US Ground Troops In Syria Is "Illegal, Big Mistake", Russia Warns Obama Of "Unpredictable Consequences"

Tyler Durden's picture

On Tuesday, Defense Secretary Ash Carter told the Senate Armed Services Committee that the US would no longer hesitate to engage in “direct action on the ground” in Iraq and Syria.

The change in rhetoric (and apparent shift in strategy) comes just days after the US seemingly prepared the public for what might be coming by releasing helmet cam footage of what Washington says was a raid on an ISIS prison by Delta Force (accompanied by the Peshmerga). 70 prisoners were allegedly freed although not before the US suffered its first combat death in Iraq since 2011.

The timing of the video is suspect, to say the least. It came just days after Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Joe Dunford visited Iraqi PM Haider al-Abadi in an effort to dissuade Baghdad from requesting Russian airstrikes on ISIS targets. In short, it appears as though Washington is trying to simultaneously, i) prove to Mid-East governments that the US can still be effective in the fight against terrorism even as questions remain about ulterior motives and even as Russia racks up gains in Syria, and ii) prepare the public for the possibility that America is about to put boots on the ground in Iraq and Syria. Here’s more from WSJ on Washington’s new “strategy”:

The White House is seriously considering deploying a small squadron of Apache attack helicopters to Iraq as part of a package of new assistance programs to counter Islamic State, according to U.S. officials.

The move could ultimately require the deployment of hundreds more U.S. service members to Iraq. Among other proposals, U.S. officials said some in the military recommend openly deploying a small number of forces on the ground in Syria, embedded among moderate rebels or Kurdish forces there, for the first time.

Pressure is mounting on the regime to change course. Recent Russian intervention in Syria on the side of the regime, and the threat of Moscow intervening in Iraq next, has spurred the U.S. to step up its role, defense officials acknowledge.

Pentagon officials have recommended to the White House that the U.S. deploy as many as eight Apache helicopters and their crews to Iraq. The helicopters, known for their targeting prowess, could work in conjunction with as many as two dozen ground spotters who would embed with local ground forces to call in strikes against Islamic State targets.

Another proposal, which is less likely, would insert small numbers of combat advisers on the front lines with Iraqi forces and possibly with moderate rebels inside Syria. Pentagon officials are also likely to enhance Iraqi intelligence capabilities, possibly through a group on the ground that would serve as a single point of coordination between the U.S. and Iraq, a senior military official said.

Last week, the defense chief said Americans should expect more raids like the joint U.S.-Kurdish operation that took place in the town of Hawija, Iraq, in which 70 prisoners were freed and an American was killed in action, the first since 2011. The U.S. also recently dropped 50 tons of ammunition to an umbrella group of moderate rebel forces inside Syria now known as the Syria-Arab Coalition, or SAC, as part of a renewed effort to strengthen local forces.

Pentagon and White House officials indicated the deployment of Apache helicopters was being given the most serious consideration, and therefore the most likely step.

U.S. officials say momentum is building within the administration to ramp up those efforts even more, capitalizing on the strength of Kurdish and other Iraqi forces.

“I believe we will have an opportunity to reinforce Iraqi success in the days ahead,” Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Joe Dunford told Senate lawmakers at a hearing on Tuesday.

Alright, so let’s see if we can untangle this. Washington intends to send in the Apaches to bolster Iraqi forces both Peshmerga and otherwise. Or at least that’s what it sounds like. The Pentagon is also considering the placement of American ground troops with “moderate” rebels and with the YPG in Syria.

As we’ve detailed extensively (and this isn’t exactly a secret), Iran effectively runs the Iraqi military via its various Shiite militia proxy armies. That’s not an exaggeration. As Reuters reported earlier this month, “the Fifth Iraqi Army Division now reports to the militias’ chain of command, not to the military’s, according to several U.S. and coalition military officials.” So when the Apaches and their crews aren’t supporting the Kurds, they’ll be openly supporting Iran-backed fighters.

Ok, fine.

Only that isn’t at all consistent with placing US ground troops with Syria’s “moderate rebels” like the Free Syrian Army because after all, they’re fighting the very same Iran-backed Shiite militias. So the US would be bolstering the militiamen in Iraq with Apache gunship support and then firing on those exact same militiamen across the border in Syria in support of the “moderate” rebels battling to oust the Assad regime.

It’s beyond absurd.

