Obama Set To Announce US Boots On The Ground In Syria, Russia Threatens Deployment "Unacceptable"

Tyler Durden's picture

When the US media began airing helmet cam footage of Delta Force executing a prison break at an ISIS compound last week we suggested that Washington was making an effort to prepare the American public for more boots on the ground in Iraq and the possibility of ground troops in Syria.

The catalyst: Russia and Iran. Put simply, the US has been embarrassed by Moscow and Tehran’s coordinated effort to rout the Sunni extremists backed by Riyadh, Doha, and Ankara operating in Iraq and Syria and now, as Baghdad and Kabul threaten to turn to The Kremlin for help in the face of American ineptitude, the Pentagon is desperate to show that the US can still be effective at fighting terrorism.

So while John Kerry wanders around (hopefully not on a bike) in Vienna in a futile effort to get Saudi Arabia and Turkey to sit at the same table and talk rationally with Russia and Iran, the US military is contemplating how to insert itself into the battle without sparking a world war.

For its part, Baghdad has informed the Western media that it neither wants nor needs US help fighting ISIS (that’s what all the Iran-backed militias are for) and so instead, The White House may be on the verge of sending spec ops to Syria.

  • OBAMA ADMIN. MAY ANNOUNCE SPECIAL OPS FORCES IN SYRIA:CNBC/RTRS

Here's Reuters:

The United States will send 20 to 30 special operations forces to Syria to serve as military advisers in the fight against Islamic State, a U.S. official said.

The additional U.S. troops will operate in a limited "advise and assist" capacity, without changing President Barack Obama's overall mission to combat the militant group, a separate U.S. official said.

Of course the entire idea of "advise and assist" is a joke in the first place. Here's WaPo:

Depicting the U.S. mission in Iraq became an even more delicate activity last week after a joint raid in the Iraqi city of Hawijah, which freed about 70 Islamic State hostages and left a U.S. Delta Force soldier dead. The death of Master Sgt. Joshua L. Wheeler was the first time a U.S. servicemember had been killed in a firefight there since U.S. troops returned to Iraq last year.

Briefing reporters hours after the raid took place,  Pentagon press secretary Peter Cook said that “U.S. forces are not in a combat role in Iraq.” He said a team of elite U.S. soldiers had provided transport and support for the Iraqi Kurdish commandos. But the Americans were not intending to take part in the raid itself, he said. That changed when a firefight erupted and Wheeler jumped in to help. Later that day, Cook said that Wheeler’s death was the first combat casualty there since 2011.

On Monday, asked about operations in Iraq, White House press secretary Josh Earnest declined to characterize the operations there as combat. He said the “train, advise and assist” mission differed from “the long-term, sustained ground combat operations” that took place after the 2003 invasion. Over 160,000 U.S. troops were stationed in Iraq at the peak of that war.

But on Wednesday, Col. Steve Warren, a U.S. military spokesman in Baghdad, described the mission in blunt terms. “We’re in combat,” he said, speaking via video feed to reporters at the Pentagon. “That’s why we all carry guns.  That’s why we all get combat patches when we leave here. That’s why we all receive imminent danger pay. So, of course it’s combat.”

This comes just hours after Moscow reminded the world that if you haven't received an official invitation from Bashar al-Assad, you are not welcome to come to the party. Here's Reuters, citing Tass:

Russia's deputy foreign minister Sergei Ryabkov said on Friday that no country could use military force in Syria without first securing the agreement of the Syrian government, the TASS news agency reported.

TASS said Ryabkov was responding to a question about the prospect of the United States launching a ground operation in Syria.

"The question of using military force in any form without the agreement of Damascus is for us unacceptable," it quoted him as saying.

Make no mistake, this will be a disaster.

If US spec ops are placed with the YPG, it will run afoul of Washington's coordination with Turkey just two days before an election that revolves around Erdogan's attempt to paint the Kurds as a threat to national security.

