No Survivors After Russian Airplane With 224 On Board Crashes In Egypt's Sinai, ISIS Claims Responsibility

Tyler Durden's picture

Update:

* * *

With tensions already at deeply concerning levels between Russians and their various adversaries in the Middle East region, a few hours ago this Saturday morning, around 4:20am GMT to be precise, a Russian airliner carrying 224 in crew and passengers, including 138 women, 62 men and 17 children, crashed in Egypt's Sinai peninsula. Egyptian officials say there are no survivors from the crash. This is the worst Russian air accident in history.

The Airbus A321 shown below, also known as Kolavia Flight 7K9268, operated by Russian airline Kogalymavia under the brand name Metrojet, was flying from the Sinai Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh to St Petersburg in Russia when it went down in a desolate mountainous area of central Sinai soon after daybreak.

The aircraft took off at 5:51 a.m. Cairo time (0351 GMT) and disappeared from radar screens 23 minutes later, Egypt's Civil Aviation Ministry said in a statement. It was at an altitude of 31,000 feet (9,400 meters) when it vanished from radar screens. According to various flight tracking services the aircraft, having made an apparently smooth take off, lurched into a rapid descent shortly after approaching cruising altitude.

Airbus has confirmed the crash:

Airbus regrets to confirm that an A321-200 operated by Metrojet was involved in an accident shortly after 6:17 local time (04:17 GMT) over the Sinai Peninsula today. The aircraft was operating a scheduled service, Flight 7K-9268 from Sharm el Sheikh (Egypt) to St. Petersburg (Russia).

The concerns and sympathy of the Airbus employees go to all those affected by this tragic accident of Flight 7K-9268.

The aircraft involved in the accident, registered under EI-ETJ was MSN (Manufacturer Serial Number) 663, was produced in 1997 and since 2012 operated by Metrojet. The aircraft had accumulated some 56000 flight hours in nearly 21000 flights. It was powered by IAE-V2500 engines. At this time no further factual information is available.

In line with ICAO annex 13, an Airbus go-team of technical advisors stands-by ready to provide full technical assistance to French Investigation Agency – BEA – and to the Authorities in charge of the investigation.

The A321-200 is the largest member of the Airbus twin-engine A320 Family seating up to 240 passengers. The first A321 entered service in January 1994. By the end of September 2015, some 6500 A320 Family aircraft were in service with over 300 operators. To date, the entire fleet has accumulated some 168 million flight hours in some 92.5 million flights.

A loop of the flight's brief flight before crashing is shown below:

The aircraft was descending rapidly at about 6,000 (2,000 meters) feet per minute before the signal was lost to air traffic control.

A cabinet statement said Egyptian military planes had spotted wreckage of the plane in the Hassana area, south of Arish. The statement said: "Military planes have discovered the wreckage of the plane in a mountainous area and 45 ambulance have been directed to the site to evacuate dead and wounded."

People gather at the airline information desk at of Russian airline Kogalymaviaís desk.

The crash scene is a disaster.

"I now see a tragic scene," an Egyptian security officer at the scene told Reuters by telephone. "A lot of dead on the ground and many who died whilst strapped to their seats.

"The plane split into two, a small part on the tail end that burned and a larger part that crashed into a rock. We have extracted at least 100 bodies and the rest are still inside," the officer, who requested anonymity, said.

Emergency services and aviation specialists quickly began an inspection of the wreckage for any patterns of damage that could point to the cause. One of two flight recorders was quickly found, but wreckage was scattered over a wide area.

The security officer said 120 intact bodies had been found. Express adds that other bodies were also found strapped in to their seats after rescue teams searched the crash site.

The full roster of passengers on the doomed flight can be found here.

Since accidents at cruising altitude are one of the rarest categories of accidents (but also among the most deadly, accounting for 13 percent of fatal incidents), the immediate question on everyone's mind - was the plane shot down from the ground? So far there are no clue as to what caused the crash.  Sinai is the scene of an insurgency by militants close to Islamic State, who have killed hundreds of Egyptian soldiers and police and have also attacked Western targets in recent months.

Russia, an ally of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, launched air raids against opposition groups in Syria including Islamic State on Sept. 30.

