America's Top 10 Fears

Tyler Durden's picture

While nearly a decade ago, Americans celebrated the arrival of "hope and change", since then "hope" (not to mention "change") has been all but eradicated (if only for the vast majority of the population), and has been replaced with an emotion that is its polar opposite. Fear.

Fear of government corruption (which we were delighted to find in the top spot), fear of terrorist attacks, fear of the NSA, fear of ID theft, fear of cyberterrorists, and even fear of economic collapse... all the way in 8th place.

And yes, "fear of clowns" is in there too.

In an attempt to quantify these fears, the Chapman University Survey of American Fears provides an unprecedented look into the fears of average Americans.

In April of 2015, a random sample of 1,541 adults from across the United States were asked their level of fear about eighty-eight different fears across a huge variety of topics ranging from crime, the government, disasters, personal anxieties, technology and many others.

Domains of Fear

There were 10 major “domains” of fear addressed by the survey, including:

Fear Domain Types of Questions Included
Crime Murder, rape, theft, burglary, fraud, identity theft
Daily Life Romantic rejection, ridicule, talking to strangers
Environment Global warming, overpopulation, pollution
Government Government corruption, Obamacare, drones, gun control, immigration issues
Judgment of others Appearance, weight, age, race
Man-Made Disasters Bio-warfare, terrorism, nuclear attacks
Natural Disasters Earthquakes, droughts, floods, hurricanes
Personal Anxieties Tight spaces, public speaking, clowns, vaccines
Personal Future Dying, illness, running out of money, unemployment
Technology Artificial intelligence, robots, cyber-terrorism

Top Fear Domains, 2015

Each fear question asks Americans to rate their level of fear on a scale ranging from 1 (not afraid) to 4 (very afraid). The average score for each domain of fear provides insight into what types of fear are of greatest concern to Americans in 2015.

On average, Americans expressed the highest levels of fear about man-made disasters, such as terrorist attacks, followed by fears about technology, including corporate and government tracing of personal data and fears about the government (such as government corruption and ObamaCare). The complete, ranked list of Domains of Fear follows:

Domain of Fear Average Fear Score (out of 4)

Environment 1.97
Personal Future 1.95

Nice manipulation for the Progressives as in Man Made Kind of Disasters, like AGW, etc.

Everyone has fears. We all do. The issue is how do we control these fears. Do we simply exercise personal control over our fears or do we organize to demand effective action from the government to establish fear-mitigation regimes -- the latter being the organizational hallmark of preference in the modern world.

I know what you're thinking. No one can possibly address all the fears on that list. The world is a big, scary place to be sure. We simply can't acknowledge and manage every fear in a scientific way. But with computers growing in exponential power every day, these fears that the world will not be able to address every fear will fade into insignificance as every person will be assigned a custom-tailored fear-management software package to address zer every fear (zer=gender neutral pronoun).

My greatest fear at the moment has to do with unmoderated comments sections of popular websites. Peeps attacking other peeps for dissenting opinions. Soon all these lonely, dark places will be exposed to the light of reason and rationally responsive calls to eliminate their excesses.

Lets' be perfectly clear:  All "terrorists" are trained and funded funded by some government, so all terrorism is "government".  Thus, all acts of "terrorism" are in fact political acts.  They are acts of government policy, or government-wannabee policy.

So all fear of terrorism is fear of government. Since "government" is about claiming a legal monoploy on the use of force, it is not a stretch to say that living under government is living under a constant threat of force, and thus government is terrorism.

There are no Nazi moderators around here and you will find that there is little to no attacking of people with dissenting opinions in the comments section.

Not a "smidgeon of corruption" anywhere. Lois Lerner, a little bad management, nothing illegal. Jon Corzine, the same. Fast and Furious, just bad judgment. DEA hookers, all in the line of duty. FBI hacking hostile reporters, just a little overzealous, no damage done.

NSA listening to you is for your own good along with the TSA professional gropers. Add DEA, ICE, IRS, and a hundred other police and enforcement agencies...all with guns and you suddenly wake up to the idea it is all in the best interests of us, the good citizens of the USA. Do not resist, just submit and it will all work out for the best. Get your mind right and realize that govenment control equals individual liberty. A million bad things would happen every single day if not for the nice government enforcer there to invisibly and occassionally visibly protect you from others.

Define fear...

Maybe they'll talk about some subject after they've seen a movie about it but in general people don't fear that much besides their job, money if they live paycheck to paycheck and other typical day to day things.

Maybe their biggest fear is a loss of internet connection and their electricity being cut off by a event so they can't charge their phones or tablets.

If they feared so much, people would prepare and only a few do.

Remember the 60's, 70,s and 80's? People dug bunckers and prepared. In the 90's the said fuck it and started living like there's no tomorrow and spend alike. That never stopped. Tomorrow may be something to think about but next year is way way in the future and "our government will solve all future problems".

On the contrary. Fear is the most powerful tool others use to get you to conform to their will. Most people do not have fear on their conscious minds as they go through their daily lives but fear dictates the choices we make all day long. This happens without us being aware that others have dictated our choices  through persistant reinforcing messages.

