Does Red Meat – or FAKE Meat – Cause Cancer?

The World Health Organization said today that eating even unprocessed red meat “probably” causes cancer.

But as we reported in 2012, it may not be red meat – but FAKE meat – that’s killing us.

Specifically, the modern factory farm creates meat that is much higher in saturated fats – and much lower in healthy omega 3s – than traditional grass-fed cows.

Feedlot cows are also dosed with large quantities of antibiotics and estrogen.

Worse, the FDA allows a drug banned in 160 nations and responsible for hyperactivity, muscle breakdown and 10 percent mortality in pigs to be added to animal feed shortly before slaughter.

While the practice of feeding cow parts to other cows – one of the main causes of mad cow disease – has been banned on paper, cow blood “products”, feather meal, pig and fish protein, and chicken manure are all still fed to cows.   Remember – unlike bacteria or viruses – heat does NOT kill the deadly prions which cause mad cow disease. (And cows are fed to  chickens, pigs and fish – which are then fed back to the cows – so cows may end up eating the prions from other cows anyway.)

And yet the government is so protective of the current model of industrial farming that private citizens such as ranchers and meat packers are prohibited from testing for mad cow disease.

And genetically-engineered meat isn’t even tested for human safety. (Read this if you think there is a scientific consensus that gm foods are safe.)

On top of that, there are a slew of meat additives added after butchering.

So yes … factory-farmed, mass-produced red meat may be bad for us.  But that doesn’t necessarily mean that organic, grass-fed meat is …

the only problem is that organic grass fed is already expenisve, and will soon go through the roof.  good luck feeding a family of 4 organic grass fed.  oh unless you are in the 1% club, then no worries!

I posted this once before... apparently some missed it. Apparently some feel the need to whine.

Here's how I buy my beef. Every year I go to the local town and country fair which holds a 4H livestock auction. I buy the whole steer which is grass fed. Then I have it butchered locally.

My cost - between $2500 - $3500 per steer (generally depending on the state of the economy). Butchering costs ~$300 to$400.

Now here's the kicker... It's a charity auction. You get to write off the price of the steer on your taxes. Perfectly legal, been doing it for 8 years now since I moved to the Midwest..

Standard Disclaimer: Now why don't you and your fellow upvoters write me a check because I just gave you all one of the best free fucking clues you'll ever get. You'll also need to get two big deep freezers. A steer produces a LOT of beef. If you can't afford this on your own, go in with a friend.

My parents regularly went in with others to share a cow or hog.  Same with deer and excess birds from a dove shoot.  Even when they went fishing and came back with a big haul, those were shared with others, too.  Catch & release was unheard of.  It was catch and eat where I came from.

Of course, that was just normal, and carried over to gardens & agricultural products, too. If you had an excess, it was simply handed out among those in your community.  Key word = community.  If you are hanging with the 4-H Club, you are probably well involved in yours.

Never thought of a tax deduction angle, but I'm going to pass it along.  Thanks.

Move to the country. Grow your own beef. Then you can be poor, and well-fed, and you know what's in your beef. As for the chemtrail residue, I simply have to invoke the Serenity prayer. Some things I can't control.

This is a major opportunity for fraudsters; selling non organic produce (whether meat or veg) as organic. Big mark ups. Thieves and cheaters can't resist this scam, so buyer beware! The taste is often a tell, but is not foolproof.

Growing your own veg, for those who can, cuts out the middle man.

Iowa agricultural consultant, Howard Vlieger, says GMO-fed livestock have inflamed and ulcerated stomachs. A Danish pig farmer switched to GMO feed and it resulted in numerous deaths from ulcers, bloat and loss of appetite. He also had a massive diarrhea problem on the farm. After returning to non-GMO feed, overall health improved, the average litter size and milk production increased, the deaths ceased and the diarrhea stopped. Both diarrhea and bloat are common symptoms of autistic children.

It's the too thin that should catch you eye,  Sausage casings have been made from animal intestines from way before any of us were born.  If you're eating sausage, heed this advice:  Cook it well done.  Then "too thin" won't make a rat's ass difference.

Another major problem is that even true grass fed fully organically grown beef, lamb, fish, whatever, is eating fully chemtrailed fodder, ie, loaded with enough aluminum, etc, to reduce you all to slobbering idiots.

We buy nothing, (as much as possible) produced in North America.

It is all bad for you in high quantities.

I know people who like to eat steak will trot out the grass fed BS, but if you eat a diet high in animal products you are going to die earlier than if you didn't.