Egyptian Prime Minister Sherif Ismail was heading to the crash site in the Hassana area 35 km (22 miles) south of the Sinai Mediterranean coastal city of Al Arish with several cabinet ministers on a private jet, the tourism ministry said.

Russian television showed film of anxious relatives and friends waiting for information at St. Petersburg's Pulkovo airport. Russian President Vladimir Putin declared a day of national mourning for Sunday.

The Airbus A321 has a solid safety record. It is a 185-seat medium-haul jet in service since 1994, with over 1,100 in operation worldwide and a good safety record. It is a highly automated aircraft relying on computers to help pilots stay within safe flying limits.

Saturday's crash is the second fatal accident involving this variant of the A320 jetliner family, according to data from the Flight Safety Foundation. Airbus said it had no independent information on the crash and declined to comment on the aircraft involved.

If any form of terrorist activity is confirmed, this will surely escalate the war in the region which yesterday bypassed mere proxy status, and will now see both Russian and US soldiers fighting on the opposite sides of the battlefield, this will merely push the world that much closer to a unrestrained conflict.

For now the hope is that this was purely a technical issue: the Russian RIA news agency, citing sources at Sharm el-Sheikh, said: "The pilot contacted the dispatcher and reported technical problems, asking for a change of the route and a landing at Cairo airport, after which communication was broken."

According to the airline, the cause of the tragic accident was not human error.

According to RT, Metrojet had a fatal incident in 2011, when one of its planes caught fire on a runway in Surgut Airport in Russia’s Urals. Three people died and 40 were injured as the plane burned out in just 10 minutes.

The last large-scale Russian airline incident happened in November 2013, when Tatarstan Airlines Flight 363 crashed at Kazan International Airport while attempting to land. Fifty people died in the incident.

The UK's David Cameron has expressed his condolences.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed his deepest condolences to the families of victims of the crashed airliner.  Putin also ordered government ministries to offer immediate assistance to relatives of those killed and an investigation into the causes of the crash.

The president declared a national day of mourning to take place on Sunday, November 1.

Exactly, this was not the work of a manpad.  I suspect that a bomb was loaded on board.

And, if it were a bomb, that implies a few things.  First, there is no way that a squad of moronic, useful-idiot front-line ISIS pulled this off.  Second, only those with the means of infultrating airport security would be able to execute this sort of thing.  Thus, that points strongly to the regional intelligence player, one with a relatively warm relationship with the Egyptian powers that be.

That regional player would be called Mossad of Israel.

The question comes down to this: Is Putin ready to take on the world order that has more or less ruled for the past 70 years?

Up front... lots of questions.  Any airplane crash is a sad tragedy.  Can only hope more tragedy doesn't come from facts discovered involving this event.

I stopped the RT video after the lady said that DNA samples will be collected from relatives.  That sounds too fishy.

My spider-senses started to tingle after seeing the montage of all the weel-produced photos of people hugging eachother at the airport.

Regardless of what happened to this plane, one thing is certain. In a world increasingly at war, lumpenleisure luxuries like commercial air travel (jetting off to exotic resorts) are going to be impossible to sustain.

Statistically, commercial airliners are still safer than private jets ( http://time.com/2807413/safe-private-jets/ ). Let's hope more executives opt for private jet transportation.

Yeah I saw that one too Fred...

Tatum has made the rounds A.J. prominent among them, albeit more sparingly than some others from "the Firm"... They are all in the business of intrigue as they want you to believe that they are risking "life and limb" to come clean to tell you the unvarnished truth...

Trouble is I wouldn't trust one god damn thing that comes out of the "pie hole" of anyone from Langley or the "Meade" with some very rare exceptions from people like Binney, Tice and Drake!...

Langley is by far the most pathological in the lies department and if you want to see the "leopard never changing his spots" watch Code Pink/Mr. VIPS himself Ray McGovern on CrossTalk RT News yesterday morning.

The other guests tore him a new one and you could visibley see how ticked off he was when he was defending the "white chimp"... When I was watching what he said I was saying to myself how can you defend the indefensible?... This is a guy that in his two terms has dismantled the U.S. Constitution and started open range wars with Russia's business partner of 50 years forcing more than 40,000 Russians to leave Syria in the last 4 years and stoked the worst ethnic conflict at the front door of Russia in Ukraine!...