And then of course there’s the whole Kurd/Turkey problem. The US is, i) fighting alongside the Peshmerga in Iraq and intends to support them going forward with Apache helicopters, ii) paradropping guns and ammo to the YPG in Syria (as part of a ridiculous ruse that involves the largely made-up SAC mentioned above by WSJ), and now iii) may even send in ground troops to fight with the YPG. But Turkey just bombed the YPG yesterday. Additionally, the US is flying sorties from Incirlik which sets up the insanely ridiculous possibility that if the US embeds troops with the Syrian Kurds, US jets could be taking off from the same base as Turkish warplanes only the US warplanes would be supporting the YPG while Turkish warplanes bomb them.

So, yeah. This is should all go swimmingly.

Finally, there’s the possibility that if the US puts boots on the ground in Syria in support of the “moderate” rebels, those troops will be killed by Russia and Iran (which Dunford said on Tuesday likely has "more than 1,000 [soldiers] on the ground in Iraq [and] something less than 2,000 in Syria"), and with that, we close with several comments from Chairman of the Russian Upper House committee for foreign affairs, Konstantin Kosachev (via RT) and a few images:

Commenting on the potential involvement of US ground troops against ISIS in Iraq and Syria, Kosachev once again highlighted that, when it comes to Syria, the US-led anti-ISIS campaign is already violating international law. Potential troops on the ground, Kosachev believes, will further violate international regulations

“Any operations – air based operations, ground based operations – in Syria by American forces will be illegal,”Kosachev told RT, explaining that Washington has not been invited by Damascus to take part in military operation in a sovereign country.

“They will get trapped, they will get involved in this ongoing conflict and the consequences will be absolutely unpredictable,” Kosachev said, addicting that sending US troops into Syria would be a “big mistake.”

At the same time, Kosachev, stressed that Russia would not send ground troops into Syria.

“No ground operation is possible [in Syria], because that would inevitably involve Russia in the ongoing war,” the politician told RT.

Just remind me one more time without checking with CNBC, why the US has been blowing up the Middle East for the last few years?  I'm having trouble remembering where the US was attacked by the official armed forces of those countries.  Was it Atlantic City?  Maybe Lebanon's battleships hit Los Angeles?  C'mon, a little help here.  Don't give me that terrorist shit, because if a dozen US "militia" terrorists hit Iraq, their military wouldn't be bombing Atlanta Georgia over that, would they?

This is what I posted yesterday regarding a similar article on ZH:

What I see coming is the US embedding troops with the "opposition" (i.e. ISIS/ISIL) fighters and then covertly telling the Russians and Syrians that the troops are there.  Therefore if Russian planes bomb those targets they will be attacking American forces.

This would be right in line with the kind of of duplicitous crap the US has pulled before.  The only problem I see with this scenario is how the US justifies putting their troops in the same area as the supposed enemy - I'm sure their ministry of propaganda will figure something out though.

All while tossing chum to the Fox News crowd about how over a billion Muslims were all batshit crazy, unlike the peace-loving, Torah following Israelis or sporadically "Christian" {or at least theist} Americans - both of whom have murdered more innocent people than has radical Islam.

because the US doesn't recognize the Assad regime, they don't have to ask permission to bomb Syria assets or to arm and support any group fighting the Assad regime.

it also explains why the US only pretended to attack ISIS, a group which the US had organized to join them in bringing down the Syrian regime.

then Putin showed the world how to seriously attack ISIS

The US economy is continuing to deteriorate- See: David Stockman’s  Contra Corner (link: davidstockmanscontracorner.com) for an excellent overview of current economic conditions in the US and worldwide. In response to our structural economic problems, US foreign policy has become increasingly bellicose and reckless. The US/NATO war theater extends from the Levant, to Caspian Basin, Persian Gulf, China Sea, Indian Ocean, Horn of Africa, the Maghreb, to Eastern Europe and Russian Border. Not only is this policy astronomically expensive for US taxpayers, it is extremely dangerous as it has created failed states in Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Yemen (Syria?) and led to the creation of ISIS/ISIL/Daesh. It appears that the US is upping the ante further, by i) openly threatening China by conducting naval naval incursions into waters near islands in the South China Sea claimed by China, and ii) conducting new military actions on Syrian territory, a clear violation of international law. Any war with China will likely be a war with Russia as well. Who knows, maybe this will be an excuse for the stock market to go up some more.

The anglo-saxon zionist imperialist regime will assuredly lose. The military industrial complex is nothing more than another form of welfare for the military corporations. Russian military weaponry has proven itself vastly superior, and their strategical tactics are leaps and bounds more advanced than anything the US can ever think up. Russian electronic warfare will completely nullify all zionist circuitry, and the zionists would rack up death counts before anything was ever spotted. Of course, the zionist media would claim the opposite while its population dwindles down to nothing but mexicans, philippinoes, and blacks.

