Homicide Rates Cut In Half Over Past 20 Years (While New Gun Ownership Soared)

Tyler Durden's picture

Submitted by Ryan McMaken via The Mises Institute,

The Pew Research Center reported last week that the murder rate was cut nearly in half from 7 per 100,000 in 1993 to 3.6 per 100,000 in 2013. Over the same period, overall gun deaths (including accidents and suicides) have fallen by one-third from 15.2 to 10.6 per 100,000.

In spite of this, Pew reports, the American public believes that homicides and gun deaths are increasing in the United States. Those who think violence is getting worse should probably watch less television and look around them instead. The murder rate in the US is currently similar to 1950s levels.

Meanwhile, the number of privately owned guns (and gun commerce in general) in the United States has increased substantially in recent decades.

Source: Firearms Commerce in the US, Annual Statistical Update. (From BATF)

According to the World Bank, here are the homicide rates in the US since 1995:

Here's the homicide rate graphed against total new firearms (manufactured plus imported) in US (indexed with 1995 =100):

Meanwhile, in Mexico, where the US Consulate counsels Americans to not even carry pocket knives in the face of "Mexico’s strict weapons laws." There is exactly one gun store in Mexico. In short, the Mexican experience is a perfect example of the effect of prohibition. A lack of legal access to guns leads to a need for illegal access.

The murder rates in Mexico:

Mexican politicians complain that weapons are easily smuggled from the United States, and that is the source of their problem. But if access to guns is the problem, shouldn't murder rates be much higher in the United States? Moreover, if gun smuggling is such a problem in Mexico, this is just another piece of evidence showing the weakness of prohibition laws in preventing access to the intended target of prohibition.

Naturally, we can't blame everything on gun prohibition in Mexico, nor can we attribute the murder rate decline solely to more guns in the US. But we can say two things for sure: (1) Gun restriction in Mexico has not prevented enormous increases in the murder rate, and (2) increases in gun totals in the US have not led to a surge in the murder rate.

Better check back with the Marxist mothership before making that argument again.  Another branch of the Marxist cadre uses 'global overpopulation' as justification for its existence.

Police: Concealed carry license holder kills armed gunman

A masked man walked into the store and currency exchange about 7 p.m. Saturday on the city's southwest side, displayed a handgun and announced a robbery to an employee, police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said. The gunman then pointed his weapon at another employee and forced her to the back of the store.

The armed customer then fatally shot the man, identified Sunday by the Cook County medical examiner's office as 55-year-old Reginald Gildersleeve.

Moar info from another source:

... the dead guy's name was Reginald Gildersleeve, 55, with a long arrest record who was out on bond . He had prior convictions for robbery. As expected , the dead guy's family says he could not have done what was reported in the story.....

Happened in my home town, and I have to tell you, if it was faked, then the government had all the families, local police, several hundred other first responders, teachers, funeral homes etc. inside the conspiracy and prepped with world class acting skills and rapidly evolving data and imagery falsification skills. If so, They fooled the whole town, and much of southwestern CT, in person to person contact.

These idiots can't even run a website with billions of dollars, but we wish to credit them with this impossible degree of operational sophistication?

Don't make it any easier on the government by playing the role of radical nutjob for them. Huge conspiracies are not necessary in order to realize there is dangerous deep state corruption afoot. It is an affront to the people whose lives were destroyed by the shooter and further insulted by the people who ran to wave their children's bloody shirts around.

What puzzles me about Sandy Hook was the lack of crime scene photos.  Showing spent .223/5.56 cartridges would have confirmed an AR-15 was used (Yes, I know AR's are now in multiple calibers).  Photos of the bullet holes in walls would have also given some clues.  Even pics of recovered slugs.  On top of that they tore the building down.  Also, what about the guy who was running in the woods behind the shcool dressed in similar clothing to the shooter?  Again, I'm just raising questions and not trying to make a case.

This is the fault of the ministry of truth, America's vile propaganda system, the mainstream media.  Owned by only 6 corporations the MSM is only interested in social engineering, not the facts.

I watched the NBC nightly news tonight for the first time in 20 years.  What a crazy, confusing matrix most Americans live in.  Given the "information" most Americans receive, they cannot be counted on to render sound judgment on important issues.

When my wife and I took our first vacation EVER in 2012, we got lost in Philadelphia and wandered around trying to find a cop to show us how to get back.  Met a black lady, maybe in her forties, and she told us we had to get out of where we were.  No idea where we were, but she lead us down the street and pointed up a road and told us to up six blocks and turn left.

Same Trip, we're in Washington, DC.  We're coming back from our Segway Tour and got on the wrong subway.  We ended up at a stop where we were two grains of salt in a sea of pepper.  We're studying the map trying to figure out where we went wrong.  This hulking kid, about 20 or so, comes over.  You can't be here, it's not good for you.  This area is bad for white people. I said thanks, we're really lost and need to get back to the Capitol Hilton.  He walked us to the platform and told us how to get there.  Then stayed with us until we got on the train.  Nice Kid.

