Visualizing Where The Money's Made In America

Tyler Durden's picture

The U.S. Department of Commerce and its Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) recently released its statistics on gross domestic product (GDP) by metropolitan area for 2014. The BEA determines the statistics for each metropolitan area as the sum of the GDP originating in all industries in the area. The data is the sub-state counterpart of the nationwide GDP. It is the most comprehensive measure of economic activity.

HowMuch.net built a map to provide a 3D visualization of the GDP by metropolitan area, seen below. The higher the cone rising out of the map, the greater the GDP in that area. In analyzing the data, we found that the top 20 metropolitan areas represent over 52% of the total GDP in the United States. GDP grew 2.3% for all metropolitan areas in 2014, after increasing 1.9% in 2013.

As shown by the map, the New York metropolitan area, which includes Newark and Jersey City,lead the country with $1.5 trillion in GDP. The area had GDP growth of 2.4% in 2014. The New York metropolitan area provided almost 10% of the total GDP for the entire country.

The Greater Los Angeles area was second with $866 billion in GDP, with an increase of 2.3% over 2013. This was followed by the Chicago metropolitan area with $610 billion and growth of 1.8%. In fourth was the Houston metro area with $525 billion. Dallas, another Texas metro area, had $504 billion in GDP.

GDP By State

We also broke down the GDP by state. We calculated that the top 5 states contributed 40% of the overall GDP for the United States as follows:

  • California: $2.11 trillion, 13% of overall GDP

  • Texas: $1.46 trillion, 9.5% of overall GDP

  • New York: $1.28 trillion, 8.4% of overall GDP

  • Florida: $769 billion, 4.8% of overall GDP.

  • Illinois: $680 billion, 4.3% of overall GDP.

Effect of Population

One important factor for GDP appears to be the population for both the state and the metropolitan areas. New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas and Houston are the five most densely populated metropolitan areas in that order. Further, California, Texas and New York have the highest populations by state in that order. There appears to be a relationship between GDP output and the population for a geographical area.

The Final Analysis

The largest metropolitan areas contributed the greatest amount of GDP for the country. According to our analysis, the top 20 metropolitan areas contributed over half of the United State’s GDP. The New York metropolitan area contributed nearly 10% to the GDP by itself. In terms of a breakdown by state, the top 5 states contributed around 40% of the entire country’s GDP. California alone contributed over 13% of the total GDP for the country.

I take exception to the statement: "The largest metropolitan areas contributed the greatest amount of GDP for the country."

To rephrase properly: "The largest metropolitan areas sucked up the greatest amount of GDP for the country."

...and another gem:  There appears to be a relationship between GDP output and the population for a geographical area.  Now there's analysis worthy of any 8 year old.  "...appears to be..."  How 'bout there IS a relationship?  Did this cost any of my tax money (not that I pay any)?

"Where The Money's Made"

"California: $2.11 trillion, 13% of overall GDP"

The next time you fucking trailer-park "Mid-west" slackers who reap the majority of "tax" dollars ...cry about the "niggers" and "Mexicans"...take a look at your fucking myopic, white-ass mirror (if trailers have them)!!!!!

"Amerikka" is poor, white trash.

When the fuck are you ever willing to admit it, and become something else?

Fighting each other ("niggers" and "Mexicans") is what the rich want...you give it to them.

You can "learn" and rise above and help take this NWO out.

The planet is only 49% "Caucasian" (including Asians, who identify as "white")....WTFU....

isn't this a situation that calls for a break-up of the dollar into regional currencies? or is it only when it's the eurozone?

For once I totally agree with you Ghordius.

The dollar is as artificial a homogenization of economic activity as the euro, and equally destructive to prosperity. Only sound money can bring prosperity back to the world and the way to do that is to let the free market and it's participants CHOOSE their preferred form of money/currency.

Such choices tend to gravitate towards things that hold their value over long periods of time and are not continually debased "for our own good."

Most big cities are simply the focus point of wealth. Large corporations reside there, but many times the actual production and consumption are spread over much wider areas. Houston is a big GDP spike, but how much of that "wealth" is actually generated in the oil fields hundreds or even thousands of miles away?

This graphic isn't very helpful.  To fix the graphic, make it in the form of a topographic graphic (on top of real topography) with altitude at any point being:

altitude = productive_GDP / population;

One could make another graphic based upon:

altitude = destructive_GDP / population;

And another graphic based upon:

altitude = GDP / population;

-----

Note: any wasteful production should be part of destructive_GDP.

Obviously most military and government expenses are destructive_GDP, and ALL transfer of wealth is waste... destructive waste.  Anyone who believes moving a dollar from one [more-deserving] pocket into another [less-deserving] pocket has no idea what production or product mean.

You are correct.
Europe is reaping what they have sown: girly men that no real woman with a brain will choose to marry and have children with. The men have idealized the women into harpies and the women have molded the men into soft metrosexuals. There is plenty of that happening in the USA: thank you feminists.
But I digress. The meaningless of the information above and the pretty topo map created to give a visual is but another reason to despair.
It doesn't take a brain surgeon to understand that an area with a large population making X dollars can be represented as making "more" than a far less populated area with the population making 2X.
Unless the author can express the information in a per capita manner and exclude monies from governmental sources, it is as useless as the manure pile behind the barn.
Oops, that manure pile has real value, unlike the imaginary value banksters assign to the bullshit they create.
I hope all the soft city boys continue to fly over.

Not a surprise of a handful of less than 500 cities across the globe propped up by Predators are all you need. Many hinterlands can be wastelands and really do not matter when you transact in and direct thru the virtual space. Stage One, you keep the noisy preys in cages (prisons) and Stage Two, you just take no prisoners. Some of these cities will be watering holes for the cronies for the conveniences of the Oligrachs and will be heavily guarded.Some of these cronies are on furloughs from their duties in outposts (strategic sea ports, warehouses of physical wealth, etc). Some versions of Israel today with its settlements going global. McKinsey sells this without the ugly fringe ghettos. So research and fly to where your talents should be. I'm guessing rents have a lot to do with the lopsided numbers.  I live in a pretty small city...a NY apartment that runs $2000 or more probably goes for $500-$600 here.  It provides the exact same thing (except it's probably safer here) and yet NY gets 4X or more credit as far as the GDP counters are concerned.  Same thing in a lot of other areas of spending.  I like it here better though...I can drive 10 minutes and I'm in endless fields of corn and beans, and I personally know farmers who I could buy stuff from directly if I really had to.

These leeches have no clue . A hard days work, a piece of ass and a quart of beer would kill most city dwellers.
Truck drivers move our country. JIT delivery relies on perfect function of our roads and rails and air. Take those away for three days and you will find out exactly who does the producing and production of what.
When that does happen , EBT shut off perhaps nationwide, I think you don't want to be near any one of those awesome production centers.

True that if you halt all JIT delivery there will be immediate chaos.  But - the system will correct itself and function fine yet again, like it used to before JIT.  The initial period of chaos won't be armageddon like some think. Things will get done and problems will get solved and not by the govt which only creates problems.  Of course truck drivers will play a huge role in the problem solving.
