Furious China Summons U.S. Ambassador, Slams Obama Decision To "Threaten Peace" With Warship Challenge

Well, the USS Lassen sailed within 12-nautical miles of Subi Reef and surprisingly, World War III did not break out overnight.

Nine months of tension between Washington and Beijing over the latter’s land reclamation efforts in The South China Sea culminated on Monday with President Obama’s decision to send a guided missile destroyer to China’s man-made military outposts on a “freedom of navigation” exercise. As we put it on Monday evening:
"The ball is now squarely in China's court. The question now is whether Beijing will back down and concede that "sovereignty" somehow means something different with regard to the islands than it does with respect to the mainland or whether Xi will stick to his guns (no pun intended) and take a pot shot at a US destroyer."
In short, some feared that based on recent rhetoric out of Beijing (e.g. the PLA will “stand up and use force”) that China might actually fire upon the US-flagged vessel or at least move to surround it in what might mark the first step on the road to war.
Ultimately, that didn't happen as China apparently decided to take the high road for now and avoid an escalation that might have had far-reaching consequences.
That said, Beijing isn't happy. Here's more from Bloomberg:
China said it will take “all necessary measures” to defend its territory after the U.S. sailed a warship through waters claimed by China in the disputed South China Sea, a move the government in Beijing called a threat to peace and stability in Asia.
“The behavior of the U.S. warship threatened China’s sovereignty and national interest, endangered the safety of the island’s staff and facilities, and harmed the regional peace and stability,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang said in a statement today. “The Chinese side expressed its strong discontent and firm opposition.”
The comments came hours after the USS Lassen passed within 12-nautical miles of Subi Reef, an island built by China as a platform to assert its claim to almost 80 percent of one of the world’s busiest waterways. By passing so close to the man-made island, the U.S. is showing it doesn’t recognize that the feature qualifies for a 12-nautical mile territorial zone under international law.
The patrol marks the most direct attempt by the U.S. to challenge China’s territorial claims and comes weeks after President Barack Obama told President Xi Jinping at a Washington summit that the U.S. would enforce freedom of navigation and that China should refrain from militarizing the waterway.
In a strongly-worded statement, Lu said the USS Lassen had “illegally” entered Chinese waters and that “relevant Chinese departments monitored, shadowed and warned the U.S. ship.” China has “indisputable” sovereignty over the Spratly Islands and surrounding waters, Lu said.
“What the U.S. is doing now will only damage the stability in the South China Sea, and send the wrong message to neighboring nations such as the Philippines and encourage them to take some risky behavior,” said Xu Liping, a professor of Southeast Asian studies at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, a government-linked institute.
While it's not entirely clear what professor Xu Liping means by "encourage the Philippines to take some risky behavior," it's worth noting that Washington's provocation is in some respects explicity designed to embolden America's regional allies. That is, this isn't going on in Washington's backyard. This is simply the US responding to calls from its friends in the South Pacific to counter what they view as Chinese aggression by letting Beijing know that Big Brother isn't going to stand for any bullying from the PLA. That gambit appears to have paid off - for the time being.
As for what comes next, Malcolm Davis, an assistant professor in China-Western relations at Bond University on Australia’s Gold Coast tells Bloomberg China could move to set up a no-fly zone:
China may choose to respond without directly challenging U.S. ships with its Navy or coast guard. It could declare an Air Defense Identification Zone over the South China Sea, or speed up the militarization of the area by deploying extra forces, including combat aircraft, to the islands.
“The ball would then be back in the U.S.’s court,” Davis said. “A Chinese attempt to enforce an ADIZ over the South China Sea would increase tensions with its neighbors, most notably Vietnam, the Philippines and Malaysia, and they would place increasing pressure on Washington not to back down.”
In other words, China doesn't need to fire on a US destroyer to ratchet up the pressure. Beijing can simply continue to do what it's done up until now; that is, militarize the region and essentially dare the US to take action beyond sailing by and waving.
We suspect we'll see plenty of new satellite images over the coming weeks and months which purport to show the extent to which the PLA is beefing up its defenses in the face of unnecessary (not to mention extremely petty) posturing on Washington's part.