One of the greatest fears is expressed as "I'm only one person. I can't change anything!" So you go along with your head down trying not to be noticed. How do you think that train of thought got put in your head? I'll bet it wasn't because of your experiences of getting whacked when you tried. It is because you were conditioned to be too afraid to try.

The NRA will fall. It’s inevitable. Just look at the demographics. The Washington Post, October 19, 2015
by Adam Winkler professor at UCLA School of Law

The fastest-growing minority group in America is Latinos. Between 2000 and 2010, the nation’s Latino population grew by 43 percent. Hispanics, which make up 17 percent of the population today, are expected to grow to 30 percent of the population in the coming decades.

Gun control is extremely popular among Hispanics, with 75 percent favoring gun safety over gun rights.

Asian Americans also represent a growing anti-gun demographic. Although only about 5 percent of the population today, the Asian American population is predicted to triple over the next few decades. A recent poll of Asian American registered voters found that 80 percent supported stricter gun laws.

I live in a blue-collar, lower-middle-class rental apts neighborhood.

From my front apt, within 200 yards, I know there are 10 different ethnic groups represented, I can point out where each lives.  Identifiably different to me is not the strongest measure, so there are probably more.  But I can begin with the Russian-speaking Cambodian surgeon across the street, the Pakistanis below him and to our left, Mexican and black behind us, ME I think Syrian or Lebanese behind us, Indian above us, Chinese and Mexican to our right.  Vietnamese further down the block.

We get along fine.  Dog walkers recognize most everyone, everyone is friendly, will stop to talk.  We don't exactly know each other, but I know the names of people in adjacent apts and buildings, recognize others.  Bits of reputation get around in casual comments, interesting to watch.

It is not a white-vs anybody problem it is a problem of governments screwing everything up.  If anyone thinks they live in a culture that is even close to good for human minds, they are probably Amish or one of the remaining hunter-gatherer tribes.  Those are the last that don't have a problem of drug addiction, suicide, violence by young men against their own societies.  Those things have to be blamed on our modern world, Amish don't have them.  It is not an accident that the Amish do not allow their children to go past 8th grade, and that they would take them out earlier than that, if they could.

I am not Amish, but we took out kid out of school 7th grade.  Language tutors, music, dance, soccer.  He decided on everything else, which include many many many hours of games, Youtube on everything.  At 19, he is by far the best educated of the people we know of his age, and by far the most grown up.  Not just our judgment, perfect as our judgments are.

The first question is "Do we have any sources of thought completely independent of hidden influence", not "Do we have a problem of multiple cultures" or any of the other questions they define for us.

If they can define the question, they don't have to care about the answer. 100 years of scientific study and practice on their side, accumulated experience and measures of effectiveness, the relationships of PR firms and editors and writers and academics are a major system that work upon and originate flows that end up in all of our minds.

Dismantling of private Central Banking is a step to ending WAR.

Prohibition against deficit spending is a step to ending WAR.

IF a Government cannot borrow it is very likely that it cannot go to WAR or sustain it for long.

People will not be productive and hand their earnings over to the MIC/War Profitieers for very long without extreme cause.

People will not throw their Sons into the inferno of WAR if the economy is sound and they are not threatened.

Firm control of Monetary and Fiscal Policies are key to ending the plunder of the Oligarchies and Nationless Banksters that is called WAR.

It IS the corruption of government that is the prime instigation of WAR.

It is hard to replace old-fashioned death control systems with better death controls. It is IMPOSSIBLE to have NO death control systems whatsoever, as long as any life continues to survive. It is hard to replace governments operating as the biggest forms of organized crime with governments that are better organized crime. It is IMPOSSIBLE to have NO organized crime, and therefore, it is IMPOSSIBLE to have NO governments, as long as any life continues to survive.

That 58% of Americans recognize Corrupt Governments as their greatest threat is a correct assessment of the degree to which their Governments are dominated by Deep State Shadow Governments. Clearly, after the international banksters recaptured control over the American public "money" supply, then there was NO REAL DEMOCRACY, but rather, runaway plutocracy, where the greatest source of "wealth" for those plutocrats was their ability to dominate POLITICAL FUNDING, resulting in governments ENFORCING FRAUDS by privately controlled banks.

Those vicious spirals of POLITICAL FUNDING ENFORCING FRAUDS have resulted in A FAKE DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC, within which systems it was possible for that social situation to develop to the point where 58% of those surveyed would correctly recognize that Corrupt Government was what they should be most afraid of! (Furthermore, that is pretty well universally the case everywhere else in the world, more or less, since Neolithic Civilizations' social pyramid systems were always based on the ability to back up lies with violence developing at an exponential rate.)