If the Pentagon embeds US troops with the Free Syrian Army, well then they'll be engaging Hezbollah and the Quds directly.

Of course no matter where Obama decides to place the troops, they'll be at risk of getting hit by Russian airstrikes and the consequences of that speak for themselves...

I'm so confused. Why do we need boots on the ground in Syria if we're ready to concede to let Assad stay in power? Assad doesn't need our help and doesn't want it, and there's no longer any reason or will to support the other side to oust Assad...

So wtf? Are we literally just coming up with reasons to try out new military toys?

Alfred Nobel made his money from selling DYNAMITE.

"The name Nobel was connected with explosives and with inventions useful to the art of making war"

"Evidently, Alfred Nobel did not consider his involvement in the war materials industry and in the work for world peace as incompatible elements. Rather he gave expression to the prevalent 19th century understanding which maintained, that the scientist was not responsible for how his findings were used."

So maybe that explains the Nobel Peace Prize given to Obama?  It was an ironic gesture, marking Obama as a man who would make a lot of money for the Military Industrial Complex?

If we put SpecOps troops with any group, won't we pretty much guarantee we'll be fighting against our own troops, ones that we've placed with the other groups we're helping?

I think I'd rather take the black eye now than to end up proving to the world that we have absolutely no idea what we're doing. But I guess we've already proven that, haven't we.

And by we, I mean the 'smart people' who are supposedly in charge of this country.

Fri, 10/30/2015 - 14:47 | 6731709 Paveway IV
Paveway IV's picture

The 'smart people' are on the payroll to protect their master's interests. In this case, Israel, and to a lesser extent, the Erdogan mafia.

Obama's announcement comes days after Russia bombed the shit out of opposition forces near the Golan Heights. The fighting has been specifically for the series of Golan hills that Syria had previously used as observation posts and anti-aircraft missile sites for protection from Israeli forces. This is on the Syrian side of the disengagement zone, not the Israeli side in occupied Golan. Israel largely funded and supported the so-called fake Southern Front to take out those hills last year for them. As soon as fake al Nusra took those hills, Israel established their own observation posts there (covertly, of course). The Israeli air activity earlier this week was probably to cover their troops scurrying away from those hills after Russia bombed them and Syrian forces retook them. Interesting that Israel just buzzed around their side of the UNDOF zone - Russia must have laid down the law and threatened to blow them away.

Nettanyahu must be absolutely livid at the thought of losing those hills (nevermind that it violates the 1974 truce). Nobody tells Israel they can't steal more Syrian land - this means war. Israel has obviously demanded that their U.S. congressional bitches do something short of starting WWIII to protect Israel's latest land theft That something is apparently to put SF advisors as human shields in those hills so Russia can't bomb them and Assad can't use them for anti-aircraft and observation posts. It's the quickest, easiest solution until Israel can create another fake Southern Front terrorist group to take the hills back.

It has always been Israel's intentions to take over more territory inside Syria when the opportunity came up. In order to do that, they needed 1) the UNDOF to guard the Israeli 'Safe Zone' between occupied Golan and Syria (done since 1974), 2) the UNDOF forces removed when Israel was ready to make its move (last month) and 3) Syrian observation and anti-aircraft sites removed from southern Syria so they couldn't threaten more Israeli land theft (done last year).

Israel's UN border guards have left the UNDOF zone and are just sitting in a camp in occupied Golan where they can't see a damn thing, i.e., Israeli violations of the cease-fire and disengagement agreements. There's a few UN guys left on Mt. Hermon, but Israel intents to take that UN post as well.

