US Ground Troops In Syria Is "Illegal, Big Mistake", Russia Warns Obama Of "Unpredictable Consequences"

Tyler Durden's picture

On Tuesday, Defense Secretary Ash Carter told the Senate Armed Services Committee that the US would no longer hesitate to engage in “direct action on the ground” in Iraq and Syria.

The change in rhetoric (and apparent shift in strategy) comes just days after the US seemingly prepared the public for what might be coming by releasing helmet cam footage of what Washington says was a raid on an ISIS prison by Delta Force (accompanied by the Peshmerga). 70 prisoners were allegedly freed although not before the US suffered its first combat death in Iraq since 2011.

The timing of the video is suspect, to say the least. It came just days after Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Joe Dunford visited Iraqi PM Haider al-Abadi in an effort to dissuade Baghdad from requesting Russian airstrikes on ISIS targets. In short, it appears as though Washington is trying to simultaneously, i) prove to Mid-East governments that the US can still be effective in the fight against terrorism even as questions remain about ulterior motives and even as Russia racks up gains in Syria, and ii) prepare the public for the possibility that America is about to put boots on the ground in Iraq and Syria. Here’s more from WSJ on Washington’s new “strategy”:

The White House is seriously considering deploying a small squadron of Apache attack helicopters to Iraq as part of a package of new assistance programs to counter Islamic State, according to U.S. officials.

The move could ultimately require the deployment of hundreds more U.S. service members to Iraq. Among other proposals, U.S. officials said some in the military recommend openly deploying a small number of forces on the ground in Syria, embedded among moderate rebels or Kurdish forces there, for the first time.

Pressure is mounting on the regime to change course. Recent Russian intervention in Syria on the side of the regime, and the threat of Moscow intervening in Iraq next, has spurred the U.S. to step up its role, defense officials acknowledge.

Pentagon officials have recommended to the White House that the U.S. deploy as many as eight Apache helicopters and their crews to Iraq. The helicopters, known for their targeting prowess, could work in conjunction with as many as two dozen ground spotters who would embed with local ground forces to call in strikes against Islamic State targets.

Another proposal, which is less likely, would insert small numbers of combat advisers on the front lines with Iraqi forces and possibly with moderate rebels inside Syria. Pentagon officials are also likely to enhance Iraqi intelligence capabilities, possibly through a group on the ground that would serve as a single point of coordination between the U.S. and Iraq, a senior military official said.

Last week, the defense chief said Americans should expect more raids like the joint U.S.-Kurdish operation that took place in the town of Hawija, Iraq, in which 70 prisoners were freed and an American was killed in action, the first since 2011. The U.S. also recently dropped 50 tons of ammunition to an umbrella group of moderate rebel forces inside Syria now known as the Syria-Arab Coalition, or SAC, as part of a renewed effort to strengthen local forces.

Pentagon and White House officials indicated the deployment of Apache helicopters was being given the most serious consideration, and therefore the most likely step.

U.S. officials say momentum is building within the administration to ramp up those efforts even more, capitalizing on the strength of Kurdish and other Iraqi forces.

“I believe we will have an opportunity to reinforce Iraqi success in the days ahead,” Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Joe Dunford told Senate lawmakers at a hearing on Tuesday.

Alright, so let’s see if we can untangle this. Washington intends to send in the Apaches to bolster Iraqi forces both Peshmerga and otherwise. Or at least that’s what it sounds like. The Pentagon is also considering the placement of American ground troops with “moderate” rebels and with the YPG in Syria.

As we’ve detailed extensively (and this isn’t exactly a secret), Iran effectively runs the Iraqi military via its various Shiite militia proxy armies. That’s not an exaggeration. As Reuters reported earlier this month, “the Fifth Iraqi Army Division now reports to the militias’ chain of command, not to the military’s, according to several U.S. and coalition military officials.” So when the Apaches and their crews aren’t supporting the Kurds, they’ll be openly supporting Iran-backed fighters.

Ok, fine.

Only that isn’t at all consistent with placing US ground troops with Syria’s “moderate rebels” like the Free Syrian Army because after all, they’re fighting the very same Iran-backed Shiite militias. So the US would be bolstering the militiamen in Iraq with Apache gunship support and then firing on those exact same militiamen across the border in Syria in support of the “moderate” rebels battling to oust the Assad regime.

It’s beyond absurd.

