Obama Set To Announce US Boots On The Ground In Syria, Russia Threatens Deployment "Unacceptable"

Tyler Durden's picture

When the US media began airing helmet cam footage of Delta Force executing a prison break at an ISIS compound last week we suggested that Washington was making an effort to prepare the American public for more boots on the ground in Iraq and the possibility of ground troops in Syria.

The catalyst: Russia and Iran. Put simply, the US has been embarrassed by Moscow and Tehran’s coordinated effort to rout the Sunni extremists backed by Riyadh, Doha, and Ankara operating in Iraq and Syria and now, as Baghdad and Kabul threaten to turn to The Kremlin for help in the face of American ineptitude, the Pentagon is desperate to show that the US can still be effective at fighting terrorism.

So while John Kerry wanders around (hopefully not on a bike) in Vienna in a futile effort to get Saudi Arabia and Turkey to sit at the same table and talk rationally with Russia and Iran, the US military is contemplating how to insert itself into the battle without sparking a world war.

For its part, Baghdad has informed the Western media that it neither wants nor needs US help fighting ISIS (that’s what all the Iran-backed militias are for) and so instead, The White House may be on the verge of sending spec ops to Syria.

  • OBAMA ADMIN. MAY ANNOUNCE SPECIAL OPS FORCES IN SYRIA:CNBC/RTRS

Here's Reuters:

The United States will send 20 to 30 special operations forces to Syria to serve as military advisers in the fight against Islamic State, a U.S. official said.

The additional U.S. troops will operate in a limited "advise and assist" capacity, without changing President Barack Obama's overall mission to combat the militant group, a separate U.S. official said.

Of course the entire idea of "advise and assist" is a joke in the first place. Here's WaPo:

Depicting the U.S. mission in Iraq became an even more delicate activity last week after a joint raid in the Iraqi city of Hawijah, which freed about 70 Islamic State hostages and left a U.S. Delta Force soldier dead. The death of Master Sgt. Joshua L. Wheeler was the first time a U.S. servicemember had been killed in a firefight there since U.S. troops returned to Iraq last year.

Briefing reporters hours after the raid took place,  Pentagon press secretary Peter Cook said that “U.S. forces are not in a combat role in Iraq.” He said a team of elite U.S. soldiers had provided transport and support for the Iraqi Kurdish commandos. But the Americans were not intending to take part in the raid itself, he said. That changed when a firefight erupted and Wheeler jumped in to help. Later that day, Cook said that Wheeler’s death was the first combat casualty there since 2011.

On Monday, asked about operations in Iraq, White House press secretary Josh Earnest declined to characterize the operations there as combat. He said the “train, advise and assist” mission differed from “the long-term, sustained ground combat operations” that took place after the 2003 invasion. Over 160,000 U.S. troops were stationed in Iraq at the peak of that war.

But on Wednesday, Col. Steve Warren, a U.S. military spokesman in Baghdad, described the mission in blunt terms. “We’re in combat,” he said, speaking via video feed to reporters at the Pentagon. “That’s why we all carry guns.  That’s why we all get combat patches when we leave here. That’s why we all receive imminent danger pay. So, of course it’s combat.”

This comes just hours after Moscow reminded the world that if you haven't received an official invitation from Bashar al-Assad, you are not welcome to come to the party. Here's Reuters, citing Tass:

Russia's deputy foreign minister Sergei Ryabkov said on Friday that no country could use military force in Syria without first securing the agreement of the Syrian government, the TASS news agency reported.

TASS said Ryabkov was responding to a question about the prospect of the United States launching a ground operation in Syria.

"The question of using military force in any form without the agreement of Damascus is for us unacceptable," it quoted him as saying.

Make no mistake, this will be a disaster.

If US spec ops are placed with the YPG, it will run afoul of Washington's coordination with Turkey just two days before an election that revolves around Erdogan's attempt to paint the Kurds as a threat to national security.

If the Pentagon embeds US troops with the Free Syrian Army, well then they'll be engaging Hezbollah and the Quds directly.

Of course no matter where Obama decides to place the troops, they'll be at risk of getting hit by Russian airstrikes and the consequences of that speak for themselves...

