In "Ultimate Betrayal" After Massive Manhunt, Illinois Cop's Death A "Carefully Staged Suicide"
The Illinois cop, whose death sparked a massive manhunt in September, fatally shot himself in a "carefully staged suicide" after committing "extensive criminal acts," police said Wednesday according to NBC News. Initially hailed as a hero after his death, Fox Lake, Illinois, police Lt. Joe Gliniewicz is now likely to be remembered by another label: a betrayer. As the local police commander told CNN, the officer placed his equipment at the scene in an "attempt to mislead first responders and investigators to believe this was a homicide," and far from being a hero, Gliniewicz "committed the ultimate betrayal" with his actions over the past several years which included stealing and laundering money from a program that mentored young people.
Gliniewicz's death on Sept. 1 has been shrouded in mystery and become fodder for conspiracy theorists as police released limited information, saying they didn't want to compromise the investigation. As NBC News reported,
When the Lake County coroner released new details a week after the shooting — that he couldn't rule out a suicide and Gliniewicz died from "a single devastating gunshot wound" — authorities blasted him publicly for being "irresponsible."
Police had released this much: Gliniewicz was patrolling a remote area of Fox Lake when the officer saw three men and stopped to question them at 7:52 a.m. He radioed for backup about three minutes later, with the trio described as two white males and one black male.
But by the time other officers arrived, Gliniewicz was found dead at the scene. In less than 15 minutes, the men managed to vanish on foot, police said.
...
Last month, following a massive manhunt that at its height included several SWAT teams, federal agents and helicopters, Lake County officials said that they were continuing to treat his death as a homicide — although other possibilities were still on the table.
Meanwhile, Gliniewicz — nicknamed "G.I. Joe." — was remembered by mourners as a married father of four, dedicated to his job and mentoring youth through the Explorers program.
"When we were growing up, we always knew he was a hero — but now the whole nation knows him as a hero," his brother, Micheal Gliniewicz, said at his funeral.
Not so much any more (as CNN reports)... What once appeared to be the killing of an officer in the line of duty turns out to have been "a carefully staged suicide," George Filenko, Lake County Major Crimes Task Force commander, said Wednesday.
"This staged suicide was the end result of extensive criminal acts that Gliniewicz had been committing," Filenko said, announcing the conclusions of the investigation into the officer's September 1 death.
Gliniewicz was under increasing levels of stress from scrutiny into what the investigators found to be criminal activity, Filenko said.
The officer had been stealing and laundering money from a police department program that mentored young people hoping to become law enforcement officers, Filenko said. Gliniewicz, a leader in that program, had been stealing money for at least seven years, he said.
The investigation found that the officer -- who had experience creating mock crime scenes -- staged his suicide to make it look like a homicide.
The officer placed his equipment at the scene in an "attempt to mislead first responders and investigators to believe this was a homicide," Filenko said.
The initial assumptions shifted when investigators "didn't see anything to indicate there was a struggle physically" in the officer's death, Filenko said.
Investigators then found that the village of Fox Lake, north of Chicago, had started "a thorough internal audit of all of their assets" that Gliniewicz was concerned might unearth proof of his illicit financial activities, Filenko said.
The investigation indicates at least two others were involved in criminal activity, though that inquiry is ongoing, and police are not commenting further for now, he said.

Not exactly helping the cause of the 'American police states enforcers' public relations efforts as the local police commander concludes,
Far from being a hero, Gliniewicz "committed the ultimate betrayal" with his actions over the past several years, Filenko said. "He behaved for years in a manner completely contrary to the image he portrayed."

