France Deploys Its Only Aircraft Carrier To Fight ISIS

Tyler Durden's picture

In mid-October, just as Russian presence in Syria was ramping up and Putin unviled the creation of Russia's first air base in the region based in the Bassel al Assad air base (from where it could easily reach as far as the Suez Canal), we reported that in a previously disclosed move, the US would do something it has almost never done before: leave the Persian Gulf, and the US Fifth Fleet based in Bahrain, with a "gap" in U.S. aircraft carrier support in a region that has traditionally been rather volatile.

Previously we wrote that while in 5th Fleet, the CVN-71 USS Theodore Roosevelt was the largest symbol in the U.S.-led anti-ISIS collation responsible for "1,812 combat sorties totaling 10,618 combat flight hours, taking on 14.5 million gallons of jet fuel and expending 1,085 precision-guided munitions," as part of Operation Inherent Resolve." It has

We concluded by saying that whatever the reason behind the US naval "gap" may be, one thing is clear: the departure of the Roosevelt comes at a particularly awkward time - just as Russia is setting up its own aicraft base in Syria.

We may have been too early.

As Reuters reported earlier today, just as one US carrier was leaving the middle east, another widely feared and respected geopolitical superpower was set to replace US carrier presence in the Middle East in the ongoing war against "ISIS" - France.

Earlier today, in a statement by the French presidency following a meeting of its defence cabinet, the government said it would send its only aircraft carrier, the Charles de Gaulle warship, to the eastern Mediterranean for operations against Isis in both Syria and Iraq.

According to the Independent, "the deployment of the battle group alongside the Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier has been decided to participate in operations against Daesch and its affiliate groups," the statement said after a defense cabinet meeting, referring to the Arabic acronym for Islamic State.

The carrier is usually accompanied by an attack submarine, several frigates, refueling ships, as well as fighter jets and surveillance aircraft Reuters adds.

"The aircraft carrier will enable us to be more efficient in coordination with our allies," Hollande said at the inauguration of the new defense ministry headquarters in Paris

The Charles de Gaulle is the largest warship in western Europe, and the only nuclear-powered aircraft carrier outside the US fleet. It can support up to 40 fixed wing aircraft and helicopters.

France launched its first air strikes against Isis in Syria in late September, in what was described as an act of self defence. "We will strike each time that our national security is at stake," the French presidency said. France was the first country to join the U.S.-led coalition in Iraq and has also provided limited logistical support to Syrian rebels it considers moderate, including Kurds.

* * *

Finally, those asking where the CVN-71 is currently (deep in the South China Sea next to the hotly contested Spratly islands), or the locations of the rest of the US Navy's key assets around the globe, the following map from Stratfor should provide the answer.

These old English racist jokes have been revivified since 2003 by the hate of american warmongers against France, and this hate still persists even in ZH.

All this ugly disdain and nasty jokes come from the firm refusal of the French to join America in Irak, in 2003.

Since France refused to go to Iraq, American warmongers and neo-cons made French army look like cowards – as a punishment.

But History has proved the French were right, and that the WMD were only a dirty trick to serve as a pretext.

Nevertheless, the hate of American warmongers against France remains still there, well alive, even in ZH.

This stale hate still shows through "innocent good jokes" about the “surrender monkeys” and their white flags

As for the rest, the French can be proud of their Military History:

According to the British historian Niall Ferguson, since 387 BC, France has fought 168 major wars against such badasses as the Roman Empire, the British Army and the Turkish forces. Their track record isn't too shabby, either: They've won 109, lost 49 and drawn 10 times.

This makes France the most successful military power in European history - in terms of number of fought and won …

The French have succeeded to conquer and guard the largest country in Europe.

Most of the jokes actually come from WWII time frame.

Thu, 11/05/2015 - 15:15 | 6754525 Analyse2
Analyse2's picture

WWII time frame re-written.

Contrary to what has often been said, and is also a result of the Nazi propaganda of that time, and the neo-cons hatred in 2003, the German advance (Blitzkrieg) encountered serious resistance from the French troops. In the six week Battle of France, from May 10 to June 22, 1940, the French lost, in military personnel alone, 260,000 wounded and 108,000 killed. A total of 368,000 casualties in six weeks is not something to pass off lightly.