We've had our military "boots" on the ground advising ISIS and they have been getting slaughtered right alongside them just like Ukraine!

Otherwise why would the "white chimp's" head be on a swivel.  He's fucking pissed because he's getting torn a new one just like Ukraine....

You have to remember that "name, rank and serial number" got thrown out after 9/11!

When you get whacked nowadays you just disappear and don't come home as most of them have a revolving door between active-duty and "active-duty merc"... And why would they want to be named when they have no legal reason to be inside Syria in the first place???...

Why the the Army Sgt in that "fire fight" even got mentioned probably has more to do with it being used as PR measuring stick for the boyz and girlz at home that want to volunteer after such a heroic loss!  "Jessica Lynch 2.0"...

If the same type of coordination and communication protocols are applied to Special Forces operations as are being applied to air force operations, then this could work.

I do not believe that the US will agree to this, however.

During the brief conflict in Georgia in 2008, some US and Israeli military personnel were caught up in the conflict. Technically-speaking, these men were probably there as mercenary "private" contractors. So, nothing was made over their loss. The Russians have taken a similar approach on a much grander scale in the Donbass regions of Ukraine.

The declaration that active duty uniformed special forces will be inserted into Syria and Iraq against the explicit wishes of both the Syrian and Iraqi governments is especially dangerous and foolhardy on two levels:

First, by international law and the UN Charter, the US has become a declared "aggressor". We are violating international treaties that we have signed and that we have called upon others (except Israel of course) to respect. (By the way, we are also violating our own laws; but we have been doing that for so long, it has become irrelevant.)

Second, there is no room for plausible deniability. ZioCons will demand escalation and retribution for every American casualty. We have no sympathizers in Suria. Eventually there will be no more sympathizers in Iraq. We will become unwanted and resented intruders to everyone.

The policy is both schizophrenic and delusional. What's really sad it that the US government is deliberate in both its deceit of the public and its own grandiose delusions of solving the worlds problems. When things go bad for the US, and they will, there are some things our former partners (Russia and China), now our enemies will never forgive, betrayal is one, and stupidity that causes war is the other.

It seems as if Russia has to eradicate the FSA before American troops arrive, and that is probably not possible.

If the Russians manage to create a territory in Northern Syria that stretches continuously from the Mediterranean to Iraq I reckon that they should consider themselves lucky.

The West probably intends to create a state on the border to Golan that agrees to let Israel have Golan. The FSA will probably give up Golan if they depend on US support.

However, it seems as if the Kurds have chosen an alliance with the US rather than the Russians. I don´t understand why. Neither the US nor Russia will probably support an independent Kurdish state. Turkey has declared that they will attack an independent Kurdish state. Will the US do exactly the opposite to what the NATO member Turkey wants?

At glance, the most realistic long-term solution for the Kurds seems to be to create a smaller Syria in Western and Northern Syria together with the Alawites, Druze and the Christians. It also seems as if they don´t need to incorporate the Aleppo area in order to get a continuous piece of land from Eastern to Western Syria. I don´t understand why the Kurds, who generally are moderate Sunni Muslims, should prefer to live with Arab Sunni Muslims who generally are less secular than the Alawites. It should also be easier for the Kurds to influence the rule of a society in which they are a large minority rather than a small minority.

I don´t understand how the Russians and the Assad regime think that they would benefit from regaining territory controlled by radical Sunni Muslims. It should be hard to control a large population that wants to have Sunni rule where they live. But perhaps the territorial gains they are planning for are more modest. It´s also possible that the Russians don´t have any other objectives than prevent Assad from falling in the short term in order to preserve Russia´s credibility as a military alliance partner.

This is what I posted on ZH a few days ago regarding the potential for this kind of thing to happen:

What I see coming is the US embedding troops with the "opposition" (i.e. ISIS/ISIL) fighters and then covertly telling the Russians and Syrians that the troops are there.  Therefore if Russian planes bomb those targets they will be attacking American forces.

This would be right in line with the kind of of duplicitous crap the US has pulled before.  The only problem I see with this scenario is how the US justifies putting their troops in the same area as the supposed enemy - I'm sure their ministry of propaganda will figure something out though.