And then of course there’s the whole Kurd/Turkey problem. The US is, i) fighting alongside the Peshmerga in Iraq and intends to support them going forward with Apache helicopters, ii) paradropping guns and ammo to the YPG in Syria (as part of a ridiculous ruse that involves the largely made-up SAC mentioned above by WSJ), and now iii) may even send in ground troops to fight with the YPG. But Turkey just bombed the YPG yesterday. Additionally, the US is flying sorties from Incirlik which sets up the insanely ridiculous possibility that if the US embeds troops with the Syrian Kurds, US jets could be taking off from the same base as Turkish warplanes only the US warplanes would be supporting the YPG while Turkish warplanes bomb them.

So, yeah. This is should all go swimmingly.

Finally, there’s the possibility that if the US puts boots on the ground in Syria in support of the “moderate” rebels, those troops will be killed by Russia and Iran (which Dunford said on Tuesday likely has "more than 1,000 [soldiers] on the ground in Iraq [and] something less than 2,000 in Syria"), and with that, we close with several comments from Chairman of the Russian Upper House committee for foreign affairs, Konstantin Kosachev (via RT) and a few images:

Commenting on the potential involvement of US ground troops against ISIS in Iraq and Syria, Kosachev once again highlighted that, when it comes to Syria, the US-led anti-ISIS campaign is already violating international law. Potential troops on the ground, Kosachev believes, will further violate international regulations

“Any operations – air based operations, ground based operations – in Syria by American forces will be illegal,”Kosachev told RT, explaining that Washington has not been invited by Damascus to take part in military operation in a sovereign country.

“They will get trapped, they will get involved in this ongoing conflict and the consequences will be absolutely unpredictable,” Kosachev said, addicting that sending US troops into Syria would be a “big mistake.”

At the same time, Kosachev, stressed that Russia would not send ground troops into Syria.

“No ground operation is possible [in Syria], because that would inevitably involve Russia in the ongoing war,” the politician told RT.

I have read a great deal on the topic of Syria and have come to the conclusion that it is impossible to know what is going on the ground, or behind the scenes.

consequently, I am suspicious about anybody who seems certain of anything, whether based on "US officials," or some absurd source like AP.

Agreed. And lets add RT, veteranstoday.com, prisonplanet.com, beforeitsnews.com and pretty much anything coming out of Russia. That said, RT does runs an occasional good story.

http://www.express.co.uk/news/world/613057/Russia-takes-out-49-ISIS-targ...

"Russia’s bombing continued Thursday, resulting, according to Reuters, in “what appeared to be Russia’s first strikes on a known Islamic State-held target,” an airbase in the group’s de facto capital of Raqqa. But elsewhere, according to The New York Times, Thursday’s airstrikes also “appeared to target the Army of Conquest, a coalition of insurgent groups that includes the Nusra Front, the hard-line Islamist group Ahrar al-Sham, and a range of less extreme Islamist groups—all of which are opposed to the Islamic State.”"

Note the heavy reliance on the "Institute for the Study of War"

who'd thought American servicemen-women would enjoy working with and babysitting Al Qaeda- cast as the moderate rebels. Tell me if I'm wrong but wasn't Al Qaeda blamed for the attack on 9/11/2001 according to offical reports? Didn't Al Qaeda attack the Pentagon on 9/11/2001 but now the Pentagon in its war on terror wants and is supporting those very same sworn enemy terrorists?  "Someones got some splainin' to do"... Russia has given warning that it bombs the terrorist where ever they are and makes no distinction between terrorists groups. America would do well to heed this warning as the Russians have legal rights for their operations in Syria where as the Americans will be in an illegal position should they send uninvited ground forces into Syria. Maybe instead the US will get the Brits and Canada to send their special forces to help Al Qaeda instead of American troops?

I've often wondered if the average non-com realizes the idiocy behind their missions. Are they so brainwashed by the educational system and their military training that they are incapable of independent thought. What about the commissioned officers? They are "better educated" and supposedly of higher intelligence. Haven't they figured out yet that they are being used by the MIC to fight both sides of the supposed war on terror? Seems to me that if enough of them figured it out, they could put a stop to this nonsense overnight. After all, there are a lot more of them (Lt's, captains, majors, colonels), than there are Generals. Or, do they all have their eye on the ball of making no waves to retire with the highest rank and pension?

It's not every day you'll catch me admitting to be a "dull witted, dumb fuck', but if "the dunce cap fits ..."

I, along with a few others here, have predicted the coming of some enormous "false flag" from the Oval Office, Pentagon, and CIA.