The Erdogan mafia is interested in protecting Raqqa and their profits from illegal ISIS oil theft and smuggling. They make millions a month on that biz. Erdogan just wants to make sure some friendly criminal element runs Raqqa - he doesn't care if it's ISIS or anybody else. As long as they keep the oil theft and smuggling operations going. The Iraqi Kurds have been bought and paid for, so that oil is safe. The Rojava Kurds in Syria won't be bought out, so Erdogan wants to make sure they have nothing to do with Raqqa. Thus, the arming of the fake joint operations (corrupt arabs from Raqqa) and the constant push for Iraqi Kurds (via their bought-and-paid-for peshmerga) to run the show. I still insist Rojava Kurds wouldn't fight and die for Raqqa anyways - they want ISIS gone, but Raqqa isn't in Kurdish territory.

The U.S. has plenty of their own criminal self-interests to protect in Syria and Iraq. For now, the main intent is to keep their main cronies happy: Nettanyahu and Erdogan. SF 'mobile human shields' is a damn desperate maneuver. This will backfire spectacularly on the U.S.

If Hillary supports this lunacy (she will as a card-carrying Israeli-firster), then all Trump has to do is announce that it's the stupidest, most criminal, unconstitutional act he's ever witnessed in his entire life. Then he can go on vacation for the next year and stop campaigning, because he will already have won the presidential election. All he has to do is wait for the inevitable disaster to unfold and say, "I told you so". (Donald: just make check out to Mrs. Paveway - she's going to get it anyways).

I'm an asshole with a keyboard and Google in my mom's basement 'ops center'. I only do my so-called analysis when my on-line pals can't play Call of Duty with me becasue they have classes or are working the late shift at Taco Bell. They suck at CoD, but I like being their friend because sometimes I get free Cheesaritos from them if they close. They will often sell me their little brother's Adderall - especially when they need some extra ching at the end of the month. One of them has a car, too. Which was convenient for going to the mall to scope out chicks, but nobody goes there any more. I mean, we could go by bus any time we want, but then the chicks would laugh at us if there were any. Someday I hope to be a famous analyst like that Eliot Higgins guy. He's a master of the interwebs open-source wizardry. He might be a wizard of some type himself, but maybe just a Hobbit. You can tell by the hair on their feet. No hairy feet - probably a wizard. He might work for Stratfor, something like a covert open-source analyst/wizard. He probably has a car, too. Unless he's a God damn hairy-footed Hobbit - they can't get UK drivers' licenses.

What's your agenda?  This woman just made more sense than ANY other individual I have heard on TV, and she sits on the Armed Services Committee.  They must hate her, and she is a combat veteran who was just promoted to Major in the Reserves.  I can't believe she was allowed almost 10 minutes with Wolfe Blitzer to say the things she said....things I hear on this site every day - it is an illegal war, we have no clear objective, we are playing a dangerous game with the Russians, the CIA has been deeply involved, and more.

She obviously understands things much better than you do.  Everyone should watch this.

Are you trying to pour cold water on the interview in an effort to prevent others from watching?

Why is she on TV ? I am both a cynic and a skeptic.  However, when I see what looks like the real deal, I have to sit up and pay attention.  Who knows what motivated Blitzer (or his handlers) to book her and give her this time, but she validates what we have been saying here, and what I have been trying to tell others for years.  There may be a reason we can't see, but if some kind of psy-op they are playing a dangerous game.  The average citizen may not have been paying too much attention, but anyone who gets curious can find an amazing amount of anti-bank, anti-gov, anti-war information on the web....and this seems to invite curiosity.  Is .gov getting nervous?

My agenda with that comment is fairly simple.

I'm making sure the ZHers who are always rightfully suspicious of anyone and any action and especially of any political party do not get suckered in by a soothing voice that is saying what they want to hear...you know, like so many here did for Obama's first term.

Maybe you aren't suspicious of this 30-something woman who is already in congress and is obviously being groomed up the ladder just as Obama was.

It's truly a shame that, thanks to John Effen Kerry and his token service in VN and his BS three purple hearts (so that he could come back as a "decorated verteran anti-war protester") that people are now suspicious of ulterior motives when they hear of a politician's military service.

The (D) party took us into just about every major war in the 20th century...usually after they said they would keep the US out of war.