You don't seem to read up much do you? Everything about ISIS was allowed by the US and our allies. How can you deny that when even Kerry brought up the funding from countries such as Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, etc., to ISIS and Al-nusra? We have been aiding ISIS since their inception, providing weapons and ordnance ("oops, those were for the Kurds. silly us!"), vehicles, even cold hard cash (captured banks just FILLED with reserves for no valid reason).

So, if any military force wishes to keep Assad in power, they must necessarily face down ISIS, hence YES Russia is helping to defeat ISIS. Putin himself directly said he was coming to Assad's aid and would not let him fall. He didn't say he was there to fight just ISIS, he said he was there to keep Assad in power.

The DC lawyers dreamed up the "American Volunteers Group" (Flying Tigers) where

US pilots would resign, become civilians (sheepdipped),and fly contractually for pay

to support the Chinese.I don't think the Japanese were very impressed with this

diplomatic stratagem. It is noteworthy that this formation morphed into Civilian Air

Transport after the war,and was very active in the years leading up to the Viet Nam

war.The CAT airline is well known as a CIA asset, amongst other airlines, hotels,

You know things are going badly when the news from MI is tucked away on page 3, and primarily documents body count numbers given to them by their govt.

"27 suspected militants were killed yesterday . . ."

" . . .drone strike on a suspected militant stronghold reportedly resulted in 14 deaths . . ."

This phase came and went about 4 months ago.  This admin is still totally fucked, except now everybody knows it.  Body counts would be laughable now.

Oh! Poor, little, absolute beginners. Do you know, the maniac who makes the dead hand, in the subway? Well, Obama is testing Putin, as already done with China: an announcement via press, and Beijing started yelling like a little girl. So the black man realized Chinese were afraid. He was right. But Putin is a very brave man and a genius, and doesn’t fall in the trap. At the moment Russia is seraphic and impassible. Mariya Zacharova has just only talking about Syrian refugees in Russia. If I know Vlad a little, he is warning the USA behind the scenes (not to humiliate them), if not, is waiting for an official announcement, then will freeze them. This time, Obama is in danger of walking on a gargantuan shit.

Is anyone else getting the feeling that there's going to be an Archduke Franz Ferdinand moment in MENA sometime soon?  With the crazy alliances and counter-alliances in that part of the world, where the US is supposedly supporting groups in one country, but opposing those same groups in other countries?  With Russian jets hitting ISIS targets and Iran poised to hit ISIS on the ground, and we put US military square in the middle?  There's going to be an "accident" sometime, somewhere.  A US commando is going to "accidentally" shoot down a Russian fighter or Iranian infantry is going to hit a unit that contains US commandos "accidentally" and we'll move from a proxy war to a full blown WWIII.

This is just an insane idea from the same assholes that have had nothing but insane ideas for some time now.

While I agree absolutely with the idea of what you're writing it is my expectation that if there is to be a war it will be declared by the US and not China or Russia.

That's not to say that there will not be a war, I think there will be. I just think that Russia and China, Russia in particular, have already demonstrated that it is pretty much impossible to force them to take a position that the US wants them to take.

I think that the US thinks that Russia works the same as the US does. It doesn't, the levels of discipline, knowledge and skill are poles apart and so if the US plans from the basis of examining their own paradigm and extrapolating to that of their opponent they will get it wrong, every time. I think that this is exactly what the US are doing, they lack the skill to be able to empathise with the Russians and the Russian situation (and the Syrians and the Chinese and ISIS).

I haven't had time to digest this yet. But one quick comment. The deployment of US troops on Syrian soil is illegal under all international law. This Obama move is an invasion, by all legal terms of international law, Obama has invaded Syria.

Today a democratic congressman, and Iraq war veteran complained that Obama was too weak. He wants more US troops in Syria, backed by armor and Air Power. Now mind you, this is a liberal talking.

We are on the road to WWIII. And as Marc Faber has said many times. "The USA will always find someone to go to war with". And there you have it!

To quote Goering:

"Naturally the common people don't want war: Neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, IT IS THE LEADERS of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is TELL THEM THEY ARE BEING ATTACKED, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. IT WORKS THE SAME IN ANY COUNTRY."