This is 5 times more than the losses of the American army in three months of battles in Normandy in 1944 (21000), and nearly the same amount than the US deaths in 7 months of WW1 (116700)!

It is the air superiority (over 1,000 Stuka bombers knocked out the troops defending Sedan) and the intelligent use of the German panzers that broke the defences and made ineluctable the defeat.

In 1939 and 1940 France was let alone (apart from only 8 British divisions, which succeeded to quickly re-embark at Dunkirk thanks to the sacrifice of the soldiers of the 1st French Army of the North).

France was let alone facing a nazi-fanaticized country with a population of 80 million (vs. 40 million in France), a particularly well prepared war-industry, and an air superiority of 5 vs. 1.

At the same time the “US ally” refused to sell planes on credit to France!

Indochina, let's talk about it:

The French lost Dien Bien Phu because they were screwed by NATO (ie. the US).

In 1954 they had to specialize in jets while others in Europe had to specialize in bombers.

And when it came to fight Communism (the Viet Cong, massively helped by Soviet Union and China's troops) ... guess what... the US refused the NATO to get involved. They had to fight the war without bombers, as in 1954 they had very few of these kind of planes.

Another nice lesson from a long list for French morons who believe America is a reliable ally, and even a friend of France. For those who should have any doubt, the reading of French-bashing in ZH is instructive enough …

And guess what... who had to fight the Vietnam war after the US sabotaged French effort?

Besides that, in 1954, when the French were finally defeated in Dien Bien Phu, they had 50,000 troops in all Vietnam, and their biggest planes were Douglas A26 and C47’s, and Vought Corsairs.

When the US was defeated by the same enemy some twenty years later, they had 550,000 troops, B52’s, napalm, missiles, big helicopters, the works …

ISIS: The jihadist movement stamped “Made in America”

For three years, the US, along with the Gulf states and Turkey, poured billions into “opposition” groups, supposedly to unnamed “moderates,” but in reality to Al Qaeda-linked Sunni groups such as al-Nusra and ISIS to spearhead a sectarian war. The US, Turkey and Jordan have operated a base in Jordan where US instructors trained dozens of ISIS members. In an article last year, the New York Times confirmed that the CIA assisted Arab governments and Turkey by airlifting weaponry to these groups in Jordan and Turkey. The Guardian reported last March that British and French instructors were also involved.

Other ISIS members were trained near Incirlik Air Base near Adana, Turkey, where US forces are based. After completing their training, they went to Syria and later Iraq

At least the French have, historically, considerable involvement in Syria.

But note, the purpose of the aircraft carriers, in addition to burning very expensive ordinance on broke-ass Sunni Syrians (how's that asymetrical warfare going for you?), is simply as a counter to the Russian fleet.

If the US simply wanted to bomb camel-jockeys, it could, with much better diplomacy, use Turkish, Israeli, Iraq, or Saudi bases.  All 4 should be bought-and-paid-for allies, but for some reason, can't make their land airbases and airspace available to the Noble Peace winner.

Its just the Eastern Mediterranean is, in an era of super-sonic anti-ship missles, a very small area.

Im just asking myself a few simple questions.

Why did British Intel come out with a complete storyline about the Russian flight had a bomb planted by ISIS and the investigation or Russian statement has not even been made yet?

Why did Cameron call Putin today to explain this whole tidy story? To which Putin only said we will wait for the data

Why did Britain immediately ban all flights from Britain to Egypt and was shortly followed By France.

And now France is sending an aircraft carrier.

And why not a peep out of the Saudi's who are world renowned aircraft terrorist regardless of what MSM wants you to believe.

Equiring minds want to know. im getting a wiff of a rat and the nationality of the rat might be a surprise. I think someone in the EU or the Sauds are kneedeep in this crap somehow, I always look for the first rat who seems to scramble the fastest for a clue

If my hunch is true this just got serious bigtime as 200 innocent Russians just got terrorized and Russia might not show there hand but you can bet they are pissed and blowback will be a bitch. If that is not a direct attack and an act of war then I don't know. I hope Im wrong.

