Furious China Summons U.S. Ambassador, Slams Obama Decision To "Threaten Peace" With Warship Challenge

Tyler Durden's picture

Update: CHINA SUMMONS U.S. AMBASSADOR OVER SOUTH CHINA SEA PATROL: CCTV

Well, the USS Lassen sailed within 12-nautical miles of Subi Reef and surprisingly, World War III did not break out overnight.

(USS Lassen)

(Subi reef)

Nine months of tension between Washington and Beijing over the latter’s land reclamation efforts in The South China Sea culminated on Monday with President Obama’s decision to send a guided missile destroyer to China’s man-made military outposts on a “freedom of navigation” exercise. As we put it on Monday evening:

"The ball is now squarely in China's court. The question now is whether Beijing will back down and concede that "sovereignty" somehow means something different with regard to the islands than it does with respect to the mainland or whether Xi will stick to his guns (no pun intended) and take a pot shot at a US destroyer."

In short, some feared that based on recent rhetoric out of Beijing (e.g. the PLA will “stand up and use force”) that China might actually fire upon the US-flagged vessel or at least move to surround it in what might mark the first step on the road to war.

Ultimately, that didn't happen as China apparently decided to take the high road for now and avoid an escalation that might have had far-reaching consequences.

That said, Beijing isn't happy. Here's more from Bloomberg

China said it will take “all necessary measures” to defend its territory after the U.S. sailed a warship through waters claimed by China in the disputed South China Sea, a move the government in Beijing called a threat to peace and stability in Asia.

“The behavior of the U.S. warship threatened China’s sovereignty and national interest, endangered the safety of the island’s staff and facilities, and harmed the regional peace and stability,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang said in a statement today. “The Chinese side expressed its strong discontent and firm opposition.”

The comments came hours after the USS Lassen passed within 12-nautical miles of Subi Reef, an island built by China as a platform to assert its claim to almost 80 percent of one of the world’s busiest waterways. By passing so close to the man-made island, the U.S. is showing it doesn’t recognize that the feature qualifies for a 12-nautical mile territorial zone under international law.

The patrol marks the most direct attempt by the U.S. to challenge China’s territorial claims and comes weeks after President Barack Obama told President Xi Jinping at a Washington summit that the U.S. would enforce freedom of navigation and that China should refrain from militarizing the waterway.

In a strongly-worded statement, Lu said the USS Lassen had “illegally” entered Chinese waters and that “relevant Chinese departments monitored, shadowed and warned the U.S. ship.” China has “indisputable” sovereignty over the Spratly Islands and surrounding waters, Lu said.

“What the U.S. is doing now will only damage the stability in the South China Sea, and send the wrong message to neighboring nations such as the Philippines and encourage them to take some risky behavior,” said Xu Liping, a professor of Southeast Asian studies at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, a government-linked institute.

While it's not entirely clear what professor Xu Liping means by "encourage the Philippines to take some risky behavior," it's worth noting that Washington's provocation is in some respects explicity designed to embolden America's regional allies. That is, this isn't going on in Washington's backyard. This is simply the US responding to calls from its friends in the South Pacific to counter what they view as Chinese aggression by letting Beijing know that Big Brother isn't going to stand for any bullying from the PLA. That gambit appears to have paid off - for the time being.

As for what comes next, Malcolm Davis, an assistant professor in China-Western relations at Bond University on Australia’s Gold Coast tells Bloomberg China could move to set up a no-fly zone:

China may choose to respond without directly challenging U.S. ships with its Navy or coast guard. It could declare an Air Defense Identification Zone over the South China Sea, or speed up the militarization of the area by deploying extra forces, including combat aircraft, to the islands.

“The ball would then be back in the U.S.’s court,” Davis said. “A Chinese attempt to enforce an ADIZ over the South China Sea would increase tensions with its neighbors, most notably Vietnam, the Philippines and Malaysia, and they would place increasing pressure on Washington not to back down.”

In other words, China doesn't need to fire on a US destroyer to ratchet up the pressure. Beijing can simply continue to do what it's done up until now; that is, militarize the region and essentially dare the US to take action beyond sailing by and waving.

We suspect we'll see plenty of new satellite images over the coming weeks and months which purport to show the extent to which the PLA is beefing up its defenses in the face of unnecessary (not to mention extremely petty) posturing on Washington's part.

After being ask whether China and the US's flagging economies would induce their respective leaderships to foment or

over dramatize a confrontation to divert the public's attention away from economic issues, a Chinese spokesman, Mai Wa Tah,

incredulously responded  "We Kah Bu Ki !!!",  Then when asked if he realized Kabuki was a Japanese word he replied "Fuk Yu !!!".

This prompted another correspondent to ask if the two nations' behavior wasn't reminiscent of a couple of street thugs locked

in a petty territorial feud, Mr. Tah then angrily yelled "We Gang Bang !!!" and stormed from the podium.

International maritime law stipulates that a submerged rock outside of a nation's territorial sea (generally 12 nautical miles) can't be claimed as territory by any nation. Per Wiki: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Socotra_Rock

The islands are submerged rocks, you cannot claim them.

They are illegal. And by China's own position on Socotra Rock they contradict maritime law.  And that my fine fellows is why they did not, and will not go to the UN over this.

They're not even rocks, they're piles of coral and skeletons of ocean life piled on top of each other for millenia. On top of this pile, near the surface, growth continues, so these islands continue to grow on their own when left alone. The Chinese have essentially just ruined the natural state of coral atolls for their own military and political gain. Every environmentalist in the world should be up-in-arms over what they did.

China did this because they want to control shipping in the busiest shipping lane in the world from the air.

