Partner Of "China's Carl Icahn" Executed By Local Police After Attempting Escape Following Insider Trading Charges

Tyler Durden's picture

The name of Shanghai's Xu Xiang is not a household name in US financial circles. It is in China.

According to a recent profile in Want China Times (as of May 2014) Xiang, who heads the Shanghai-based Zexi Investment (founded in 2009 and since then generating literally impossible returns) is not only one of the richest Chinese investors, but has been called anything from China's "Warren Buffett" to China's "Carl Icahn." He also has a reputation of being an activist within China's stock market. To wit from May 2014:

The major players in China's capital market, including equity fund and insurance asset management firms, are gearing up to secure seats as members on the boards of directors in listed companies in a bid to influence these firms to give dividends, putting profit into their own pockets, according to Guangzhou's Time Weekly. According to the newspaper Xu Xiang, head of Shanghai-based Zexi Investment, is one among these market players in China.

Xu, from Ningbo in eastern China's Zhejiang province, built his wealth from scratch through investments in the secondary capital market. Xu set up Zexi Investment in 2010 and gained a good reputation as a profit maker in the Chinese equity fund market. The fund is reported to currently manage more than 10 billion yuan (US$1.6 billion).

A statistics report on the Shanghai stock exchange revealed that Zexi Investment has raised its stakes in several listed companies, including in conglomerate Ningbo United Group, since the beginning of this year. Xu's investments have made Zexi more visible in the Chinese capital market.

The newspaper reported that Xu's strategy is not unusual in the US market and is similar to that of Warren Buffett, a prominent US equity investor, although this style is not often seen in China. The report said it is believed that more and more Chinese investors will follow Xu's example by getting selected as members of the board of directors in listed companies to influence the companies.

A manager in an equity fund firm, who declined to be named, told Time Weekly that Zexi had tried the same technique previously with Sino Life Insurance and Anbang Insurance Group. The fund manager suggested that insurance asset management companies invest in the secondary market.

Xu has been called the Chinese version of American investor Carl Icahn. Icahn, 77, has repeatedly made his presence felt in the equity market, boosting his stakes in several major firms on Wall Street, such as Dale, Apple, and eBay.

Zexi also appeared in US mainstream news late last week, as a result of Bloomberg's report that while China's stock market was crashing, "the country’s top 10 performers, run by Ze Quan Investment, Sunrise Investment, Zexi Investment and Yingyang Asset Management, found gains in the June-August period." As the following Bloomberg chart shows, four of Zexi's funds were among the top 10 performing hedge funds from June to August.

It gets better: according to Zexi's own website, the return of its various funds since 2010 is as high as a mindblowing 3944.9%!

And then, perhaps related to Zexi's tremendous outperformance, Xu's name once again emerged late on Sunday in China, because as China's Global Times reported, "Xu Xiang, general manager of the Shanghai-based company Zexi Investment, is under investigation for suspected inside trading, the Ministry of Public Security announced late Sunday."

Xu and several others allegedly obtained inside stocks information via illegal methods and participated in insider trading and manipulating stocks prices, a ministry statement said.

The suspects have been placed under coercive measures, which include summons by force, bail, residential surveillance, detention and arrest.

That is all the pithy announcement by the People's Daily-affiliated newspaper had about the unexpected arrest of one of China's capital markets scions over "insider trading" charges.

Ok, this is China: crazy things happen all the time. But where things got outright ridiculous, was when moments ago when as China National Radio reports, Wu Shuang, a partner of Xu Xiang's at Zexi, and also an insider trading suspect, was shot and killed by Chinese police when he "resisted and tried to escape." The complete, google-translated brief note:

Further investigation by the Ministry of Public Security, Xu Xiang criminal gang suspected of insider trading and other offenses are criminal detention. A member of their criminal group Wu Shuang tried to resist escape, the police shot on the spot.

And that was it.

In fact, that was not even it, because moments after the report (which had been corroborated by Bloomberg) was released, CNR promptly 404'ed the entire story.

And that's not all: moments ago Bloomberg also reported that Shanghai police just raided Zexi Investment's Shanghai office on Sunday, "taking away computers and other materials, according to a person familiar with the matter, in the latest attempt by Chinese authorities to crack down on strategies blamed for exacerbating a $5 trillion stock-market rout."

