This resulted in about a dozen people that I knew personally who called themselves Licensed PE’s in Texas. It was a joke for the other States and “guard rails” were placed to disallow thee Texas PE’s to simply pay the transference fee to switch their license or add additional licensing between States for good cause I might add!
Fast forward to my experience, over these past 30 years of my professional life, of what ‘Murica, which Texas is a microcosm thereof, is.
In a sentence: “check your liberties and Constitution and Bill of Rights at the door”. It was all a “bait-and-switch”.
About 12 years ago, I had a dispute with Devon Energy Company. Actually, not so much a dispute as I called them on the breach of our contract with respect to how oil and gas payments for products taken by Devon from my leasehold would be paid to me pursuant to our agreement and what then was the highest law of land, ie, Texas Supreme Court. Our contract was indisputable and what they were doing clearly breached it.
So, instead of living within the boundaries of the agreement, Devon attornies wrote letters to the State of Texas Board of Licensure for Petroleum Engineers (hereinafter referred to as “the Board”) complaining I was practicing PE without a license in the State. The Board, being the good lap dog they were and are, quickly wrote to me demanding I come to Austin, at my expense, to explain myself.
For what I asked, contracting to sell my mineral and leasehold at terms every landowner in the state does regularly with a third party? Of course they did not want to hear that but instead tried to argue I was practicing PE in Texas without a license.
I patronized the minion lapdogs a moment and stated while I totally disagreed with their assertions, for the sake of argument, asked why would they have a problem if in fact instead of me engaging in my lawful right to negotiate my personal property rights with any fu<7ing entity I so chose which the violation by the complaining party (Devon Energy Co who was stealing me and the other mineral, royalty, and ORRI estate blindly) is why we are inappropriately here, I were instead practicing PE as a licensed PE in a state that required the “National” standard of, well, um, actually having a 4-year BS Degree in said PE and passing a minimum standards exam with a 35% Pass Rate (which I was and advised of such) why the fuss when my credentials far exceed those of folks who the State of Texas at the time allowed to practice and call themselves PE’s without so much as a 4-Yr degree in said PE??????
You can imagine they completely ignored the statement. They would not even answer and quickly and repeatedly performed the childish equivalent of “nah, na, nah, na, nah, nah” with fingers in ears.
Long-story, short, the Board ruled against me and the Assistant Texas Attorney General Frank J. Knapp, Jr promptly filed suit against me. I had to retain legal counsel. The State of Texas, after causing me tens of thousands of dollars in thuggish, unnecessary legal expenses, literally days before we picked a jury trial, settled with me but only agreed to reimburse me for $2,500 of my tens of thousands of actual dollars and expenses in time and out of pocket costs for said thuggish behavior.
I knew then what this country is and was for. The Public Government apparatchiks are to protect the large monopolistic multinational corps against the individual. Texas is a microcosm of the Nation as a whole.
Why must a poor farm kid, who played by the rules and sent himself to college to earn a degree in PE by working weekends, nights, and summers, and then takes it upon himself to prove his highest level of practical and professional attainment at his chosen profession, be made to suffer such fools? Why should the “authorities” derive any right to prevent me from engaging in commerce in any form, especially if I am licensed at the highest level of competency recognized in the nation and which far exceeds their mandates of the time? I was taught in grade school the US CONstitution was to ensure the “life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness” and to protect our “personal property rights” was first and foremost THE goal of governments everywhere. As my grandfather so eloquently recognized this sort of tripe: “Bull Shit”.
We must put a stop to this. It is about nothing more than “control” by an unelected “administrative agencies” bought and paid for by Big Corps. Not just in Texas but across the nation.
My US Constitutional Rights were violated. They will be again if we don’t make our Federal and State Governments accountable to the people again and damn soon.