Wow, a cop who lies and steals money.
Imagine that. Well he didn't lie after he was dead, someone else initially did.
Think about that, America. Do you have a job where your co-workers will still lie for you, even after you die?
(Guillotine qualification)
Too bad bankers and politicians dont have the balls to do the same.
The only difference is that their families are well provided for, because the stealing part of the job is officially, as opposed to tacitly, praised.
A good Yahoo story. ZH, not so much
No, an excellent ZH story. ZH is a system-level appraisal of the state of our civilization. It isn't doing so well, it is failing in all walks of life to sustain us economically and socially-emotionally at some levels between caveman and sophisticate. We know both of those statements are true because so many people are failing.
Civilizations fail one individual at a time. We want to blame all the failures on individuals or cultures or 'the kind of people who go into that profession' or 'them', but people are people.
These are all measures of our civilization failing, one individual at a time.
Saving yourself requires saving your community, that is most of what has been lost. Fix that, and the rest will return.
All the bullshit hero-worship... you think any of it will be retracted? The meme about cops being under attack by civilians? Nope. I would be very surprised if this makes the evening news.
"The officer had been stealing and laundering money from a police department program that mentored young people hoping to become law enforcement officers"
i don't see the problem here - he was giving an accuate portrayal to the young people as to what being a cop is, how else are they going to learn?
A good Yahoo story. ZH, not so much
Wiping of the rear end with the Constitution is always an appropriate ZH story. Or did you not know about the mandatory house to house searches? No? Then shut up.
A crooked cop who lied about his death, he doesn't deserve any headlines. And yeah, i'll shut up for your sake.
Exactly.... and why I no longer give to police / law enforcement charities cold calling.
Kind of disgusting them asking for donations from those they rob using unlawful asset forfeiture laws and worse, consider their enemy.
I like the phone calls from supposedly the "Law Enforcement Benfit Fund" asking for money. I tell them to mail their request and of course, they never do since it's all a scam.
Next to the Nigerian banker scams this is pretty good.
Ask the callers how much goes to the charity......If they're honest they will tell you about 20%
When I was reading it, I was asking whether insurance money was part of the goal?
Not covered.
Another example only 'folks' with badges should have a monopoly on deadly force.
Just think of how many of the "usual suspects" that were rounded up, slapped around and civil rights that were boot stomped coming to this conclusion.
We wronged some folks.
To Profit and Self-Serve.
"Wow, a cop who lies and steals money." -
Yeah, he should have been a banker or CEO. Free John Corzine!
Oh wait, nevermind.
moral hazard is a real motherfucker.
"Wow, a cop who lies and steals money."
I'm sure it was just limited to only those infractions as well. Speaking of which, are all the area hookers present and accounted for?
...and who has experience creating mock crime scenes. Useful skills in the USSA.
Maybe, he was distraught that Umpqua won the latest contract?
He went full-jarhead with that idiotic hairstyle--no wonder he killed himself...
Really is sad. This was all over chicago news and he ends up killing himself. Just a sad waste of department resources.
What is SAD is why chicagoans haven't over run that black site..
He needed a Job at the Fed, not offing himself..
So, does this still count as a statistic for "the war on police" and / or "gun violence"?
Military Suicides.
Just another cop killing...
Yes he died in the line of duty.,.as a HERO...someone to be looked up at...and respected.
Now get back to work and forget about it. We can depend on all of you to do that, can't we?
Or do you need those red lights in yer rear view mirror?
The red lights are only the warm-up. You forgot the high-intensity-super-duper-highbeams that blind your eyes.
He looks like the gym teacher from Beavis and Butthead.

Far from being a hero, Bernanke, Yellen, Draghi...... "committed the ultimate betrayal" with his actions over the past several years,Filenko said. "He behaved for years in a manner completely contrary to the image he portrayed."
he stole for seven years without getting caught. it's easy to see why shitcago is going broke.
Chicago cops, lol. Didn't this guy get the memo that he could just shakedown the average Joe instead of dipping into the company fund?
"stealing and laundering money from a program that mentored young people."
He could easily have gotten a job at the Federal Government. This is like a prerequisite. How many kids could have gotten mentored for the $800 million the DOD "lost"? Every kid in America, Canada, and Mexico for 10 years, that's how many.
That's assuming those managing the programs are all honest folk..... like us.
Seems he was trying to support his family in these crazy times. So it was reclassified as Bernanke assisted suicide?
Hmm, I wonder if there is a correlation between Illinois insolvency and almost to retirement suiciders.
"stealing"? money laundering? Whatever, free John Corzine!
oh wait, nevermind...
""He behaved for years in a manner completely contrary to the image he portrayed."
Missed his calling... should have been a politician of the bankster class. No worries of going to jail,,, maybe even awarded by being appointed to a Federal Reserve position.
Or he was "suicided". As corrupt as that area of the world is, anything is possible.
Perhaps...could be that he wasn't the only one w his hand in the cookie jar and was threatening to squeal on his fellow swine. I find it hard to believe he's the only one who was skimming.
Correct, there never is "just one" cochroach.
Good point. This guy took two shots to the chest. I've got to imagine that's not easy to do to yourself while covering up the evidence of a suicide.
He placed it to go through a part of his body where it wouldn't be fatal. He wanted to make it look like there was a struggle for his gun.
I believe the chief of police resigned two days before the officer killed himself. There are very strong indications that there is a network of graft in this department.
This is not confined to Fox Lake. Traffic ticket relief for "insiders" is being investigated in a police district just up the road. More to follow.
Think of the tens, if not hundreds of thousands of dollars wasted trying to find his phantom 3 killers. It went on for weeks, even though many retired officers were screaming he killed himself.
So they were covering for the chief. Time to fire a bunch of gimme pigs.
But WE NEED Police for "Law and Order..." hmm, lemme check my premises...
I find it hard to believe he's the only one who was skimming.
The article says that 2 others are under investigation...
Shockingly after playing up this incident as caused by the "war on cops", there is no mention of the truth on Drudge or Breitbart....shocking.
Scum bags Cop, people get killed everyday and none of what took place happens to " Regular " people, a massive law suit should be taken from all those who rights were violated from these scum bag cops.
But those local cops would have assassinated anyone fitting the initial description had they sighted them.
Greed got the better of him but he couldn't face the shame of it all. A common story that almost anyone could identify with. He was killed by his fully functioning but damaged conscience. A tragedy.
What? The guy shot himself twice in the chest and there's no mention of ballistics evidence. That sure smells funny.
To protect and to serve.
Themselves and the other copgang members.
Just another dirty cop. Yawn. So what else is new?
If Obama had a son...