So what is the fate of Wu Shuang, or billionaire Xu Xiang for that matter? We probably will never know, although we have a feeling that a slot for China's "next Carl Icahn" has just opened, especially since as of right now, trying to open the non-cached version of the Zexi Fund (the cached one can still be found here), has just been 503'ed, a fate we are certain has befallen its executives as well.

One thing to know about China's corruption culture: This is not an impartial justice system looking for criminals. This is another insider covering his tracks and/or consolidating his empire by bumping competition.

could it be these guys were involved in what may well have been a u.s. instigateed pump and dump via derivatives of the chinese stock market?  they don't just do it to their own citizens you know.

if the u.s. government is capable of what they do to the gold market, what aren't they capable of doing to their "enemies"?  maybe it's time for some rethinking.  the following is called imagine and i got it off washingtonsblog.

“We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal… governments are instituted among men, deriving their powers from the consent of the governed; that whenever any form of government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the right of the people to alter or abolish it and to institute new government, laying its foundation on such principles…”

The above is a portion of the Declaration of Independence, written by Thomas Jefferson.

We submit the following facts to the citizens of the United States.

The government of the United States has been a Totalitarian Oligarchy since the military financial aristocracy destroyed the Democratic Republic on November 22, 1963, when they assassinated the last democratically elected president, John Fitzgerald Kennedy, and overthrew his government. All following governments have been unconstitutional frauds. Attempts by Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther King to restore the Republic were interrupted by their murder.

A subsequent 12 year colonial war against Vietnam, conducted by the murderers of Kennedy, left 2 million dead in a wake of napalm and burning villages.

In 1965, the U.S. government orchestrated the slaughter of 1 million unarmed Indonesian civilians.

In the decade that followed the CIA murdered 100,000 Native Americans in Guatemala.

In the 1970s, the Oligarchy began the destruction and looting of America’s middle class, by encouraging the export of industry and jobs to parts of the world where workers were paid bare subsistence wages. The long decline of the local economy has led to the political decline of the working class, as well as the decay of cities, towns, and infrastructure, such as education.

The impoverishment of America’s middle class has undermined the nation’s financial stability. Without a productive foundation, the government has accumulated a huge debt of $trillions of dollars. Adding to the debt, the so-called ‘Bailout’ of the nation’s Bankers has looted America’s workers of another $13trillion. This debt will have to be paid, or suffered by future generations. Concurrently, the top 1% of the nation’s population has benefited enormously from the discomfiture of the rest. Additionally, the interest rate has been reduced to 0, thereby slowly robbing millions of depositors of their savings, as their savings cannot stay even with the inflation rate.

The government spends the declining national wealth on bloody and never ending military adventures, and is or has recently conducted unconstitutional wars against 9 nations. The oligarchs maintain 700 military bases in 131 countries; they spend more on military weapons of terror than the rest of the nations of the world combined. Tellingly, more than half the government budget is spent on the military and 16 associated secret agencies.

The nightmare of a powerful centralized government crushing the rights of the people, so feared by the Founders of the United States, has become a reality. The government of Obama/Biden, as with previous administrations such as Bush/Cheney, operates a Gulag of dozens of concentration camps, where prisoners are denied trials, and routinely tortured. The Patriot Act and the National Defense Authorizations Act, enacted by both Democratic and Republican factions of the oligarchy, serve to establish a legal cover for their terror.

The nation’s media is controlled, and, with the school systems, serve to brainwash the population; elections are won by the gang that spends the most money, and the people are intimidated and treated with contempt.

Part 2 of above response to Ann:

How can we fix this mess? We suggest 2 steps.

First: We recommend Alternate Elections be held wherever possible with the intent of establishing Alternate (DUAL POWER) Government Foci. The day of the one dimensional twin political party (gang) scam) should be over. The Democrat and Republican gangs and their phony political posturing resemble that of the professional wrestlers on TV. They put on a show. They are well paid for their efforts. And, after the show, they retire to the showers (Skull and Bones?) for a couple of laughs and good sex.

Instead of a silly, and relatively harmless show (from the professional wrestlers, We The People receive ruinous Wars, a terrible economy, and the death of our Liberty from the paid servants of the Oligarchs.