While a lot of us have danced around the existence of ISIS and called them an arm of the US in toppling Assad, thanks to Putin, we now see THAT ISIS HAS BEEN THAT 'FALSE FLAG' SINCE DAY ONE.

Not a "false flag" as when the Swedish King's tailor made up Russian uniforms and the Swedes attacked their own positions for a casus belli against Moscow.  Or recently when they observed a Russian submarine in the cesspools around Stockholm. (The Swedes are a cunty people and are ruled by thousands of cunts in their government.  Ask Assange.)

No, in this "false flag" the other side are terrorists and terrorism.  While the rank and file ISIS is a destructive nut job, the leaders of ISIS are bought and paid for CIA operatives.

And ISIS is a twofer.  It helps remove Assad from office AND it scares the bejesus out of Americans and Europeans.  Scares them so much they are willing to slip the manacles of totalitarianism around their ankles.

I first suspected some thing was up when I read a opinion, perhaps in the NYT, that ISIS was a very sophisticated name for a band of sand pirates. Two days later the MSM started referring to ISIS as ISIL.

Hello?

Cut to the chase.

Putin starts Russia's air campaign against Assad's enemies, both ISIS and the FSA.  The CIA had guaranteed the safety their agents during the coalition's Mickey Mouse attacks, and became worried that some of these leaders would defect or fall into Syrian or Iranian hands and spill the beans about their relationship with Washington, suddenly the US went to work either killing their ISIS agents or clearing a road for them to Iraq or Jordan.

Who knows what Obama's real motive was in the recent prison raid?

No matter what, Putin hasn't missed a beat.  And the videos of beheadings, drowning and burnings all stop like the buck on the Negro's desk

Want to know a crazy "false flag" scenario that happens to be real? Well the FF isn't real, but the guy promoting the story is real.

Edward Snowden was promoting a story, whereby the US was going to creat a false alien attack on the world so that Obama and the US could try and take over during the "alien attack"

I shit you not. This is real. Snowden really came up with that story.

PRISM Mining UFO Data, Targets False Flag ET Invasion as Pretext to Space Wars

TEHRAN (FNA)- New analysis of Edward Snowden’s June 9, 2013, interview with the U.K. Guardian newspaper reveals how the self-described NSA surveillance program whistleblower harbors unconscious concerns about PRISM being used to mine online UFO and ET contact-related data as part of an ongoing attempt by the U.S. government to implement tyrannical space wars initiatives.

A report published to alleged PRISM-sponsor YouTube claims that when Edward Snowden (a self-described former senior advisor for the Central Intelligence Agency) cites the emergence of “new and unpredicted threats” as a precedent for the assertion of claims by government to unconstitutional powers, the former telecommunications information systems officer is unconsciously referencing a false flag ET invasion scenario.

Click here to watch “Edward Snowden’s Secret NSA Surveillance UFO Message” on YouTube’s SecretMessageTV: “The secret that Edward Snowden dared not tell in his confessional video interview to the UK Guardian relates how the formerly top secret PRISM surveillance program is being used to mine online UFO and ET contact-related data in an attempt to build a false flag ET invasion case as a pretext to space wars and their understandably disastrous consequences.“

Edward Snowden: “The only thing that restricts the activities of the surveillance state are policy. Even our agreements with other sovereign governments; we consider that to be a stipulation of policy rather than a stipulation of law. And because of that, a new leader will be elected, they’ll flip the switch, say that “Because of the crisis, because of the dangers that we face in the world”, you know, some new and unpredicted threat [emphasis added], “We need more authority, we need more power.” And there will be nothing the people can do at that point to oppose it. And it will be turn-key tyranny.”

Secret Message: “Those UFOs.”

Betamax, I had no idea that part of your Bar Mitzvah (13th birthday) ritual, was making up chazerai to post on ZH as a demonstration of your 'coming of age.'

“If you look at encrypted communication, if they are properly encrypted, there is no real way to tell that they are encrypted,” Snowden said. “You can’t distinguish a properly encrypted communication from random behaviour.”

“So if you have an an alien civilization trying to listen for other civilizations,” he said, “or our civilization trying to listen for aliens, there’s only one small period in the development of their society when all their communication will be sent via the most primitive and most unprotected means.”

After that, Snowden said, alien messages would be so encrypted that it would render them unrecognisable, “indistinguishable to us from cosmic microwave background radiation”. In that case, humanity would not even realise it had received such communications.

Snowden is talking about the unintended consequences of ENCRYPTION.  Not about aliens dancing under your sheets and touching your little fellow.