You go ahead and faint at her speeches like all the other fools who fainted at Obama's.

I'll remain vigilant.

Well, thank you so much for your concern over our safety, but I have a pretty good bullshit meter of my own, and something about the way this woman carries herself ,and the way she kept coming back at Blitzer, tells me she is at least well informed about the true situation.  She is not afraid to voice the countervailing opinion, either.

Time will tell, and I am going to start paying attention to her because what she is saying is anathema to TPTB, and if it gets repeated very often, we will get a lot more converts to ZH.

My opinion remains that it's very silly of Putin to get drawn into a Middle Eastern proxy war against multiple opponents. Russia's military is, with the exception of some aircraft and tanks, pretty much obsolete and financially speaking they don't have a lot of leverage. Russia's 'ally' in this Syria endeavour, China, is just playing their cards so they can see Russia weaken herself financially and militarily, so that they can gobble up the natural resources. Weakening Russian influence in for example Kazakhstan and Central Asia is another thing that's high on the Chinese agenda, as this paves the way for more natural resources and has strategic advantages.

Russia's other 'ally,' the Iranians, do what they've always done: bankrupt themselves by fighting religious proxy wars.

The USA spends CONSIDERABLY more on the Military and the MIC than Russia, so on the surface, the US Military "should" be better.

However, the Military Industrial Complex exists to profit, and some of the "money" will be spent to ensure "more money" in the future. Add in the unfortunately commonplace reports of flagrant mis-spending (General Alexander and his "Starship Enterprise Bridge" is but one small example), and all of a sudden, the "actual" money yielding "useful" end product declines, maybe considerably.

Add in the inevitable sense of complacency all the way up from the bottom, as a result of fighting almost unopposed, "easy" conflicts against poorly equipped / trained opposition, over the past decade or two, and the experience of facing a very modern, very well-trained and very well-equipped military, might not be such a "cake-walk" as the US Military have been used to.

Syria is NOT a State of the USA, and the "Coalition" / USA have NOT been formally invited to help. Russia HAS been FORMALLY invited, and therefore has International Law on its side should an unfortunate confrontation occur. Assad, as duly elected leader, has every right to formally request the "Coalition" / USA to leave Syria in a reasonable timeframe, and he will be able to point to the far more "effective" Russian assistance, in comparison with the very ineffective "Coalition" / USA efforts over the past year or so. The plain fact that bordering States have also formally invited Russia to "help out" is a real (and probably terminal) slap in the face for the USA, especially in the refined "smile to your face, but stab you in the back" world of International diplomacy.

Putin has played this very well indeed. We are seeing the difference between a very good Chess player, and a rather mediocre golfer.

I still think this should absolutely be a hard sell to the US public by any means. I mean, I know we don't matter, but still.

They've been telling us since Aug. 2014 they were bombing ISIS. Now Russia too is bombing ISIS, and they think avg. people give a shit enough to get worked up over it? Only Zbig, Zionazis and the CIA spook squads are interested in selling this pile of shit and I bet a large portion of the US pop. who loathes Obama has no trouble believeing the" Kenyan, faggot socialist, etc" is backing terrorists ("Our guys who are fighting for their lives").

We've spilled enough of our blood for bullshit over there already.

"Not via internet"

While ZH isn't quite the original ZH, it has amazed me how much discussion on this site is now being discussed in the public arena.  So unless our overlords collapse the internet (like China) then there is an entire counter argument available to offset the unlimited bullshit from the MSM.

"Yer either with us or agin us" is now chicken little peeping about the sky falling.  And "my country right or wrong" has become "you motherfuckers at the top destroyed this country". Send your own sons and daughters to do your dirty work.

Congress got away with giving crooked New York bankers $700 billion despite an overwhelming demand from the public not to give them one red cent, the American people generally hate their politicians, so times are a'changing.