No money will be allowed to be spent in our elections, and paper ballots will be used throughout. We urge the following points:

1. The right of those who wish to work to employment at a living wage.

2. The right to a place to live at a fair price.

3. Legalize drugs.

4. Free all non-violent drug and alcohol related prisoners.

5. Bring all Troops home.

6. Assert American Independence and National Sovereignty from Israel (no further financing of their economy and military).

7. Former Congressman Ron Paul and former President Jimmy Carter to head American Foreign Policy.

8. Those responsible for the murders on 9/11 must be arrested and put on trial.

Second: our existing Constitution must be respected and supported. Later, when our revolutionary government takes the stage of history, and if our next generation desire, they have the right to alter, or completely repeal the old constitution as they see fit.

Thomas Jefferson favored the continual renewal of the American Revolution by each new generation creating a new constitution (and, thereby, a new constitutional government). This process would empower the new generations and serve to revive the quality of government in a process of Permanent Revolution. Jefferson wrote:

“Every constitution then, and every law, naturally expires at the end of 19 years. If it be enforced longer, it is an act of force, and not of right. It may be said that the succeeding generation exercising in fact the power of repeal, this leaves them as free as if the constitution or law had been expressly limited to 19 years only.”

Jefferson further explained his approach to the next generation in his letter to James Madison:

“I set out on this ground, which I suppose to be self evident, ‘that the earth belongs in usufruct to the living’:”

“Then I say the earth belongs to each of these generations, during it’s course, fully, and in their own right. The 2d. Generation receives it clear of the debts and incumberances of the 1st. The 3d of the 2d. and so on. For if the 1st. Could charge it with a debt, then the earth would belong to the dead and not the living generation.”

In 2016, Thomas Jefferson, the theoretician of the first American Revolution, would insist that the newest citizens, through self empowerment, must clean the stables and resurrect a new Republican government that will restore our freedoms and an economy of prosperity and social justice, for the long overdue second American Revolution.

The next generation may write a new constitution, establishing a less powerful government which will ensure President Franklin Roosevelt’s Four Freedoms, freedom of speech and expression, freedom to worship God in ones own way, freedom from want “which…means economic understandings which will secure to every nation a healthy peace time life for its inhabitants…” and freedom from fear “which…means a world-wide reduction of armaments…”

Students working on state levels can form Committees of Correspondence which will write and conduct a statewide vote upon each new constitution. Then, these committees can select representatives who will convene on a national level and write a constitution that will be presented, through a nationwide referendum, to all citizens of the United States to adopt, or reject.

Once adopted: The new constitution will become the law of the land and of a free people. They will establish a new government, continue to arrest criminal politicians of the old tyrannical oligarchy, and, in short, help to repair the damage of the previous totalitarian governments.

Why would a debt to criminals have to be payed?  It makes no sense to claim to have a plan to take down these crooks, start a completely new Government with new representatives and laws that protect The People...

and then tell The People, by the way, you still owe trillions to the guys we just put in jail, or hung!??

"1. The right of those who wish to work to employment at a living wage."

a job is a right in your new age?  A right dictated by who, the Government?  I'll pass....

"2. The right to a place to live at a fair price."

A home is an asset earned not a right passed out by Government!  The Government's only rightful involvement is assuring we live in a land where the property I've earned is not taken by those who have no rightful claim to it.

3. Legalize drugs.

4. Free all non-violent drug and alcohol related prisoners.

On legalizing drugs, would that include legalizing all prescription drugs to be sold to anyone without a prescription or Doctor's involvement?  Including Psychotropic drugs for youth?  Does that mean the CEOs who push these drugs on our youth have no worry of being held accountable, since we're freeing all the inmates?

5. Bring all Troops home.

AMEN!

6. Assert American Independence and National Sovereignty from Israel (no further financing of their economy and military).

If this includes all foreign aid from US tax money I agree.  If your only singling out Israel then your motives are political and not pure.  I say, no further financing of  anyone's economy and military but our own, and that to defend our borders alone.

7. Former Congressman Ron Paul and former President Jimmy Carter to head American Foreign Policy.

What kind of banana republic dictates who will run our foreign policy, as if these men will live forever, or even want the job?  Jimmy Carter, really?