Don't be misled.

The United States will send 20 to 30 special operations forces to Syria to serve as military advisers in the fight against Islamic State, a U.S. official said.

The US will probably deploy 4 or 5 of these special operations forces at a half dozen of the FSA/moderate rebel bases which have the most munitions and equipment to prevent, by the presence of the US special operations forces, destruction by Russian air attacks.

The Negro has been told by the Pentagon that the Russians will not dare to destroy any assets at bases where the special ops guys are deployed.  As that would mean full out warfare between the East and the West, who have a full army on Russia's western border now.

Will Putin let the NATO coalition prevent his air force from striking Rebel assets used to kill Russian, Iranian and Syrian forces?

This latest announcement by Obama that 'advisors' will be deployed illegally to Syria is another defining moment in our nation's history.

The Vietnam War started this way. First dozens of special operations people were sent to South Vietnam, then it escalated to full army divisions fighting the Viet Cong and the North Vietnamese. The end of it was 58,000 American men died, a country was destroyed and the American military was defeated.

However there is a difference this time. The people have alternate media sources at their fingertips and the MSM cannot cover up the truth with lies any longer.

What will the youth of America do if Washington tries to institute the military draft? I know I will not let these bastards take my son or grandson. I will resist with any means available and if it means killing them so be it. If Americans have any courage left they will deny these evil minions of Satan the means to make war.

I swear to God they will die by my hand if they try.

personally I don't think this will lead to much, if any escalation in regards to the Moscow v Washington ongoing saga. this seems to me to be more of a political move to try and gain a stronger position during the conference then a move of any real military significance. Moscow has zero interest in bombing the Kurds who in turn don't have any interest in seeing Assad ousted. as far as the FSA goes I don't see Washington embedding spec. ops troops with units that will surrender and turn over said troops to whatever jihad group comes along first.so I'm thinking there is very little chance that they will find themselves in a location that puts them at risk of being caught in a Russian airstrike.

unless, of course that is what DC wants to happen which could be but IMHO that is not the play here.

ironically by embedding them with the Kurds there is more of a chance that the American troops will be hit by fellow NATO country Turkey, who is actively bombing the Kurds in Syria. I think Washington in it's unending arrogance, ignorance and general psychopathy simply assumes that the Turks wouldn't dare launch strikes if they know US forces may be at risk. this despite the fact that they have already been warned otherwise. then again it's not as if Washington actually cares whether or not the dogs they let of the leash actually come back alive or not. hell, with the way they treat vets it would not surprise me to find that they preferred that they didn't.

if anything tips us over the edge it will not be Syria, instead it will be this ongoing conflict between Moscow and DC over the land based elements of the MDS in eastern Europe. Washington seems determined to push ahead with it despite the deal with Iran over it's nuclear program. now while it probably would not have a fatal affect Russia's ability to launch a nuclear first strike, it could dramatically effect their ability to respond if attacked first. which of course raises suspicion as to why DC is so instant on following through on it in the first place.

Moscow can read the writing on the wall.

MAD is the only thing that has kept the world from sliding into that abyss for over 60 years now, it was the only reason why the Cuban missile crises ended without a few billion people dead. any action that throws that balance off, which the MDS will certainly do and in a major way, is just inviting a disaster of epic proportion. once one side feels that they can "win" a nuclear war, it's only a matter of time before the idea becomes an attempt to do just that in action. sadly one needs only to read Washington's white papers on first strike doctrine to see that they are clearly insane enough to believe just that. or there is the other possibility, that being that the other side feels that they are now put at such a disadvantage that there ability to deter an aggressor simply by having nuclear weapons is no longer relevant or effective. leaving them with a feeling of halving no choice but to strike first in order to attempt to restore some kind of strategic balance.

either way that constantly boiling issue is far more dangerous to life on earth than what is happening in Syria. unless of course Moscow and Washington really do start shooting at each other in the skies and bombing each others positions on the ground. if that happens it could get out of anybody's ability to control regardless of plans or intentions.

it seems the whole world is a tinder box right now and we are all just hoping nobody drops a match.