Kayman....you are right about what seems to have been gradually bleeding over into the public arena.  We are both old timers around here, and we have seen the growth in ZH.  I remember when a few hundred readers was a good article, and now it's not unusual to have more comments than there were readers in the early days.  I think a LOT of folks in the communications business, the government, and MIC have discovered this little 'financial blog'.

The site is picking up a many International readers, too, and some solid comments from people with different perspectives.  Every day, more people are awakening, and as you point out, it is getting much easier to figure this shit out now.  So much info is on the web.  Things that you would have to live in a library to discover are now available at your finger tips.  I have no idea if enough critical mass will be built to reach a tipping point, but it will happen if they don't shut it down....and trying to shut it down will be a political nightmare.

Yes, times, they are a'changing, indeed.

Pure evil, you are being awful predjudiced against rednecks here.  First off "white redneck" is redundant and shows your racial bias against whites.  The implications are that there are brown and black rednecks and therefore they are left out of your ridecule.  You gol darn dag burn racist.  Next you will be denigrating hillbillies and Okies.  Well let me tell you, when the shit hits the fan, you will be awful glad to have a bunch of rednecks, hilbillies and okies in the trenches with you, providing of course that you don't perish during the EBT purges.

To get the black rednecks in a fighting mood, hollywood needs to come up with a pit bull dog fight movie between somebody like snoop dog and some Russian (for brown rednecks same movie but using a cock fight, red rednecks the movie would have to have a Russian kicking over a liquor bottle).

It utterly frustrates me to see our special ops forces used as grunts.  Missions the regular army should do, be trained for.  Special Ops are a strategic force not to be wasted and degraded on such low level missions.  A force weakness that needs immediate attention.

Speaking of US military forces, has anyone else noted the apparently (to me at least) increasing advertising for military recruiting? It is encouraging in one way, in that this may indicate that fewer people are volunteering. Of course, engineering a depression along with all the desperation that brings, there will be plenty of hungry and hopeless cannon fodder around to get into battle gear.

We need to show kids that joining the feds in any capacity is not heroic, it's foolish. Selling your ass to a flailing empire is a sign of low self-esteem, not heroism. Men should be more willing to protect these kids. We (hopefully) understand male desposability, and should educate our fellow XY's on this.  And we need to encourage those currently part of internal security to defect, or refuse to protect this discredited regime.

There are already U.S. boots on the ground in Syria.  They've been there since the beginning of this ordeal.  They have simply been covert and 'deniable' rather that part of overt policy.

Who has been training, arming and funding this whole circus from the beginning (and by beginning I mean the whole Arab Spring push)?

At best this is all bungled long term strategic maneuvering (amature hour).  Masked by the very shortest term political (not humanitarian) justifications, which as usual are all meaningless.

they can do as they will.  the American people are letting them get away with it.  no foreign force will stop them either, the conventional US military is just too strong. our policy makers know this, they bank on it and hedge with the militarization of the police force.  this is in all of our faces, right in front of us, yet we do nothing.  no one wants to be the first, to be martyred.

Correction - no foreign force has been willing to stop them.  Russia has always backed away and down from the NATO countries.

They are going to publicly announce US/NATO troops on the ground.  Putin will scare away and not risk hitting anywhere these troops are.  Then more and more troops.  Then, despite the PR being put out claiming they will allow Assad to stay in power, they will go after Assad.

From the article:  The question of using military force in any form without the agreement of Damascus is for us unacceptable,  Well, Putin, talk is not going to do anything.

If Putin had supplied Syria with the S-300 system, as Russia was contracted to do in 2007, Syria could have defended itself.  But even today Putin is too aftraid of Syria taking out a NATO jet to supply the system.  That is a clear sign of the limited action you can expect from Putin.

Putin either has to do it for real or be satisfied with trying to hold some of the western coast of Syria for Russia.  Russia's crying about international law only serves a purpose if they use it to have Syria declare a no fly zone and no troop zone over and in Syria for all but Russia.  And then for Putin to enforce it with actually shoot down planes and bombing foreign (even US) troops.