Individuals should be able to own that land by mixing their labor with it, and thus deny others the use of it. Ownership is pretty much based on who can hold it. The Law of the Sea is a UN Treaty signed by both nations. According to the Treaty warships are allowed passage in strategic waters so long as they continue on their way. That much the USSA is correct about. Now whether these islands are strategic is another question. Again it's their (USSA) continued gunboat, bomb them into submission diplomacy that is detestable.
This should be settled at the UN,,, not putting two nations that can destroy the planet at odds with each other. If the UN cannot settle the differences than what good is it? What good is signing all the treaties? That said, since the USSA appears to own the UN, lock, stock and barrel one can see China's hesitation.
You recognized a salient point about the United Nations. It is essentially powerless to prevent military conflict between countries. It's primary function is to facilitate international commerce and standardize global health and environmental issues agreed to by its membership.

China can't simply insist that these islands are sovereign territory- it would set a terrible precedent- what would be stopping them- or anyone from simply building up any half-sunken reef and calling it sovereign territory?
On the other hand, it's completely fair of them to do this as the US and the West have been engaging in this type of behavior for centuries. This certainly lends an air of irony to the whole episode.
My hope is that both sides are able to negotiate a mutual decommissioning of these and other military bases. In reality, though, I don't see any side backing down. I expect the Chinese to slow-play this for awhile though while they keep building up these island-bases build more of them.

The fact that China is furious leads me to believe they are not going to touch the Lassen. If they were really ready to match their previous rhetoric, they would just attack the ship and let their actions speak for them. I still say this is a reckless game of poker over something that should not be a large US national security concern. It's more of a regional issue. I don't think risking WW3 is a good idea, especially in poor economic times when leaders might become less predictable.

China just can't artificially extend it's territorial waters like this, it has encroached on waters that once belonged to The Philippines, Vietnam and Malaysia. They are being the bully here. Someone has to put them in their place, and the US is the only player in Asia who can do it. Aggression toward your neighbors is aggression, whether it be from China or anybody else.
If China gets away with this and they start dredging 12 miles off the Caliphonia Coast Obama will sail by it too, staying 12 miles away from it to make a statement. Doesn't much matter as the West Coast will be Mexican after a U.N. Plebicite.

Nothing has happened here, but this destroyer charade did call to mind the Pueblo incident from 1968. Interestingly, perhaps, especially to goldbugs, 1968 was the last year in history that the old greenback silver certificates were redeemable in silver. Final redemption was held shortly after the Pueblo affair developed. That was also the so-called Summer of Love, the first Earth Day, and Woodstock, the peak counterculture moment, was only a year away.
The Vietnam War was escalating and had become a major human disaster. Real estate was topping, stocks were bubbling, inflation was heating up...

According to Reuters, the USS Lassen, like the Russian planes that crossed into Finnish and Turkish airspace, perhaps only crossed briefly into China's territorial waters, no more than a mile or two and no longer than an hour or two.
As the Russian planes were not shot down, neither was the USS Lassen sunk.
There is no doubt that Russia respects the air space of Turkey and Russia.
So we are going to have to wait and see if the US sends more than just one destroyer to patrol the waters around the Spratlys and on a regular basis.
Let's wait to see what China's reactions to that will be.>

China needs independent sources of oil and there is supposed to be a good deal of oil in the South China Seas where these new islands and disputes are erupting. Without oil China will be in the same position that Germany and Japan found themselves in when they both decided to dominate the world scene.
What is being done by the Chinese is a serious threat to the region. However, the simple way to stop it is to get Korea, Japan, Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Australia and put a ban on doing business with China.
Of course, Walmart and Apple will protest loudly. But, with 1/2 the Chinese exports disappearing overnight, I would give the Communist government about 1 month to survive a real revolution from all the out of work workers and business owners revolting.
But even so, what very few realize is the coming robotic revolution which will move most of the Chinese jobs back to the US in robotic factories. China is getting the first glimpse of this process right now as more and more factories in China are converted to automation and robotics and the number of employees are sinking like a rock.
A Chinese embargo would speed up the process and bring a good number of high tech jobs back to the US sooner rather than later.
As I said before , China should build islands near Satan America , create a military base with nukes.