If you think that I, or anyone else here, will fall for "those UFOs" spliced onto the end of Snowden's remarks, perhaps you're lying about your age and really are only 8 yars old.

So on top of all your duncery, apparently you can't read. Extra bonus for grabbing his comments elsewhere about encryption and then tryng to weave/distort them into the narrative here. Bonus points would have been awarded if you had not done such a shitty job. Sorry. Try again.

Edward Snowden. And I quote.

“But, the real one that he was always holding off on and would say again with tears filling his eyes every time he said this to me repeatedly was that the last card they are holding is the 'alien card,' the extraterrestrial card and none of them are hostile [emphasis added]. 'None of them are hostile. It's all a lie.'

"If you think that I, or anyone else here, will fall for "those UFOs" spliced onto the end of Snowden's remarks, perhaps you're lying about your age and really are only 8 yars old."

I see. Just another news outlet trying to bring Putin down. Fars News Agency out of Tehran (which is a big supporter of Assad and Putin) has now turned into a vile MSM device to attack glorious Putin cough cough...

The FACT of the matter, its widely known that Snowden was peddling this shit. In FACT, it was the first time anybody started questioning his dossier documents as they were released because it sounded like bullshit -- which in FACT turned out to be the case.

Sorry if all these FACTS hurt your feelings.

That quote is from an interview with Dr. Carol Rosin, and the "he" that Dr. Rosin is talking about is Dr. Wernher von Braun. I suggest you reread that Farsnews article. Try doing it slowly and with comprehension.

Or, as you like to say: Sorry. Try again.

Jesus recognized just how "corrupt and morally bankrupt" the Jewish establishment was and He told them their house was left to them desolate and in AD 70 the Romans utterly destroyed their nation.  Now none of them know which tribe they belong to because all their records were destroyed, but at some point in the future 2/3rds of them will die and the other 1/3 will come to a saving knowledge of Jesus as the messiah.  Of course Jesus is just a good person; nothing more.

I don't get it.  If Jesus said their house would be left desolate and it was, then what's this stuff about 2/3 and 1/3?  What part of desolate don't people get?

Those that wish to perpetuate a dead system today are converts to a dead system.  It was killed on Calvary and was solely used by God to create guilt.  Look at that wailing wall, it's evidence as to the highest and greatest attribute it can produce, guilt.  And almost as proof to His continued curse, their modern day archenemy sits above it like a cherry on top.

Theirs is not my fight.  Geography cannot prevent worship of the Christ.

Iraq to Washington: We Don't Want Your Troops

What a difference a day makes. Just 24 hours ago US Defense Secretary Ashton Carter was telling the Senate Armed Services Committee all about the Obama Administration's new military strategy for the Middle East. The headline grabber from his testimony was the revelation that the US military would begin "direct action on the ground" in Iraq and Syria.

"We won’t hold back from supporting capable partners in opportunistic attacks against ISIL (ISIS)," he told the Committee. The new strategy would consist of "three R's," he said: more US action, including on the ground, with Syrian opposition partners to take the ISIS stronghold in Raqqa, Syria; more intense cooperation with the Iraqi army including with US-embedded soldiers to retake Ramadi from ISIS in Iraq; and the beginning of US military raids, "whether by strikes from the air or direct action on the ground.”

That was news to the Iraqis, it turns out. And it wasn't very good news at that. Today Sa'ad al-Hadithi, spokesman for Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi, said "thanks but no thanks" to a third US invasion of his country. "We have enough soldiers on the ground," he said.

This raises the question of whether the US administration intends to insert US soldiers into Iraq against the wishes of its elected government, as it has done and promises to continue to do in Syria. In that case, the US would be shooting at ISIS and the Iraqi government, as well as the Iran-backed Shi'ite militias who are coming to increasingly control large parts of the Iraqi military. Presumably all these forces would be shooting back at US troops on the ground as well. The US would likely be partnering in this task with the anti-ISIS Sunni fighters highlighted in Defense Secretary Carter's testimony yesterday. In other words, the US would be backing forces closer to those of Saddam Hussein, who they overthrew twelve years ago.

The Iraqi government had requested Russian assistance against ISIS earlier this month, after Russian strikes in Syria appear to have made a significant impact on the battlefield. But Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff Marine Gen. Joseph Dunford told the Iraqis if they accept Russian assistance they can forget about any more US aid.