Doesn't really matter at this point whether it's 30 or 30,000... The U.S. military has been intrumental at ripping apart Syria with thousands of "advisors" since 2011 in Syria both "flag patchers" and mercs from the likes of Dyncorp and Academi.

We've been in WWIII since the Volgagrad train bombings in 2013 and the overthrow of the Ukraine government in 2014, and as long as the vast majority in this Country believe otherwise it can only get much worse!

Putin's little Syrian adventure just got more expensive.

According to internet whackjob logic, the obvious conclusion would be that Putin did it to have an eexcuse to attack Egypt. If this had happened to a US plane, the nutbars here would all be agreeing how likely it was that the CIA did it.

Meanwhile, back in the real world, it was probably just some Islamic Brotherhood assets working in baggage handling or cleaning crews.

Sounds like a technical problem as pilot reported, if looking to land early then clearly something was up with the plane.

Else the only entity likely to have shot the plane down at cruising alititude is Israel, and would be too obvious in that location. Then again in a world of false flags you need to also ask who would beneifit from such an act.

Unlikely to be ISIS as they wouldn't know whose airliner it was at that altitude and of course need to have know how to use the quipment.

Spot on. That was my immediate reaction as well. The Russians were more than very close by the way; as far as I know they got right up the Israelis' noses and warned them to back off.

This air disaster has Mossad written all over it. Probably working as ground crew in the Sinai, the same way it was an Israeli company "looking after" security at Schiphol airport when MH-17 left Amsterdam last year.

Russia has sent 5 plane loads of personnel and equipment to investigtate. If they conclude that the rogue state of Israel was responsible you can safely assume a response of Biblical proportions will be heading Tel Aviv's way in short order. These Jewish nutters really do think they are invulnerable, based on their mistaken belief that they are the People of the Covenant. Big mistake. They had the same insane idea back in the first century AD when they took on the might of the Roman Empire and got a savage and merciless beating in return, together with the total destruction of their Temple and with it the Jewish Nation.

I have a very strong feeling we're about to see a repeat of this in our own time, with Russia and Russian allies playing the part of the legion and auxiliaries. The time is approaching when many in Israel will regret the day they ever fell for the lie that they were the Chosen People, protected by God.

You are correct. Especially considering this is an Airbus. I try to avoid flying on Airbus planes because according to pilot reports their philosophy is that the computer knows best. If there is some sort of a glitch and the plane decides to take a dive the pilot can do nothing about it.

That was suspected reason for the crash between South America and Europe few years back.

Boeing on the other hand has reverse philosophy. Computers assist but pilot makes the final decision... which sucks if your pilot starts screaming "Alan's Snackbar'.

The near vertices descent implies catastrophic failure. Plane is the Volvo of the skies so I find a mechanical failure hard to fathom.

Egypt is going full rested on the Jihad front and the sharm airport is not the most secure in the world. Also the Russians are not liked in Sharm - but their money is - now Putin is involved in Syria it would have very simple to set something up in this backwater.

"The pilot contacted the dispatcher and reported technical problems, asking for a change of the route and a landing at Cairo airport, after which communication was broken."

A technical fault that results in a vertical descent? The pilot reported a technical issue and requests landing at Cairo. So obviously at that stage not catestrophic in nature, thus not a bomb or air attack.

A wing would have to break off to do this, or do we have another death by Pilot, which now appears to be the conclusion most suited to the facts known at the momoent, or somebody breaking into the cockpit.

Egyptian economy is doing well right now as there has been a TREMENDOUS amount of GCC money pumped into construction and development projects in Egypt. However, there is an increasing Jihadi problem in Egypt which is getting less coverage.

AFP, CairoFriday, 23 October 2015

Four people including two Egyptian policemen were wounded Friday in a failed attempt to dismantle a bomb outside a Cairo hotel near the pyramids, a security official said.

Two policemen and two hotel security guards were wounded as they tried to deactivate the explosive device found by security guards outside the Meridien hotel near the Giza pyramids, he said.

The "problems" with Malaysia's national airline began when their former PM tried to start a parallel International Criminal Court to try war criminals Bush, Cheney, Blair etc., because the one in the Hague was doing nothing.

This plane was not shot down, the pilot reported mechanical problems and requested a redirect to Cario for emergency landing.