Should of had more (or any) checks and balances on the money of this program.
Its sad all around

90% Nonwhite Violent Crime Rate: FBIhttp://newobserveronline.com/90-nonwhite-violent-crime-rate-fbi/
Nonwhite Crime Apocalypse Envelops New York City"New York City is now a crime-ridden hell where nonwhites commit 95% of all murders, 90% of all rapes, 90% of Felony Sex Crimes, 96% of all robberies, 91% of all Felonious Assaults, 90% of all Grand Larceny offenses, 86% of all Misdemeanor Sex Crimes, 90% of all Misdemeanor Assault and Related offenses, 87% of all Petit Larceny offenses, 84% of all Misdemeanor Criminal Mischief offenses, 96.6% of all Shooting offenses, and constitute 90.8% of all firearm arrests, 86.3% of all Drug Felony arrests, 82.3% of all Felony Stolen Property arrests, and 94.5% of all Felony and Misdemeanor Complaint Records with Identified Juvenile Victims, Suspects and Arrestees—all this according to official figures released by the New York City Police Department."
"The figures, contained in the latest “Crime and Enforcement Activity in New York City” report issued by the NYPD, which covers the dates January 1 to June 30, 2013, can be found on the New York Government website here (PDF)."
"The “White” statistics are, of course, distorted, as the authorities classify Middle Easterners, Arabs and others as “white” or “Caucasian” as well, in line with Federal guidelines. Once this erroneous classification is removed from the equation, the “White” crime rate will be even lower than stated."

Wow, slavery sure does have long-lasting blowback. NYC is being punished for the sins of their great-great-etc grandparents. I guess thats why its a bad idea to socially accept obviously wrongful behavior, kind of like how people steal from each other calling it taxation and then go on thinking there will be no negative consequences.
Those ex-slaves committing crime even at their age? Wow, just wow!
And .07% of the White Collar Crime, at least the uncharged crimes.
Winning!
We have all grown up on cop shows with strange twists. The thing I find interesting is that according to an earlier story this dead cop was supposed to have retired a month before and was asked to stay on for another month (by the mayor???? not sure.) ... why?
Was he asked to stay on so that he could be framed for the theft and laundering of money and to take heat off of the real criminals? He could have simply retired, but he did not.
How hard is it for someone in power in the police department to frame someone for something they did not do then murder them to make it look like a suicide? How hard is it then to stop any investigations that led away from the patsy as the guilty one? The dead guy cannot defend himself. How convenient. If it was not a suicide, then certainly it looks like the murder would have been committed by the guilty ones within the department and that would have to have included the person who asked him not to retire... unless someone else put him up to asking for him not to retire.
Then again, maybe this was not a made for TV drama with twists.
Some anon on another site said the scuttlebutt according to lawyers around town is that he was about to implicate the chief in the whole scam, and there were several other accomplices.
Truth is indeed stranger than Fiction!
I'm sure it is just coincidence that this story headlines on MSM 9 weeks and 1 day after it occurred on 9/1.
