Why America’s Land of the Free Title Was Just Revoked

The Land of the Free — America has just been stripped of its favorite longstanding self-designation — the official title of ‘Land of the Free’ now belongs to its neighbor to the north, Canada.
In fact, the Legatum Institute’s 2015 Prosperity Index found Canadians experience the greatest personal freedom and general social tolerance of all 142 nations in the report — while the U.S. trailed behind in ninth place. But that’s only part of the story.
Regarding the feeling of safety and security, America fell two spots from last year’s embarrassing rank to 33rd on the list — landing literally just ahead of the United Arab Emirates and Kuwait.
According to Foreign Policy’s Siobhán O’Grady:
“Americans fear more for their safety each day than people living in Egypt, Bangladesh, and Sudan — countries that suffer from regular terrorist attacks, civil unrest, and war.
“Just what exactly Americans have to be so scared about isn’t exactly clear [… ] And while 17 percent had property stolen in 2014, that was still below the global average of 17.5 percent.”
O’Grady’s tongue-in-cheek query sharply derides Americans’ unfortunate, gullible tendencies to believe whatever subject or object the government deems must be the target for fear. In many ways, the Legatum report proves fear-mongering works.
If all of this weren’t sufficient to prove the freedom in which Americans ostensibly bask remains little more than illusion, the U.S. stood alone among Western nations with high levels of State-sponsored violence — right in line with Saudi Arabia and the Ukraine.
Legatum suggested recent uprisings in Ferguson and Baltimore were the reason for this startling comparison, though the general rise in police violence coupled with an astonishing lack of accountability shouldn’t be ignored.
Canada’s actual tolerance and freedom could be a lesson for U.S. politicians who insist on touting the tired Land of the Free moniker — especially now that it no longer applies.

In canada you can travel freely without being strip searched by the TFSA. I recall a time in the 1930's when you needed papers to tarvel as well. How do you like that freedom?

Canadian here, I have a Glock 22, a Berett FS92, S&W 100 th aniversery 1911, an M4, M305, SKS, Savage 110 BA in .338 LM, a Savage 110BA in .300 wm. Norinco type 97 bullpup. and assorted other firearms. Tell me again how Canadians can't have firearms. You do however have to take a safety course and pass background checks.

Canada's Canadian Broadcasting Corporation [CBC] does not like FREEDOM OF SPEECH and censorsed my so-called free speech to the point where I decided that Z/H was much more mature in terms of actual free speech. CANADA curtails freedom of speech more than America does IMHO. If the metrics tested views on freedom of speech CANADA would score low compared to the USA.

Stupid story. I live on the border with Canada and travel there all the time to medium sized cities. They tell me in Canada the NWO has implemented socialism for many more years and regs are far more in line with Europe than the U.S. Bigger cities in Canada have the immigrants. Most immigrants would starve or freeze to death in Canada's smaller towns becasue they are very tightly knitted.

Hey Guy! Hey Buddy! I can speak with authority on this subject, 1) Canada is better than many US cities/states on guns; Canada has NO long gun registry (all you need to own a rifle in Canada is to take a national standardized course and pass the exam -- with that you get a PAL – possession and acquisition license which allows you to have a gun and buy ammo – no need to register anything unless it is restricted (e.g. hand gun or on a restricted list) – there are laws on having a proper gun lock and not keeping ammo in same room as gun unless in a safe (so I circumvent by keeping a loaded clip in a quick release combo case next to rifle with a lock on rifle one digit off from release). 2) Canada is not so free when it comes to speaking one’s mind due to conflicting laws; Hate speech laws and PC human rights tribunals collides with right to free speech (charter of rights and freedom), but for the most part things are okay on that matter. 3) Canada has an ingrained level of tolerance, but I find the most racist people in Canada are Asians that have no concept of assimilation nor does respect for what makes the world a better place (they will rape the ocean clean if they could). If everyone would go along to get along the world would be a good place, most try, but not being respectful to one another is the downfall of society. Hey Asians that live in Canada STOP calling us white-eye devils, learn English, smile once in a while, say “thank you – Buddy” once in a while, and chill!