8. Those responsible for the murders on 9/11 must be arrested and put on trial.

And what of those responsible for the Korean War, Vietnam, Iraq, etc? justice for 9/11 wouldn't be the panacea for the injustices of wars.  9/11 is just one more of a long list of the smoke and mirrors used to justify killing People in foreign wars.  The only solution to war is the end of secret Government agencies and secretive back room deals.  ALL Government actions must be done in full view of the public eye!

And the worst idea of the lot....
“Every constitution then, and every law, naturally expires at the end of 19 years. If it be enforced longer, it is an act of force, and not of right..."

This solution can come only from a person who has no understanding of the concept of natural law.  Laws given by God cannot expire, EVER!

This is the worst thought out plan I've ever read!

Perhaps all the China lovers here will sooner or later realize their huge mistake in blindly following a brutal and murderous regime, only because they are frustrated with the FED and the fact that their gold hasn't risen north of the $5000 that they were 'promised' by KWN/Schiff/Maloney/Celente.

Seriously though, you have misinterpreted my post. Since you are demanding I be politically correct and "inclusive," then yes, super-strictly speaking, anywhere you see someone who appears to be part of the elite getting whacked, it isn't justice so much as a scapegoat/ridding of competition/ etc. I mention China specifically because the article is about China, I have a lot of time invested in my local Chinese community, and the comment I made is the comment they make when this kind of news comes around.

The ChiCom round would seem to possibly leave a better chance for survival for future "enhanced interrogation."

Who went to Brazil????

I think you are just making shit up based upon something you've heard but don't really remember.

One of the "founders" of FecesBook, Eduardo Saverin was from Brazil and went to college in the US and got his US citizenship. Then he moved to Singapore in 2009. In 2012 he renounced his citizenship and basically said he has no interest in returning to the US.

Also, he is a tribe member for those who care.

And wasn't Mr. Schiff "part of the tribe" as well?

Please don't insult our intelligence.  Many average Jews have no idea of the actions of their more criminal elements.  Granted, these honest Jews refuse to acknowledge the nefarious actions and history of their tribe members, as it affects their self identity.

In other words, it is the extremely brave Jew who walks away, and even more brave who turns to face the immorality and psychopathy resident within their community head on.  These people are to be applauded.

With regards to Schiff, one also has to consider his namesake and polar opposite who helped fund the 1912 takedown of America.  This included the 16'th ammendment - taxation.

So, extreme irony and symmetry:  An honest Jew against income taxes, which was introduced as a backstop to private credit banking; and his bankster ancestors funded the takedown.

Remember TARP... the taxpayers via income taxes, were put on the hook to bail out the private credit emitting banks.

religion, is only as good as it is believed or, really perhaps, true…

I’d like to think I would be the last to advocate for “religion”, but what I will offer for consideration is the radical difference in physical appearance and recognition of persons on their deathbed as Coast has alluded to.  According to the Christ, there are only 2 ways to die, either “die in one’s sins” or “die in the Lord”.

It is beyond dispute that when individuals actually face the one act of which there are no mulligans, there are absolute differences of peace versus uncertainty, regret, denial, fear and many other “negative” physical responses. Those who have purposefully decided to seriously consider their own personal demise are unfortunately viewed by many as engaging in an unfitting and useless daily contemplation.

They’re charged with being morbid or preoccupied with fantasy when paradoxically, quite the opposite is true.  Those with a hardy grasp of the uncertainty of life and prepare for their own personal and unavoidable demise are more clearly recognized as logically minded, artful, balanced and forward looking / constructive.  Being "virtuous" is, at best, a mere by product of the process.

These are factual observations by those present with another human being at the moment of physical death and the notes are irrefutable.

“Our people die well”.   John Wesely

until we see a prosecution of some people in the USA for the 2008 crash, the general population has every right to believe there will be another incident.

I don't know about any of you but myself and plenty I know simply have boarded funds away rather than spend and invest in real companies because we have no faith that illegal financials in the USA will ever be actually criminal.

It may sound strange to say this, but my contribution to GDP has slowed simply because I am saving for the expectation of another crash.

If there had been prosecutions and criminal proceedings it would have served to show there was an incentive ve not to create a crash and thus I would feel freer to spend.

My sentiments multiplied by 50 million adds up to the economy being held back.