The deeper problems are the degree to which the vast majority of people have been brainwashed to believe in bullshit, and therefore, tend to want to continue to believe in bullshit. Indeed, the degree to which bullshit has been built into the dominate natural languages and philosophy of science makes it practically IMPOSSIBLE for people to think in sufficiently different ways, and even more IMPOSSIBLE to communicate in sufficiently different ways:

HOW AND WHY

DID THAT HAPPEN,

"GOVERNMENTS"

ARE THE BIGGEST FORMS OF ORGANIZED CRIME

CONTROLLED BY THE BEST ORGANIZED GANGS?

Continuing to analyze those social facts using the same old false fundamental dichotomies continues to result in promoting bogus "solutions" based upon impossible ideals, which always backfire badly, and cause the opposite to happen in the real world, because that is being done by controlled opposition groups, which stay within the same frame of reference that was originally made and maintained by the biggest bullies' bullshit world views.

It is correct.

Think about getting into your private automobile and hitting the public rights of way. Are you not worried about some commercial traffic violation that an armed public official will stop you for and make demands that you are afraid not to comply with??

Traffic is commerce. A motor vehicle is a commercial conveyance. An automobile is a private conveyance. A passenger is one who pays a driver to transport him to another location.

Go to court and the lawyers, judges, and the police are all public officials. They ignore your rights and threaten you into agreeing to be disciplined by them. The lower courts are administrative, ignore the Constitution and Supreme Court decisions. They are acting for the benefit of the holders of the debt of the bankrupt Federal Government.

I get what you're saying. Maybe I'm just so numb to it, sort of figuring that's what's always been like, this corruption and crap from the government.

But then, if people are really that worried about it—Is this study new, or has this fear been hear all along?—then we are facing a very serious shift in how people view their government and might be a serious precursor to radical civil unrest -> strife -> revolution?

I just find this shocking that people would see this in the large amount that they do, as most really don't have much interaction with society that would expose them to this.

Maybe it's a media driven thing, with the news getting out about so many transgressions by the government and authorities?

I dont fear anything...the government will take care of my health, I have flouride in the water for my teeth,  my budget is ok with GMO food, not worried about crime because I can call 911, the police will protect me,  not worried about natural disasters because NASA will warn me ahead of time and FEMA will bring me food,  the politicians have to be corrupt sometimes to protect our country and keep it strong so I trust them, overpopulation is not a problem the bankers are already taking care of that, chemtrails to fix global warming,  if I dont like my looks I can change my sexual appearance with free obamacare, I dont mind living in my moms basement, not worried about the economy because i have an EBT card,  plenty of porn websites (I saw a clown doing a transgender hah),  hillary clinton will fix the middle class, and just think how easy life will be when I get a chip in my hand or forehead.   life is good, I dont know why people are worried.  I have more but American Idol is on and I need to watch the democrat debate I missed, but I recorded it for later...Aint technology wonderful?

Isn't there enough democrats in America that "Having to pay for things" should be on the list?

    Here's some more 'bogeyman propaganda'.

It just goes to show, there's no such thing as red vs blue team politics, as this piece of shite came from the N.Y.T.

Russian Presence Near Undersea Cables Concerns U.S. - The New York Times

The informed voters know how full of shit the Obunga administration is, so now they have to go after the unemployed, internet addicted, low information masses to spread their fear.

If skippy can't play games with all his friends in other countries, from the comfort of his basement all hell is going to break loose. </sarc>

Why are more Americans concerned about corporate spying than government spying? Who gives a shit if Walmart has my information? Oh no, they might send me junk mail! When is the last time a company has caused an American to flee the country and seek asylum in Russia?

As an example of how screwed up society is in the USA almost 7% of the population (about 21,000,000 people) are afraid or very afraid of CLOWNS.  Maybe they are really talking about the people in CONgress . . .

I don't understand because the Juggalo Homies seems to have the right anti-establishment slant:

With God absent from the top of the list, the rest of the list becomes utterly unsuprising.

Love these comments...ZH people have poison-ality and an excellent sense of humor. Years of posting on sites like Paul Krugman's NYT blog have left me scarred. Government drones have a) no personality, and b) no sense of humor...not to mention being dishonest, hypocritical and just generally creepy.

Truth is, my sentiments were with the left because I grew up poor and feel a kind of solidarity with ordinary people, i.e., the kind drafted into armies and sent to die in wars of empire they'll never hope to understand. Unfortunately, like George Orwell, I've been forced to recognize that the left is even more malevolent than the right and that is saying something. Basically, the left is a lynch mob pretending to be a friend of the people and on the side of the good, like a pederast priest...

Its hard not to be able to visualize a high probability of something major happening just based on the visual length of the list.  Many people seem to be afraid for good reason? I find it appropriate that good old Gov is right there at the top, right where it needs to be.

When we fear our government the most..... are we able to cut their benefits and pay due to lack of performance? If not, then why not? We are afraid of the people we pay to rule us? Wow, something is backwards here.

My number one fear?

Taxes , Debt and Insurance premiums.

Number two fear?

EMP/Solar Flare

Number three fear?

All the people starving and turning violent after Fear number two happens.

Number four fear?

That everything stays exactly the way it is now.