All that power was made moot by nuclear weapons, which is why you haven't seen any direct conflicts between nuclear powers EVER. Total war is limited to situations where both sides aren't nuclear armed.

But, of course, now the Russians and the Chinese have new ultra fast, ultra long range cruise missiles that can take out a carrier in an instant, a fact that COMPLETELY negates the conventional US navy. Never mind that Chinese subs have shown that they can sneak right into the center of a carrier group in the middle of conducting war games completely unnoticed--until they surface.

Yeah you're right LL, that's not particularly news.  What caught my attention was...

What the U.S. is doing now will only damage the stability in the South China Sea, and send the wrong message to neighboring nations such as the Philippines and encourage them to take some risky behavior,” said Xu Liping, a professor of Southeast Asian studies at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, a government-linked institute.

Let me first say, I have an extremely dim view of China.  It is a bizarre cauldron of Maoism, consumerism, and old fashioned oriental tyranny.  Both China and the USA are the prime engines of this new world order beast system (note that our overlords praised, openly, Mao's excretions of vileness.)

With that in mind, the professor is correct. This is NWO modus operandi: In order to produce a conflict, certain interested parties have egged on weak 'allies' to pick fights with regional powers.

Though controversial, a good example of this was Poland and Germany.  The UK's powers gave Poland all kinds of assurances of support in the event of a conflict.  Poland did do a lot of barking as a result and was rather unkind to the ethnic Germans within her borders.

Well, we sure know how that ended: Total, absolute, and full betrayal of Poland by the odious drunkard Churchill.  Germany romped Poland and then the Soviets continued the domination.

I would want to think that the Philippines are not so stupid as to nuzzle up to Uncle Sam's faux-mammary venom sac.  But human nature being what it is, I would not be surprised if Manila does something dumb.

Saudi Arabia doesn't sell oil to the highest bidder, oil is handed out for protection. US is still far more capable of projecting power to protect them than China.

China could promise to go to war against Iran to sweeten the pot, which the US is unwilling to do for the moment much to Saudi Arabia's (and Israel's) chagrin, but then they'd be in opposition to Russia and I don't think they want to be.

Obama is screwed either way. If he doesn't do anything, like in Syria, he is a weak leader. And when he does something in the South China Sea, he is the worst leader since Chamberlain (which is an interesting comparison since Chamberlain didn't do anything to stop Germany). Guess some want him to stand up to an irrational leader in Putin over a country that nobody carries about versus making a stand against the Chinese who are trying to claim eminent domain over reefs in the middle of open ocean and in the middle of valuable sea lanes.

Iceland's and Britain's fish trawlers and warships once played that game too, over a 200 miles exclusive economic zone all around Iceland

edit: now I've found it. I did not know or remember anything about this incident, thank you for hinting about it

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1988_Black_Sea_bumping_incident

"The Black Sea bumping incident of 12 February 1988 occurred when American cruiser USS Yorktown tried to exercise the claimed right of innocent passage through Soviet territorial waters in the Black Sea during the Cold War. The cruiser was bumped by the Soviet frigate Bezzavetny with the intention of pushing the Yorktown into international waters. The incident also involved the destroyer USS Caron which, while also claiming the innocent passage, was intentionally shouldered by a Soviet Mirka-class frigate SKR-6. The Yorktown reported minor damage to hull, with no holing or risk of flooding. The Caron was not damaged.

At the time the Soviet Union recognized the right of innocent passage for warships in its territorial waters solely in designated sea lanes.

The United States believed there was no legal basis for a coastal nation to limit warship transits to sea lanes only.

Subsequently the U.S. Department of State found that unlike the English-language text of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, the Russian-language text of Article 22, paragraph 1 allowed the coastal state to regulate the right of innocent passage whenever necessary. Following the incident, the Soviet Union expressed a commitment to resolve the issue of innocent passage in Soviet territorial waters. "

The fools who wrote the maritime laws instituted socialism on the seas, and surprise surprise, people are exploiting the nonsense of socialism for personal gain--and the Chinese are MASTERS of that particular trade.

The solution is to scrap current maritime law and allow "homesteading" of land beneath waterways by individuals.  Technology has progressed to the point now that there is not much difference between a modern undersea colony (allowing a territorial claim) and a circa 1575 overseas colony (allowing a territorial claim).

The deepest oceans might be too difficult to allow for homesteading, so they can be treated just like unclaimed territory once was. IE its up for grabs to whoeer can get there first and hold it. But for the vast majority, submarine patrols would be fine.

As for navigation, if you have mixed your labor with that watery land, you own it, so you can prevent navigation by building a fence, just like we do on land.

Too bad it won't happen until some large group of brave souls actually go out and build a habitat on the seafloor and declare themselves a nation. And then another one, and then another, with military power.

You can ignore reality, but you can't ignore the consequences of ignoring reality.

China doesn't have to actually fire a volley over the Lassen's bow to show they're not bluffing.  All they have to do is crash the US bond market.  And man, do they have the ammo to do that.  Of course if China were to dump their trillions of dollars worth of US bonds all at once they would also be shooting themselves in the foot as the value of those bonds would crash before they could even unload the entire hopper.  So they can damned well take their time about it, all the while exerting immense pressure on the US bond market.

As has been recently reported, China's rate of 'bond dumpage' has been increasing at an alarming rate over the past 3 or 4 months.  Don't be surprised to see that rate double now.  Even at an accelerated rate of selling, they can dump US treasuries garbage in a steady stream for a few years before they run out.

To say that US foreign policy is childish and very poorly thought out would be the understatement of the century.  How f'king dumb can leadership get?