Our preferred cooking techniques also imbibe our food with plenty of cancer causing chemicals.  (smoked meats anyone?)

Go ahead and flame me, I don't care. I eat lots of meat. I love pigs the most.  BBQ (Eastern Carolina only) is my all time favorite.

But let's not pretend it is healthy.

Eat however you want.  Go ahead, that is free will.

But don't follow this BS that if we eat only grass fed, free range, massaged with sake while listening to delta waves relaxation music it will be healthy.

pods, everything causes cancer on a long enough time line.  Or death in one way or another.  Hell, drinking too much water can kill you.  It's hard to say that you lived a memorable life if you died at 25.  But at 62?  Or 72? 

 

Now, for smoked meats causing cancer, you should look to the difference between thin blue smoke and  billowing white smoke.  Most people think that shitloads of billowing white smoke makes the meat taste better.  Not only is this not true, but billowing white smoke means that there is creosote being deposited on your meal.  If you are running a smoker with wood, you should run it with the cleanest burning wood fire you can manage.  And fuck the 225f or below bullshit. 

 

In the end, I could  be wrong about creosote vs non creosote smoke being an issue.  Yet, smoke acts as a preservative.  Understand that and you'll understand that in a system without refrigeration and JIT delivery systems, starvation kills faster than nitrates, nitrites and pulled pork caused cancer.

My contention with allowing people "free will" over their eating choices is they eat like shit, tax the healthcare system, and inevitably make poor choices that destroy the planet. The farming of cattle, for example, releases more CO2 than all of the cars on the planet, not to mention the nitrogen runoff causing ocean deadzones and the methane that these animals release. People eat too much damn meat and it's causing heart disease, cancer, and ultimately aiding in everything falling apart. Futhermore even the people that are all gung-ho about "organic" and "grass fed" don't really have any idea what they are talking about. It is a physical impossibility, because there is not enough pasture land on the planet, to have everyone eat animals that are treated better. In the end, we've surrendered our free will to what the planet decides to do with us. And Mother Nature is a bitch.

I can see your point of view.

Taxing the healthcare system is a problem with our beggar thy neighbor system though, not eating.  If everyone ate well, there would still be a problem forcing one to pay for another's care.

CO2 bothers me not at all, unless we are rapidly losing it.  Lack of CO2 is a problem, excess is not.

Phosphates cause more of a problem than nitrogen, and farming today is starting to address this issue.  Burning food and government meddling in ag markets tend to screw things up worse.

With you on the meat eating thing though.  It is known that eating more than 5% of your daily calories from animal products introduces cancer into the equation.

Heart disease is more of a general diet effect.  Inflammation can be caused by improper gut bacteria, which meat tends to foster, leading to inflammatory diseases such as heart disease.

The biggest bitch is that if everyone took on a sustainable attitude towards living, the world would still collapse.  

Our money system depends on exponential expansion. So all talk of sustainability is moot.

The CO2 will likely pose a problem though as most modern science is claiming it is the leading cause of climate change. I don't really care if you agree or not as you're not arguing with my viewpoints. As I said in a post a day or two ago, the debate about climate change or a changing planet is over. We've either got to deal with the consequences or perish. Honestly it's probably too late to do anything anyhow. Supposedly climate change comes 10,000 times faster than evolution so we're probably all going to starve in the not too distant future.

You're spot on about the 5% animal products in your diet upping the ante for cancer. If you've read The China Study you'd know they performed very similar experiments with casein (dairy protein). Anytime they fed mice 20% of their calories with casein they started developing tumors but they noticed nothing abnormal at 5%.

There is no such thing as sustainability when the world has this many people and owned animals on it. You simply cannot provide for everyone in a sustainable manner. It is not physically possible. You can blame the money system if you want, and I agree it IS a big problem. But I believe the real problem that was overlooked when the asshats in charge were creating our system is that they failed to take into account finite resources with an ever expanding population. In the not too distant future, oil and potable water are going to begin culling the population. That is to say nothing of the other problems we face like climate change, disease outbreaks, over population, massive animal/fish dieoffs, and nuclear war.

Then along comes a factoid like the one I discovered while preparing my recent piece on the recent blockbuster Consumer Reports study on supermarket chicken and antibiotic-resistant bacteria. I learned that at the industrial hatcheries that churn out chicks for the poultry industry, eggs are commonly injected with tiny amounts of an antibiotic called gentamicin, which is used in people to treat a variety of serious bacterial infections.