It appears the US threat was not enough to put the Iraqis off asking for Russian help, as earlier this week the Iraqi parliament approved Russian airstrikes against ISIS in Iraq.

So the big roll-out of the new US Middle East military strategy seems to have fizzled, as none of the intended beneficiaries of US assistance seem all that enthused about the partnership. For the moment, the US finds itself backing Iranian militias in Iraq while fighting them next door in Syria, while planning to place US troops in with "moderate" anti-Assad rebels in the path of falling Russian bombs. All the while, of course, the US is aiding the Kurds in Syria and Iraq which are currently being bombed by NATO ally Turkey.

What else could possibly go wrong?

Putin to team up with the TALIBAN to wipe out Islamic State – and give them WEAPONS

VLADIMIR Putin’s attack on Islamic State took a menacing turn today after it was claimed Russia was to team up with the TALIBAN to wipe out the evil jihadis.

The Russian supremo wants to enlist the support of Afghan warlords once loyal to Osama Bin Laden to help him obliterate the jihadi hate group.

In return Mr Putin would supply the fundamentalist group with heavy weapons and vow to support it internationally should it retake control of the country from the unstable Afghan government.

Sources suggest the talks have been going on for two years and were instigated by Russia, which has recently upped the dialogue as it looks to bring Taliban fighters on its side.

It is understood high-ranking officials from Moscow have been secretly meeting Taliban leaders in the former Soviet state of Tajikistan. Intelligence operatives said the discussions, which began in 2013 and involve the smuggling of significant arms shipments to the Taliban,

Jews are selling Christmas trees in October?  Seriously?  Just Jews are selling trees?  What a terribly small mind you have, Atomizer.  In fact, if your brain was a BB it could roll down the edge of razor blade like it was driving down a 4-lane highway.

Have you ever thought that stores such as Walmart, Lowe's, Home Depot, et al wouldn't be shoving Christmas crap down our throats in September IF PEOPLE WEREN'T BUYING THEM? Retailers aren't going to dedicate that much floor space to Christmas items if those goods aren't being purchased.

Don't blame the Jews.  Blame the idiot consumers who are buying this trash.  But, I suppose that all of the idiots buying this crap must be Jews, too, eh?  Yeah, I'm sure Jews are flocking to stores to buy goods based on a non-Jewish holiday.  Please.

I had no idea there were that many Jews in the world.

Have a nice day, Adolf.

Actually, in the long end of this short run is, there will only be two flags to hold up the rites of. One will simply be a cross on a blank field. The other will be the satanic upside down star. One the Christ principle, the other of the chaotic murderous satanic evil one. There can only be, One. Pick well that which you put your vital life force energies into, for each carries it's toll to the grave. There is no escape of that which lies on the other side. Choose well, said the old Knight.

Theater of the absurd, continued. The US taxpayer funded $ multi-trillion  US/NATO war theater extends from the Levant to Caspian Basin, Persian Gulf, China Sea (Obama’s Asia pivot; aka war with China/Russia), Indian Ocean, Horn of Africa, the Maghreb, Eastern Europe and Russian border. What has been the “return on their investment” for taxpayers? Thousands of our young people killed and disabled, failed states in Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Yemen (Syria?) and as an added bonus- creation of ISIS/ISIL/Daesh. To refresh our memory- immediately following the US invasion and occupation of Iraq, Bush II disbanded the Iraqi military and not surprisingly, many of these (now unemployed) Iraqi military “vets” joined ISIS. Bottom line- if you were writing a military novel, could you have developed a more sinister plot? Actions (read foreign policy decisions) do indeed have consequences.

The USA has BILLIONS invested in ISIL, they gotta get between ISIL and the russians/iranians 'cause otherwise ISIL will be wiped out and its back to square zero for the gulf gas project. Bilderberg is breathing down the pentagon's neck on this one. The russians/iranians would never dare attack sacred good-guy americans, right? Also don't forget all the juicy evidence the russians/iranians will be vacuuming up and parading in front of the world showing just how much the ISIL terrorists are a Langley project, right down to the DOD contract for white Nike air jordans.....

America is just desperate to get some technical teams into Syria, to see if they can figure out how the Russian Coms and radar jaming system works, and how to defeat it. Because so long as the Russian electronic countermeasures system can defeat US military electronics, the USA is totally screwed in any actual combatwith Russian forces. And both sides know it.

For this purpose the US military command will consider loss of their teams secondary. So long as they return some data.