If I had to guess at this point, based on the extremely rapid descent, it is possible that there was tampering with the electronics or mechanicals at the ground crew level. Then whatever device was triggered by a timer or electronic signal. The usual suspects of course.

Let's hope the Russian investigators get there first, but that already seems unlikely.

Early speculation about causes of major air crashes is usually a loser's game.

The newer generation of Airbuses and Boeings are flown by computers, with the pilots largely monitoring the computers.  When there is a technical problem, the pilots often cannot figure out the problem before they run out of time.  See this excellent discussion in an analysis of the 2009 crash off Brazil of Air France Flight 447:  http://www.vanityfair.com/news/business/2014/10/air-france-flight-447-crash

Air travel in the newest airliners is generally safer than before, but very small technical problems can, strangely and very quickly, lead to seemingly inexplicable catastrophe.

I have flown on domestic carriers in Russia and had fingers crossed... never heard of this airline... must be really cheap as trips to Egypt are incredibly cheap... two weeks with hotel food and flight for $250... too cheap... but these planes are usually maintained under contract with leasing firms.

What is odd is that it broke up in the air... with such a descent it would be obliterated if it hit the ground going straight down,, if it  broke up due to speed of descent (too fast) there prob would not  be such reports of cries from the passengers on the ground, too intact, again lots of speed and smashing into the ground. Hard to believe the plane would crash like this even if it had a fire, or loss of all power.

smells like a bomb or more than one bomb... blasted the plane in mid air in pieces and they fell to the ground in largly intact.

ISIS is run by Mossad...

Putin needs S400 on the ground in Egypt and needs to get the factories going to build thousands of these systems. Also even build cheap old WW2 tanks with newer fire control. They work good. Mass produce them... get Iran to build them in the thousands.

Russia and China need to delay WW3 until they have sufficient numbers of good weapons on hand. So get those factories humming. NEOCONS should not dictate the timing.

This whole thing reeks of Jewish mysticism.  The Jews ultimately worship Satan seeing that their holy day falls on Saturday (Saturn).

In occult mysticism, Isis (ISIL?) is the daughter of Saturn.

Halloween or "All Souls Day" is when the world of the dead nears the living.

Sinai, where the plane crashed is where serpent worshipper Moses received the Law and was illuminated.

$1 says they find an intact passport in pristine condition that belonged to an Isis member which just happen to fall 30,000 feet and survive a flaming wreckage.

IMHO this was exactly what it looks like, a tragic accident. while it is possible that the airliner was shot down I don't think that is likely to be the case.  there is nothing to suggest that IS Egypt has the tools needed to bring down a plane flying at that altitude, in fact I came across some interesting print at military times stating how Israel and Egypt has limited low alt flights because IS did get their hands on some MANPADS but there was no threat to planes flying at higher altitudes.

and even if there patrons in the kingdom or washington or wherever did hand off a stray BUK or western equivalent it would not have been deployed to the Sinai for so many obvious reasons. also why shoot down a civilian airliner and then stay silent about it? after all the calls for jihad against Russia you would think IS would be gloating over this victory and threatening more to come if Moscow does not back off. cause no matter who is pulling the strings that would be the point, but the tactic doesn't really work that well if nobody claims it. there is no other possible point or purpose to shooting down a civilian airliner, that's just terrorism 101. and there is nothing to suggest there were any high value targets on that particular flight.

I could be wrong but I don't see a shoot down here  just a sad turn of fate for those on board.

Some drunken Ukrainian Nazi can bring down a plane full of civilians with bankster-financed weaponry just to make Putin look bad, you think a goatfucker in league with the House of Saud can't do the same?

This was a modern Airbus, not a rented Soviet rustbucket that was unsafe even when it was new.

A goatfucker decided to pay his way into heaven with the corpses of Christian civilians and earn some infamy here on earth, and shot the Russian airliner out of the sky. Simple as that.

Back in reality, I doubt Riyadh is as happy as all that with the job done by their self-styled allies in Egypt. Muslims who kill or injure Russian civilians quickly learn that the life of a million low-IQ goatfuckers are not worth a Russian fingernail.

Russia had many good reasons to remove the House of Saud and restore order to the Middle East on her terms. Now add good old fashioned revenge to the list.