And as for china, they need do nothing but send their hypersonic weaponry at the bloated, oversized US navy, and watch the deatch count climb. For a good kick in the nuts, lob a few at Japan and wipe out tokyo. The dollar-yen carry trade will go down the toilet. The fed will have no recourse but to change its language to trillions and say everything is good as the american popululation wonders why walmart goes empty because no one can afford their 100 dollar keurigs.

Finally, for good measure, iran takes over saudi arabia, destroys its desalinization plants, and changesthe current princes' hobby from riding bmw suv's on two wheels to watching the world spin around and around for 4 minutes (the time the brain can live without oxygen). There goes the petro-dollar.

The fed now has to further change its vocabulary to quadrillions. the US government claims bankrupty, changes the federal reserves name to something magical like sparkly sparkly rainbow, and bring in a US reserve, and the show goes on like a bad furniture store that never goes away.

All I know is if Russian missiles start coming down here in the US and our lives are ruined, then the idiots who decided it was "ok" to engage Russia in a war should be taken out and summarily executed.  That goes for the politicians, generals and media lackey's who thought it was ok.  You are genocidal maniacs.  We will not endure the consequences of your death machine when the Russians call you out.  We dont want a war with Russia or China we want peace and stability and we want to trade with them.  If you cant abide by the US Constitution and our founding principles then you should be arrested as traitors and sent to the gallows.  The Russian and Chinese people are not our enemies and they have shown nothing but restraint despite your repeated efforts to engage them.  You have exploited our military and used our soldiers as fodder to further dreams of empire that is clearly collapsing.  You have looted the treasury to fund and empire that is bankrupt.  You are corrupt, rotted and we will not abide meddling that can result in a catastrophe for our country.

Sadly, there are multi-millions of Americans that get their news from CNN or Faux who will be relieved and comforted that the US is doing something about whatever situation is presented to them. To them 8 Apaches will seem totally adequate as well as totally neccessary to bring the current situation to closure. In other news Halloween decor is 50% off at the dollar store, the World Series has begun, Thanksgiving is coming up sooner than you can think and Costco has Christmas items now in stock. I could suggest stocking up on ammo, food, heating supplies, medical etc. but that would make me a prepper which doesn't get much play in the general public either so other than checking ZH and comments I will remain in a wait/see holding pattern. If the US puts troops in with two groups in Syria, they will end up shooting at each other.  ANY two groups, really doesn't matter.  Or any three groups, or any six groups.

The time to act of course was before Russia showed up, we could have put 100,000 troops in there, cleaned it up in 90 days, then had a party.  This isn't Iraq - but frankly Iraq shouldn't have gone on much longer than 90 days either, once the ball dropped.  Anyway, now that Russia *is* there, we should negotiate a deal with them, partition the country, and kill anyone who disagrees.  Easy-peasy.  Unfortunately we won't do that.

There's some interesting stories over on Sputnik news, not least Germany trying to mend bridges with Russia. But as said above:

Baghdad has not asked and does not need the United States to conduct ground operations against Islamic State in Iraq, Prime Minister Haider Abadi's spokesman said Wednesday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — On Tuesday, US Defense Secretary Ashton Carter said that the Pentagon had not ruled out conducting ground attacks against ISIL.

"This is an Iraqi affair and the government did not ask the U.S. Department of Defense to be involved in direct operations," Saad Hadithi told NBC News, adding that Baghdad had "enough soldiers on the ground."

Hadithi said the United States is required to coordinate through Baghdad any military activity in the country, including the airstrikes that an international US-led coalition is currently conducting against ISIL targets on Iraqi soil.

Boots on the Ground, But Details Still Unclear: Pentagon to Launch 'Direct Action' in Syria and Iraq

The spokesman, however, admitted that US assistance was important to Iraq to arm and train its forces.

Some 3,300 US troops are currently deployed in Iraq to train local forces and protect US facilities, according to NBC News.

US forces and Kurdish militia last week carried out an anti-ISIL operation in northern Iraq. The United States did not inform the Iraqi government of its actions in advance.

All of this makes sense if you back up and look at what as been going recently.

The US appears to be trying as hard as possible to provoke Russia into a shooting war.  They may succeed.