Throughout all of history the ONLY thing the Russian military has proved over time is that their men are terribly brave.  Not very smart, but certainly brave.  Moscow doesn't hesitate to send its men into battle to die in staggering numbers.  What did they lose in WWII? 9-10 million men? How many men did the U.S. lose? 407,000.

Russians fight.  And they die. Quickly and en masse.  I fear them not.

Ever since this whole ISIS thing kicked off, the local Iraqi people - the real people in Baghdad and Basra - have been convinced the US and Israel is behind ISIS. Pretty much everyone in Iraq is convinced the US is resupplying ISIS and now that TOW missiles are showing up in their hands this is pretty much irreputable.

The Iraqi people have less than ZERO faith in the US Military. In fact, what you will see happen now is that the Iraqis will start pressing back against the US Military. The tribes are much more interested in helping the Russians and the Iranians. The Iraqi Tribal leaders know the US will sell them out like a whore  if they have to. No one - and I mean no one - in Iraq respects the American Sheikh Barrack Hussein Obama.

KRG is an entirely different kettle of fish, however. Up in KRG the US Troops can operate fairly safely and independently with the Pesmerga - course this puts the US at odds with Turkey but I guess that's what political borders are for (sarcasm).

Now you understand how the pro SOVIET media works, When a Ruskie does it no problem there is geopolitical reasons. When another nation does, they be Wrong, bad, dumb and silly.

MI6 and CIA were using the Muslim Brotherhood in the 1950s. Al Qaeda was created by Brzezinski using Saudi funding and ISI in Pakistan BEFORE the USSR invaded to prop up the Kabul regime which was doing such terrible things as educating women and abolishing feudalism. The US and Saudi Arabia backed the feudalism and backed the Pashtuns trying to destroy the Kabul Government.  If you have difficulty grasping it watch: Charlie Wilson's War

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0472062/

The Russians were involved in Afghanistan from 1919 onwards and had only been stopped in previous centuries by the British Empire fighting on the NW frontier. It was Washington that created Taliban as a Pashtun group aiming to destroy Pakistan and Afghanistan.

The problem with that film like so much of Hollywood's propaganda is that it reinforces the notion of the US empire essentially being a force for good. It's only when that empire "makes honest mistakes" that things go wrong. In the case of Charlie Wilsons War, the film emphasises that not following up with funding a rebuilding program is what lead to the civil war/Taliban. It never examines the good things being done by the pre-war Afghan govt to advance the country. It never examines why the Russians went in. It never shows that the best weapons went to Bin Laden & his Jihadists. It never shows that the US was perfectly happy to work with the Taliban later on so long as they followed orders. It was an entertaining film in its own right but it deliberately omits so much important historical information in order to distort and ultimately deceive a gullible population.

Huffington post so corrupt, refuse to even mention Trump on their pages even though he appears to done as good as anybody, and they instead put up pictures and stories about those who didn't do well.

I guess they worked out the more they criticised and made fun of Trump the more determined the public were to back him, so now they go for the other tactic, make out he isn't there.

They really want to protect Clinton from any popular opposition to the extent of becoming the ClintontonPost.

I am so confused. Without an identifiable enemy, clearly defined objectives and a crisp vision of victory, this cannot possibly be a job for the military. Is there no one in the uniformed services who has the balls to say so?

Terror and terrorism cannot be an enemy -- it is a tactic an enemy might use to attempt to achieve some objective. One cannot fight a war against a tactic. If it were possible we could declare a war on lies, cheating, theft and all kinds of misdeeds. How about a war on wickedness or drugs?

I am unclear on what possible strategic interest could the US have in the war-torn Middle Eastern small (barely larger than Hungary) country? OK, Bashar al-Assad is not the kind of guy you'd invite over for dinner but neither was Idi Amin Dada, Papa Doc Duvailer and a whole host of other miscreants who murdered tens of thousands of their countrymen while the US either did nothing or supported them. It moggles the bind.

As many as 8 whole helicopters?  Wow, how in the world will ISIS ever deal with 8 helo's?  What a commanding, overwhelming show of force that is going to be!  Considering how Syria has a land mass of about 71,500 square miles, that means each bird might have to cover almost 9,000 square miles.  Ok, let's be real, most of the fighting is being done in about 25% of the country, so that whittles down each Apache's coverage area to around 2,200 square miles.  Just imagine how much damage a single Apache could do patrolling an area the size of Delware all by itself.  Putin must be chain smoking Pall Mall's right now out of fear.

It's a good thing ISIS is merely the Junior Varsity team, or Owebama might have to send in 20.