Same Trip, New York City.  All I know is I want to be able to say I went to Central Park once in my lifetime.  So we took a subway and got off at some point.  Asked a lady walking by which way was Central Park.  She pointed to the left.  So we trudged about ten blocks and got to the sign that said Central Park.  It was about 11 PM.  Wife asked if we were going in.  FUCK NO!  We're here, this is close enough, let's head back.

Got a bus to Times Square, strolled through it at midnight...then took a subway back to where we were staying (place still had a manual elevator).  Come up out of the hole and ask a cop which way was whatever street it was.  He pointed without even looking at me.  Wife and I start walking.  We're going down a dark secondary street, people are outside, generally standing or sitting.  Wife is bitching about sore feet, being lost, and we're going to get mugged.  We come to a sign that say's 'Hudson River'.  Well, then, I knew we were going the wrong direction.  So we turned around and walked back to the near the corner of Park Avenue and found the hotel.

It didn't help that the Segway Tour resulted in me breaking my right big toe.

Has everyone forgot the Fast and Furious,,, my how good that fluoride works!

Gun-buyers, many of whom the feds suspected were criminals, were permitted to take firearms purchased in the U.S. and walk into Mexico without interference from agents; the intention was that once the guns were sold to powerful drug cartels, the ATF would later trace the firearms. Whistleblowers and investigators, however, found no attempt to trace the guns.

It is a horse shit post.

High crime rates were caused by lead in gasoline.  Once lead is removed from gasoline, crime drops.  It has has dropped everywhere after lead has been removed from gasoline.  Doesn't matter the country.  Remove lead from gasoline, and 18 years later, crime rates drop.  Seems low level lead poisioning causes slight brain damage which results in people losing control more easily.  Once the non-lead poisioned adolescents begin replacing poisoned children, crime starts.to go down.

That's what happened in the US.  It wasn't guns, better policing, or harsher justice that caused all crimes to go down.   It was the end of lead in gas.

Concerning guns, less Americans own them, but the people who own them own more of them.  Still has nothing to do with the crime rate.

Yeah, correlation is not causation.  When you have mutliple factors, you can look for corroborating evidence.

Like maybe, well I wonder what would happen if everywbody was armed?  Are there any countries like that?  Turns out there is, Switzerland, whcih just happens to have about the lowest crime rates of all types in the civilized world.  Waddayathink about that?

The Swiss give almost every military age person a military weapon, but keep all military ammunition locked in central locations. They also forbid keeping military ammunition in homes.

So unless you are claiming there is low crime in Switzerland because criminals might be clubbed with a military rifle, your comment makes little sense.

Exemptions for Permit Holders:  Federal law allows individuals who hold certain firearms-related permits issued by state or local governments (such as concealed weapons permits) to bypass the federally-required background check.  This exemption — the so-called “Brady exemption” — allows some prohibited persons to acquire firearms when a state permit holder falls into a prohibited category after issuance of the state permit and the state fails to immediately revoke the permit.

Scooby,

Yes it is true, it depends on the state you reside in.

CCP laws vary state to state. It's the states purview. The Feds DO NOT require someone already background checked, and  finger printed to have to go thru the BS of a a NICS check.Electronic records are illegal, as far as the ATF is concerened,on what you own, buy.

The only time they are LEGALLY supposed to take info of your purchase/s, is if it was used in a crime. The Dealers make EVERYONE fill out a 4473 Form, for every purchase. It's a hard copy and IT STAYS at that Dealer, until that dealer goes  out of business.

It's illegal for the ATF to keep electronic records of each purchase of what you purchase serial #(that's de facto registraion).

The Dealer must fill out a SECOND special form a Multiple sales report(and include it with the 4473) if anyone, anywhere buys more than one/hangun/semi auto rifle(.22cal and above) at one time.

In SC, the gun shop where you take possession of the firearm must keep a physical record (I believe it has to be electronic now) of your purchase, your name, and where you live.  So yes, when they come for the guns, they will have your address from the time when you purchased the weapon.  One can reasonably say we have registration now.  The next step will be mandating an annual inspection where the stormtroopers search your whole house as a side bonus and maybe a head shrink gives you an on-site evaluation.  We're getting close to critical decision time.  Whatcha gonna do when they come for you?!?

Though a Marine, for thirty years I declined gun ownership because I didn't want to risk an accident with my kids.  I won a Boy Scout silent auction for a 1911 model .45 pistol (one I trained with in the Marines).  I absolutely suck at pistols.  My grouping at thirty yards is paper plate sized.  Dad bought me an M-1 .30, I asked him to keep it at his house, I now have a grandson.  .45 is comfortably near, loaded.  Went to the range and still shot the ass off a fly at 100 yards.  Blew my oldest son, 12 years in Afghanistan away, he thought I was all talk.

