I don't think Russia could ever have a female defense minister. In Russia, the defense minister actually has to be very tough and respected (by the soldiers), as Russian soldiers are tough and stubborn people. For example the previous defense minister was not good at his job and the military almost revolted! Putin had to sack him and place his good friend (Shoigu) at the position. And Shoigu has proven to be very good and soldiers respect him.

Not that anyone here cares, but just for the record: Karin Enström is not the Swedish Defense Minister. She was, but that was for the previous government, which left office a year ago. Incidentally, she is a professional soldier, a captain in the Amphibious Corps to be precise, but was absolute rubbish as Defense Minister. In contrast, the present Defense Minister, Peter Hultqvist (who is definitely male and looks a bit like the Russian in the middle), used to be a journalist before he became a politician, and in his youth he only did two months of national service before switching to a weapon-free alternative service; but even so, he's the best Defense Minister we've had in a long time (though struggling to make a difference in a government which as a whole is one of the worst and least competent in Swedish history).

It is preferable to have civilian control of the military. Otherwise, we live in a military state. So, the defense minister in a coat and tie or in a skirt is no big deal. That is actually the way it should be.

The defense minister is supposed to be a subject matter expert on military matters whom the prime minister or president can rely on to provide accurate advice and insights to on the ground military realities he has no familiarity with. This is impossible if the defense minister has no experience with military matters.