I'm sure the US believes that once our mighty heroes show up on the battlefield, the Russians will drop to the knees and begin crying like little girls.  The reason for this is that idiots like barry and the Songbird of Hanoi don't know anything about Russian history or the character of the Russian people, and they don't believe the Russians can stand up to amerika's invincible imperial armies.  A more important reason is that the US is run by psychopaths and retards.

The war, after "accidental" attacks on Russians and Syrian government forces, may likely expand rapidly and go nuclear within a short time window.  I'm good with that.

There will never be a chance for peace as long as the US exists.  Fortunately, Putin and Xi have the means to rid the world of the amerkan desease.

Among other proposals, U.S. officials said some in the military recommend openly deploying a small number of forces on the ground in Syria, embedded among moderate rebels or Kurdish forces there, for the first time.

If American forces are imbedded with moderate rebels (how can an armed rebel be moderate?) won't the US army have to inform the Russians of the exact location of the rebels and the embedded US forces to prevent them from being killed by Russian air attacks?

If these moderate rebels were to call themselves the Sisters of Poor Clare, would the NYT and WSJ refer to them as such?

Ha ha ha - the Ruskies already have their first coffin coming back from Syria - first of MANY. Of course you'll never hear about that here on Putin Butt-slave Central. Here's what Bloomberg says:

There is a powerful reason President Vladimir Putin won't win Bashar al-Assad's war for him. As with Russia's limited military participation in the conflict in eastern Ukraine, Putin doesn't want casualties, because not even his powerful propaganda machine can conceal them.

On Tuesday, Russia acknowledged its first military casualty in Syria: Vadim Kostenko, a 19-year-old air force technician. The Defense Ministry, which flatly denied all previous reports of casualties, didn't volunteer the information. Instead, the Conflict Intelligence Team, a volunteer group run by the blogger Ruslan Leviev that scours social networks to track Russian military activity, discovered that Kostenko died Oct. 24.

Leviev's team used the same approach it has to track the Russian army's presence in Ukraine and the death toll there: It combed the social network for accounts of soldiers from units believed or reported to be involved in the action, and those of their friends. After discovering an epitaph for Kostenko, the team contacted his relatives and friends to confirm the death and discovered that a representative of Kostenko's unit had told his family that he had killed himself.

The Defense Ministry said Tuesday that data on Kostenko's  mobile phone suggested he had a falling out with his girlfriend. Kostenko's parents and sister didn't believe it, though. They said he had been cheerful when he talked to them on the day he died and that he and his girlfriend had been doing great and been planning to get married.

The Defense Ministry's initial silence and the shaky suicide narrative indicate that Russian military officials are reluctant to recognize any deaths.

I have a suggestion.

Why don't we ask our dumbass vassals in Europe to supply the ground troops?  Helping the US rampage around the mideast has worked out so well for the Europeans so far, I'm sure they would love to have their young people die fighting in the ME so they can get even more guests to settle in their country and never leave.

Think of how their GDP will grow.  For example, think of the boom in the European construction industry ... because they will be building all those new mosques.

In a perverse way, this may ultimately be good for peace.  As Europe is converted into a population of arabic speaking middle eastern folk, it will be a lot harder for the US to put together a "coalition of the willing" (i.e, a coalition of the willingly bought and paid for European politicians).

Russia's Reserve Fund could run empty in 2016

Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov prompted more concerns over the health of the Russian economy Tuesday when he said there was a danger that the country's vast Reserve Fund could be entirely exhausted in 2016 if oil prices stay at their current level.

He told members of the upper house of parliament that if oil prices stayed around the current level of just below $50 a barrel and the dollar exchange rate remained unchanged, the budget may fail to receive 900 billion rubles ($14.14 billion) in revenues, Russian news agency TASS reported Tuesday.

"Our reserves volume [in 2015] will decrease by approximately 2.6 trillion rubles ($40.85 billion) - more than half," Siluanov said, according to TASS.

"This means that 2016 is the last year when we are able to spend our reserves that way. After that we will not have such resources," he warned.

"If the current oil prices and exchange rates remain the same, and the current oil price is at around $44 per barrels for Urals, and the ruble exchange rate is about 62 rubles to the dollar, we can (see the budget) fall 900 billion rubles short. We really face such risks," the minister said.

Thank god you're here to bash Russia and Putin regardless of the article topic.

Because if you didn't do so, I don't know WHERE I'd go to find anti-Putin assessments.

Thank you - you provide a wonderful service, and I presume that being banned again shortly will not dissuade you from your Quixotic quest to distribute "the truth" to people who would otherwise never hear it.