September of this year, I bought an AR-15, dad found a bunch of 30 round magazines at a yard sale.  I'd been buying in Florida on trips to wife's family.  Now, my eyesight isn't what it used to be so I had a red dot sight installed.  I can't find my membership card to the gun range, currently, so that AR hasn't even been fired.  I recognize that I need a refresher on DOPE and the range offers that.  So that will be the first live fire of this new rifle.

I'm arming up because I'm getting old.  There was a time I had the arms of a gorilla, but getting those arms led to me now having nerve damage and constant pain.  I can no longer rip your head off and shit down your neck.

But I can hit an egg from three hundred yards with the M-1.

Maybe you are confusing your statement with: The percentage of Americans that admit they own a firearm is declining.  When cold-called by a pollster, would you tick off a list of your firearms?  Heck, even my wife has practiced her shtick so well that she can recite it while in pain.  Early last month I had to admit her to the hospital for emergency gallbladder surgery.  When the nurse ran through the questionnaire and asked about guns in the house, she rolled her eyes and said "why would I need a gun when I have 911 programmed into all of my phones?".  Gotta love a woman who can still think clearly while doubled over in agony in the ER!

What I want to know is why the murder rate skyrocketed in Mexico after the financial crisis.

Couldn't be because it became harder to export Mexico's low-IQ, violence-prone population to the States once demand for cheap day labour dried up, surely?

Or maybe Mexico started adding lead to the water supply. That's what our masters are blaming the high murder rates of the Seventies and Eighties on these days, right?

Maybe it is the fact that Mexico drug cartels supply all the drugs to the US and that trade is an enormous and corrupting influence on Mexican society.

Inflammation, causing cells to expand and then shrink/contract, leaving scar formation that is initially described as a "cyst" (as a burn would leave) is what many experts have blamed on causing our cells to go haywire.  The less cellular activity, the better.  Perfect health would be a lean body, diet that is similar and provides the necessary nutrients/minerals and calories.  Inflammation could come from infection but also water retention from high salt meal and then later, dehydration when collecting system attempts to flush this substance from body.

Add to the constant damage/repair cycle, toxic indigestable substances, fluoride, aluminum from deodorant, and god knows what else they are lacing our food/water with, and we have a literal land mine rather than a "temple" for our soul.  Experiment in a laboratory with vast sums available to fund it and the secrecy required to commit murder by proxy is what I see when I take the time to consider the whole picture.

People talk about in Soviet Russia blah blah blah.

Fact is, Russia last year dramatically liberalised gun ownership specifically to cut the murder rate. Gangs are running riot in Russia currently and by liberalising gun ownership now means anyone can own a shotgun. It's going to make the lives of gang members much shorter.

After 5 years of owning a shotgun (presumably without incident), you can buy and own a rifle. So in 5 years you're going to have a populace who have access to high powered small arms.

This isn't the act of a dictator or authoritarian btw. It's quite the opposite.

I thought this had been cleared up years ago. The crime rate dropped because all the unwanted special snowflakes got aborted.

http://freakonomics.com/2005/05/15/abortion-and-crime-who-should-you-bel...

Two very vocal critics, Steve Sailer and John Lott, have been exerting a lot of energy lately trying to convince the world that the abortion reduces crime hypothesis is not correct. A number of readers have asked me to respond to these criticisms. First, let’s start by reviewing the basic facts that support the Donohue-Levitt hypothesis that legalized abortion in the 1970s explains a substantial part of the crime decline in the 1990s:

1) Five states legalized abortion three years before Roe v. Wade. Crime started falling three years earlier in these states, with property crime (done by younger people) falling before violent crime.

2) After abortion was legalized, the availability of abortions differed dramatically across states. In some states like North Dakota and in parts of the deep South, it was virtually impossible to get an abortion even after Roe v. Wade. If one compares states that had high abortion rates in the mid 1970s to states that had low abortion rates in the mid 1970s, you see the following patterns with crime. For the period from 1973-1988, the two sets of states (high abortion states and low abortion states) have nearly identical crime patterns. Note, that this is a period before the generations exposed to legalized abortion are old enough to do much crime. So this is exactly what the Donohue-Levitt theory predicts. But from the period 1985-1997, when the post Roe cohort is reaching peak crime ages, the high abortion states see a decline in crime of 30% relative to the low abortion states. Our original data ended in 1997. If one updated the study, the results would be similar.)

3) All of the decline in crime from 1985-1997 experienced by high abortion states relative to low abortion states is concentrated among the age groups born after Roe v. Wade. For people born before abortion legalization, there is no difference in the crime patterns for high abortion and low abortion states, just as the Donohue-Levitt theory predicts.

4) When we compare arrest rates of people born in the same state, just before and just after abortion legalization, we once again see the identical pattern of lower arrest rates for those born after legalization than before.

5) The evidence from Canada, Australia, and Romania also support the hypothesis that abortion reduces crime.

6) Studies have shown a reduction in infanticide, teen age drug use, and teen age childbearing consistent with the theory that abortion will reduce other social ills similar to crime.