It all plays into Putin's hands if the Russians planted the bomb.  If they did, they wouldn't come out right away and accuse anyone.  Eventually blaming ISIS gives Putin more cover at home to expand the war against ISIS in Syria.  It also gives him sympathy from (some) other nations.  You never know, maybe Russia and Saudi Arabia conspired on this one.  I don't fucking put it past anyone.

He's an ex KGB politician.  I wouldn't trust him or any other leader with my dog.  Maybe Saudi Arabia looks the other way in Syria and Russia looks the other way in Yemen.  I'm just saying that a Russian plane blown up by ISIS is awfully convenient for Putin.  Not sure why the US or UK would conspire, but I'm willing to go further down the rabbit hole.

Sorry mate. MI6 is panicing for some reason.  You watch to much MSM and buy the big bad KGB agent storyline. Putin was only with the KGB early in regional management for 5 years, then he worked as a University professor but most of his life has been in politics. Pull up a bio and see for yourself.

But your right, an ex KGB knows how to get to the bottom of this little fiasco sure as the sun comes up. He will know who paid who, how much, where the money came from, who was involved all of it. Just a matter of time. Whether he chooses to reveal what is found remains to be seen, But he WILL know.

Why is it "apologetics" to recognize that the team playing defense, legally, to benefit its ally, and its own port, against US/Saudi/Israeli proxy terrorists, is not the same thing legally or morally as supporting those terrorists to produce yet more regime change, chaos, and profits for the Anglo-Zionist War Machine?

Do you really think you're clever suggesting Russia, too, pursues its own interests?  This attempt at false equivalency doesn't work because the equivalency is so absolutely false.

Yes, probably a lot you should know if you bothered doing a little research instead of running your piehole.

Here is a little starter tidbit to help you out:

Want to know what makes a man? What makes him who he is? Life experience.

Putin's mother was in the 900 day Nazi siege of St. Petersburg (then Leningrad. its ok you can google it). His older brother  starved to death. Now you starting to have a lightbulb go off in that cavity of yours yet?

Come back after you know something or just anything and Ill talk.

until then ba ba sheep indeed.

No, it is not 'convenient' actually.  He already had support at home.  He certainly isn't the one releasing these absurd and obviously fake "ISIS" videos, and ISIS is clearly a CIA/Mossad/Saudi/Turkish cluster of terror-mercs.

Were you seriously analyzing the issue, you'd ask 'cui bono' and certainly arrive at the conclusion that Israel, the US, and Saudis are all primary candidates.  Israel bombed Hezbollah, in Syria, the next day, as those peple were engaging ISIS.

We don't start with what is "possible" in evaluating a crime - we ask who benefits, and who had means, motive, and opportunity.   Russia doesn't benefit.

Also - isn't it odd that the US was at war with ISIS for 18 months and not one such attack on American or Israeli interests?

Please - trolls gonna troll, but the horse has left the barn on this one.  This was almost certainly Mossad and/or CIA and/or the Saudis.

My gut feeling is that the UK and US really didn't expect Israel to do this, but Israel went ahead and did it regardless, and now the US and UK are desperate to cover it up to protect their friend. That's the only explanation for the way they've been spinning this. None of the certainty surrounding MH-17 is there now; it's all smoke and mirrors designed to deflect attention from the real culprit. Forget Saudi and ISIS; Israel did this, and if the Russians find out, then World War III will be breaking out the next morning.

Amazing how western powers globe trotting and bombing anyone and anything,,, then comically speak of international law over some rocks called islands in the Pacific. I sure don't recall the Syrian government requesting western help,,, especially from the French. Europe deserves all their going to get from those 'refugees' pouring in. May take awhile but they and their EU colleagues will get their comeuppance.

At some point when/if Syria regains its strength it is going to have to kick the western assholes out of their territorial skies. How to do this I don't know, but it will have to be done if they are to ever be sovereign again.

John Oliver recently had a great piece and interesting perspective on all this song and dance concerning Syria.  They didn't even have a participant at Vienna.  Tough to pick who would attend, but in Kerry's hilarious way, he said all the "stakeholders" were involved indiscussions.  You know, except the stakeholders in and around Syria.
